GWYN

I am a husk seeking oblivion.

Broken after the death of her parents, Gwyn Parsons self-medicates with alcohol and skin contact. She doesn't forge real connections, and she's lost sight of who she even is. Prompted by the memory of a past betrayal, she decides to be vulnerable. Allowing a friend to coordinate a matchmaking photo shoot with a stranger, Gwyn takes a step toward something dangerous and unpredictable.

Something she can't control.

ROMAN

Her heart is better off in a box than in my hands.

Roman Sauveterre's search for his brother's killer, murdered while looking for the last two vampire hunters, has brought him to Gwyn Parsons. Where his brother and those before him have failed, Roman will not. Set to inherit leadership over his vampire coven, Roman must prove to his father he deserves it. Taking out the last threat to his people while avenging his brother's death should suffice. He knows everything there is to know about Gwyn and her father, far more than she seems to. Not convinced that the walking disaster of a person he's stalked these last few months could have had anything to do with his brother's death, he seeks answers by getting closer. When his patience pays off and he finds himself posing for steamy photographs with the last living vampire hunter, her apple pie scent and body in his hands are a temptation he doesn't expect. And when his father demands Gwyn's heart, Roman must make a choice.

When Gwyn's inner thoughts are silenced by the inimitable Roman Sauveterre, she is drawn to him in a way she fears. And when Roman starts to question his loyalty because of her, he knows a decision must be made.

But will either of them survive it?

Urban vampire fantasy with some serious mafia romance vibes.

I think there’s a swath of people that are gonna DNF this book. Don’t. Just don’t. The ending alone will bump it up an entire star rating for you. That’s the kind of ending that warrants an immediate reread.

Woah... damn.

Feathers From the Sky by Jess Wisecup
(Hunting Vengeance Duet Bk 1)

He’s seeking revenge and she’s barely hanging on…

Gwyn has been in a fog for months.. Drifting through life like a wraith, she’s hardly engaged in her life. When a friend sets her up with a stranger for a matchmaking photoshoot, she’s not expecting the intense chemistry and thrill she gets from his touch. Maybe she’s not as lifeless as she believes..

Roman can’t help but be moved by the voluptuous beauty when he gets his hands on Gwyn at said photoshoot. But what Gywn doesn’t know is that this is NOT the first time Roman is seeing her. She may have seemed like a disaster during his months of stalking his prey but he’s not so sure. He believes she knows more about the disappearance and suspected death of his brother than she’s willing to admit.

When he finally gets his hands on her, he will use all his powers of persuasion and coercion to get to the bottom of the mystery. He’ll use every tool in his arsenal, including turning her own desire for him against her, to get what he needs. The only problem is, as a vampire, he shouldn’t find Gwyn, the last living vampire hunter, so appealing.

My thoughts:

I have so many feelings and emotions from the cliffhanger of this book. I knew I would enjoy a vampire romance from this author and that was absolutely true. But it’s hard to put into words what worked so well about this story for me without getting into spoilers. I highly recommend you go in blind to this one but I also understand if the middle part will have you questioning your feelings. Because I was for sure!

I enjoyed the beginning and the cat and mouse game between Roman and Gwyn. Then we shifted into a different phase of the story and I was a bit perplexed. I was making notes of things that worried me and I even messaged the author with some frustrations. Haha! There seemed to be some character inconsistencies and I wasn’t sure I was following along with everything correctly…

But then… HOLY SMOKES. I literally can’t say anymore because I refuse to ruin such amazing reveals and a mind-blowing turn of events. I would say I had no clue but I think that the fact I noticed something was “off” might be me noticing something, lols! But that made it so much fun.

Yes, there is a cliffhanger and I WISH we could know more right now, but I also think I will enjoy some speculation for now and build some anticipation for what comes next. We get everything so quickly these days.. This felt like a season finale where you have to wait til the Fall to find out the aftermath. Remember those days?

