He’s the youngest chairman in the Premier League. He runs one of the most successful clubs in England. He has homes in Monaco and Lake Como. He’s driven. One of the wealthiest men in the UK. He’s also hot. Like, the hottest man I’ve ever laid eyes on.
In short, Declan Hawkes is the dangerous kind of man who can have anything and everything he wants.
And… he wants me.
Me! A graduate intern, who has lived in the same house in Birmingham, England, for my entire life.
So when Declan decides to pursue me, the woman who sneezed a fake eyelash onto one of his exquisite designer dress shirts, I panic.
We have nothing in common. But for some reason, he invites me to an exclusive party on New Year’s Eve. I’m inclined to say no, but my friends are going and they want me to be there, too.
But if I go… What on earth am I going to do with a billionaire?

USA Today bestselling author Aven Ellis began her publishing career in 2013 with her debut release, Connectivity. She currently writes romantic comedies featuring royals, billionaires, aristocrats, and athletes.
Her books are designed to make readers laugh out loud and fall in love. Happily-ever-after endings and good-boy heroes are guaranteed.
Aven lives in the Dallas area with her family. Aven loves shopping and fashion and can spend hours playing with fragrances in any department store. She can be found chatting it up on social media, eating speciality M&Ms, and crushing on the latest outfit the Duchess of Cambridge is wearing.
I absolutley love all of Aven Ellis’ books and I have been (not so) patiently waiting for The Chairman and The Caterpillar aka Out of Play. I was so excited for this book and it did not disappoint.
Declan is absolutely a swoony hero. Just look at these quotes “For the record, YOU are my priority at the moment” (Chapter 2) and “I make time for what matters to me.” (Chapter 4) and “You were always meant to be mine.” (Chapter 23). This serious, intense hero falls completely for the beautiful Nicole and will stop at nothing to make her his. *sighs*
Of course, Nicole is a great character too. I love that her outward confidence and how she knows what she wants. She is a strong, independent woman just waiting to be loved completely.
I loved the development of their relationship. Yes, there were problems and issues to resolve and grow together through, but that’s what all relationships have and need.
The chemistry between these characters was incredible. I could feel the sparks flying off the page. Yes, there are a couple of open door scenes. They are easy to skip if you don’t want to read them. You still get to enjoy the chemistry without those scenes if you want.
If this is how Aven Ellis is starting the year, I can’t wait for what comes next.
Out of Play follows the love story of Declan and Nicole. You may recognize them from previous books in the series. Declan is the chairman of Stonebridge United and Nicole is working at an internship with ConnectU. After a hilarious meet-cute, both realize their is something missing in their lives. Declan realizes his life doesn’t need to be only work. He even inspires Nicole to make some changes and stand up for what she wants in her role at ConnectU. The couple fall for each other quickly, but it isn’t without some bumps along the way. Check out Put of Play January 23rd! It is another can’t miss book in the series!
Aven Ellis will continually hold a special place in my heart as I discovered her when I had just started to get back into reading. That being said, after having read everything she’s written, her books do start to feel a bit formulaic and predictable. She’s incredibly good at world building and establishing a setting-its insane to me that all of her books are interconnected, and while the beginning of this felt a bit name-droppy in trying to establish connections to other series, I do very much love the Avenverse and this author’s knack for creating (and establishing) such a well thought out and connected world.
I’ll be honest that I wasn’t one of those eagerly awaiting Declan and Nicole’s story, but I am EXTREMELY glad to have read it! This is a story about being true to yourself, living your life the way YOU see fit, and about finding that one person that complements that. Declan Hawkes is the absolute sweetest, strongest, most dedicated, and swoon worthy MC. I would very much enjoy being pursued by the chairman I can tell you that! He has BDE in spades and I cannot believe I wasn’t looking forward to reading his book before now! This was easily Aven Ellis’ SPICIEST book yet, moving her firmly out of the “closed door” category and into “fade to black”. Nicole and Declan’s chemistry was strong and quite visible-I enjoyed going along for the ride as their relationship progressed.
As always, the author planted SO MANY SEEDS for upcoming books, which is honestly how she gets you 😂. You meet these characters in one book and fall in love with them enough to be desperate to go and read their story as soon as it drops…I told you, Aven Ellis is a world building aficionado!!
