I found this to be a good introduction to ornithology even as just an amateur backyard birder. The author resides in the UK and mentions mostly européen species which some casual birders may not immediately recognize. Whether you are just beginning studies into ornithology, casually reading on the subject, or are an academic, if you find yourself fascinated by birds you will benefit from and enjoy reading Essential Ornithology.

I read this at random times over the course of 7 or 8 weeks. It was such an adventure. At times I opened it and got an immediate existential crisis wondering what was I doing reading what felt like a paper before going to sleep. At times it felt surprisingly chill and relaxed.

The book is good, though. Wouldn’t recommend to a causal reader. Definetely would not recommend if you don’t like birds.