Anyway, also, a moment should be spared to mention the great plus size rep in this story. As the author has stated, it was very important that Gwyn is okay in her skin. That was very comforting to me throughout this story. And Roman, for all his dastardly plans, is fully on board for her body type. And boy, does he show his appreciation.. Many times.

I am at 4.5 stars for this one but I will be persuaded to raise that depending on how well the promise of the cliffhanger is played out.

4.5 stars
3.5 on the spice scale

My jaw is on the floor as I write this review and my feelings are over the place. I don’t know whether I want to scream or cry I guess I will do both 😭😭 Jesus take the wheel 🤣😫

This is a vampire/vampire hunter enemies to lovers story. It’s spicy 🌶️ and filthy which is what I needed. The FMC is a curvy, strong but not annoyingly strong and battles depression—she’s one of us.

The twist at the end you will NOT see coming. It will hit you in the face and leave you shook. Reader beware.

Patiently waiting on the second book in 2024 😊

This is going to be a negative review/rant.

I'm afraid that this might be where Jess Wisecup and I part ways. I loved the Divine Between series, and I was looking forward to this.

It's obvious that most of the reviews here are from ARC readers and I really wish that there was more authenticity amongst ARC readers because people like me spend money on books based off of reviews and past experience with authors and its annoying when a book is poorly written, poorly paced and filled with plot holes but still getting rave reviews.

Anyway. I dnf'd this book at 97%. I could have finished, but in all honesty, I dragged my entire ass through 97%, and I didn't want to waste another second on it.

To someone on the outside looking in (through the lens of the authors' social media accounts), it seems like there were sufficient hands in this pie. Sensitivity readers, editors, alpha readers, etc. So how on earth did we end up here, with a book whose opening sentence is:

"Sweat-slicked skin and the taste of tequila on my tongue have become a symphony of self-pity and the need to forget; it crescendos in an angry forte while I make poor decisions in piano."

What the shit does "make poor decisions in piano" mean??

And that should have been a red flag. It should have been because this clunky, weak attempt at poetic language continued for the duration of the book. With gems like:

"When I see his water bottle on the table, I swear and adjust over him to grab it, hoping his own tequila sleep will keep him from waking."

ADJUST OVER HIM?

Or

"He obeys, leaving as I suck on her leg, sunlit apple memories setting my taste buds alight as I hum in pleasure."

SUNLIT APPLE MEMORIES? WHEN "MEMORIES OF SUNLIT APPLES" WAS RIGHT THERE???

And

"My fangs extend in my mouth, the idea of sharing Gwyn’s blood with anyone else, an idea which sours my stomach."

LIKE?!? THE IDEA AND AN IDEA? I CAN'T.

Oh, not forgetting:

"He asked, and I acquiesced without question"

Acquiesced means to agree without question. That is the definition of the word.

Out of all the words in the dictionary, these are the ones she decided to string together?

Y'all said to stick it out for the last 30%, and I almost did. But I would like to end this rant off by saying that we shouldn't have to struggle through 70% of a book to get to the meat. A book shouldn't be deserving of 4 or 5 stars because 30% was so good you forgot how godawful the other 70% was.

And if you're thinking about reading this for the spice, pick something else. The spice was as convoluted as the rest of it. In fact the first time they bone is reminiscent of SJMs moans drowning out the screams of the dead or dying. Just naff as all hell.

"Her existence in my curse, and her death is the only remedy."

First Thoughts:
THINGS SHE DID: THAT. ENDING.
IM SCREAMING

Review:
WOW this book was such a journey and so unique! We follow Gwyn, who is the daughter of a famous vampire hunter, but seemingly unaware of this fact about her family. Roman, a vampire whose own mother was murdered by Gwyn's father, is set on getting his vengeance against her family. What starts out as a mission for revenge soon spirals into something different as Gwyn and Roman find themselves drawn to each other despite of their dire circumstances.

This book will play with your emotions like no other! As always, the writing is sharp and story-telling very clear. I loved the dual perspective as we see Roman and Gwyn falling deeper into each other as the novel progresses. The urban paranormal world was gritty and dark and wasn't afraid to pull punches.

