When his father dies he seeks answers with his last living relative, his fathers brother Frank. Frank lives on the island of Maui and eagerly takes Max in as his own. Max soon learns that healing his past will be more difficult than he could have ever believed.
Max’s temper and indecision will send in motion events that will cost him dearly. He will test the limits of his powers and the new relationship with his protective uncle. He will gain a powerful love and lose another. Blood will be on his hands, forcing him to run away from what he wants the most...a new start.
Music is LIFE and the written word is our SOUL. Music and writing have been my true ambition since I was a child. I have used music in every form possible; writing it, performing it, healing with it, etc. I call it my "life's soundtrack." I have always written in some form; from comic books to screenplays to short stories and now the new "Ember Series." I have found a true passion for my stories and characters and am eager to share them with the world. See you on the next book tour...M.D.
Ember. *me no me gusta face* So, we have Max Valentine a screwed up dork teenager with some secret powers, I believe? And his life which "revolves around music and his love for it". So original. Fantastic. BRAVO. And one day he saves Asia Lyn Michaels' life. Asia is a spoiled cunt brat. And apparently she discovers Max's secret. Right. BORED.From that moment on they are connected, no matter how much they fight it.Such an epic read, right? Yeah, and the story becomes more spicy. Actually, Samantha Ann Summers a dumb girl is his soul mate. Whoa! Can you believe it? I can and I'm bored. Dude, where did I put the knife, I wanna cut my veins, it will be less painful than reading thisSHIT.
Blah blah. Let's skip the story. In the end "He will gain a powerful love and lose another."BULLSHIT!
Let me explain this bookgrime to you. Max Valentine is a retarded horny teenager who thinks he loves those two stupid bitches. You're a teen and you believe you've found your soul mate? Bitch, please.Cliche. Asia and Samantha, two fucked up cunts, fight over a loser. And something about some secret powers. The end.
This book has nothing original, it's full of crap. Do you really want to kill your neurons by reading this? DO YOU?
I'm truly disappointed that my colleagues are interested in this rubbish. And normally I do not criticize the authors but Madison Daniel is rude. He manipulates some naive 14-year-old blogger who thinks "Ember" is a master-piece and it needs to be published by a major publisher in my country??! THAT'S OUTRAGEOUS.
OVER MY DEAD BODY IS THIS SHIT GOING TO BE PUBLISHED IN MY COUNTRY, GOT IT?
All of you, who are spreading "the love" are patethic. This fake author doesn't deserve our attention. We Romanians are not his trash. I hope I made myself clear. I'm so disappointed. That's all.
This is my first review ever. I wish I was writing this review because this book was so incredibly awesome and life changing, but I'm not. I'm writing because I hope that this review will stop someone from reading this awful fucking book. If I succeed in making just one person not waste their time and save them from having this awful plot in their heads, I will be happy.
To start off the book is about a hotheaded, temper tantrum throwing, teen named max, aka mad max. He moves to Hawaii to live with his uncle because of family issues (spoiler: they either left him or died). We quickly find out max has a power over fire, and somehow this fire ability allows him to heal himself and others... Makes sense right? We find this out immediately because he really makes no fucking effort to hide it. None. No effort at all, he's all, "just let me heal this dog, now this girl and after I heal her I won't beg her not tell share my secret, instead I'll just let this bitch who doesn't even thank me for saving her life, stare daggers at me and walk away without a word".
Sorry, I'm too frustrated to even continue that... Let's move on to the other horrors of this "book", the writing is awful, and choppy. There is no real plot, just a horny teenage boy leading on two idiotic teenage girls, who after a day of knowing him fight over him. I would not want any teenage girl to read this book. It sends an awful message. He treats them horribly, starts fights, cheats on them with each other, acts like he's chosen one, then chooses the other an hour later. He claims he's in love with both, yadda yadda, typical love triangle, except this one is even more painful and deserving of rage inspired book throwing.
Characters: We have Madison valentine aka mad max. He is the fire controlling main character. He is basically a petulant toddler in a sexy male body. Also he carries his guitar with him everywhere, listens to shitty music and goes on and on about how important music is to him. He is in essence, a douche. Then we have his first love interest, Asia. Asia is beautiful, rich and a total stuck up bitch. She has control of weather and it rains and lightening flashes everywhere she goes. She pushes max away then pulls him backs and at one point gets an outline of her lips tattooed on his back. Which he agrees to on a whim, never even asking what she is having tattooed on him. I just, I have no words for the stupidity of this book.
Honestly at this point if you have read this far into this review and STILL want to read it, then there is no saving you my friend. It's all bad. ALL BAD. So bad I cannot write about it any further because it's hurts my brain to think that someone wrote this and actually got it published. And that I was dumb enough to read it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The story was catchy--here are my problems with it: elementary grammar and punctuation errors, lots of them, distracting amounts of them! Lethargic narration, lots of places they could have tightened up dialogue, plot, etc. First person narration by a character that can somehow narrate events with great detail that he was not there to witness himself. Abundant sexuality among high schoolers. Now while this may represent reality, I wouldn't recommend this to a teenager when the main character speaks of sex as a way to decide which girl he really loves. Which brings me to the point that Max is fabulousy immature, selfish, and a great slacker--what an imspiring character. Also, he's living out every teenage boy's wet dream to have two beautiful, popular girls fight for his love (Again, "love" is repeatedly used, when lust seems the driving force). I was confused by the use of a time stamp at the beginning of each chapter--completely unnecessary, unless you want to emphasize that sex, love, and murder can all happen as the result of teenage hormones in less than a few weeks. I would recommend finding a real editor and starting over--this book has great potential for certain demographics, but the presentation is currently extremely weak.
Max Valentine; a musician, romantic, an unshakeable past, hidden abilities..
