Love Among Reptiles

Rate this book
The Moreno Cartel murdered Miguel’s family. Years later, he’s ready to take his revenge. But when the feelings he’s developing for the cartel boss’s son get in the way, love becomes the deadliest game.

Miguel.
Undercover. Tormented by his past. Dead inside.
Nero. Son of a cartel boss. Depraved. Lives to spite the world.

Miguel loathes everything about working for the Moreno cartel. But the blood on his hands is a price he’s willing to pay if he gets to put down the man who murdered his sisters. Miguel’s goal seems within reach when he becomes the bodyguard of his target’s only son, but having to play a double game with the infuriating Nero Moreno becomes impossible when the cartel prince starts hitting on him.

There has never been a more infuriating demon of a man than Nero. From his filed teeth and green hair to the gaudy gold necklaces and a diamond-studded AK-47, he is narco excess personified and everything Miguel despises.

Or is he? As Miguel gets to spend more time in Nero’s company, he sees glimpses of a man he could have become close with in another life. In this one though, there is no room for love in his black heart.

Nero Moreno isn’t planning on giving him a choice. With the endless buffet of flesh available to him, he shouldn’t care about rejection, but every time his insanely hot bodyguard gives him the cold shoulder, Nero is more set on seduction.

He can see a spark of interest behind the dead black eyes. What does Miguel hide under his tattooed skin and expressionless face? Why won’t he let Nero touch him? Is his heart really made of stone?

Nero will not rest until he finds out.

When their goals collide, blood and bullets pave the path to redemption.

4.75 “You are mine now. I forbid you from ever dying, do you understand me?” stars

“My heart died long ago, but when I was inside you, I felt alive. As if for those few moments, your heart beat for us both.”

I bumped my rating of this book to a 5 stars because there hasn’t been an hour since I read this book where I wasn’t thinking about it in some ways and where I wasn’t thinking of re-reading it since I miss the book already, so for the lasting power that this book has had on me, it’s a 5 stars read in my eyes.

Fair warnings here, while this book is a standalone, it’s also a spin off of Guns n’ Boys and is about two of the characters who were introduced in that series. But since this book is a standalone, I read it as a standalone. As much as I wish that I could read the Guns n’ Boys series because I’m sure I would adore it, it includes the one thing that really triggers me when it comes to books, so sadly me reading that series will never happen, as much as I wish it could. But this book made the perfect standalone, which I’m very grateful for.

Anyway, this is a dark romance book that happens in a cartel, which was everything I needed to know to pick up this book. I’m obsessed with most books that K.A. Merikan has ever written, and I adore how they write dark romances and I have been on a very massive kick of mafia romance lately and I have been reading each and every one of them I can find. I was so excited to read this book since the minute it was announced, and this book turned out to be everything I could have ever asked for. This was just the perfect reading experience for me, and it hit all my buttons when it comes to books.

Brief Summary
Miguel really hates this one cartel because they destroyed his family, and he becomes the bodyguard to the son of the cartel boss (Nero) to try to get his revenge on them. But Nero and Miguel fall in love in the process.

I loved how immersive this book was. I started reading it and I was just so invested in the story. I felt like I was truly in the book and living out the story with the characters due to how vivid all of the descriptions in the book was. I just really lost myself in this story. I don’t have a very good attention spawn and it’s super hard for me to read books in one setting because I just stop focusing on them after a while, but I read this almost 400 pages book in one sitting due to how invested in the story I was, which is truly a feat for me. I was just so invested in this book and I couldn’t put it down because I felt like I would miss some of the events in the book and I couldn’t let that happen. This book was truly a fantastic reading experience, I was lost into the story from the start, and I just felt super invested in the world and the character’s lives.

It’s not secrets that I prefer my books when they are super dark and gritty and this one just had the perfect vibes for me. Nero’s cartel family is kind of intense and they were into eating people and feeding people to caimans (think giant alligators) when people didn’t act like they wanted them to. Which brought a super dark and creepy edge to the book, which I was very into of course. Even Nero has super sharp teeth that were used for this purpose, which was just the kind of creepy details I adored. This book was full of so many little creepy details and I loved them all. They just set the tone of the book perfectly. Nero and Miguel were in super dangerous for their life situations over and over again and I loved reading about all of them. Also, I feel like this book totally nailed the cartel vibes, everything about the cartel life in this book felt so vivid and like it could actually happen to someone somewhere and I adored that. I just felt like it gave the book the perfect colour and vibe that the book needed to thrive.
I loved the characters in this book so much. I absolutely adored Nero. He was such a sarcastic man who was into murder and the dark things, but who also was kind of a sweetheart under it all. And I also adored Miguel. He was super broken and dead inside. He only had one goal in life and it was to avenge his family that was wrong by Nero’s family many years ago. He didn’t have any other feelings or thoughts before he met Nero. If you know me, you know that I always adore the super dark and broken characters, so I fell in love with Miguel the second I met him. He was super lost and broken and didn’t know how to feel anything, as he felt super dead inside. I just felt for him so much and I really adored reading about his character. Miguel was very traumatized and I loved how this book dealt with trauma. It was done in a lovely way, and I thought that it was very enjoyable to read about because of how it was done. On paper, they were super different from each other, but they just fit together so well.

