I'm so over this trope

Man, if I come across one more book where tragic people overcome their traumas together and also there are dogs, I'm gonna fling my Kindle into the sea.

Bad book due to lack of research. How could the author not do research? Any seasoned police officer would NEVER keep their weapon out of reach in a bag! They are trained to notice their surroundings under all circumstances. They’re not superhuman but like soldiers not noticing your surroundings could mean life or death so you pay attention. Walking into a dark park, with no one else around in NEW YORK! Even a civilian won’t do that.

Also the inner dialogue while having a conversation is so annoying. Have a thought not an entire daydream. She gets threats but don’t take them seriously? Your husband was murdered. Your partner was on the take from the mob. A woman was brutally killed and you don’t think you at least need a security camera in the isolated cabin you live in, really? Reminds me of those Lifetime movies when the heroines get tired of being protected and need to go shopping to feel human and the stalker kidnaps them. Dumbass!

Going to meet the serial killer alone, no back-up, not even your former Navy Seal boyfriend. Yeah ok that makes sense, NOT! How can the deputies be that green. Granted small towns don’t usually have big crimes to keep their skills sharp but they do have to perform investigations and take assessment every year so they can’t be that clueless.

This book was just juvenile. The stories premise was good, but the follow-through was just missing. If the author didn’t want to do actual research them he’ll watch Criminal Minds, FBI, Law and Order, the list goes on and on of shows that will show you how FBI Agents and even Navy Seals might behave.

Plus the disconnects in the story, like how did the FMC’s best friend know about the MC’s teammates deaths and his fiancée death when he clearly said during group that he hadn’t told anyone about either of these things. That group is supposed to be like AA. What’s said in AA stays in AA.

This book was 2-stars at best and I have no desire to read the rest of the series. I listened to the Audible and the narrator was ok but doesn’t know how to do a male voice so it should’ve a male and female voicing the story or a female narrator who does a really good male voice.

The writer does have ability, and parts of the story were enjoyable. However, the editing was terrible, and I found myself reading and correcting errors in my head which drove me crazy. There was a lack of transition, so I often didn't know what was going on. The story begins with the murder of Spenser's husband and her own near death with no mention of her career or any problems she might be having at work. The story jumps to a year after the murder and mentions "the situation with her former partner." What situation? I had to look back to make sure I hadn't missed something. This happened several times through the book. I liked Spenser's Great Dane, Annabelle, but she referred to her repeatedly as her big dog. I knew she was a big dog and didn't need to be reminded repeatedly. Picky? Perhaps, but it was one of the things that drove me nuts. Prepositions were used when conjunctions were appropriate, and there were lots of sentence fragments. I probably will not read another book in this series and wouldn't recommend it. My advice to the author is to continue writing but to hire a new editor.

No ending

This book ended in the middle! No answer to who killed the main characters husband and, attempted to kill her. A disappointing waste of time

Very good

This is a new author for me and even though someone recommended this as a cozy mystery (it definitely isn’t) it was still a really good read.

I really enjoyed this book. There were some mistakes that I was surprised wasn’t recognized during the editing process. I agree with some of the reviews that it made the deputies look kind of dumb because they didn’t know things that most average people would know. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the romance aspect of this book even though I usually hate romance in books. It was the perfect amount and didn’t overdo it! I plan to read Book 2 of the series!

I really enjoyed this unique and twisted story. The main character is strong but severely damaged. Her mind needs to heal and what better way than to start over in Sweetwater Falls. But everything is not all it seems to be in this quaint and quiet little town. Someone is watching and waiting.....will she be another victim.

This book is filled with darkness and the the darkness is oozing out of every pore in this little town. I find that as we move on in the series the dark secrets that are leaking out will cause a catalyst of events that I am afraid Spenser won't survive.

I really hope that the relationship with Spenser and Ryker moves along. I think that they need each other, but time will tell.

3 stars feels generous…This was an easy read, quick read. I liked it fine but found it predictable. The one big question I did have wasn’t even answered in the end. I read this book for my book club and while I wouldn’t mind reading others in the series at some point, I which the book didn’t end with any unanswered questions.

