The affluent Hardy family is stunned when Nathan, the eldest son, enlists with his three best friends to fight in the First World War, without any prior warning to his family or his girlfriend, Doris. Shortly afterwards, Jenny, the closest friend of Doris, also signs up for duty as a nurse. Their lives are about to change beyond recognition. At the front, with life in the trenches and new weapons such as poison gas appearing, Nathan and his friends encounter a situation not at all like the great adventure they had anticipated. As people from very different backgrounds are suddenly thrown together, the novel shows how friendships and romances are forged between the classes. Meanwhile, away from the action, those at home also see their lives dramatically altered. Not all our protagonists will survive and World War One leaves an indelible mark on those that do. These returning soldiers and nurses, profoundly changed by the war, feel disappointed by people often failing to understand their traumatic wartime experiences. They embark on different personal journeys, trying to overcome their horrific memories and to rebuild their lives.
The story and the characters grew on me with every page that I read. It's a great first novel. Once you start reading it, it's hard to stop until you finish it.