Which leads us to the main thing, the romance in this book. Which was also my favourite part of this book. I adored the romance in this book more than most things I have read in a while. The romance in this book just really worked for me. I was so obsessed with Miguel and Nero and their love. This book was a slow burn enemies to lovers and I loved how this part of the book was done. The slow burn was just the perfect length where the characters spent a lot of time together and it felt so rewarding when they finally got together, because of how long they had been flirting with each other and pining before that happened. Also, the enemies to lovers’ part of the book was just so lovely. I loved how they actually hated each other at the start of the book and how their feelings for each other just started melting down and turning into like and then love because of all the time they spent together and the fact that they got to know each other. I loved their banter in the part of the book and how they tried so hard to not be into each other because they were meant to hate each other, but they couldn’t help but be super into each other anyway. I just loved all of their sexual tension in this part of the book and I thought that it was super lovely to read about.

And when they finally got together, the romance in this book was just so lovely to me. This was a super dark and gritty book, but the romance had so many cute and fluffy moments in the middle of much darker scenes and I loved them all. I thought that the balance between fluffy and gritty moments in scenes was super fun and I loved all of the cute moments came from the romance. The romance in this book was super obsessive and possessive, and I thought it was absolutely perfect and I adored reading about it so much. Miguel didn’t have much feelings and thought he was dead inside and I loved seeing how he fell for Nero and how he discovered hidden feelings in himself that he didn’t think exited. I loved seeing him open up and start to trust Nero bit by bit. I thought that his character progression was just so lovely and I adored reading about it so much. Nero was kind of a man whore and he never planned on falling in love and settling down, while Miguel was a virgin who never planned on being with anyone. I thought that the contrast between them just made them fit together so perfectly in this sense, they just complimented each other so well. I loved how Nero went from never wanting to settle down to being heads over heels with Miguel and ready to do everything for him. It was just the perfect character progression to me and I adored reading about it.

The romance in this book was just so wonderful. Nero and Miguel complimented each other so well and I loved how they were ready to do everything for each other. I loved how they were always there for each other and how they always supported each other no matter what. They were both so understanding and listened to each other so well and it was just so lovely to read about.

Also, this book promised me shocking twists and it delivered that perfectly. There were so many shocking twists in this book and I thought that it made for a super wonderful reading experience. This book took all of the turns and many of them I didn’t expect at all, but I enjoyed each and every one of them and I loved how this book kept me on my toes and always proved me wrong when I tried to guess what would happen next.

I just adored reading this book so much. This book has been stuck in my head since I read it over a week ago now. I just can’t stop thinking about this book, I keep remembering some scenes of this book and then remembering how much I enjoyed them and how much this book just truly worked for me. This book was just a fantastic reading experience for me and I want more books just like this, so much more.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion.

these two were so chaotic. also surprisingly quite sweet for being cartel members and murderers. i really liked them together. the whole plot left a lot to be desired though. a fun read overall, typical binge worthy writing that is expected from these authors. 🐊

They were like the caimans entwined on Nero’s body in a primal dance of love and violence.

These authors have a magic ability to take deeply flawed characters and blend them together, to somehow heal their backstories by the connection of vulnerability and love.

The tango
The first kiss
The incredible intimacy
Enemies to lovers
On-page rape
Torture/gore/violence

Two men with horrifically tragic childhoods, learn to deal with their trauma in very different ways. Nero becomes a self proclaimed whore, while Miguel is so enclosed inside himself, he rarely talks and doesn’t let anyone in.

I loved this story, but with one exception, and it was a big one for me.

Miguel? Whether he was a demon or craved to be one, his ink promised obliteration to anyone who stood in his way.

These two are a great pair. They balance each other out. Nero is outgoing, chatty, charming, whereas Miguel is quiet, stoic, thoughtful. Both of them are comfortable with violence and relish in it.

Nero knew him, connected with him, liked him and needed him in ways no one else had. And in turn, Miguel was discovering a whole world of feelings for Nero, which he didn't dare put into words.

The pacing of this was really good. The dancing scene was a beautiful moment. You could feel a real connection between them.

“Maybe if you stick around, you’ll get to be what I see in you.”

This book felt more cartel/revenge/action story throughout the first half. As is common with K.A. Merikan books, there is plenty of violence to be had. That scene at the father's house was intense! There is very shocking scene later on that I don't want to ruin, but keep a look out! The romance felt secondary to me at least until you get about halfway into the book. That first sex scene though!!! WOW!! K.A. Merikan definitely know how to write a damn sex scene.

Miguel might as well rip his heart open already, because having sex with Nero had been nothing short of transcendent. Never before had he desired a man enough to act on it. Watching attractive pieces of ass had been enough, but the presence of this man, with his teasing nature and contrarian personality drove him mad with the need to connect physically.

Miguel really needed to learn how to communicate better. Thank goodness Nero was so freaking nosy and never gave up on him. They were both so loyal to one another throughout the book and that was one of my favorite things about them. It was interesting to see how many times they were able to save each other throughout.

“I don’t fucking care who you used to be. You’re the man I met three years ago. Fucking grump, and yet so much fun to be around. You are mine now. I forbid you from ever dying, do you understand me?”

Felt really bad for Miguel so many times in this book. He's been through so much shit in his life. He was dealt a difficult hand and did the best he could with it. Nero being in his life actually turned out to be quite a blessing, for both of them. The way that Nero was so supportive of Miguel through all of his struggles was impressive. He really is more than just the obnoxious persona that he often projects outwards.

“My heart died long ago, but when I was inside you, I felt alive. As if for those few moments, your heart beat for us both.”