Max is a Californian who was sent to Hawaii to live with his last living relative in a kind of means to start over. What he didn't expect was to have his heart pulled in two different directions and have to keep an eye on his famous temper. One that got him the nickname, Mad Max. There is his opposite, Asia, who can calm him with her beauty or touch. But Asia has so much of her own pent up anger and secrets that she can't let down her walls to let Max in. Then there is Sam, the girl who is like his soul mate that can slow Max's embers by showing a smile or lighting him up with her jade green eyes. Sam just can't let go of her past relationship with her ex boyfriend to really give herself to Max fully. Max has to figure out his feelings for the two girls. Though along the way he runs into bumps that change his life forever.
Madison Daniel did a phenomenal job writing Ember! This was my first male written book and I would not have guessed if I didn't know. The romance in the story is beautifully written and the heartache is all there to go with it. I loved that I felt like I was there in Hawaii living Max's life and going through all of his experiences. Ember was a perfect motion picture in my head as the words flowed, making everything extremely vivid. The story was kind of written in a diary format which I thought was very suiting considering a lot happened everyday. Though Max kind of got on my nerves with Asia and Sam because he kept switching back an forth between them. And with the ladies, at first I was torn between the two but I finally found that I was rooting for Asia. The ending left me on a cliff hanger that has me wanting Downpour so bad to find out what will happen next.
I have to say bravo to M.D. Hats off to you for writing a wonderful book with great characters to add to our never ending character crushes. Most definitely 5/5 stars and if you haven't added this book to your tbr pile, its a must!! Grab it as soon as it releases!!!
I would like to also add that PR is now an Ember Head :)
I really liked the premise of this book, and moreso the fact that it was written in a male POV. But that is about it, unfortunately. There was way too much repetition in this book. If I read about anymore lightening or thunder, I thought I might lose it. I understood why it was there, but wow! It was just overdone. It would make for a great drinking game, however ~ take a shot every time thunder is written. You'd be drunk by page 10.
I also didn't care for the fact that Max was so undecided about the two chicks in his love triangle. One second, he is absolutely in love with Asia, and then the next, he is all about Sam. I can understand feeling torn between two prospective girlfriends, but his waffling was like an watching an awful tennis match while on speed. Talk about some serious whiplash!
Overall, though, I think my biggest complaint has to do with the mechanics of the writing. The book is told from Max's 1st person POV. I don't mind 1st person whatsoever. However, what didn't make sense to me was how at times, Max would leave the scene, and yet continue to "tell the story" of what was going on while he was gone. That just isn't possible. This happened on more than one occasion. Further, there was a severe lack of continuity with the story. So many times, I had to go back and reread sections at a time. For example, one second, the characters are in the kitchen, and then next, Max is getting in his truck. What? How did that happen? And this would happen without there being any break in the conversation that was taking place. It really threw me out of the story.
All that said, it kills me that this book ended on a cliffhanger because now I want to know what happens. Maybe I can find someone to spoil me with the deets.
Hi y'all Anne here and I've just finished reading Ember by Madison Daniel and yes it's 4:56 am and I am writing my review because a book like this can not wait. Ember is an amazing book, I'm going to start right at page 1 where you meet Max and his suffering and turmoil is already painted right there for you in a heart wrenching scene that will leave you with a multitude of questions left wanting answers. The back drop for Ember is Hawaii and the author describes his locations and scenes in such detail that you can smell the salt in the air, feel the ocean breeze pull through your hair, or even feel the sun as it soaks into your skin. The details given allow the reader the ability not only to read a story but also play out a scene as if it were a movie, now helping this along is Madison Daniels' amazing idea of combining his book with a selected soundtrack and it works. It lends an ambiance to the chapters that gives the reader the gentle nudge to feel the scenes not just read them. Each chapter has an assigned song to set the tone and the mood, or sometimes intensify the already tense interaction between the characters. From chapter one there are notions set into motion that help build not only the story but each character line, from Max and the mystery girl cruising down the road locking eyes, to the careless tragedy that occurs forcing Max to push his limits within minutes of entering his paradise. Max is a tormented soul, he knows pain and bears a guilt that haunts his dreams and ripped apart his life. His lovable Uncle Frank is a heart warming guy who doesn't tell Max what to do he simply guides and supports him through his new life on the island. Max soon finds out that things are gonna go so right that it'll go wrong. Samantha and Asia have both caught his eye and he has both the girls attention, as different as night and day Sam and Asia they both volley for Max's attention. Max soon learns how special both girls are both to him and for him, but of course where a love triangle is involved someone is always going to get hurt. But who is strong enough to hold on the the fire that burns this passion. The emotional twists in Ember are insane it's like a time bomb on every page, just when you think you've figured it out guess again cause it's fixing to flip and break your heart. This book is a male point of view for most of the time which is nice for a change to get a little peek into how a guy sees and handles all the emotions of being different, new, afraid, and hurt all at once. The author kept the focus in balance the whole story it never wondered off or got confusing, it is an overwhelming ride through fire, lightning, and pain. From all those things comes discovery, understanding, and eventual healing. I cried at several parts in this book but the end was astonishing and had tears rolling down my face not for one character but for all of them! All the characters are bound together so tightly that for one to hurt is for all to be affected. I loved that I got attached to this book and was able to connect to the characters and feel for them. The music pulsed right along with the feelings and emotions making it that much more involving and capturing. I could quit reading tonight until I was through the whole book because the emotions and the music sucked me in and refused to let me go until my eyes welled up and the words The End came into focus. I couldn't think of a better way to read this amazing story than with its own beautiful music to coincide the rush of feeling and imagination. I was carried away into a story that was full of twists and turns that kept me gasping for air and my temperature rising. 5 out of 5 stars for Ember by Madison Daniel and 10 out of 10 stars for the combination of the music into the words there by transcending the read into an experience. Look, Listen, Fade Away. Downpour book 2 is next I'm gonna love this.
