I've really liked all of Leena Lehtolainen's "Maria Kallio" mysteries set in Finland. This one was no exception, even if it is not technically a part of the series and Kallio makes only a few cameo appearances.
This time, we get the 1st person POV of the very nervous, but very determined "death assistant": Säde, a mousey, easily-overlooked, unattractive woman social worker with serious people pleasing problems who works in a Helsinki women's shelter called "Safe Harbour".
One day, Säde decides she's not going to take being a doormat anymore, stands up to her domineering male boss, disregards the rules of Safe Harbour and takes matters into her own hands -- namely by assisting the violent men who are abusing her clients 'over the edge' and out of their lives permanently.
And that's the only niggle, really. This abrupt change from doormat to avenging superhero isn't explained. Säde just says "ENOUGH!" and does a personality 180. It's only at the very end that she spills the beans about the real reasons, but at that point it's too much and too late. Keeping the big reveal (which isn't such a big reveal as it's hinted at quite often) on hold that long does more damage to character credibility than aid it.
Still! Good writing, great plot, great characters (both the good and problematic ones) and quite insightful as to the dynamics of domestic abuse and just how far one can go with helping others who don't have the foundations to help themselves anymore.

De Scandinavische landen worden nogal dikwijls voorgesteld als modelvoorbeelden van maatschappelijk welzijn en goed samenleven. Maar hun literatuur en filmografie schetsen een gans ander beeld. Alcoholisme, geweld, melancholie, triestheid, apathie, pessimisme en zwartgalligheid voeren heel dikwijls de boventoon.
Zo ook in dit werk.
Laat je niet misleiden door de voorstelling van het boek: Mario Kallio is geen "aantrekkelijke en succesvolle advocate" maar een politieinspecteur die allesbehalve het hoofdpersonage is; Säde bedenkt absoluut geen "gruwelijke therapie die tot snelle resultaten leidt", maar is een getormenteerde vrouw die eerder een speelbal van het lot dan wat anders is.
Slecht is het boek niet, en ja, het zou geloofwaardig kunnen zijn... alhoewel... Ook de "ontknoping" komt nogal heel onverwacht en geforceerd over.
Al bij al had dit thema - partnergeweld - een veel krachtiger en indringender boek kunnen opleveren. Nu ben ik eerder teleurgesteld.
Zo ook in dit werk.

Das war mal ein ganz anderer Krimi - aber toll !
Säde, eine junge Sozialarbeiterin in einem Frauenhaus, beschliesst zukünftig nicht mehr nett zu sein und den Frauen auf "ihre Art" zu helfen.
Die Charaktere sind ganz toll geschildert und entwickelt, man lebt und leidet auch mit.
Die Story ist toll aufgebaut und mit 286 Seiten hat das Buch die richtige Länge. Da wird nicht ausgeschweift, aber die Zeit, die man für die Story und die Charaktere braucht nimmt sich die Schriftstellerin .
Spannung kommt manchmal "ein bisschen" auf, aber darauf kommt es nicht an.
Der Schluss des Buches ist gut gelungen.
Es ist ein wirklich originelles Buch.
Eigentlich hatte ich vor 4 Sterne zu geben, aber während ich diese Zeilen schrieb, bin ich dann doch zu den 5 Sternen übergegangen - es gab einfach nichts auszusetzen und war beste Unterhaltung, die auch hin und wieder zum Nachdenken anregt.

This book caught me when I saw the cover and read the back side.
It is a WOW-book. Almost brought me to tears at the end. That doesn't happen too often, so it was kind of a surprise.
I will not tell all of its contents, because that would spoil the read for those who still want to read it.
But... it is the story-of-life of a young woman who works in a shelter home for abused (battered) women. After several years of listening to these women, trying to help them mostly without any result, she thinks of a new kind of therapy.
She carries around a big secret, that is only revealed in the end and that gives a turn to the story (the one that nearly made me cry).
For all those who love crime stories with more contents: DO READ!

Dieses Buch hat rein zufällig zu mir gefunden und machte mich vor allem wegen des wichtigen Themas der häuslichen Gewalt neugierig. Eine unscheinbare Frau, die in einem Frauenhaus Opfern von Gewalttaten hilft, und um zu helfen schließlich selbst zur Mörderin wird.. Ich mochte den typisch nordischen Schreibstil dieses Werkes, es liest sich sehr gut und daher waren die knapp 300 Seiten nach nur einem Tag auch schon wieder ausgelesen. Allerdings fand ich viele der Wendungen nicht überraschend, sondern recht vorhersehbar. Ebenso waren mir die Charaktere zum Teil zu überzeichnet. Deswegen bin ich insgesamt wohl nicht ganz so begeistert wie manch anderer. Ein gutes Buch ist es dennoch.

Maria Kallio kommt hier nur am Rand vor. Gegen die anderen Krimis mit ihr, ist dieser hier sehr viel näher an der Protagonistin dran, finde ich. Als Leserin kann ich hier sehr deutlich mitspüren, wie es ihr geht, bei der Kallio ist das oft ein wenig distanziert, obwohl auch das von Krimi zu Krimi besser wird.

Ein Krimi, der eigentlich kein Krimi ist - trotz der Toten und der Spannung. Das Buch ist vor allem deshalb lesenswert, weil die Charaktere toll und spannend entwickelt sind

selten lese ich Krimis, ich fand es jetzt auch nicht krimimäßig spannend, aber unterhaltend. Zwischendurch kurz immer mal zäh, allgemein ist es oft bisschen vorhersehbar, die Charaktere sind jetzt auch nicht so tief. Aber das ist auch nicht so schlimm, es trägt sich trotzdem gut durch und ich mochte die Grundstory der Sozialtherapeutin im Frauenhaus, die die gewaltvollen Männer der schutzsuchenden Frauen ermordet. Der Plottwist am Ende hat schon nochmal Dinge erklärt, aber irgendwie war er auch random? Zusammenfassend merke ich, dass ich zu vielen Punkten ja und nein gleichzeitig denke

Another Finnish crime novel of an apparently popular crime author that has not been published in English (and neither has the author).
The website of Leena Lehtolainen touts her to be the Finnish female version of Henning Mankell, so how come her books have not been published in English?
Lehtolainen has an apparently famous detective in her series, Maria Kallio. While she's mentioned in this book, this story is not about or around her really.
In this story (the first of her books I've ever read, since her books were not around when I lived in the North) there is a very nicely behaving, mousey looking social therapist Säde Vasara, who's, well, always nice. But when one of the usual customers of the safe house she works for is found killed, something changes slowly. What if she had done something differently? What if they would have insisted the women beaten by their husbands would denounce their husband's actions? What if...
Säde decides to actually do something about it.
The book isn't available in English, but if it was, I'd give it the title of "The Man With a Dragon Tattoo", since there is a man with a green dragon tattoo in it (the book was first published in 1999, before Larsson's trilogy). Since the original title would not work (tappava = killing, Säde = the name of the protagonist, but also means ray.).

Auch wenn die Geschichte nicht immer wirklich spannend ist: unbedingt fertig lesen und nicht vorblättern! Die letzten Kapitel sind ziemlich überraschend und aufklärend.
Wäre der Gesamtinhalt etwas spannender gestaltet, hätte der Krimi eine bessere Bewertung erhalten.
