Watching Peter and never having him filled me up with an ache so deep, so empty, I was sure nothing could hurt worse.
That is, until I had Pete.
And lost him.
I hear Peter, I feel Peter, but I also know the dead don’t come back.
Unless, of course, Pete isn’t dead at all and a certain Whitcomb-I-Used-To-Have-Clown-Hair spiked the metaphysical epi-pen, so he could keep us apart. Although, it’s kind of hard to fake someone’s death when you can feel them inside your heart.
Metaphysical bonds between Humans and Lesser-Breds aren’t supposed to be possible. But then, I’ve been breaking the rules all my life, so what’s one more to add to the collection?
Georgia born and bred, I am an artist, a writer, and a general pain in the ass. I spend most of my days working on my next book or bettering my art. Writing is my identity and I love every minute of it. It's work, lots of work (sometimes I work 12+ hours a day and I never get a vacation) but I don't regret doing it. I currently share my house with a myriad of dogs, a few cats, a saltwater aquarium filled with coral and fish, as well as my partner who's great at giving hugs when the day's been rough. And of course, my editor and PA, who helps me keep life reasonably organized. At least so I won't walk out the door without wearing pants.
I kinda knew where this was going before it happened--that's why it's not five stars. Didn't impair my pleasure, though there was some pretty quick resolution to what was a persistent problem. My favorite part?
I'm hesitant to write this, as so many others have such glowing things to say about this book. I just really didn't like it.
I think to make this easier I'm going to start with the things that either didn't work for me or confused me, and then I'll end with the things I did like.
What didn't work for me Maybe I'm giving in to my silly inner-romantic too much here, but finding out you have a theoretically impossible metaphysical bond with your lover that lets you feel what he's feeling and find him anywhere he's at? Why does everyone instantly jump on the "this is a Bad Thing" bandwagon? Yes, I know that Clown-Hair said it might kill Darwin, but they've faced the word "might" before without batting an eye. Now suddenly they're willing to try to destroy this unique and special thing that bonds them together without even asking any questions? Blech. Made me angry. And frustrated.
On a similar note... if this bond between Darwin and Peter is rare enough that it's never been seen before, why would there be a handy machine specially designed to break it right there in the lab?
The whole lab scene after the revelation of that one machine just came across as ridiculous to me. Where would the funding for all of these machines come from? Why would someone build these machines to deal with situations that are believed impossible?
Anyway, that's a lesser frustration. Second only to them agreeing to sever their bond without really ever giving it a second thought is my frustration over how Raithe is treated. Raithe saved both Darwin's and Peter's lives in this book--in Darwin's case more than once. He's the only one either of them had sex with in this book. And we don't even get to see him on-page or find out how he's doing after the whole lab scene. It just seemed that after everything he'd done for them, he deserved better than to be totally ignored at the end.
What I liked I liked how real Darwin's anguish was at the beginning when he still thought Peter was dead. I thought that was very well written. As was his excitement when he could suddenly feel Peter again.
I also liked finally getting to see Peter post-transformation. Darwin's awe was perfectly-pitched and just what Peter needed to hear.
Okay, so overall, I didn't totally hate it. I'm just sad that this is how it had to end. There are so many questions that weren't answered (and new ones that got raised after what happened in the lab!). And in spite of the epilogue-ish bit at the end with Peter and Darwin finally together in peace and both happy, I still felt cheated by not getting to know Raithe was okay too.
Only one favorite quote:
Raithe glanced down at me, his silver eyes dark. I would have said he looked scared, but it wasn't a big enough word. I needed something which said he was scared for me, scared for Pete, and scared for himself.

Sometimes it's not easy to find what we are searching for... [image error] but we must keep searching...
It's time for more of Darwin and Peter's story!
Darwin is depressed , with absolutely nothing to go on now. His life is now just keep breathing, waiting for his time to go. He can't eat, sleep... but, he is not alone. Raithe will not give up... the Lesser-Bred (aka, half dragon half human) is the only one by Darwin side, and he is determinate to take care of Darwin.
It's another short story, of a serie that still have my full attention. Each time, from book 1 up to now, #5, Darwin is the only narrator and I must say I'm very glad of this choice! He is hilarious, and so passionate! His love, or his hurt, is always so intense! So... so... genuine!
Certainly it's another 5 stars to a serie I'm still hooked on. I can't stop it... I MUST keep reading! ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This is the 5th and concluding novella in the Darwin's Theory novella series. The series definitely requires to be read in order as both the plot and the world in which it is set are complex and intricately detailed.
I found this concluding novella to be fairly predictable, but it was predictable in the very best of ways. (Pretty much what you would want to happen, happens...) Yet, as seems typical of Ms. Wilder's writing, there is a twist underlying it all, and I assume that the forthcoming Darwin's Theory 2 will based upon this 'twist'. Of course I may be completely off-base with my assumption, but I hope it is as the possibilities are intriguing.
On a personal note, I found that reading Blood Bonds (M/F), another novel starting a different series set in the same world, to be of benefit as the world's details became a lot broader and clearer to me. Other readers may find it to be of benefit too.
Good ending of a great little series with surprising twist at the end. I liked seeing another, helpless part of Darwin, although he is still bent little shit. Peter didn't have much space in the story, but - whoa! - did I like his change! Raithe had more prominent role in the story and I quite liked him. I wonder if he will have larger role in the second Darwin-centered series. Maybe even in the relationship with our boys? (And saying this is a big thing for me and a measure of how much I liked him.)