As a last comment, a few times I was totally getting some Dex vibes from Nero, which made me wonder, could you image if those two hung out?! LMAO. KAM - Can we have them meet up for a short story???

i love it - i hate it - i love it - i hate it - i love it? ❤️‍🔥
I'm not a fan of the last 50-70 pages. Up until then it was absolutely perfect. I'm not removing a star in the rating because it was very good despite the last somewhat weird pages, even though the book certainly doesn't make it on my "awesome list".

“Oh my God. My life is a telenovela.” - exactly my thoughts 🙄

The book is brutal and a wonderful piece of violence and trauma as only K.A. Merikan could write, but the last few pages full of cheesy romance and then added melodrama were a bit much.

I fell in love with Nero from the first moment on. Even though he is initially portrayed in a bad light only from Miguel's point of view, I immediately felt a connection to him.

“I do have two holes, Miguel.”
Miguel was glad for the dark hue of his skin, because the heat triggered by those words reached even his ears. He was thirty, had seen shit that would give most people nightmares, and had committed crimes without blinking an eye, yet this man, this spawn of Satan, was still able to make him lose his tongue.
🖤

Miguel is theoretically the slightly better person of the two but at the same time much harder to capture. It took me a while to really understand him and even then there were many moments when I had to roll my eyes.

The tango scene … 🖤🌹🌹🖤🌹🌹🖤🌹🌹🖤

And it's words like these why I read these dark books:

“I feel alive with a cock in my mouth. And when a man rides me, it’s a fuck-you to everyone who ever tried to tell me how to live my life and how to be a man. There’s this spot inside me, and when it’s poked with a dick, it drives me crazy, Miguel. Nothing else matters when I’m pinned down. I hope that’s how I die. In ecstasy and pain.”

Gritty, violent, action-packed and filled with an unexpected sweetness.

Nero is the son of a cartel boss. He's loud, flashy and in your face gay. Oh, and he has his teeth filed down to look like a shark 🤷‍♀️. His father is unimpressed given he is the sole heir to the crime throne.

Miguel is his bodyguard. He's surly, stoic and tortured by the history his family has with the cartel. He has managed to get close to Nero for one reason and one reason only and he will not be moved from that path (revenge obviously...).

Now I'm not always a fan of this hidden revenge motivation trope because I don't love the level of deceit that accompanies it. So it was with some trepidation that I started this book but oh my goodness - what a wild ride!

The character development here was terrific. I could really feel both Miguel and Nero's conflict. For Nero, about his life choices and for Miguel, his sexuality. Oh poor Miguel, raised to be nothing more than a weapon, in an environment that allowed him NOTHING of his own. No feelings, no sexuality, identity beyond what was dictated for him. My heart just bled for him.

And speaking of blood? This is probably not a story for the faint-hearted. There is torture and a fair bit of gruesomeness. Its in keeping with the story but heed the CW!

And there is beauty in their first kiss, that tango 🥰, Miguel's unceasing care for Nero and Nero's care for Miguel's sexuality.

I loved this - can't wait for my next KA Merikan read. They are becoming a fast favourite!

DNF @ 65%

I received an arc of this audiobook from GRR.

I tried sooooo hard to continue this but I just couldn’t do it anymore. Idk if it’s the narrator or the story but it just did not work for me.

Immediately I wasn’t a fan of the narrators accents for the characters. The setting of this book was Colombia, so the narrator constantly put on a Colombian accent for each character and I don’t understand why the author didn’t just chose someone with a Colombian accent to narrate the book. Idk maybe they tried to find someone, but either way personally this narrator did not work for me.

I wasn’t sure then if my issue with the narrator was making me have no feelings for the characters. The main characters of this are Nero, the son of a cartel boss, and Miguel, his bodyguard who’s really just trying to get close enough to Nero’s dad to murder him. Nero’s father murdered Miguel’s sisters and father when he was younger, and his mother wants him to get revenge. So he spent a few years working his way up in the cartel to get close enough to Raul to kill him, and that is how he got in his position of being Nero’s bodyguard.

Nero is a wild child, love to party, loves sex, and desperately wants to get into Miguel’s pants. Miguel is the opposite and refuses to admit that he is gay and attracted to Nero no matter how much he doesn’t want to me. This was just supposed to be a job for Miguel, but spending time with Nero made him realise that he shouldn’t be blamed for the sins of his father, and he starts to grow fond of him.

For a cartel story, this wasn’t too dark which I appreciated. There is murder, and no one feels bad about it, but aside from that Miguel and Nero’s morals are quite on the good side.

Unfortunately even tho this all sounds good, I just had no feelings towards the characters, and the plot wasn’t working for me either. I don’t have any real negative points about this book (except maybe the first sex scene which was a let down), so I wouldn’t tell anyone not to read this. It’s seems to be popular with a lot of people, so I think I’m the problem here.

I confess, this took me awhile to finish.

Why? I don't know. I think the first half was just...slow for me. Part of it was reading another book for a day, but also getting distracted by fic...but at least with the fic, if this had been keeping me glued to the pages, I wouldn't have gotten distracted by the fic.

But...I did. I don't know why.

Maybe because this was a proper slow burn romance between Miguel and Nero or something, I don't know. The first half just dragged a bit and I can't really get a grasp on why it did. It just did. And is the reason for my star off.

But, I've been waiting for Miguel and Nero's love story since book six of the Guns 'n Boys Series and overall it did not disappoint.

Nero, we knew as a hot headed, wild child with filed teeth of all things, died hair, and lover of lots of sex.