Overall, this was a lovely romance (albeit a tad predictable for someone’s who’s read Aven’s entire backlist). It was funny and emotional where it needed to be, and was just generally a quick, easy, enjoyable read.
“For the record, YOU are my priority at the moment.” - Declan
“You were always meant to be mine.” - Declan
Out of Play is a sweet heartwarming rom com that will give you all the feels! Nicole and Declan have an adorable meet-cute, with her sneezing a “caterpillar” (aka fake eyelash) onto his shirt. From there he is entranced with her and makes it his mission to pursue and woo her, and wow does he! Declan is beyond swoon worthy! Only two chapters in I was reading in a waiting room and found myself desperately trying to hide a smile and laughter as the two texted for the first time (I didn’t succeed, pretty sure I got some funny looks!). Their banter is everything! Nicole and Declan both enjoy having control and challenging one another on things big and small, leading to great conversations and steamy situations. Declan never leaves Nicole hanging, he may be an “enigma” to most but makes an effort to let her see his heart from early on! And of course there is a lovable grandparent, Nic’s Grandpa, thrown into the mix (IYKYK from reading Aven’s other books)!

✷ Out of Play releases on January 23, 2023! I received an arc in exchange for a free and honest review. ✷
“Out of Play” was set in the world of premier league soccer, which is something of great interest to me. It’s also something that has become a passion for Aven Ellis, the author, who often interacts with her fans about the teams and the players. This added even more to the story as I read it. I could feel her passion come through in Declan, the chairman of Stonebridge United and our male heartthrob. Although he is the youngest chairman of a premier league team at twenty-five, he is confident in his skills that were taught to him by his grandfather his entire life. If he emulates everything his grandfather stood for and makes decisions that his grandfather would also make, he knows he will be successful. Along comes Nicole, a force in her own right and just as confident in other ways. When Declan expresses interest in her, she is very skeptical that it’s real knowing there is an imbalance of power and wealth. From the beginning, she challenges him on almost everything, which only causes him to like her more. No one has ever done that to him and for him, it’s refreshing and a trait that he loves. Down the line, they each have a big challenge with their respective careers. And although it may seem the stakes could be higher for one, we are shown how Declan and Nicole can be a couple who are equals.
Aven writes amazing stories that are fun and lighthearted romances. The characters were well-developed and because of this, we could visualize exactly what they looked like, enjoy their witty banter, and text messages, and feel their great chemistry. “Out of Play” is book 4 in the British Isle Billionaire series and if you want to meet the rest of the characters in the book, I highly suggest you also read books 1-3. You will enjoy all the series written by Aven Ellis!
Readers who have read previous books in the British Isles Billionaires series are familiar with both Declan and Nicole. Declan is the youngest chairman in the Premier League, running Stonebridge United. Nicole is an intern at Connect U. When they meet and Nicole sneezes, causing one of her fake eyelashes to land on his shirt, he’s instantly smitten. Nicole doesn’t understand what he sees in a commoner like herself, but he appreciates the fact that she wants to know who the real Declan instead of what his money could do for her.
I’ve been waiting for Declan’s story for a while, and it was definitely worth the wait. Declan is probably at the top of the list of swoon-worthy heroes. He’s sweet and considerate of Nicole, and understanding of her reluctance to let him spend money on her. Despite all the pressures of his job and his family, he’s a genuinely good man.
I wasn’t particularly crazy about Nicole when she was first introduced in a previous book, but she redeems herself in this one as readers really get to know her. She’s funny and independent. She doesn’t want to rely on anyone, which makes her reluctant to accept Declan’s assistance, especially when it comes money and her issues with her internship.
Despite living in two seemingly different worlds, Declan and Nicole work well together as a couple. Their banter and chemistry are off the charts, and they’ve jumped to the top of my favorite couples written by this author. While this is the fourth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. Readers both new and old to the series are in for a treat with this book.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy provided by the author**
Think about your life. Has there been a moment so embarrassing that just thinking out it makes you cringe and want to disappear-- even years after? Of course there has. Everyone has them.
