"Famously, instead of saying to the prostitute "I forgive you,' Jesus says "Your sins are forgiven." This suggests the experience that we are the grammatical but not the real subject of forgiveness; that forgiveness is itself a kind of passivity; the for-giver is also a receiver."

Cyril O'Regan's meditation on forgiveness in this volume has left me speechless.