Miguel was the strong, silent type who was broody as they come. And, we find out, a virgin. Mainly because ever since he was a boy, he's had one goal.

Kill Raul Moreno for what he did to his family. Miguel has been living, it seems, for just that and that alone.

He and Nero have known each other for 3 years at the start of this - so maybe about a year or two after Dom and Seth left, if I remember the timeline correctly - and for the past few months, Miguel has been Nero's personal bodyguard.

At first, Miguel disliked Nero as well and didn't think much of him. But the sins of the father don't deserve to be passed down to the sun. Nero is definitely not his father, and there's more to him than meets the eye.

And actually fairly early on in this, around 37%, Miguel fulfills his lifelong mission of killing Raul Moreno.

The rest of the book is these two on the run from the cartel now that Raul is dead, and trying to find a way out of running for the rest of their lives.

There's already something there between Miguel and Nero before they have to go on the run, but when Miguel does it, Nero doesn't kill Miguel, and actually kills his father's bodyguards to protect Miguel - and also, at first, because now Miguel must protect Nero at all costs.

Because the cartel most certainly will not accept a gay guy as their leader.

As they go on this journey, they fall in love, to both of their utter surprise. Because Nero never thought he'd ever love anyone, or be devoted to just one person when before he had sex with whoever he wanted, whenever he wanted. But Miguel is special.

And for Miguel...he never planned on giving into his desires for anyone, ever. He desired before, he found men attractive, but he never felt the need to be with anyone. After the trauma he faced as a boy, the thought of strangers touching him outweighed his need for sex.

But of course, Nero is different. Nero pushes all of Miguel's buttons and then some. He the one man Miguel, eventually, just cannot resist - although he spend a good long while doing his damndest to do exactly that - and incidentally, the only man - person, really - he'll ever be with in his whole life.

Nero, the man who thought he'd never be able to have just one man, falling for Miguel, and Miguel, the man who thought he'd never have anyone at all, giving into his feelings for Nero.

There are, of course, twists and turns throughout this, and this is a dark mafia romance, so there is of course violence and gore and disturbing things that happened/are mentioned. What Nero's father once made him do...the random farmer these two run into on the run who turns out to be more than he appeared, and in no way good...

But there are also some good surprises near the end, and these two eventually do get to have their HEA, hobbled by the dark life they've led, but happy, in love, and finally safe.

I was as torn as Nero was near the end, wanting the bad guy to be short mercilessly by Nero, but letting him go was the only way to ensure his and Miguel's safety and freedom to go and live a normal, happy life. It sucks, but it had to be done for their much coveted HEA. Bruised and battered, but alive and free to live their own lives how they wished to.

In the end, I was so happy with this. It really picked up past the halfway mark as well, and I was in it from then on, rushing toward the finish line.

We got to see so much more depth to these two side characters turned MC's, and I loved it. And of course, the long journey toward falling in love, towards trusting each other, and because each other's whole worlds. It took a lot - a lot of pain - but they got there, eventually.

I definitely recommend this. Part of me is bummed this was a standalone, but also it worked to finish Nero and Miguel's story in a great way and ensure their HEA, which is all I could as for, at the end of the day.

Oh and also once the book finally got to the steamy scenes? *chefs kiss* it was oh so good. These ladies can just write the steamiest sex scenes and they are oh so delicious to read.

Two thumbs up from me, for sure. While the first half might have dragged a bit for me for reasons I don't know why, in the end this was still definitely worth the read and the wait. It, in the end, did really well in bringing Nero and Miguel's love story to the forefront.

Can't wait for more from these ladies! 😍

Genre: MM Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: Third Person - Dual
Rating:

After years of planning his revenge, the end was within Miguel’s grasp. But he didn’t expect how Nero Moreno would change his life.

Miguel and Nero were completely opposite but absolutely perfect for each other. Their sexual chemistry was also explosive, adding another reason why I loved them.

“But I don’t know how to act around you now. I was never… important to anyone.”

I enjoyed the overall storyline, especially with Miguel’s background. There were plenty of actions with some gore in between.

Love Among Reptiles is a story of vengeance and redemption. It would appeal to readers who enjoy dark MM romance in the cartel world.

Y’all know I’m obsessed with K.A. Merikan & they didn't disappoint!
This was one of my most anticipated reads

In a dark world, born into power-hungry cartel dynamics & violence,
Miguero were wholesome grumpshine personified and I loved to join them on their joyride to a hard earned HEA!

I often have to justify why I use the word ‚wholesome’ while talking about a dark-romance, well it's a wholesome romance duh!!!

But yeah, we’re definitely not talking cozy, smooshing, glitter sunshine.
This story is dark for a reason! And in classic K.A. fashion, I got yet again, another story that doesn't do "MC survives it all in unrealistic ways" but more "dark things happen, and sometimes also to our "heroes" ... it's hands down something I highly appreciate, bc I really feel this is something authentic, and gives me all the things I need to be hooked with not just the MCs but also the story!!

He was thirty, had seen shit that would give most people nightmares, and had committed crimes without blinking an eye, yet this man, this spawn of Satan, was still able to make him lose his tongue.

While I loved to see behind Neros sunshine persona, I also loved to get more from my favorite sad-grump Miguel, his heart has so much room for love, so glad Nero is determined to fill it up to the brim!

Three months into the job, and no rival cartel member, jilted lover, homophobe, or jealous wife had shot Nero dead, so Miguel was doing something right.