Nicole is attending a football game with one of her closest friends and her boyfriend when introduced to Declan, the chairman of the club. Declan is young, handsome and oh so successful. Nicole comes from a completely different world and is part of an internship program at Connectivity Media. She likes things just so. Mistakes made live in her head so she's careful not to make them. Until she sneezes and loses a fake eyelash that lands on Declan. While utterly mortified, Nicole is able to muster courage and move forward, seemingly unbothered. It's when she's by herself that Nicole relives the moment and wants to just disappear. Declan recalls the moment differently; he sees Nicole as a completely put together woman who intrigues him immensely. It's this introduction that stays with Declan and is why he wants to get to know Nicole.
"Out of Play" is the latest book written by Aven Ellis and introduces characters that are heavily anticipated to be seen in future books. Known for laugh-out-loud moments, Ellis also writes heartfelt moments that stay with a reader. Her characters are well-rounded and have real emotions with which a reader can empathize or just plain enjoy -- just like Grandpa and his sus feeling for Declan (read the book to see how that unfolds and is fixed). Ellis' books always have a way of staying with the reader long after the last sentence.
Out of Play is an adorable rom com with loveable real characters.
From the meet cute you're invested in Nicole and Declan. Aven has a way of making her female main characters relatable to everyone at least on some level. Nicoles views on money and need to be able to do it herself pulled something in me.
Declan's focus on Nicole and being able to balance work and life is something we all want from a partner. He's handsome but that's secondary to how he treats her with respect from the beginning.
Their relationship is swoonworthy, from the first kiss I knew this would be the spiciest Aven book that I've read....and it was!
The secondary characters in any Aven Ellis book always add a level of depth that cause you to want to hear more about them as time goes on, and for the most part...if you wait a book or two you might get your wish!
Overall - I adored this book. Is it predicatable in some ways? Yes. However, that's what I want when I read these types of romances novels. Aven's books are comfort reads that I know will make me smile, cry and then laugh out loud. Is the world building and connecting the different series on point? Absofrigginlutely. It's amazing how she keeps you in the loop on characters from past stories, and builds excitement for more couples to come.
I reciceved this as an ARC- these opinions are my own.
If you're looking for a book that gives you all the "feels", makes you smile, swoon and fan yourself, this is it for you. If you've read previous books by Aven such as Connecticity 2.0, Making Spirits Bright and Pitch to Palace, you'll already be familiar with both our Nicole and Declan (yes, swoon). Declan was introduced and how!! I think the collective Aven Ellis fan base have pushed her into writing him faster. And he lived up to our rather very very high expectations and some more. He's a wonderfully written character, alpha yet delightfully vulnerable at the right moments. Nicole on the other hand is a superstar. I'll be honest and say that I didn't wait for this book for Nicole at all but I think I liked her more than Declan and that's saying a lot. Where we would expect a demure girl matched with an alpha, Aven surprised us all and gave us a badass heroine, strong yet grounded. The plot is fresh, reads easily and doesn't lose the flow. The supporting characters are a delight. Nicole's grandpa will remain a fan favourite. As is Aven's signature, we are introduced to future characters and I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise for you all here!
So, go on. Pick up a copy and I promise you'll close the last page with a smile knowing that happy ever afters makes everyone happy.
I received an Advance Review Copy but my review is entirely my personal experience with this book.
I’m a huge Aven Ellis fan, I love football (soccer), happily ever afters and seeing woman find their strengths…. This book had it all. And a grandfather. Nicole and Declan met in Making Spirits Bright but while o highly recommend reading every single Ellis book you can, this book absolutely works as a standalone.
Nicole and Declan come from entirely different backgrounds. And Ellis has done an amazing job describing each of their characters, their upbringings, their feelings and experiences with money and their relationships with their family, especially their grandfathers.
As their relationship grows Nicole and Declan both need to unpack the aspects of their upbringings that are holding them back and stretch themselves in their careers and learn to love and trust and support each other. And my word does this book pull you in and make you wish it would never end.
Aven Ellis incredible character development, never ending details from food, locales to neighborhoods so you feel like you are right there with Nicole and Declan are tremendous.
I can’t wait to see the Chairman and Nicole again in future Aven Ellis books. LOVE them!!
Declan Hawkes is the youngest chairman in the Premier League for soccer. He runs one of the most successful clubs in England. He has homes in Monaco and Lake Como. He’s driven. One of the wealthiest and hottest men in the UK. He’s the kind of man that can have anything and everything he wants, and he has set his sights on a woman he met at one of the games.