" Love at first sight . I've always heard that said in movies or my favourite books but i never believed in it for a second . Death at first sight . That was much more my style . You know tha whole James Dean kind of thing . Love fast , die young sort of culture . Soon enough i would have experienced both " - Max Valentine
With a beginning like that , how could one not read a book that i would like to call ' the experience of a lifetime ' ! This book makes me want to move to Hawaii and experience the events unfolding in the book with my own eyes .
Cover-Speak : I absolutely and instantly fell in love with the cover of this book . Why am i saying that ? Well , its because that i've come across a lot of books in my recent endeavours that feature couples , hot girls and hot guys , or nature related elements like Waterfall , Flowers , Mountains and many more . But not a Burning or a semi-burnt paper . Very different , very intriguing .
Ember tells us the story of 18 yr old Max Valentine , who is haunted by the nightmares of his past . In an attempt to re-discover life and make a fresh start , Max moves in with his Uncle Frank who lives in the Enchanting Maui , an Hawaiian Island . It is here that Max meets people who bring out the best and the worst of/in him . How these characters influence Max and in what way does it affect him is the story of Ember .
Things i loved about this book : 1) The Characters : The characters are so well written by the author , that they feel so real and an instant connection is made with them once the reader has completely faded away into the book . Max Valentine is my ultimate favourite . He comes across as a normal teenger with anger management issue . But these issue can cost him dearly if he does not learn to control it . Max is soooo much more than what meets the eye . A guy with a golden heart he has his set of insecurities . He is undecisive at times but i still found him to be the most exciting character in this book . Other important characters include Asia Lyn Michaels , Samantha Summers , Max's Uncle Frank , his best buds Kai and Marcus and ofcourse the bad guys !! All these characters are interesting in their own ways . I can go on and on talking about them but then i would give away possible spoilers and i dont want do that ;) 2) A feel of Hawaii : The authors description of Hawaii seems so real that i could actually feel the cool wavey breeze of the island carrying with it the sweet scent of the flowers and trees and the intoxicating and refreshing scent of the ocean !! Oh yeaaaaah !! 3) Music and story : I loved the electrifying combination of story and an awesome playlist . Yes , Ember comes with a personalized playlist created by the author himself . Each chapter has asong attached to it that sort of defines the mood of the chapter . Loooooooved it , best part about reading this book - two of my fav things in the world bought together !!!
Parting thought : What did i learn from this book ?? Well leaving the supernatural part of the book aside , the story is about redemption and forgiveness . I believe every human being makes mistake and everyone has regrets . But to learn something out of your past mistakes and never regret what choices you made in your life is living life to the fullest . Why am i saying all this . Point here is that Ember really gave me a lot to think about . It is the story of loving and being loved . There were times i could'nt stop myself from crying a little . And there times i laughed like really hard . On the whole a very exciting book . I was waaaaay to excited to read this when i bought it and i can proudly say it didnt disappoint at all . I wish i could give it more stars .. Madison Daniel is one helluva author and i cant wait to read his other works not the mention the sequel to Ember, Downpour !!
Man oh man!!! M.D. sure knows how to deliver the goods!!!
Madison Daniel could write the blurbs on the back of cereal boxes and I would rush to read them!! His writing appeals to me that much!!! I loved everything about this book.
So here's just a small snippet of it's awesomeness.....
THE COVER: Simply gorgeous!! As soon as I saw it I was just, WOW!!!
MAX VALENTINE: He's tattooed. He loves music. He plays guitar. He sings.... Everything I love in my book crush!! But this boy has endured pain!! He's endured heartbreak!! He's a little bit broken.... That just makes you love him all the more!! And he is about to have his world rocked by two very different girls!!
ROMANCE: I haven't read a lot of male written YA books that contain romance. But the ones that I have read have been pretty lacking in how believable that romance was for me. So I was a bit worried about feeling that sense of disappointment when I read Ember. But oh my gosh!!!This book oozes love, romance and passion so realistically!!! Madison Daniel has restored my faith that a male author can deliver some YA romance just the way I like it!!
MUSIC: This was one of the things that I loved most about this book. Music is such a huge part of who I am. I love it!! And so to read a book that featured music in such a way..... For me it was so subtle, but at the same time so prominent!!! There is music throughout the book. That's a part of who Max is!! But what grabbed me was at the start of every chapter is a song title that relates solely to that chapter. And the song choices were just perfect. I found that after I had finished each chapter I would look back again at the song choice to reflect on exactly how it fit. It wasn't until after I had finished the book that I went and listened to each song and really got the feel of it. What an amazing way to experience the emotions of a book!!
THE CHARACTERS: Sam, Uncle Frank, Kai, and Marcus were some of my favourites, but I even loved the 'bad' guys. They all had their place in the story and they all played their parts perfectly!! Outside of the romantic relationships in the book, I loved the interaction between Max and his Uncle Frank. There was such an ease to it.
So I say a huge thank you to Madison Daniel for writing a book that is still swirling through my head days after finishing it! Don't deny yourself the pleasure of reading Ember.... I guarantee that from the very second you start reading, you won't want to put it down!!
Max Valentine is not your ordinary, everyday Romeo. He has a history that haunts him day and night and he has abilities that can be both a blessing and a curse. Add a bit of a temper to that and things tend to heat up pretty quickly in this book ;) After the death of his father, Max needs a fresh start. He moves to Hawaii to live with his Uncle.
Asia is a mysterious local girl who Max feels instantly drawn to as soon as he sets eyes on her. She is beautiful and she seems to have a calming effect on Max and is able to sooth the fire within him. She also has a dark gift of her own.
Sam is your typical 'girl next door.' She's smart, and attractive and can 'fit in' anywhere in life. Max has feelings for Sam that he can't deny. He tried to keep her shut out but he found out that it was impossible. But Sam has a jealous ex boyfriend who makes life very difficult for Max.