Gwyn is a plus-sized heroine and completely confident in her body. Roman is also husky, and I loved the way each character talked about their own bodies (as well as each other's haha). The spice is definitely fast burn, and SO GOOD, but yet still serves a purpose in the plot. I thought this book was brilliant!!!

This book BLEW ME AWAY. The writing, the plot, the twists, the tension, the smut, all 10/10.

The plot is fresh, engaging and kept me guessing the entire book. I stayed up all night to finish this masterpiece, and I’m still thinking about the twists days later.

The FMC is soft and kind but sassy and strong at the same time. The MMC is a big viking-like vampire who is obsessssed with her, but in denial about it 👩🏻‍🍳 💋

Jess Wisecup is a phenomenal writer, and somehow managed to write this contemporary paranormal romance in a lyrical way.

This is a top book of the year for me, and I’ll be biting my nails waiting for the second half of this duology!

This book includes:
Stalking
Obsession
Kidnapping
Forced proximity
Delicious Tension
Grief
Murder Mystery
Betrayals
Twists and reveals!

Huge thanks to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Also there’s smut and it’s very hot.

Genre: Dark Paranormal (Icelandic Vampire Lore)
⭐️ 4/5
🌶 2.5/5
🧠 3/10
Noteworthy: Dark themes include depression and suicide ideation. Book 1 of a completed duology. Check TWs. Available on KU.

Never in my whole life have I been so close to DNFing a book at 50% and then have it turn out to be what I would consider incredible by the last page. The last 50% came in hot, and that ending was so freaking diabolical! It's been a long time since I've felt like this from plot twists.

The 2 mains are like 2 toxic magnets. Both are driven wholey by anger, sadness, and self-loathing. The MMC Roman is a lot at times. He's often his own worst enemy, even at the best of times. I wanted to dislike him so many times but ultimately felt like he was just incredibly stubborn and refused to get out of his own way. The FMC is struggling with survivors guilt and makes one's self-destructive decision after another. She has growth in this book but struggles throughout with the way she sees herself. With this being a book one, we don't get final versions of either character.

If you can handle watching characters go through depression and self-harm ideation, you should pick this up. The ending is so worth it. It's one of the best most insane endings I've read, and I've read a lot. I will never forget it.

That ending! Damn. I really enjoyed this book! It kept me guessing throughout. There are a few things that irked me - the writing was overboard descriptive at times and the world building was essentially nonexistent. I’m hoping some weak points get cleared up in book 2. Overall, it was a good story! Also love a relatable FMC - both in size and in mindset. A lot of things she said or thought really hit home for me.
Bring on book 2!

What I just went through in that last 30% I can’t even put into words at the moment. HOLY. SHIT. Gwyn has high high high potential to be one of my favorite characters next year once book 2 comes out, her personality and background is an amazing set up. As an urban fantasy it was easier to follow along but also cool to see in what ways the fantasy elements interwove with our world. I wish there was more of that integrated in the story but it’s also a series so there’s potential for more to come. I also thought the history of the curse & the ancestors was interesting though I did have to keep flipping to the first page as a refresher in fear or mixing up a name lol.

Overall: obviously the ending of this book rocketed this book higher on a rating for me however the main thing I felt was lacking was character dynamics / the friendships in this book. There were glimpses of friendly teasing and giving each other shit but I wanted more of it instead the relationships in this book felt flat. Considering that a majority of these characters have been together decades since they’re vamps (or at least many many years for our human povs) they should have that easy connection makes it harder to ignore that flaw.

Man, being an alpha/beta/arc reader is so badass sometimes 💅🏻

Have you ever wanted a PNR with lyrical writing? Have you ever thought “man, I wish someone wrote vampire books for adults that aren’t cheesy and sparkly?” Have you ever wanted a plus size main character and a love interest with a lil belly where it WASN’T full of self loathing and wishing to be thin?