Wilder has great imagination. I'm looking forward to reading more of her dragon books. Highly recommended. Read in order!
You're going to cry some more. At least I did. Darwin's grief is palpable and believable. I liked Raithe before but now I love him as much as the other two. Darwin really does have a friend, a good friend, and that's sweet too. It's still angsty but not as much.
The finale is quite good, lots of action and suspense. I still didn't know how things would turn out and was moderately surprised by the end--the very good ending. I want to read more about these people and with how things ended, there is room for that to happen.
I think this is going on my favorite series shelf.
I was lucky to be given an opportunity to read it ahead of the published date.
I have been faithfully following Darwin & Peter's journey. In the last story, Lost, the ending was at its climax? Turns out anti climax after all.
This time, we get to know a little more about Darwin's physical body. There is something about him that keeps him apart from humans but not enough to be a Kin. The evil wants him badly. Death can be an illusion.
What I like is the way Adrienne takes the time nurturing her plot, introducing her imperfect character(s) into something we can relate upon in this fantasy world but not to the point of short length and slow paced. For someone whose patience isnt a virtue like mine, I get agitated waiting for the next chapter of the story but as what the earlier comments, I just had to know what's next. That's good work for a series!
PS.I hope Raithe would be the next character in the Grey Zone Stories.
This was the best of them all. I’m reading this series for a couple of days. I wasn’t really expecting to like it because it’s really not a subject I love, but I was intrigued by the author and I wanted to read one of her books and I choose those series and it was a great first impression. Once I started reading I just couldn’t stop. This, the last book of the series, was my favorite. I loved it.
It was bittersweet, it had so much emotions, I keep loving this characters, they’re so cute together. I was absolutely heartbroken at some parts of it, but that was something great to me, because I love a book that can make me feel something, even if it’s sadness and this was made a great job. I loved a secondary character that is present from the book 3, if I remember correctly, and I would love to know more about him, but other than that, I’m very satisfied by how everything went on this book. It had a great plot, all along the series. It had some fun moments and some other very sad. It had some fun and sweet characters. This series was so entertaining.
Overall this was a great first experience with the author, by this I would definitely will be reading more of her books.
What a great story, well written and flowed along great. I have to say I loved the style of this author which pulled me into the story right from page one.
Darwin is a regular guy living in what seems like a normal world but his life is anything but normal.
There are 5 books to this series that I read within a couple of days I was so hooked. And I'm happy to see there is now a novel to follow these 5 books, which I intend to start reading right away.
I read all five books and I must say that I want more. I want to know what happens to Darwin. All this time Adrienne had us thinking this was about Peter but in the end Darwin was the real target. I can't wait to find out what happens next. Plus I love Riathe. He seems to truly care about Darwin and Peter. I wonder if this twosome will become a threesome. No matter what this was an excellent read. Well done adrienne
Darwin and Peter forma great pair. I love reading about them. Hopefully, Raithe will not disappear from the scenery and we'll get to hear more from all of them.
This is definitely a series to read in order and to start from the first book. Found starts a couple of days after the end of Lost. Darwin is at Pete’s funeral and he is spiraling down fast. Pete and Darwin had not been lovers long, but they had been friends for a number of years. Now Darwin has a giant gaping hole in his life. Darwin is also feeling Pete in a way he never has before. The readers are shown a different side of Darwin. Darwin is still the same angry smart ass he has been from the beginning, but now he has a reason to be truly pissed.
Raithe has a larger role in this installment of the series. He is trying to take care of Darwin as he is crumbling from the death of Peter. It turns out that Raithe is an amazingly caring Lesser-Bred. I’m looking forward to where Wilder will go with his character.
There are some major twists and turns in Found. I’m talking major game changers. It seems that Serge was after Pete for reasons no one ever saw. Serge is willing to do anything to continue her research and experimentations on the Kin and Lesser-Bred’s. Pete and Darwin formed a bond, a bond that should not be metaphysically possible. I’m certainly looking forward to where this turn of events goes.
I received an advanced reader copy of Found. Book 5 in this series answers several of the questions from the previous. While I did anticipate how the story would go, I liked how Ms. Wilder showed Darwin's utter hopelessness. I'm still not a fan of Darwin. I still want to slap him up side the head, several times.
Peter on the other hand. Wow. I'm also surprised by how much Raithe is involved in this story. I'm trying to figure him out. I adore him. He's so much better than Darwin. Psst! Ms. Wilder ~ more Raithe! And I want a happily ever after for him!
This story moved very quickly and has me wanting more. I have all these questions about Darwin. I'd also love to have Darwin clean up his act, just a little bit so he isn't so loathsome. I eagerly look forward to the next series... Darwin 2.0. I recommend a reader to pick up the entire 5 books in this first series and read it one sitting. If you like angst and drama, this is the series for you. Plus, there's great m/m scenes. Hot!
I was correct; I should have stopped at the first book, better yet, never have read the first book LOL. This did at least keep my interest and that's because Peter was missing for the majority of the book and I didn't have to suffer through Darwin waxing poetic about how wonderful Peter is.
I thought as the series went along the world-building would make more sense. It didn't.
I've heard good things about Seven but I'm scared now. Not sure if I should take a chance on it.
I like the MCs, which is why I have such a hard time enjoying books where good guys get one bad thing after another thrown at them, over and over and over. It's frustrating and exhausting and it just stresses me out.