Max is being pulled in two different directions and throughout the book, you can feel his confusion and angst. I must admit, I found myself changing my own mind several times about who I thought Max should end up with. Both girls are good for him in different ways. Ember is a compelling love triangle that is told from Max's perspective which I think is brilliant! It's very refreshing and appealing to read a story from the guys point of view for a change.
Another thing makes Ember so unique and adds it's own charm is that it has a excellent playlist of songs that help you to lock in the emotion for each chapter. I had a lot of fun looking up and downloading several songs and making my own Ember playlist ;)
The ending of this book is bursting with hot action that is sure to get your heart racing! I was taken on a roller coaster of emotions and my heart sank when I realized that I had come to the end of my journey when there was still so much story left to be told! I'm excited for the next installment of this series to make its way to my Kindle!! Please, HURRY!! ;) *I TRY to be patient....I really do!* ;) And just a side thought.....wouldn't this make a fantastic movie?!?!
Eighteen year-old Max Valentine has a blazing personality, and that's not figuratively speaking. The main character in Madison Daniel's novel, Ember, can literally ignite himself on fire when his rage takes over, which unfortunately is quite often. Max can only hope that moving to paradise might calm his burning temper. Max takes up his uncle's offer to move to Hawaii to start fresh after his father passes. Upon arrival on the small island, Max is captivated by an exotic beauty named Asia and whisked off his feet by a assertive little blonde named Sam. Double girl trouble is any teenage boy's fantasy, but it becomes a nightmare for Max when Asia reveals her mystery and Sam's jealous ex-boyfriend wants to pound his face in. How will he ever control his temper?
Author Madison Daniel sets his novel ablaze by relating the story of a lonesome boy's struggle to bury his inner most demons while still discovering who he is and finding his purpose in a world where the elements are the embodiment of humans. Each character has a unique and likable personality with dialogue carefully formatted to fit their persona. Ember will be sure to leave you with a burning desire to read the next book in the series.
WOW!! I just finished Ember by Madison Daniel and OMG….it was sooo freaking good!! I have been waiting for this book for soooo long…I can’t even tell you how long. And lo and behold, I had it sitting in my kindle…*facepalm* Madison Daniel has introduced us to a unique individual in Max Valentine and WOW, his world is filled with so much action, emotions, joys, heartbreaks, and of course MUSIC!! I absolutely love how much music is involved throughout this whole book. I know that it a testament to Madison himself, but being such a music lover myself, I was taken aback at how much it played in Ember. You could feel how each song played throughout the chapter and tied it all together. And, the music choices, PERFECT!! Love every one of them!! As I started Ember, I didn’t truly know what to expect…I have had several people tell me how much I was going to love it and LOVE it, I do…but as it has ended….I am still trying to wrap my head around everything that happened throughout. It is a book that captures you from the beginning. It is fun and witty. Great characters that will consume your thoughts having you try to figure them out and our hero, Max, is someone that I think everyone can relate to. And Max’s situation…lets just say, I am soooo eager for Downpour to come out…hmmm….How long do I have to wait??? UGH!!! A definite must read for 2012!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Max’s life hasn’t been easy with the ability he holds. His mother left him and his dad passed away. He’s moved to Hawaii to live with his uncle. New school, new friends, new life is all Max can think about until he meets Asia. Everyone fears Asia and the rumors are all around. She has abilities as well and is shunned at the school he thinks she should be going to. Sam is the girl that her dad works with his uncle for. She’s a beautiful girl that pulls him into a safe direction that he has never felt before. Kai is the friend that he feels like he has had a lifetime with. Max is drawn to Sam and Asia. His mind struggles with him as to who he should be with. Mia is a secret that he doesn’t want to share with anyone because of the pain it holds for him but he does eventually answer to her connection with him. Who should Max be with? Who is going to be there for him when his abilities take control and will she be too scared to allow it into her life? He’s being pulled in so many directions with his feelings, he is having a hard time deciding. Each girl makes him feel special in their own way but who should he choose? Wonderful story. I’m so glad I got my hands on it and I look forward to reading more of Mr. Daniel’s work.
Ok so I won't lie there were times I wanted to tear my hair out reading this. The love triangle aggravated the hell out of me. I absolutely am cheering for Sam! Oh that ending could not have been any better! Looking forward to the next book.

Max Valentine is ready to start a new life. After the death of his father, Max moves to Maui to live with his Uncle in a desperate attempt to start his life over. Max’s problems stream from a well kept secret, he has the gift of fire. A gift that has led to the death of a loved one, a tragedy he has yet to deal with. His move seems like the right decision until he met Asia.
Asia is a beautiful local girl that can calm Max simply with her beauty, but she also has so much anger herself that she can’t allow him in. On the other hand, there is Sam. A smart, artistic girl who appears to be Max’s soul mate. Something he cannot handle. Max’s relationship with both girls, his relationship with his Uncle, and his temper send him on an emotional roller coaster that would change his life forever.
Ember is one of the rare stories I read narrated by a male. I usually avoid stories where the main character is male because I can rarely relate to them. But Max was a different type of character. He’s charming and intriguing, filled with depth, turmoil, and all those qualities that make you just want to rub his back and tell him everything will be okay. He is faced with a lot of the problems you might find in a book narrated by a female, including a love triangle. Max is stuck choosing between two girls that both have issues of their own to sort through. This part did annoy me a little. He is constantly going back and forth between the two girls throughout the novel. It’s a little jarring coming from a male, and I wasn’t expecting it. However it doesn’t overshadow the story or make it so you can’t read and enjoy the book.
I also enjoyed Max’s ability. He has a gift that causes problems in his life. Nevertheless he has learned to control it and even use it for healing, which adds to the dynamic of the novel. I must also point out how each chapter is associated with a certain song. This works beautifully as it sets the tone and mood for what you are about to read and often times controls the intensity of each chapter. It was a risky move but it worked. And it’s something I would like to see used again.
Madison Daniel did a great job writing a whirlwind story. It’s a great read that I highly recommend to both teens and adults. I would definitely – and will definitely – read this book again.