Honestly, they are magnificent…while their ‘joyride’ is actually more a slow burn road to hell and back with some gorey shock thrills, they’re also quite emotional.
Or at least I was (a bit) emotional while reading!!

Nero was the human equivalent of a Venus fly trap.
Enticing as the sexiest women yet aggressively masculine,
he confused Miguel in ways he wasn’t ready to explore.

The pace was perfect & gave me room to enjoy how their characters evolve and their relationship developed (communication is key guys!) but I wouldn't necessary say it was slowburn, I think a lot already happened around 45 to 50% and for me it was definitely a great medium paced book and
it also made the intimacy between them so much more delicious!

“Liking someone and wanting to fuck their brains out are two different things.”
“But they can go together just fine,”

I’m already excited to start a re-read, or rather ‚listen’
bc I know I will not only devour them over and over, I’ll also discover, many of classic well-placed easter eggs Merikan style

By the authors:
Themes: enemies to lovers, cartels, revenge, masculinity, coming out, first times, opposites attract, betrayal, double-crossing, undercover, grumpy/sunshine, crime, traumatic past, road trip

*4.5 stars*

I knew I was going to love this before even starting. Miguel was a very intriguing character, he stood out like a neon sign in Bloodbath. Turns out he was nothing like I expected him to be, but I liked him even better. Now Nero...ok Nero was bad. But I like the Merikan brand of bad and it could have been worse.

The action was top notch, like always, and I loved that THE THING happened pretty early on. It was a pleasant surprise.

Overall, I loved it! I would have loved a little Dom and Seth in there, although I know it didn't fit the narrative.

Huge thanks to Caia for recommending this book—it was a wild, unforgettable ride! Let me start by saying this: it’s a *very* long slow burn. At 50%, I was still waiting for the sparks to catch fire. So, if slow burns are your thing, this is definitely the book for you. That said, be warned—this novel tackles some incredibly heavy themes, including violence (gore), sexual assault, homophobia, hypersexuality, and various forms of child abuse (physical, mental, and sexual). A lot of what happens on the page caught me off guard, so tread lightly if you're considering this one, y’all.

Initially, I was leaning toward a 3-star rating, but after reflecting, I’m settling on 4 stars. As a rule, I don’t summarize plots, but the gist here is two main characters entangled in the Colombian cartel: one seeking revenge and the other yearning for trust. Nero was, hands down, my favorite character. His defiance of traditional Latinx machismo—being openly gay, sexually free, and unapologetically himself—was such a standout for me. He’s the polar opposite of what you’d expect in a “gang member,” and I loved every second of it.

Miguel, on the other hand, was... okay. He had a compelling backstory—surviving childhood trauma, taking on a near-impossible task, confronting his sexuality, and falling in love—but his actions near the end kept me from giving this book a full five stars. At the 90% mark, just when he needed to trust Nero the most, he doubled down on his martyrdom, and it cost him (literally) his tongue. That moment frustrated me to no end.

The subplot with Miguel’s sister felt tacked on as well. The ending, though sweet, bordered on unbelievable. Elisa shows up, finds her brother mutilated and in love with the son of her rapist, and is just like, *“Yeah, cool”*? Then suddenly, *poof*, happily ever after. I could’ve bought into it more if the resolution hadn’t been rushed into the final three-ish chapters. Honestly, if the author had trimmed 15–20% of the slow build-up and used that space to flesh out the ending, it would’ve made a world of difference.

Now, onto the good stuff. The Latinx representation here was fantastic. Believe it or not, this is the first book I’ve read with *two* Latino main characters—and one of them, Nero, is Colombian (whoop whoop!). The story’s Colombian setting felt vibrant and authentic. Sure, making a Colombian character part of the drug cartel is stereotypical, but beggars can’t be choosers, right? Beyond that, the descriptions of the landscape, food (hello, arepas and ajiaco!), and dancing were delightful.

Speaking of dancing, I wish the scene had focused on cumbia or salsa rather than tango, which isn’t as culturally prominent in either Mexico (Miguel’s heritage) or Colombia. Everything else felt spot-on, so why not that? Still, the novel’s exploration of machismo in the Latinx community was thoughtful, and seeing Miguel and Nero’s romance overcome those barriers was deeply satisfying.

In the end, while the pacing and a few narrative choices left me wanting more, the representation, setting, and themes made this a worthwhile read. It wasn’t perfect, but it’s one I’ll remember.

4.5 stars. Nero is the heir of the largest cartel in South America. Miguel is his bodyguard, and Miguel has only one purpose in life… eliminate Nero’s father from the world. Revenge is what Miguel lives for, the rest doesn’t matter because he’s already dead inside. After he fulfilled his task, he finally can finish himself.

“Not having sex was easier than dealing with any fallout it might cause”

That’s Miguel’s life, the opposite of Nero who can’t live a day without getting his ass pounded.
Nero’s life exists about partying and sex.
He’s lethal with his filed teeth, he’s vicious with a baseball bat. Imagine the sound when it hits a skull.

While Miguel is his bodyguard, Nero didn’t expect him to really save his life. That shifted something in Nero.
They are more alike than Miguel could ever have guessed.

They got dangerous men on their heels, and more than once they’d just escaped, but they also got captured, imagine what happens in dark rooms… *shudder*.
Miguel is a man who wants to keep his word, keeping Nero safe, with bullets flying around, both men are getting closer, emotionally, and physically, Miguel is different from all the men Nero had before.

Nero and Miguel are both traumatized by their past, behind the charades you find two guys who are afraid to dream and even dear to want more from life, than the shitshow their currently living, away from Colombia. Who knows maybe dreams come true.