Well, take all that and add a dash of smut (okay, more than a dash) and mix it up with a plot that keeps you guessing and an ending that gave me whiplash so much that I need an ibuprofen, and you’ll have this book.

With impeccable phrasing, a stellar cast of broken and unpredictable characters, and the author’s dedication to providing a plus-sized heroine who loves her body enthusiastically, Feathers in the Sky is a surprisingly enthralling addition to the genre. It feels rooted in the now instead of leaning on the past as many vampire books tend to, and I look forward to the next installment.

Grumpily. 😂

Dark romance / pnr
I listened on audio & the production was fantastic!
This book is on the higher side of TW for me personally. I did know the content warnings going in so I was aware of what scenarios would happen, but I still found I had to skip some parts.
I absolutely LOVED the plus size rep of the FMC along with her mental health struggles.
The Twist at the end was so so SO good!!

Overall I love the authors writing (especially her spice) but unsure if this is a series I will continue due to the TWs, but I will check what is listed in book 2 before I make that call.

If you love darker romance with the vampire element I think it’s one you should try!

Wow!! What an ending!! Rarely does a plot twist leave me with my jaw at the floor but this book delivered!

This was my first book by Jess Wisecup and I’m so impressed. I listened to the audiobook and the narrators were INCREDIBLE!! Allie Shae nailed her role as Gwyn, our FMC. And Robert Hatchet as Roman, our MMC, was incredible.

Gwyn goes on a matchmaking photoshoot where she meets Rowan, a vampire. Unbeknown to Gwyn, Rowan has been stalking her for some time and is searching for his vampire brother. Gwyn has been dealing with a toxic ex and the death of her parents. Also, Gwyn comes from a long line of vampire hunters and happens to be the last one. From there we get forced proximity and so much more. Read this if you like:

🩸 plus sized FMC
🩸 paranormal romance with vampires, warlocks, etc.
🩸 forced proximity
🩸 blood play
🩸 political intrigue
🩸 spicy scenes

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

I’m so glad I signed up for an eARC of book 2 because I’m about to DEVOUR it after that cliffhanger ending!

The way this full reread hits..IYKYK!!!! I love them 😫❤️

✨My hand darts out of its own accord, fisting her hair and tilting her head back to look at me. "Careful," I warn, leaning over her, and her eyes roll as she closes them. She makes a faint humming sound, and it shoots straight to my c^ck.

I realize two things in this instant. The first being I've only ever heard her come silently, quiet whimpers breaking the stillness of her bedroom on late nights. The second? I need to hear those sounds in person.

Dark Vampire Romance 📖

✨I recently finished Feathers From The Sky, book one in The Hunting Vengeance duet by Jess Wisecup and gods….I am broken and completely undone by this story, and these exquisitely complex and tormented characters!

This dark vampire romance has forced proximity, forbidden love, enemies to lovers, the most torturous and delicious spice, and encompasses all of the components that I love most in fantasy, paranormal, and dark romance.

✨To say that I devoured this book is an understatement as I willingly lost sleep while completely immersed in the plot and feeling consumed by Gwyn and Roman. The scorching tension that forms between these characters is everything!

Feathers From The Sky has incredibly accurate mental health representation for both of the main characters and I loved the gut wrenching moments of vulnerability and honesty shared between them as the plot unfolds.

✨The romance that develops in this story is full of emotional complexities, raw, toxic, and yet entirely beautiful…I was left feeling breathless, absolutely swooning, and utterly heart broken and devastated.

Jess Wisecup has officially entered her villain era in this dark vampire romance and has unsurprisingly k^lled it! 😈

✨I highly recommend Feathers From The Sky to paranormal, fantasy, and dark romance readers as this story transcends typical sub-genre demarcations. Please check content and trigger warnings.

Available August 25th 2023!

My most genuine and heart felt thanks to @authorjesswisecup for having me on your ARC team. I can not wait to continue on with this duet!

I absolutely adore Jess Wisecup for her Divine Between series (5 stars, can't believe people don't talk about them more!!) so I was thrilled to receive an ARC of Feathers from the Sky. I do want to say a big thank you to Jess and her team for gifting me an advanced copy!!