Nicole attends a game with her best friend but is mortified when she sneezes and one of her fake eyelashes lands on the chest of one of the most important men at the match. This interaction is what starts the intrigue for the gentleman, and he insists on pursuing her.
I liked how Declan was sweet and thoughtful. I like how he made an effort with Nicoles grandpa. I liked Nicole’s independence and need to make her own way.
This is my first Aven Ellis, and I could tell that there are other characters in this book that are going to or at least they should have books of their own. I am going to check into it, but this won’t be my last book by this author since I interested by her writing. I was a bit worried at the beginning but soon enough changed my mind. If you don’t like insta love maybe this wouldn’t be for you but I don’t mind it at all if it is played out correctly and with interest.
Declan Hawkes is used to getting whatever he wants. He's a master with words, a billionaire and the youngest chairman of the Premier League football club, Stonebridge United.
When he crosses paths with Nicole Walker, a financial intern at Connect U Enterprises, he's immediately drawn to her. Here is a woman who is brimming with confidence and owning the fact that she's just sneezed a fake eyelash onto his dress shirt. Moreover, she is not easily won over by fame and fortune. It seems that the chairman has finally met his match.
Both Nicole and Declan have type A personalities and like to be in control. Yet, as their relationship grows and develops, they learn there is much more to one another than meets the eye. "Out of Play" is not only one of the hottest books that Aven Ellis has ever written, it has quickly become my favorite book. The story of Declan and Nic is not only full of humor, steam, and romance, but it leave readers with a big goofy grin on their faces and a happy sigh.
I can't recommend "Out of Play" enough and eagerly look forward to Aven's upcoming Stonebridge United series and Rafe's story.
This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The Chairman is a book I have been waiting for, for what feels far too long! From the moment Declan was introduced in Making Spirits I have been desperate for this book. Declan is smart, hard-working and drop-dead gorgeous. He is a man who knows what he wants and what Declan wants, Declan gets!
Nicole is a confident, independent woman, Nicole is used to being her own woman and not relying on a man for anything. I really like Nicole and could very easily relate to her.
This book has some of the hottest scenes Aven has ever written but it also has some of the sweetest. I absolutely love Nicole's Grandpa and When Declan meets him it is one of the sweetest moments. Full of laughter, swooning and the odd tear its all you need in a rom-com!
As usual, Aven has smashed it out of the park and has got me desperate for more from these characters. I cannot wait to hear about Declan's siblings stories Rafe and Calista.
There is something about the way that Aven Ellis creates her stories that just draws me in. Honestly, it is the research that she does, the way she writes a scene, and the way she builds her characters that appeals to me.
Declan and Nicole had amazing chemistry, I loved how they balanced each other out. I loved how they challenged each other and were not afraid to speak their minds about various topics. Also, Nicole's relationship with her grandpa was heartwarming.
My only "issue" was that Nicole's work situation got pushed to the background. I kept waiting for that part of the story to pick up. Once it finally did I still found myself waiting for more of it. In my mind I thought there would have been more conflict/drama around that.
That minor issue though didn't take away from my love of the story, or my love of the couple. The Chairman and the Caterpillar are one of my favorite couples that Aven has brought to life. I will say I am excited for what comes next, and cannot wait for the stories of Rafe/Bea and Calista/Griffin.
I can't even begin to tell you how excited I have been for this book. Aven's books always deliver, but this one was extra special. Nicole and the Chairman have such amazing chemistry. (Not just physically, though this book delivers on that front!) Their dynamic is so wonderful. It is so great to see a female character not only appreciated but celebrated for standing her ground and being independent. The journeys that Nicole and Declan are both on are so relatable and interesting. Family history shapes us all, and this book does such a beautiful job of showing that. And as always, the main characters family members play a part. Grandpa is a fabulous addition, and I can't wait to read Declan's siblings finding their happily ever after. Thank you for such a wonderful book!
* I received a ARC of this book, and am thrilled to be able to not only read it but write this review. How lucky am I?
The 4th book in the British Isles Billionaire series, Out of Play, is out January 23, 2023!