Another freebie that I really enjoyed.. it had me on the edge of my seat and I liked the main characters. Majority was crime investigation/thriller with a tiny bit of romance- no spice. Will be thinking about this one for a while and will be reading the 2nd one🙂

I really liked this book. Read it in 2 days but it was disturbing because of how horrible the “bad” guy was. It is so sick what some people do to other people. But there was a really strong female main character which I like as well as a bit of romance (but no sex scenes thank goodness).

Great characters with small town charm

Likable characters with room to continue to develop into a close knit group. Baggage on both sides keep the relationship a tough road

The book, overall, was an okay read. What I wasn’t crazy about was how fast everything happened, like going from being absolutely devastated over the death of her husband to, seemingly instantaneously being attracted to the other guy… it wasn’t “fast paced”, it was rushed. There were a couple of places where it was repetitive. There was so much more to this story that could have been fleshed out and would have really helped to make it better. I felt like I got whiplash, reading it.
That being said, she’s a talented writer, I think, who should slow things down and take her time.
Also, there were far too many “run on” sentences.

Happy to try new authors

I love a KU murder mystery, Spenser and Ryker both have interesting backstories and despite the obvious trauma the book was decently light and fast paced. However the pacing wasn't perfect and there's definitely moments where the author falls into the 'tell not show' trap. They clearly have a good mind for mystery -thriller and the core of the story was a lot of fun.

disappointing

Not much of a thriller and poor editing. If you have nothing else to read, give it a shot until a real author puts out a book.

New Girl in the Falls is a fascinating start to Elle Gray's Sweetwater Falls Mystery series that masterfully blends factors of suspense, intrigue, and a touch of romance. Set in the old fashioned and reputedly peaceful town of Sweetwater Falls, the novel follows the journey of its protagonist, a newcomer with a beyond who's looking for a clean begin.

Gray’s descriptive writing paints a shiny photograph of the city, immersing readers in its appeal and mysteries. The creator's interest to element in describing the quaint cafes, the eerie woods surrounding the town, and the warm but secretive nature of its citizens creates a wealthy backdrop for the unfolding tale. This atmospheric putting adds intensity and complements the general analyzing experience, permitting readers to sense the protagonist's experience of both belonging and alienation.

The protagonist, whose call is not discovered first of all, is a nicely-crafted individual. She is relatable, driven, and well-knownshows a strong preference to discover the reality about her new environment. As she navigates her new life, she discovers that Sweetwater Falls harbors secrets that are lots darker than they first appear. The narrative skillfully intertwines her non-public struggles with the broader thriller, making her journey of self-discovery compelling.

The plot is properly-paced, with twists and turns that keep readers on their ft. Gray effectively builds anxiety throughout the tale, revealing pointers and clues that result in a stunning conclusion. While some readers would possibly want for deeper individual improvement, the general thriller is captivating enough to keep engagement. The relationships she develops with the town’s residents, from friendly allies to suspicious locals, add complexity to the narrative and preserve readers guessing approximately who may be trusted.

Additionally, the romantic subplot is a pleasant touch, offering a balance to the anxiety of the mystery with out overshadowing it. The chemistry between the protagonist and her love hobby is palpable, imparting moments of levity and warmth amidst the suspense.

Overall, New Girl inside the Falls serves as a promising introduction to the Sweetwater Falls Mystery series. Gray’s writing is both engaging and reachable, making it a perfect read for fans of comfy mysteries. While the e-book leaves a few man or woman arcs open for further exploration, it effectively establishes a strong foundation for future installments.

In conclusion, this e book offers a satisfying blend of thriller and small-town charm that will enchantment to many readers. I would rate it 4 stars out of 5, as it captivates with its engaging plot and putting however leaves a few potential for man or woman boom inside the sequels. I stay up for seeing how Gray develops the story and characters in the approaching books.

Oh boy 🤦🏽‍♀️
I don't like not finishing a book but when I do it's for several reasons. I'll list them in a second. But first. This book is about FBI agent what's her name who moves to a small town in... Washington state to be a new sheriff. After losing her husband back in NY and walking away from the bureau, a new start is what she seeks.