Am I the only one who didn't love this book? The cover is great, though.
First things first. The commas. As I've said before, I found the lack of commas disturbing. Every time I read something which needed a comma but there's none, I wanted to freaking bang my head in the wall. Idk if it's just from my ebook or not. Most likely it's the former because would they publish a book with a lack of commas? I don't think so. Still, my it irritated me.
Max. Ah, Max. He's really a two-timing guy with special powers related to fire. He can heal his wounds because of this(the fire thing, not because he's a two-timer), which I found kind of doubtful. I mean, you can heal broken bones and whatnot by using steam and heat?! Okay, I'm no science girl so I can't know for sure if the author's got his facts right or not. I'm just saying that personally, I find that kind of weird.
He's also really moody and temperamental, and most of the time it's so sudden it makes him look bipolar. One minute he's talking to Asia, the next he's pushing her to say The Three Words. There's nothing special about him, actually, aside from his powers, so it beats me how two girls fight over him.
The two girls in his life are Asia and Sam. Asia's the bad girl, Sam's the goody-two-shoes. I'm totally rooting for Asia. Once you've finished this book, it's quite obvious whom he's gonna pick, I mean, heck, he even chases the girl. Which we'll probably see on the sequel, which I'll read only because I really want Asia and Max together. And I also want to see them being able to consummate their relationship without creating a freaking natural disaster or whatever.
The bad guy in this book is kind of a downer. I mean, a bitter ex-boyfriend? Lame.
The thing that I was looking forward to was the explanation of Max's powers. How he got it, whether it was inherited or not, etc. Sadly, there's no explanation, which was also a downer. Not once did Max even ask those questions, which is ridiculous. Wouldn;t you want to know how and why you have your powers?! The whole book is actually focused on his petty problem between the two girls, and I thought there must be more to that, but there wasn't. There was pretty much little substance and depth to this book.
I gave it two stars because even though this book was a letdown, I liked the concept of Max and Asia's powers and how they're opposites and all that. It didn't deliver, but still.
Max is an 18 year old boy with an incredible gift. Haunted by his past, he moves in with his uncle, the only relative left that hasn't abandoned him. Two girls playing tug of war with his heart. Who will he choose? It took me forever to read Ember. I had quickly read around 200 pages when my E-reader charger decided to die on me, so, it wasn't a borefest or anything. It was just down to technology. When my charger finally came back in stock (Useless). I left it on charge all night then got stuck in again, staying up until late to see what was happening. It is filled with loveable characters and one character in particular you just want to murder and wouldn't mind doing hard time for it :P Max makes friends pretty much straight away. He is a really easy character to fall in love with. His friends Kai and Marcus are also very funny and sometimes have a lot of foot in mouth moments through-out. Asia, I wasn't fussed on first. I don't really know why. She seemed cocky and arrogant, and she was pretty much like that all the way through but her character really grew on me once I got to know a little bit about her. I felt sorry for her a lot, she was very lonely and kept pushing people away. Sam, is really sweet. Everyone knows a Sam in real life I think. You fall in love with her character, and then at one point you hate her, but then forgive her. The book is a real rollercoaster ride on your emotions. I cried at a couple of points, then I would be smiling like a Cheshire cat. Then I would be angry. The ending. Wow! What can I say. I did not expect that at all. I wanted there to be more pages on my E-reader but unfortunately... there wasn't :( Max's power is incredible, and very different. Other than not being able to control it during sexy time's, I would love to have the power. Think of the carnage *Insert Evil Laugh Here* It is a very powerful, emotional, and all round lovely book. I give it 5* and would recommend it too everyone :) Big kudos to Madison Daniel on your epic début novel. Can't wait to experience more of your fine work. Also, bring on some more amazing song choices :)
A most intriguing book, the story of Max Valentine, a supernatural fire-wielding healer who has arrived in Maui Hawaii to start his life anew after tragedy has torn his family apart. After his father dies, he now is sent to live with his uncle Frank in the beautiful island of Maui. What an awesome backdrop for this mystical and fiery read. The author Madison Daniel describes it with amazing detail and vibrance. The characters were enticing! Madison writes his characters with all senses in mind. You feel, taste and see them as you read his flowing words. Max is a typical teenage boy, filled with angst and a darkness that he carries so deep inside–it affects his days in many ways. He meets two girls on the island that he immediately feels intense feelings for. Your everyday sweet girl-next-door Samantha and the reclusive hauntingly beautiful Asia–a water wielding girl who’s moods control the weather. Max finds himself in major trouble as he is torn between the two beauties. Others aren’t so happy with his choice in women and the dangers that swirl and grow around him intensify as he tries to make a decision between the two and risks his own life in the meantime because of it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it was intense, dramatic, enticing and sucked you in with every word. Magical storytelling that will keep you up reading to the last drop. Madison also has a soundtrack to this book and highly encourages one to listen and read at the same time. This is something I do not do, but I did listen to each track, which are listed in front of each chapter, before reading the chapters themselves to capture the mood that was meant for them. An amazing musical ride, don’t miss this. I read an originally self-published version of Ember. Ember will be re-released in March of 2012 with Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing.
I was suckered in by the reviews and started reading this and the only thing I got out of it was that Max was incapable of coherent thought in most instances. The situations were stupid (unless you like reading about kids in high school) and the reactions of the characters were laughable if not so poorly written, i.e. who wakes up from a near fatal accident , watches somebody miraculously heal them and walks away without a word. This book was a total train wreck and I am very suspect of all these glowing reviews. The fact many of them mention the author himself in glowing terms set off an alarm or two in my sham review-o-meter.
