Volume 20 continues our Shiratorizawa vs Karasuno fight-for-nationals match. In this volume, we’ve reached the climax of the 4th set. Such a stunning series. Absolutely love the world of Haikyu with my boys (which is just all of the characters in this world). I feel like this world is a world where you don’t want either team to lose, even if Karasuno is the main team. I certainly feel that way. Back to this volume, surprise surprise, another 5 stars for this series. P.S. Mangas are such a good way to emerge from reading slumps!
I feel like SO much is happening in this match that it's really hard to retain all that is happening!
Even if that might be the case though, seeing that page with the cliff at the end of Karasuno's side of the court reallyyyy reflects the pressure these guys under to score and win. Their backs are literally up against the wall, but I LOVE how this does not slow them down. That they do exactly what Ukai says they can brag about: Scoring.
These guys are out there fighting and it's so incredible to see Tsukki and Suga really go all out! I absolutely LOVE Suga and seeing him have his own character growth in being always relatable (which he still is), but go out and try new things was EPIC! I love how Tendou simply could not break his spirit. You go Suga!
And man seeing Tsukki really convey his frustration and just "fit in" with his teammates as his brother said has been DEEPLY satisfying! It's funny because when I watched the anime I really liked Tendou more. I still do, but it's like the tables have turned and I am really starting to like Tsukki more. It's like the manga hits differently and seeing Daichi get fired up (when Tsukki was reflecting his frustration of him getting called off the court) and want to show Tsukki just what they can do was AWESOME!
Ooooo seeing Ushijima get fired up in a way he probably has never experienced before was also satisfying! I know what's coming and there is a deep place in me that gets excited knowing Ushijima just can't contain Hinata. Also seeing him just get annoyed with Karasuno in general (especially Tsukki as well) is just awesome. Ha!
And speaking of my sunshine boy, I just love him so so so much! This volume really stirred that because even if him and Tsukki are not necessarily friends, the way they "depended" on one another was really awesome! That might not be the right word choice, but I think it's true and that they know how to "lift" each other up. Plus, that ending was lit! AND seeing how Hinata won the set and telling Kageyama they get to play another set made me really happy! <3
Lastly, I LOVED seeing the Old Guy cheer for Karasuno! That was EPIC and made me laugh!! I also liked seeing Tendou's backstory. He's such a lively guy!
Overall, I'm really glad that things have calmed in my household so I can focus on reading this volume. It made me excited all over again!
In previous matches, Furudate gets me caring for characters from teams I know are gonna lose and never reappear again. Can't say the same for Shiratorizawa. Their backstories are shallow and don't leave much of an impression.
omg HELLO WHICH SMOL RED SHIITAKE MUSHROOM IS THIS no it is actually fetus tendou nursing a sapling of happy sadism in his lil-mushroom soul I’M ALL FOR YOU BABEE (when he smiled down at suga i burst into tears idk wHOSE side i’m on)
not hinata being just as outraged as tendou when suga sets to tanaka instead
honestly ushiwaka looking down on hinata not knowing that he himself is just as much of an air-head delights me to no end is it that far-fetched to think they could’ve easily been HELLA GOOD FRENDS?? send tweet
I cannot believe Kageyama and Tsuki just managed to get a point on an OUT OF SYNC pass wow. Karasuno is amazing. I love how Hinata is panicking and killing to be back in the game! I remember this scene from the anime so much, the setter touches the ball the most, has to think the most and is constantly moving. Playing a 5 set game Kageyama is feeling it. My poor child. Set point, Ushijima's serves are so powerful. I love the coach and Daichi's motivation, we've been here before we can do it again ahh. I love it so much that they heard an old time fan shout out that he has expectations about them and Dacihi and Asahi are pumped again ahh. HINATA'S BACK!!! I'm so so nervous even though I know what happens ahh. Wow. Hinata using the skills he learnt, Kageyama's toss was short but Hinata ran for it and tapped it with the tips of his fingers and scored. THEY WON THE SET!!!! Hinata looking for Kageyama to compliment him so cute and Kageyama telling Hinata his cover was nice eeep. Ahhhh SUGA IS THE SETTER FOR THE 5TH SET MY THIRD YEAR GETS TO PLAY!!! Aww Suga is nervous and Asahi is all like hey if you need someone dependable send it my way ahhh! Tsuki blocked Ushijima again wow. That double page spread of the libero set wow wow NOYA IS TOSSING and the syncro attack everyone is running. We have good hitters but we can't stop at just good eep. SUGA SPIKED THE BALL WOW!!!! Eeep some Ushijima back story, his father was a pro volleyball player and Ushijima wants to be dependable and strong like an ace because of the way his father described it. Tendo still freaks me the hell out and wow 4 points in a row.... Wow Tsuki literally has Ushijima's serve SLAM into his fingers touch but he did it, he deflected the ball giving Karasuno that chance! Tsuki is incredible, I love the panel of his glasses watching the ball, so intense and it works, he is so good at reading blocks. Tsuki lost a point but Ushijima is trying to avoid his blocks now instead of go through. He has snapped his fingers eeep. GET SOME TAPE BABY. I love how passionate Tsuki is now, he is already thinking about his next move and the consequences of him being sent to medical. Wow. Also Hinata's confidence is the best. Tendo plays a lot on hunches and he wants to play volleyball that makes him feel good, he likes to outsmart and beat players not just with ability but with their mind. He read Suga and now Karasuno is losing! THE GUESS MONSTER STRIKES AGAIN. Hinata is back and literally received the ball with his face, wow, but he was smart and turned his head so he didn't get a nose bleed to be sent off court! Ushijima wants to 'crush' Hinata he is officially mad. Holy shizz that last frame of Kageyama wow wow wow. KAGEYAMA IS WARMING UP, HE IS READY TO COME BACK!!! Suga pulled of a syncro attack and got a point. Kageyama is back wow. He is so ready, pumped and just seeing that expression of full concentration on his face is so beautiful. KAGEHINA SCORE AHHH They're back and ready to fight. Love this duo so so much.
Kainis. Haha!
I like Tendo though. I feel bad for little Satori.
Basta, si Ushijima lang ang ayoko. I'm excited when the freak twins will beat him.
Ganda nung game, bad trip. Kahit hindi Aoba Johsai yung kalaban at hindi buong set pinapakita, ang galing pa rin ni Furudate-san to build the story and to draw the scenes. Woohoo, nakaka-amaze talaga ang manga artists.
--- Y'know? If he trained correctly, I think Ushijima-san would probably be able to shoot a kamehameha. - Shirabu
Shett, namiss ko bigla sila Goku. Classic talaga ang Dragon Ball. Best.
Another exciting volume! It was fun to see some backstory for Ushiwaka and Tendo. (I wish there could've been a little more...) And yay for Suga getting out on the court! 😊 I was kind of impatient while reading, though. I'm just ready for Karasuno to win!
Favorite moments:
-Shimizu warming Suga's hands. -Suga being brave enough to try new things. -Ushiwaka, "in the groove". -Hinata's decision to receive the ball with his face.
sttoooooopppp tendo is so funny and for no absolute reason lolol i really enjoyed reading the backgrounds of the players from shiratorizawa <33 gives them so much more personality and i feel more connected to them as characters of their own story, rather than side characters to karasuno’s story
I mention it all the time but the natural ease with which Furudate will up the ante at the eleventh hour is so good. Sudden new plays that have been built up before, MVPs dropping... it's so good!! Plus Ushijima flashback, we stan!