I wanted to give Jess every benefit of the doubt, and tried to remain open minded throughout the book, but the lack of world building and context was painful. Why do we not get any context for who and what hunters, vampires, and the other magical creatures/beings are somewhere within the first 2-3 chapters for a little bit of guidance and background? What on earth is a matchmaking photo shoot and why did Gwyn choose to do one?? It made the plot and world building feel rushed and half-done, and the relationship/chemistry didn't feel very organic, which was disappointing.

That being said, there were some SJM-worthy reveals at the end of the book that significantly strengthened the plot and the spice was great. I also love to see a plus-size character who has done 👏🏼 the 👏🏼 work 👏🏼 to love her body and a love interest who is allll over it.

I understand why Jess kept certain reveals for the end, but I do feel like we could've had more insight into Gwyn's perspective/mindset without completely ruining the major reveals and it would've made everything feel a bit more believeable. I want to believe in Jess and I do remain a ride or die fan of the Divine Between series, but this one just didn’t do it for me.

You have to put this book on your radar! Jess Wisecup has once again put me in a chokehold. The way she writes her characters is just chefs kiss. 💋

The depression rep in this book made me feel seen. The plus size rep is top-notch 👌
And our FMC IS BI!!!

2 of my favourite quotes so far:

"Her existence is my curse, and her death is the only remedy."

“You were never my damnation, Roman. You’re my absolution.”

So here I am once again asking you to put the next big VAMPIRE novel on your tbr. You are not going to want to miss out. 🦇

Feathers from the Sky is an urban paranormal dark vampire romance that centres around Gwyn who is the last known vampire hunter, and Roman who is a vampire hell bent on uncovering who murdered his brother.

This is not like any vampire book I’ve read before, I was immediately drawn in by the writing which was surprisingly deep and lyrical at times. It also had me chuckling and kicking my feet. The chemistry between the main characters was electric and I had so much fun reading this!

I really appreciated the mental health rep and the FMCs struggle with depression was written in a way that was relatable and I liked that she wasn’t run of the mill in terms of an FMC. She’s plus sized with confidence and attitude, but at the same time she has a vulnerability and self belief that she’s not worthy of anyone. Roman is everything I love in an MMC, he’s a big tatted biker vampire who can turn on the charm when needed, but is also ruthless in his pursuit to seek vengeance.

I can’t even talk about the ending because it’s rare that a book shocks me, but the ending of this one had my jaw on the flaw.

Tropes:
🖤Enemies to lovers
🖤Plus size FMC
🖤Mental health rep
🖤Hate to love you

If you’re a dark romance girly who enjoys a good vampire story, this one will be up your alley!

Fun fact; say the word vampire and you will summon me. I am such a big fan of anything Jess writes, so as soon as I heard she was writing a book based all around my favourite topic of discussion and a further personality trait, I knew it would be going straight on my list.

That dedication and those tropes alone though had gotten my attention.

→ Paranormal Romance
→ Enemies to lovers
→ Curvy FMC
→ Mental health rep
→ Hidden identity
→ VAMPIRES
→ Urban setting

Gwyn & Roman have officially entered the chat and I am so excited to catch up with them. And yes I ate this and LEFT NO CRUMBS!! This was a fun time.

I have very mixed feelings about this. I did enjoy and I am moving on to book 2, but this dragged so fucking hard at multiple points in the book. There were times when it felt like the author was waxing poetic just for the sake of doing so, but with words that just didn’t make sense or didn’t add any feeling or emotion to the text. However, I am interested enough to see where this goes in book 2. Especially since this is just a duet, if it were more than 2 books I don’t think I’d continue past book 1.

Before you pick up this book, be prepared for an emotional roller coaster, especially that ending…I am still reeling over the completely unexpected turn. 🤯😵🤷‍♀️😱

“You could ruin my life, and I’d ask you to do it again.”