I was really excited to start reading Ember, not only because of the great buzz, but because it's setting is in the place where I grew up... Maui, Hawaii. It was awesome to actually know, and have been to the locations mentioned. And, my hubby is a graduate of Maui High School! Lol :) First off...I loved how it has a male MC. I haven't read too many novels where the lead is a male character, but it was a very nice change. This is a story about a boy, who has a deadly secret. One he's been running from. He moves to Maui to be with his uncle, and hopefully find himself and some peace. Well...in a nutshell...Max meets two beautiful girls. It's a love triangle thing, and I found myself wavering...Which one he should choose? The beautiful, island good-girl Sam, or the mysterious, bad-girl Asia. At the end of Ember, I think Asia had my vote. (You'll have to read to find out why...) This story had romance, music, humor, action. Max definitely left a mark on me, and I am anxiously awaiting Book 2 - Downpour!
Oh my! The only thing that would make this book better is if Madison Daniel sold the book along with the soundtrack! This way you could listen to the music while reading!
Everything in this book will keep you wondering what's going to happen next. Before you know it, it's over, leaving you yearning for the next book.
As with all my other reviews, I don't like to go into much detail as I'm never sure who has read the book already and who hasn't. I will tell you that you will get mad, sad, almost cry, there's laughter, you will feel heartache, and you will want to yell at some people in this book. But most of all you will want more!
Do yourself a favor and read this book. It's a nice easy read and thoroughly captivating.
The main character of the story is Max, who has a HOT temper, literally! He falls for 2 girls at once. Can you love more than one person with all your heart and soul? This is something Max must ask himself numerous times, after having his heart broken more than once. Each girl does their damage, in more ways than one. There’s something different about Max, quite interesting in fact. And he manages to find his balance from each girl, in different ways. Asia is who he falls for first, and she is his exact opposite. She is hot, smoky, and rich. She has unique talents as well. Then there is Sam. Sweet, girl next door Sam. She seems to calm Max down without even trying but just by being there. You’ve got Devon, who is the bully/badass wannabe of the story. He and Max clash instantly. There’s a huge scene, well more than one actually, where they come to blows. And every badass has his gang; Devon’s got the 4 horsemen.
EXCERPT: Max meets Asia
I let the remaining fire flicker along my fingers as lightning flashed above me. It was so close that I thought if I reached up I could grab it out of the sky. The sight of lightning that close should have scared me something awful but it didn’t. What did send chills down my fiery spine was the flash of white fire above me made no sound at all. It was accompanied by something much more startling….the sound of someone screaming. I wasn’t alone. I found that I could not speak, I could not move as my body had frozen stiff as stone. Locked in her gaze, I stood there with my left arm ablaze in the pouring rain. Smoke danced off my silhouette like a ghostly ribbon and trailed off into the sky. She was twenty yards from the beach and even from that distance her features were intoxicating. She stood like a statue at the front of her surf board as it slowly cut through the black water. Her legs were long and tone, like an athlete. Her black bikini hugged her fit torso, exposing her stomach and tone arms. The menacing water barely touched her, only peppering her skin in soft delicate bursts. Her hair fell with dark beads of water trailing through her soft curls. The ocean was a beast now but her hair hardly moved, it cradled and shaped her shocked face. The flickering lightning revealed every line of her face and exposed her full lips pulled together in a serious pout. Her eyes were glowing blue and sparkling, like two jewels on fire. How could someone’s eyes burn so bright from so far away? It didn’t make any sense. As I stood burning on the beach, the sea became tiresome of our time bending interlude. It swelled up and began to rise behind her and I could feel time pulling at my body again, speeding back to normal. My flames disappeared as I looked back at the girl and the wall of water building behind her. She didn’t seem to notice the danger, even when the waves began to tilt the back of her board up and out of the water. She continued to stare at me with those angry eyes in some kind of quiet calmness. Thunder seemed to rattle the surf over and over again, shaking my bones in the process. I tried to scream to her but nothing came out of my mouth. The dark wave stood up behind her like a monster rising from his grave, covering her in an icy shadow. It hung there just long enough for her to snap back to reality and realize that she was in trouble. She broke off her stare just as the wave crashed down over her and buried her in darkness. Lightning split the sky with the force of an explosion, almost knocking me off of my feet. She was gone now and the sea quickly began to settle itself, satisfied with its latest meal.
EXCERPT: Max meets Sam
A knock at the front door startled me from my rambling thoughts. I quickly threw on my faded tee shirt and ran for the door. I had to jump over Oz, who had now stretched his little frame across the living room floor. Sleeping away, with his tongue sticking from the side of his mouth. My feet hit the floor with a dull thud. “Hang on,” I called out. As my hand found the door knob I gave Oz one last glance and saw that he hadn’t moved an inch. Heavy sleeper. I opened the door not ready for what was on the other side. I found myself face to face with an angel. Her hair was blonde with slight hints of red streaming through it, as the morning sun radiated from behind her petite frame. Her blonde locks fell almost half way down her back and a hint of her sweet shampoo filled my nose. She couldn’t have been much taller than 5’ 2” but she gave off a much larger radiance. She looked up at my eyes with a quiet confidence I had never seen before. She was smiling slightly with an inquisitive look in her eyes. They were jade green and reflected her golden locks inside of them. She was dressed in a white tank top that exposed a cluster of freckles that resided on her round shoulders. Her blue jeans were snug and her car keys dangled from her right pocket. They would jingle with every slight shift of her hips. She looked casual yet proper. She was beautiful. Not the drop dead, gorgeous supermodel beautiful, but the girl next door beautiful. “Aloha,” she said smiling. “I’m Sam. Are you ready?” I was lost. I tried my hardest to focus and say hello back, but I think the most I was capable of spitting out was... “Alo...” At which point I closed my eyes and hoped I was still dreaming away, safely in my bed. A gentle laugh came out of her lips as I cracked open my eyelid and dared to sneak another peek at her lightly freckled face before I decided to run and hide. My face felt hot with my burning embarrassment.