Out of Play focuses on Declan, The Chairman, and Nicole, his Caterpillar. Declan is the chairman of a popular soccer team and is focused strongly on successfully continuing his grandfather's legacy. Nicole is a finance intern at ConnectU. Nicole and Declan have immediate attraction and heat. The more books Aven writes, the steamier they get! If you're a fan of Aven's books, you know what you're going to get out of this one: firey passion, deep connections, and you know a happy ending is guaranteed! I love following up with couples from previous books in the series (broken beds and all 😉) and seeing what new couples may be coming in the future. This series always makes me long for London too.
Thank you to Aven for the opportunity to read this ARC!
Every time Aven Ellis releases a new book it’s an immediate add to cart (or let’s be honest pre-order) for me! Out of Play was no different and I’ve been impatiently waiting for Declan and Nicole’s story since we were introduced to them in Making Spirits Bright!
Declan is the Chairman of the football team he owns, Stonebridge United and Nicole is a finance intern at William Cumberlands company. The two first meet through mutual friends and I love getting glimpses of previous couples throughout Declan and Nicole’s love story. From before the first page their story pulled me in and I loved every second of it!
If you’ve enjoyed an if Aven’s previous books I know you’ll love this one too! If you’ve never read an Aven Ellis book, you’re in for a treat! Don’t hesitate to one-click Out of Play and make sure to pre-order Aven’s upcoming releases too!
What happens when you sneeze your eye lash onto the shirt of a handsome man at a football (soccer) game? Well, if you’re Nicole you get a meet-cute with Declan Hawkes, Chairman of Stonebridge United.
Aven Ellis does a fantastic job of giving her characters depths, such as exploring their drastically different experiences growing up with money and their relationships with their families. I love Nicole’s Grandfather and how Declan understands how close Nicole is to him.
I enjoy that Aven goes into such details about food, clothes and the locales the characters visit. She makes you feel like you are actually visiting the places with the characters.
While this book is apart of a series, it could also be read as a stand alone. This is a don’t miss book!
*I received an ARC in return for my review of this book.*
I’ve been intrigued by Declan since he popped up in “Pitch to Palace” so I was excited he was finally getting his own book. Declan is the youngest Chairman in the league and has everything going for him. Until Nicole loses her fake eyelash on his shirt then he’s completely done for. Nicole is optimistically hopeful that Declan will at least give her a few minutes of his time but pleasantly surprise when he starts to answer some hard hitting questions. These two made me giggle and swoon and fall in love with them. I love that Nicole challenges Declan and doesn’t let him get away with things. I love that all Declan wants to do for Nicole is make life easier and treat her as she deserves. I’m a big fan of everything Aven writes so I highly recommend all of her books for an easy read and cute romances.
Having waited for The Chairman for what seems like forever, only because of how desperate I was to get my hands on it, this books had my expectations high. I’m always thrilled when Aven meets or exceeds them!
Other than the caterpillar eyelashes, not a talent of mine, I really related to Nicole- how she musters strength when she feels weak, her need to speak truth when its uncomfortable, and her love of hole in the wall restaurants. I loved seeing her wisdom in realizing where she is wrong, but also not taking less than she deserves or is important to her in a relationship.
The chemistry between these two next level and Aven really allowed it to flourish naturally and not feel forced!
The supporting characters left me dreaming of their books and already wanting more from this family!
After an awkward Meet-Cute including a falling false eyelash, Nicole feels like she has ruined her chances with Declan, the youngest Chairman the Premier League has ever seen, not to mention the most attractive! After all, she’s just a graduate intern at an internship where she feels undervalued and is struggling to make her mark; even if she has the smarts and confidence to do so! On the surface, they have very little in common, but he’s a man on a mission…to woo Nicole! Look out girl! He’s pulling out the big guns…but, with humility and all.the.swoon!
I love Declan and Nicole! They have great chemistry (each Aven book gets a bit more 🌶️ 🔥 ) and silly, fun humor between the two of them! Aven always writes a heroine and hero who help each other truly see and bring out the best in each other, and Nicole and Declan are no different! Both seek control and hide their insecurities from everyone else, but as the story progresses and they get closer, they become vulnerable with each other! Yes, there is an instant connection but, theirs is a relationship you root for, so it’s okay with me! So many laugh out loud moments were through bantery text messages which I love; and, Nicole’s grandpa…I adore him! If you’re wanting a billionaire who wears his heart on his sleeve (something not always seen in billionaire romance books) and a strong, relatable heroine who makes him work for it, this book is for you!