The description of the book sounded good. I'm a stickler for murder mysteries and thrillers like crime and legal. My favorite authors are Burton, Stone, Leigh, James, Declan, etc...I have so many authors I adore I lost track. Anyway, the description sounded good BUTTTT, (there's ways a but ) this one, was way off track.

1) the book is part juvenile and part advanced ( advanced like fancy words I had to look up, I love fancy words lol) but you can't do both. You can not put in fancy wording and then dumb down five paragraphs later. You can't do both. It makes it...weird

2) the book makes the deputies sound stupid. I know, I know! Maybe I'm a bit picky but no cop is going to sound THAT stupid. Like seriously y'all! These deputies from what it sounds like, have been a cop for awhile. Their not newbies. But like, NONE of the deputies know how a criminal investigation works? Not one knows what to look for? Totally unrealistic and really annoying.

3) I stopped at fifty percent but even so, RYKER getting all pissy because he wanted details on a murder investigation. He's not a cop or a journalist. Him being that upset is so uncalled for and stupid. Unless your a LEO it's common sense to not be in the loop... duh!

4) This had some parallels to The Shadow Island series by Mary Stone (I'm a huge fan I would know). For example: both female leads are ex FBI. Both female leads, are the sheriff. Both female leads, have a small department. Both books take place in a small town. Seriously...A LOT of similarities but Mary Stone does it better. Maybe I'm a bit prejudice but still...this book doesn't compare to a great murder mystery. Nope. Nada grada. Sorry Hun. I'm calling it as I see it. Mary Stone is top bitch when it comes a great small town mystery. If you wanna be like Mary, ya gotta step it up ten notches. This book is juvenile compared to. Sorry 🤷🏽‍♀️

I didn't finish this book for several reasons but the main one being, the writing style and wording. I couldn't do it. I tried though. I read halfway. But this was not my tea. Maybe someone else's though.

Just my opinion✌️
See ya 👋

I had to abandon this book. The writing is truly awful and the characters are silly and cartoonish - a giggling FBI agent and a coffee shop owner who his native-American heritage and his dad. In fact, the writing is so obviously bad that I am beginning to lose faith in the general public and the people who leave 5-star reviews for this sort of thing. Are there no standards anymore? Are there no editors anymore?

You have probably heard the dictum, "Show, don't tell" as a reminder to authors that embedding information into the character experience is much more entertaining and immersive for the reader than just telling them what to think. Well, this author has never heard of this concept - or, worse yet, she just outright rejects it. Typically, there will be a line or two of dialog then a lore dump for the next paragraph or two. And the author goes into irrelevant details on the lives of secondary characters - like the model and make of the pickup truck driven by the above-mentioned dad. And how he gets the local car dealers to outbid each other so that he gets a good deal every time he buys a truck, driving the price down. "It was remarkable" the author tells us. Really? Another piece of advice to would-be internet authors, if the details do not meaningfully contribute to the character development, the setting, or the plot, they do not belong in the story.

Two stars instead of one because, there are no egregious grammatical errors (except for one place where the narration suddenly switches from 3rd person to 1st for one paragraph) and the author does not seem to be pushing a political agenda or lecturing the readers about social issues.

Hit man and serial killer! It's his job and his hobby.

Elle Gray is a writer of excellent mystery and suspense. She is a lover of the crime story, and it shows in her well written crime stories of Sweetwater Falls. "New Girl in the Falls" is Book #1, and you won't want to stop here. Dive into Sweetwater Falls. You will get plenty of twisted crime.

Spenser Song and Ryker Makawi are two souls that have had more than their share of pain. Spenser watched her husband of just 5 years gunned down in New York City. She was shot as well, but it was not fatal. She was an FBI agent, and her husband was a brilliant doctor. At the same time, Ryker, a Navy Seal, was the only survivor of his team in Afghanistan during a mission. While recovering from his injuries, he learns his fiancé was brutally murdered.

Both of our main characters struggle to put their lives back together again. Spenser chooses a life change and moves to Sweetwater Falls near her longtime best friend and becomes the small town's sheriff. Ryker becomes a recluse on his late grandpa's property.