Max & Asia
“I was right…” “What do you mean Max?” she asked catching her breath. “You taste like rain.” I wanted to smile but forced myself not to. Her stare turned nervous. “Why would you say that?” “Because it’s true,” I smiled. “Max…I think this was a mistake.” She pulled away but didn’t let go of my hand. Her face grew sad. “You shouldn’t speak of such things.” “Why not?” I pushed. “You know my secret. You’ve seen my past…even felt them.” I stepped back toward her. “You’ve seen the real me Asia,” I said softly and she looked away from me but I pulled her face back to mine. “And I can see the real you.” Thunder rumbled loudly and I glanced upward toward her ceiling and laughed lightly. It rumbled with a force that seemed to push the ceiling down toward us.
Max & Sam
“Sam, that’s not what I meant.” It was no use; she was no longer paying any attention to my voice. She then pulled one final blanket out and snapped it in the crisp air while she shot me a wanting glare. This blanket was blue and much thinner than the others. She swiftly wrapped it around her barely five foot frame. She straightened her back and cocked her hips to the side as she removed her bikini top from underneath the blanket. She let the top drop to her side and she motioned with her finger for me to come join her. Steam flickered from my shoulders and I closed my mouth with my hand. I hadn’t even realized it was wide open until I could literally taste the beach air. She laughed sweetly at me and took a step forward. “Sam…are you crazy?” I asked bluntly with my mind racing. “I thought you were a bad boy?” she teased back. “And I thought you were a good girl…” I stuttered out.
Max & Devon
Devon and Brian approached slowly, staggering a little as they did and the twins mirrored their every move until all four of them were fanned out in front of Lucy and I. As they slowly circled us, I turned along with their movements, to shield Lucy as best I could. But now we were cut off from the beach, with our backs to the ocean. The air rushed off the waves quickly cooling my back and bringing Lucy to shivers. Her teeth chattered from below me. “You’re going to play the hero?” Devon taunted. “Or is the new kid just trying to make a name for himself?” “I already have a name,” I said as calmly as I could, which wasn’t very calm at all. My eyes were locked again with his and I couldn’t believe how much I wanted this to happen. “No. What you have is a big problem,” he screamed through the drenching rain. A small smile slipped onto my face. “Eddie…Alex…grab him,” he ordered. They looked at each other and back toward him with hesitation and his face twisted in anger. I stepped forward growing even hotter. “Bring it!” I demanded. Water flew from my mouth as I screamed and waved for them to do like they were told.
I read Ember by Madison Daniel in a matter of 24 hours, give or take. I absolutely loved it! It has love, passion, hate, anger, grief, you name it. This book has a little bit of everything! It didn’t take my long to get sucked into it. Wondering and anticipating what was going to happen next. I was on the edge of my seat. These excerpts, they don’t do the book justice. But if I added any more, there might be spoilers. There is just way more to it than what can be written here. You will have to read the book to find out more. You won’t regret it. There’s a huge OMG moment at the very end, and I will be picking up the next book in the series as soon as possible. I CAN’T WAIT to read what happens next!
How HOT was this book? Burning hot! I have been following Madison Daniel on his Facebook page for several months. He's an extremely active author who connects with his fans and seems super down to earth. His passion for music and the written word really got to me. After watching the book trailer (which I highly recommend you do) and seeing the reveal of Ember's cover I knew I wanted to get my hands on this book as quickly as possible. I read Ember in less than a week and encountered a few sleepless nights in the process. I can always tell that I like a book when I really don't want to see it end. That's how it was for me with Ember.
One of the coolest things about Ember is that it was written with it's own playlist that is meant to be listened to while you read the story. (I literally was just talking to my friend about how cool it would be to have a playlist attached to a book. So when I saw that this was done with Ember, I was like: Wow! Rock on!)
In Ember we follow Max Valentine (what a rocking cool name), a senior with a rough past and a burning hot secret. Max is sent to live in Hawaii with his Uncle after his father passes away. In Hawaii, Max finds himself the target of one very evil bully after he falls for the 'girl next door' Samantha Summers. (Another cool name might I add.) To make matters worse Max also develops complicated feelings for the mysterious, smoking hot, Asia Michaels. How is Max supposed to decide between one girl who could very well be his soul mate and another girl who ignites the fires within him? One things for sure, he can't have them both and he soon finds this out the hard way. Max's indecision ignites a flame so hot that no matter what, somebody is going to get hurt.
I know what you are thinking now, love triangle, it's SO been done before. Well this was not your normal love triangle! First, this has one guy and two girls, quite the opposite of what we see in most books. Second, this book had me actually routing for Asia one minute then for Sam the next. Normally I have a clear cut character who I route for. I couldn't find a way to be Team Asia or Team Sam in this book. Oddly enough, I wanted him to have both. Sick? Yes, but when you read it you will understand.
Also, I need to add that I usually don't read books where the main character is drawn from the male's point of view. I connect more with female characters, probably because I'm female, go figure. Anyhow, I kind of thought I wouldn't enjoy reading from the guy's point of view that much. I was pleasantly surprised! It was kind of fun to be inside a guys head and think like a guy does for a change.
I highly recommend Ember! (Obviously, since I gave it 5 stars.)
WARNING!!!: Ember has an explosive ending that leaves off to a great start for the next book in the series DOWNPOUR. Be for-warned that after reading this you will be tapping your fingers against the table and impatiently awaiting it's upcoming release. If you hate waiting for sequels to release (like me), then too bad! You still need to read this ASAP and just consider it a great way to practice your patience. :D
PS: This book is probably best for 16 and up as there are minor sexual references. (Nothing graphic by any means, which I was really thankful for! If you've read some of my other reviews, you know how I feel about graphic sex scenes in teen books, so I was really glad this didn't have that.) I LOVE that the language was kept clean (books so don't need all of that in there for them to be entertaining) and that underage drinking was frowned upon. Way to write Madison! :D
I liked it, I didn't like it. I loved Max, I hated Max. Ugh, this book had me going back and forth about on my feelings for the characters of this book. Everything I liked about this book I disliked too. The girls were strong and kick ass one minute and the next they were sniveling begging babies. Max made horrible choices and really just pissed me off over and over again to the point where I would groan and have to put the book down.