Firstly, if you’re looking for something with heated chemistry, the tension between Gwyn and Roman is off the charts, and fortunately Jess Wisecup does not make us suffer long before the spark catches fire. They’re basically channeling Selena Gomez’s Hands to Myself: “Can’t keep my hands to myself. I mean, I could but why would I want to?”

Beyond the spice, you’ll also get…
🧛‍♂️ Unique take on vampire lore
⚔️ Cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Vampire Diaries
💃 Female who loves and accepts her body as it is (there’s a fat shamer who gets what’s coming to them 💀)
🧠 Mental health representation

“These broken parts have sharp fucking edges.”

I absolutely love the mental health journey that our main character has been on. She’s broken and healing, and she’s willing to fight for herself and those she loves. Even if it means going up against a hot as sin vampire who wants to devour her.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (4/5)

Trigger warning: suicidal ideation

This book was such a wild ride! I love a hot mess heroine, and Gwyn did not disappoint. And Roman...oh Roman. The number of times this man made me blush... The tension between Gwyn and Roman was off the charts, the side characters were so fun, the plot was completely unpredictable. And then, there was that ending--blowing my mind and leaving me stunned. I cannot wait to see where this goes.

Wow! This book is fantastic! The multitude of twists and turns left me with whiplash. I was so captivated by the story that I found myself reading the entire ending with my mouth hanging open in a mix of shock and awe. This vampire romantasy is unlike any other vampire book I've ever read, filled with surprises that set it apart. Jess has a talent for crafting strong, yet relatable main characters. One such character, Gwyn, bravely tackles mental health struggles that are often difficult to talk about. However, it's incredibly important to address these issues and let others with similar struggles know that they are not alone.

Audiobook Review:

Feathers from the Sky was unlike any vampire romance I’ve read before. Of course, it had the expected themes of what vampires do and what they’re after. But Author Jess Wisecup’s story draws readers by beginning with a contemporary vibe of photo dating match-making services while building up to a vampire/hunter world where demon bl00d and captivity are weaved through.

Yet Feathers from the Sky is filled with angsty grief, heartbreak, spice, vampires, and twists—lots of twists. Gwyn’s depression and some substance use are incorporated, both unusual in a vampire tale. The story is perfect for readers not big on world-building fantastical stories but wanting to dip their toes into paranormal romantic themes.

I listened to Feathers from the Sky on Spotify. The narration brought the characters to life with narrators Allie Shae and Robert Hatchet.

The drama continues to the end but with a cliffhanger. Fortunately, the next book is due in May.

I loved this book! Jess writes such great characters and I love the positive plus size rep (with both MCs!!!)!

I am a sucker for a good vampire romance, especially a vampire/vampire hunter enemies-to-lovers situation and this book did not disappoint.

I don't want to share too much as the plot is definitely best with no spoilers but that ending has me so ready for book 2!

Y’all know I love when a book catches me off guard and THIS IS THAT BOOK!

This is a darker, paranormal romance that covers a variety of difficult topics from self love and acceptance, mental health to familial death and grieving. Jess handles all of these topics with care, vulnerability and awareness. It was so beautifully written that it allows readers to feel seen, understood and represented. I wasn’t expecting that from this book and it just goes to show how incredible of an author Jess is that she can write such a captivating novel filled with vampires, plot twists, spice and dark romance yet include healing and cathartic moments throughout.

I don’t want to spoil anything but I will just say that Roman both broke and healed my heart. And Gwyn is a badass.

What you can expect:

Kidnapping
Forced proximity
Mental health, substance abuse, self love/acceptance
Enemies and/or lovers
Vampires and other magical creatures
AMAZING 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Deeper themes (definitely read CW)
Plot twists 👀
So many good representations throughout 👏🏼

This was a top read for me this year! I definitely recommend for my dark paranormal romance friends- as always read CW prior to reading for your own mental health!

Enemies to lovers to enemies remains one of my favorite niche obsessions. The crimes women can commit that I'd justify remains unmatched. Gwyn, queen, you dropped this. 👑