Their paths cross when she moves into a cabin on Ryker's property. They tried to avoid each other. However, their lives became entangled when there was a brutal murder. Ryker believes he was the serial killer who murdered his fiancé, and Spencer believes he was the hit man in her husband's shooting.

Dive into this twisted serial killer/hit man's mind as he tells you about the thrill he gets from the act of taking a life. A twisted tale you'll enjoy to the fullest.

Elle Gray’s New Girl in the Falls is a gripping, small-town mystery that pulls you in from the very first page. FBI Agent Spenser Song, seeking solace after a series of personal tragedies, trades the chaos of the Bureau for the quiet charm of Sweetwater Falls. But peace is short-lived when a local woman’s murder unravels a web of secrets far darker than the town’s picturesque facade suggests. Teaming up with her gruff yet intriguing landlord, Ryker Makawi, a former Navy SEAL with his own demons—Spenser finds herself navigating a case that’s anything but simple. And just when she thinks she’s close to solving it, another layer of mystery emerges, pulling her deeper into danger.

I loved watching this intense mystery unfold. Gray masterfully balances suspense with character development, creating a story that’s as much about Spenser’s personal journey as it is about the case. The chemistry between Spenser and Ryker is electric, even if it’s a slow burn. They’re both fiercely independent, haunted by their pasts, and yet they bring out a balance in each other that feels authentic and compelling.

While the plot has its predictable moments, Gray’s layered writing style keeps you hooked. Her prose is smooth and immersive, making it easy to lose yourself in the story, so much so that I finished it in one sitting. New Girl in the Falls is a solid start to what promises to be an engaging series, and I’m excited to see where Spenser and Ryker’s journey takes them next. If you’re looking for a mystery with heart, heat, and plenty of twists, this one’s for you.

New Girl in the Falls by Denise Grover Swank is a great start to the Sweetwater Falls Mystery series. The story introduces Carly, who is looking to start a new life in a new town, but is quickly drawn into local mysteries and secrets.

The author has captured the quaint small-town vibe of Sweetwater Falls well. Carly is a relatable protagonist who will have you cheering for her as she handles the town's complex situations. Side characters also add to the story, whether they are quirky townspeople or potential suspects.

Swank's storytelling strikes a perfect balance between light moments and suspense. The plot's twists and turns keep you in guessing mode, and the tension builds with the cozy atmosphere. The mystery may seem a little familiar, but the setting and characters make New Girl in the Falls an engaging read.

Overall, this is a great start to a promising series that will leave you waiting for the next Sweetwater Falls mystery.

Not a bad book overall. Two things bugged me. After the fight scene, Spencer had to explain what happened during the encounter to the FBI. The author stressed that the questions were detailed and time consuming. Spencer wanted to keep her "friend" Ryker out of the story to save him from questioning. How could did she explain everything that happened without mentioning his part? How could she have possibly explained how a AR15 assault weapon was involved in the shooting without having to tell where it came from? There's no way they wouldn't have asked her to be specific about a detail like that. I didn't care for the ending, which was no ending at all. The author obviously wanted us to be so curious that we would immediately order the next book. Sorry... but if you can't finish the story in one book, I'm not going to get the next.

I really enjoyed this first book of apparently another long series I will be reading before the end of this year! I loved the different characters (and there are quite a few) in this small town and they all seem to have an interesting story to share of their own. So I can’t wait to see where this series takes me when it’s still a series based on the main character and not separate books with different characters.

The New Girl in the Falls made me laugh, cry, gave me fear and trepidation I love in books and kept me guessing the whole way but also left me wondering what happens next rather than just an ending that everyone sees coming.

This review doesn’t have spoilers per se but it does give hints of the vibe of the actual book itself.

Definitely would read again! A little mystery, a little love story, a little gore - perfect for a girl who likes a good mix of everything in a book and that to me gets a 5 star!

this was an easy read

I really enjoy this storyline. It was straightforward. There were not a lot of twists and turns. It made it an enjoyable and easy read.

What I’d like the most about it where the characters. We were given good backgrounds on both main characters. They have a lot in common in different ways. Both had losses in their life that helped to shape them and join them together.