What I liked: I loved all of the music involved in Ember. Max and his band and all of the music that he listened too really helped give me something to connect with. Samantha was probably my favorite character even though she put up with so much crap from Max and all of his wishy washy ways. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Max, Samantha, and Asia and what and who they were.
What I didn't like: It was really hard to connect with these characters. Max wanted Sam one minute and Asia the next and both girls were willing to almost share him. Come on dude pick a girl and stick with her and girls don't let your man treat you like this! Asia, I really didn't like her very much at all! Her character was abrasive and stuck up and I really just... well... hated her.
Even though this wasn't my favorite book, it wasn't all bad. The writing is actually pretty good and the story wasn't half bad either.
Plot: A pretty original YA paranormal actually Characters: Inconsistent, weak, my least favorite part of the novel Writing: Entertaining, surprisingly mysterious (I'm not counting the editing mistakes here) Ending: Frustrating in the extreme Kid Friendly: There are some pretty sexy, super hot scenes Overall: This one just didn't do it for me, the characters annoyed me to the point that I had a hard time really getting into this one Should I Read This Book: If you are a lover of YA paranormal with lots of mystery, sexual tension, and love triangles you will probably like Ember
Max Valentine is 18 years old. He has become an orphan, and has come to live with his uncle in Maui. He is an unusual person, as he is able to generate and control fire from his fingertips. He meets a mysterious, blue eyed girl called Asia Michaels. He also meets his uncle's colleague's daughter, Samantha Summers. Just when he thinks his life couldn't get any more complicated, it does. He begins to have feelings for both girls. Can he make the right decision, or will his be heart broken?
Ember is the début novel by Madison Daniel. It is a fantastic tale of love, loss and heartbreak that took me on a thrilling ride! Max Valentine is an interesting character. He is only 18 years old, but he has been through so much. His family is almost all gone. His uncle Frank offers him the chance to stay with him on the island of Maui to finish off his education. Max loves music, and will play his guitar and sing when he has a chance. He also has a unique talent. He can create heat, and set himself on fire.
Madison Daniel has written a compelling story that tugged on my heart strings. I loved every moment of this story! Max's confusion and anguish is quite palpable as he tries to reconcile his feelings towards Asia and Samantha. Asia and Samantha are both interesting characters too; They are polar opposites. I think this is why Max loves them both. The interaction between the characters kept me hooked! As I came to the end of the book, I decided that Madison Daniel is an author to keep an eye on. I think if his next novel, Downpour, is as good as this one, then he has the biggest fan friend in me! I highly recommend this book if you love a fantastic YA story full of teenage angst with a paranormal twist!
After losing his father to a heart attack, he decides it's time to make a fresh start in Hawaii with his Uncle Frank. Where no one knows "Mad Max", about the accident that took his sister Mia, or his mother leaving. He hopes to finish his last year of high school with a clean slate.
On route to his new home, he's almost run over twice and picks up a stray dog - who tries to save Max and ends up hurt in the process. Using his new found gift, he saves the little wiener dog and has a new best friend in the process! This all sets in motion events that will throw his life into chaos!
This was an interesting read. Max, Sam and Asia have quite the love triangle - and then throw Devon and Lucy in the mix just to get things more complicated! Caught between two very different girls, Max isn't sure what he really wants. He doesn't want to hurt either of them - their hearts or with his gift. He is drawn to each of them in different ways.
Max is trying very hard to keep his temper and powers under control. But sometimes things just don't work out in his favor. Devon and his 'gang' are making things difficult for him.. but I won't get into too much detail with that - it'll spoil the story!
I loved how the author attaches songs to each chapter of the book, it was really unique and a lot of fun to see what songs he chose. There is a great play-list at the end of the book - I actually added a few of them to my own play-list!
All in all it was a great read, I'm looking forward to the next book to see what happens to Max, Sam, Asia, Kai and Marcus... This was a unique YA paranormal that fans of either genre will enjoy.
OMG this book is amazing. I MEAN AMAZING! I would pay the $4.99 or whatever I paid on Amazon to read it again. NO LIE! Author Madison Daniel is a pure genius! This book has just blown me away. I am so in love with the setting, the characters, the plot...it just all fits so well together. I read this book in less than 24 hours. I lost A LOT of sleep staying up late to read "one more chapter". Def a page turner.
What an incredible mix of legend and magic and love and hate. I am a HUGE fan of books from a male point of view and Max is the perfect main male character. His female interests Asia and Sam are amazing on their own. I could write forever about the 3 of them but NO SPOILERS! Trust me. READ THIS BOOK! It is amazing.
One aspect of this book that I really loved is even though it is paranormal, it is so true to teen life. The characters are high school seniors. There MAY be a hint at a sex scene that is very well written. It is actually beautifully written (if there is one that is *evil grins with no spoilers*). I would LOVE to see what Madison Daniel could do with a paranormal ADULT book. HONESTLY!!!!
OH MY GOODNESS! WOW! I just finished this book and I've already put Ember in a pile to read again! It was absolutely AMAZING! I cannot wait to read more in this wonderful series. The writing was fantastic and flowed very well. The story just wrapped it's tiny fingers around me and would not let go until I read the last page.
Max is a talented musician with a very unique ability that can be both useful and harmful. He moves to Maui to live with his Uncle after the death of his father. He is a sad young man with a very pain filled past, one that he cannot forgive himself for. He meets Asia on the beach shortly after his arrival. Asia is an angry young woman with secrets of her own. The two of them connect and calm one another. Then there is Sam, she is a friend of his Uncle's. Spending time with her brings a smile to Max's face and love to his heart. Is it possible to love two people at the same time?