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: Fade to Black/Mild Details
*I received an ARC via the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Ms. Ellis never fails to disappoint! I have all of her books set to auto purchase. This book was a perfect foil to the really heavy/thriller books I had been reading prior!
This book is the fourth in the British Isles Billionaires series. I believe the first book in this series was her first book published.
All throughout the book, I found myself wondering if the next one would be about Rafe and Bea! I was so excited to see that their story will be book five!
I did feel this book had quite a bit more steam than her others, but I wasn’t bothered by it. I really enjoyed Nicole’s character. I thought she was strong and determined. Declan is a great match for her. Their love story was fun to watch unfold.
What Declan aka Mr Chairman does for Nicole during the Christmas period was jaw-dropping and plain awesome. Their dates were simple and I loved how she was his focus throughout.
There is a Cinderella feel throughout the book with Declan sweeping Nicole off her feet as he pampers her whenever he can and makes her wishes come true one by one. I can’t think of a better way for him to spend his money on. 😆
I truly loved those deep conversations they had. It showed how they connected deeply beyond the physical attraction which kickstarted their relationship. But the third act was difficult to read as their relationship is rocked by external events even as they navigate through a new relationship.
I have been waiting patiently a long time for Declan's story. I just loved Declan and Nicole together. Their characters were well developed with a strong sense of who they were to each other. We had glimpses of other characters from previous books. And Grandpa is seriously the best Grandpa EVER! Aven hit it out of the park with this one. I thought Connectivity was my favorite book in the British Isles Billionaires series, but I think it may be replaced with Out of Play.
Welcome back to the British Isle Billionaires! We have finally reached Nicole and Declan's story, which I have very impatiently been waiting for since the infamous caterpillar eyelashes scene in Making Spirits Bright.
The wait was so worth it. Nicole is a charming main character who exudes confidence even when she feels anything but confident. She's dealing with a dud of an internship experience and watching as her friends all find love and happiness, all while the only man to pique her interest is the youngest Chairman in the Premeir League.
Aven does an amazing job bringing these two characters together and making their "insta-love" not just feel plausible, but truly genuine.
My only complaint is that I want more Declan and Nicole now that I've finished Out of Play. 🤞
What an amazing read! The Chairman and Caterpillar’s love story is one the most intense couplings that Aven Ellis has written. Each is needing to succeed professionally…but for very different reasons. Once Declan sets his sights on Nicole…game on. As with all her books, she is able to bring the story to life with her amazing attention to details, cast of characters, and returning faves. And, let’s just say the heat in this story…Whew! Out of Play is ranking high on my personal favorite list of Aven’s books. A not to miss!!
I received an ARC of this book as part of the author’s Patreon community.
I enjoy all of Aven Ellis’ work, but particularly her several series based in the UK. This book follows the love story of Nicole, a finance intern with Connectivity, and Declan Hawkes, the billionaire chairman of the champion Stonebridge United football club. I enjoyed the book, and liked to read about these characters that readers met in previous stories.
Aven has outdone herself. The instant connection between Declan and Nicole draws you in and you are swept up in their love story. They make you believe in love at first sight, and you are rooting for them to make a go of it! Additionally, new characters have been introduced and I can't wait to see where their stories go. For fans of Aven's work, snatch this one up! It's great and you will not be disappointed!
I feel like I’ve waited eternity for the Chairman. This instalove was just what I needed this week! The basics of love were there- the choosing to spend time, the small efforts- making me forget that Declan was a billionaire.
The arc about Nicole’s time at Connectivity was great-I just wish a little more was spent on that.
This is also the HOTTEST Aven Ellis novel I’ve ever read, while still maintaining a closed door aspect.
I’ve waited for this story between Declan and Nicole and it was definitely worth the wait! Their romance has everything and I loved the way Declan was with Nicole’s family, especially her grandfather. While we learn so much about their relationship, we also learn how Nicole handles the adversity she is facing at her internship and that helps make this story complete. I can’t wait for Aven’s next story!