My goodness, what an eventful journey, so many things to experience, there’s danger and blood, vicious men, and between all this violence, there are even some moments to relax and time to watch something grow between Miguel and Nero.
It’s all super thrillingly written, I was on high alert all the time, the turns in this story were unexpected and I love that in a read.
It’s a raw, tough, intense, brutal, violent story, keep the trigger warnings in mind.
A large read 117K full of triggering events, strongly written, endlessly captivating, not one dull second, sexy at times, yes even emotional, but above all, it was a tough, vicious, dark story to digest. I enjoyed it very much!

This was the kind of book on which you want to take the main characters and hide them, just to protect them from the authors. What could possible have done this two guys to deserve all this hell they went through?. Ok, they arent exactly innocents, but, come on, they didn't even had a few seconds of peace. That being said, I loved it.

I think the characters are remarcable,  particularly Nero, whose chapters I love the most, because they allowed me to see inside the mind of this fascinating person. Miguel was also an amazing character, so determined and, somehow, rightfull.

The plot was enthralling. I struggle a tiny bit at the start, for it being too slow, but I guess it was needed, to get to know better the main characters.  Before we get to the second third, it starts a fast pace that makes it impossible to put it down.

As for the ones looking for romance here, there is some, but you shouldn't expect pretty flowers or a  romantic date night for this two or you will end up being very disapointed.  What you will find is strong emotions, a struggle to come to terms to them and  two explosive personalities that will make us see fireworks.

As much as I loved the book, I do recomend to anyone thinking of reading it, to give a very slow read to the warnings and take them very seriously, this isn't a sweet romance book. It's full with questionable actions, a lot of violence and a lot of subjects that might not be suitable for any reader.

4.5⭐ for this story and rounding it up, because it pulled me in - pulled me in after countless of books in the past few months that weren't memorable, had no substance and you couldn't pay me enough to read them again.

This was a fantastic story with two amazing main characters, a good, really well thought-out plot that kept me on my toes all the time and yes, I do wish Nero and Miguel would get a sequel.

🟣 Cartels, Colombia
🟢 2 Hispanic MMCs
🔴 It said opposites attract but I don't see them as opposites, more like enemies even though they're in the same cartel and work together
🔵 A bit of an age gap, max 5 years, older MMC in his early 30's
🟡 Gay/Virgin, closeted and demisexual (Miguel's a demi, I'm positive)
🟠 It's dark, but I'm maybe used to it already, wasn't as dark to me, still ❗ -- murder, torture, SA, kidnapping, human trafficking
🌶️ Fantastic smut, descriptive sex scenes -- could be more, kissing, hugging, cuddling; virgin t/p bottom

The story has a really good plot, it has the constant element of surprise, something's always happening and you never know what's it going to be. So in that respect it was really, really interesting and it would be fantastic if this were a series in this world that Nero and Miguel have created anew.
It would be pretty cool.
But on the other hand no, I want Miguel and Nero to have their own little secret, private paradise in hiding with noone knowing about it.

Nero was the infamous son of an important cartel boss, he was a gay man which wasn't lightly accepted, he lived luxuriously and wasn't really treated well by his father while whoring around and killing people left and right.

Miguel was his bodyguard of 3 years and had a front row seat to Nero's way of life, his constant flirting and trying to get Miguel to have sex with him, but Miguel's got his own reason to stick with Nero and when the time finally comes to revenge the death of his family, he kills Nero's father and then elopes with Nero.

Miguel and Nero

While on the run, their romantic relationship starts developing, they go from co-workers to friends to lovers but the way the feelings evolve is really well written and believable. Miguel is a virgin, closeted and a demisexual so he's trying to come to terms with his sexuality while being on the run with the most openly and flamboyantly loud gay man who's also offering himself on a silver platter all the damn time.

But it's definitely not just the sex, even though it's hot when they're at it, it's so much more than that and it was amazing to see them growing into that intimacy that neither one allowed themselves at any particular point in their lives, especially Nero, for him to go from this superficial guy whose only purpose in life was looking out for the next best dick, to someone with a lot of substance, devotion and loyalty.
The fact that Nero was willing to take the plunge and open himself up to a potentially real thing with Miguel was brave and amazing.

Miguel's stoic, silent, efficient and is experiencing love and a sexual partner for the first time in his life. His experiences are well described, gentle, emotional and passionate. I loved everything about it. I think this was one of those rare true depictions of a demisexual. It's worth the read.

What really got me here was the love story itself. It's a slow burn but the sexual side is present all the time - it's there, it's in the air, it's potent and lingering, and when it manifests it's not only fireworks, but so damn emotional. Believable. And tangible.

“Where is your pride?” Nero interjected, climbing even closer. His breath smelled of rum as he grabbed Miguel’s braids and rose to his knees, barely visible in the dark. “You want me to just go off to some dude and get my dick sucked while you wait?”

Miguel growled and grabbed Nero’s arms. “Of course I don’t want that! Makes me want to kill every fucker who even has a mouth. But I can’t do this, and I want you to be happy.”

“Then kill every fucker who approaches me, and keep me in line,” Nero shouted in his face, grabbing the front of Miguel’s T- shirt.

After going through so much shit, they finally got to be together, but the price was quite high. I can't say I was on board with it. I really wasn't. Miguel's final punishment could've been prevented, it definitely changed their lives completely, but it's a dark romance, and Miguel and Nero are hardened criminals, so nothing is easy in their world.