The mystery of the story is finding out who is killing with such brutal and personal injuries. Since our heroin is new to a small town. Leaving the FBI. As the sheriff clear across the country. This being a new position for her she has a lot to learn about small towns, but she also has a lot to give as a veteran FBI agent.

I really enjoyed reading this. It was uncomplicated yet interesting. I hope you enjoy it.

I read books 1 and 2 of this series before reviewing. Objectively, they are no more than 3 stars. There are grammatical errors and problems with the story. However, I actually liked both books and plan to continue the series.

I like the characters and the fact that these are light mysteries (not cozy, but light). It also makes sense that any romance between Sherrif Song and Ryker is developing very slowly over multiple books. Normally I get bored with a slow build, but both of these characters have some healing to do before any relationship would be believable or healthy.

I hope that as the series progresses, the writing improves. I really do want to give a higher rating that matches my enjoyment of reading. For now, I have to say 3 stars but read them anyway if you like light books with good-hearted characters. Just be prepared to overlook some things.

FBI Agent Spenser Song is walking home with husband Trevor when they are ambushed. He is killed, she is shot multiple times.

Turns out her partner was crooked and she believes him to be responsible. When the FBI makes a deal with him to avoid publicity, she moves from the east coast to Sweetwater Falls and becomes the Sheriff. The trouble however follows her along with a vicious killer of women.

She has a very green dept with no investigative skills, lives on a farm owned by a former anti-social Navy Seal and the killer has her in his sights.

The book leaves you hanging as to the real killer of her husband to tempt you to read the next installment. It's light and not sure if it's worth reading another.

Major Faux Pas Regurgitated

It never fails. Almost every rom-com I've read that mentioned anything to do with the military, be it a veteran or still on active duty, has had a big Oopsie in the story. Rom-coms written by women.

In this book, since when does a former Navy SEAL bring a semi-auto weapon, such as an AR15 for use in CQC - I'm not sure what the latest acronym is for combat in close quarters nowadays. Ryker enters the room with his AR, where Spencer is being held. In situations such as this, you bring a friggin' handgun. Ryker's a former SEAL, for cripes sake!

I hate oversights such as this. I guess the former military in me prefers total accuracy, so this really chafes my hide. Other than that, I did enjoy the book, and highly recommend it. 👌

Trigger warnings: torture, mention of but off-page acts of rape, murder, loss of loved ones, ptsd.

This is a murder mystery but not a cozy. It’s not a full thriller but pretty close.

I love the characters and want to see them do more. They are well thought out, strong and real people with great ambition and details.
The setting sounds gorgeous - half country, upcoming town to city with lots of city folk and locals.
The story was complex but written well - I just couldn’t stand the triggers of rape. They were unnecessary extra for me and just crossed my sensitivity threshold so I couldn’t enjoy the book as much.

I may try to read sequels but have to be in a super positive frame of mind - hopeful there are less triggers.

This murder mystery had me hooked from start to finish. It moved along at a great pace and I loved that it's lead character, former FBI agent Spenser Song, was a strong woman who stood up for herself and others and took charge of situations as needed. It is a story filled with lots of suspense, trauma, and drama with many twists and turns throughout.

Not all questions were answered by the end of the novel. There was no answer to who killed Spenser's husband and attempted to kill her as well. Hopefully book two will answer that question for me; a good reason and read the next book in this series. Also, I am intrigued by the continuing relationship between Spenser and Ryker. So anxious to get started on book two. Highly recommend this book.

TW: Sexual assault, murder, PTSD

I had high hopes for this one - had seen a lot of great things! But it didn’t hit the mark for me. The storyline felt rushed & went from our heroine’s past, to a year later (aka present day) and then closed out 3 weeks in the future in 236 pages.

A lot of the descriptions were repetitive (I think she used the word ghoulish 5 times) & felt like it was missing continuity. Important scenes were glossed over and there was even an error where she referenced her husband as her partner while talking about the partner. It was also predictable.

But, if you’re looking for a cute mystery for a rainy day, this would be sufficient! May give the remaining series a read for fun.