Yes, I'd definitely like more. But the bonus chapter that was a deleted scene from the book - that was a good call to leave it out. It's not a good scene.

Will there be a sequel? Or a new series?

Arc review for “Love Among Reptiles “ by @ka_merikan

I absolutely loved this book! Miguel and Nero live now and forever rent free in my mind!

This book was so well written that you almost forget that you are praying for HEA for some nasty people!

This story is full of adventure, action, cartel nasty shenanigans, betrayal, hight libido, pain, gore, violence, friendship, love, feelings, trauma, sacrifice and above all redemption!

Nero is restless in living is life free and enjoying the most because being the son of a cartel boss, life is short! Miguel is his bodyguard, but had some secret agenda and nothing will get in his way! What they didn’t count was for Love!

They are both so strong characters who we’re dealt with terrible circumstances in their life and had to make some dubious and terrible choices, but end up, even in the middle of cartel horror, having their HEA!

They are so badass in appearance and actions, but beneath all those tattoos, piercings, guns and easy killing, you have men with huge insecurities and in simple need of a love, cozy, sexy hug, some rough f*cking or bj 🥹

The sex was, god…… so incredible, powerful, sexy hot AF, rough and so passionate that it really blow my mind! Nero a green force of nature 💚and Miguel is…perfect 🖤

My only regret was not reading Boys and Guns first, but that’s about to change! Seth and Dom here I come!

I received this Arc from @gay.romance.reviews and this is my truly honest opinion 💚🖤

Audiobook Review

Listen, this story is extremely dark. I'm not going to sugar coat it, but y'all, this is at it's core about two men who found their fated mate. And believe it or not, they did deserve it.

Ok so in here we have Miguel, a man who was raised to kill the man his mother blamed for ruining her family.

We also have Nero, the son of the man Miguel wants to kill.

Miguel is from Mexico where his father ran a small cartel, Nero is a green headed out gay man with filed shark teeth who does whatever his father tells him to.

These two meet while Miguel is a bodyguard hoping to get close enough to the head honcho, but did not expect to fall for Nero as Miguel is closeted and has never had sex.

Nero has all the sex but has always wanted Miguel.

After the revenge finally happens, these two go on the run.

Bad things happen, done by them and to them. Some things were really hard to listen to. But the only one parachute scene was lovely, tbh.

During this whole time, they supported each other and learned how to love, as neither had ever had it. Miguel letting his fear allow him to finally touch Nero...oh my goodness.

Man that ending got to me. I loved it

Hello, dark romance. We meet again!

Reading K.A. Merikan is always a ride full of feelings, darkness and instense situations. And it's always a pleasure. When I first saw this new book's cover and read its blurb, I was instantly in! And no, it didn't let me down even one bit.

We have Nero and Miguel as our MCs. The first, the son of a Colombian cartel's boss; the second, his Mexican bodyguard that has a secret agenda of his own: avenging his destroyed family by killing Nero's father.

Nero is not the typicall mafia son. He's out and proud and doesn't mind who dislikes his sexuality (not even if the hatred comes from his own father). He likes fcking, and isn't subtle about it. Miguel, on the other hand, is the exact opposite: disgusted by his own attraction for men, he tries to deny himself and tries not to acknowledge the way Nero makes him feel.

The romance was pretty good. It builds slowly as the book goes, but you can't help to crave more and can't wait to reach the moment Miguel caves in and acts upon his attraction for Nero. But also, it was also unexpectedly sweet and tender somtimes. And yes, I can't help but love when romances, dark or not, feel balanced. And this one did.

We have many different phases for the plot, both romantic and the cartel/revenge realted one. Nero and Miguel can be many things together: sexy af, hot, infuriting, hurtful, tender, protective, etcetera. There's not only the fact that both feel attraction for the other (which is pretty clear early on) but there's also a hint of forced proximity that impeds Miguel from running away from his own feelings any longer. There's so much temptation one can endure, right?

At certain point, I found myself thinking "it wasn't that dark", but then things happened and... I couldn't have been more wrong LOL Some scenes were crude and hard to read. It is weird for me to say it was amazing? I love getting surprised, and I can't deny some things happened I didn't see coming. At all.

So, I would say this was an addictive read not apt for those who don't like dark romances (and of course, don't forget to read the TW if you need to!), with a couple of guys trapped in a world of violence and darkness they can't seem to escape but who find in each other someone to treasure and someone to trust. Their romance is bumpy and full of obstacles, but as they keep running for a better future their love grows and it's a beautiful thing to read.

How can something so violent, graphic and bloody still move me to tears??? Well people...this book right here...OMG...so much going on...kept me on many highs with definite lows. Miguel and Nero adventures will keep you on your toes...twists and turns galore but you will definitely find instances when romance wheedles it way in and grabs you with the feels. The ending could have been tragic but it was a win for them and it was very satisfying... What can I say but be cautious when reading...if you don't like gore and violence...this is definitely not for you...sex, violence, mayhem and romance...I LOVED IT! 5 STARS!!!!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

“You might be numb to your own heart but I could feel it against me. And I wanted it to beat for me, even though I don’t deserve it.”

I really appreciate K.A. Merikan’s skill at taking morally grey characters and giving them such beautifully emotional stories. This has all the action, drama, violence, and spice I’ve come to love from them in a fun Cartel setting.

Miguel has infiltrated the Cartel to exact his revenge and while working his way up the ranks, he becomes the boss’s son’s bodyguard. Nero is openly gay and perpetually h0rny, with bright green hair and shark-like teeth. Miguel’s not supposed to like him, let alone lust after him!! But after events cause them to go on the run together with just about everyone they meet trying to kill them it’s impossible to keep his distance.

I love that there’s such a heavy focus on their developing friendship before we get to the romance. Miguel knows he’s attracted to men, but he’s deeply in denial about it as well as being demisexual. Nero awakens a lot of complicated feelings for him and as someone who was never allowed to feel anything he’s got quite the journey to go on to unpack it all.

Not to mention they keep getting shot at! The action in this was so exciting!! Never a dull moment for these two 🥰👌🏻

Thanks to the authors & Gay Romance Reviews for the ARC - all opinions are my own.

I experienced pain but not as much as the characters did. Poor boys, they didn't catch a break until the very very end. My heart wasn't ready for what this book gave me, nevertheless I really liked it and I want to hug Nero and Miguel, put them inside a safe bubble and keep them away from everyone who wanted to hurt them.

There are a lot of TW/CW so please check them out before starting. If you're reading it you'll find yourself in a chaotic and messy situation where nothing is granted, well maybe only suffering, that was ever present.

Nero is the son of the cartel boss Miguel wants to kill. Why? To avenge his family. He becomes Nero's bodyguard to gain loyalty and the opportunity to get closed to the boss. But Nero is out and loud gay with a string of one night stands that sometimes he has to witness and Miguel, so deep in the closet due to stuff, finds himself hating and intrigued by Nero's sexy shenanigans. Even more because Nero has noticed he isn't immune to him and wants him in his bed, but the constant flirting doesn't seem to work with Miguel.

When they find themselves in a very difficult situation, things start heating up, but sadly these two really can't catch a break and every two minutes a new danger comes along to interrupt them but at least that helps getting them closer.

Love Among Reptiles is a fast paces, action packed, bloody, and emotional story about two men who grew to be someone they didn't want to be, and how life give them a chance to a future where both can be happy, hopefully together.

I almost never read dark romance because my heart can't take it, but I'm really glad I listened to this because 1) the audio was excellent, and 2) I couldn't stop listening I was so invested!

Definitely recommended if you're okay with the CW.

I have to do something I hate to do, especially with an ARC. This is not holding my attention at all. I’m not liking the characters. This is rare with a K.A. Merikan book but I will not be able to finish this.

Of course this is all my own issues, the writing is great, as usual, with their books. This one seems to be a crazy ride. Maybe it’s just me in this moment and I am sad to put this one down.

Thank you for the ARC, I wish I could finish it.

Darum geht’s:

skim-read

Mini review:

I’m not rating this book yet because I admit I did skim read this through the author’s Patreon as the chapters were being released. And they were released kind of spaced apart and I have the mind of a goldfish, so I do want to go back and throughly read this before doing a full review.

Content notes for what I noticed so far include homomisia, violence, murder, mentions of the murder of family members, mentions of child rape (in the past), rape, character losing a body part, mentions of kidnapping, and suicidal ideation/attempted suicide.

For the most part, I did enjoy this book. I was looking forward to this book a LOT and I think on the relationship-side, this story with Miguel and Nero did meet my expectations and I do really like them together. If anyone knows me, it’s that I don’t typically love bodyguard romances. But is this a bodyguard romance if both parties are both equally good at killing?? Who is doing the protecting at that point? lol Miguel and Nero are great.

I wondered how they were going to get their HEA and they do get that. It’s a sweet(-ish) ending but there are some things I’m feeling a bit undecided on.

1.) it might have been a blink-and-you-miss it moment, but I didn’t see any mention of Seth and Dom from the Guns n’ Boys series. I know this is meant to standalone and I’m not sure where this book falls into the GNB timeline after they all split ways, but any mention would’ve been nice. Update March 14, 2023: The authors uploaded a crossover between Seth, Dom, Mark, Griffith, Miguel, and Nero, and now I’m much more satisfied (but still wish there had been something in the book).

2.) this is silly but I wish we saw Miguel indulge at the end with his love for Legos. Update March 19, 2023: okay maybe the authors read reviews because a new short has been posted on Patreon with Miguel and his Legos lol I am pleased with the new story 😌

3.) the events between the ending and the epilogue just felt so rushed because there are HUGE changes and I feel like even though this is already a long book, we missed out on an entire storyline in between? I don’t know. The ramifications of what happens at the end is too great to just leave it all like THAT and now I feel like I want a short story to fill in that gap.

4.) I’m sad that one of the POV characters didn’t get his own epilogue chapter from his perspective. I was waiting for one more chapter and nope that was the end. So that did feel disappointing.

Those are just my initial thoughts on the book. I did enjoy it but the ending is what leaves me feeling a bit adrift. I’ll be back to fully review this once I get a chance to reread it.

It’s a complex story with so much to think about. At times frenetic and with exhilarating plot twists that keeps one on the edge wanting more.
The main characters live their lives opposite, but they’re so alike. The mental path they both walk is awesome, so many nuances. This kind of mind developing journey usually amazes me with this authors.
It’s also a pretty good Spanish, just a few mistakes.
I rate it only with three stars because of two things. The broom incident, and that it’s the second book in a row where main characters loose parts of their bodies, I’m not happy about it, sorry. I want the bad guys getting what they deserve when possible, not the morally dubious protagonists.

«Sometimes, it’s easier to just be heated. Then, you don’t have to risk trusting people».
