A widowed mountain girl copes with running her farm, getting another husband, and having children. Above all she strives to protect her mountain from land speculators. His hat was pulled low over his black hair and his shirt sleeves were rolled up almost to his elbows. His hands appeared strong and in control as he held the reins of his high stepping horse. He looked a little thinner than he used to be and a lot more tired. “What’s wrong?” he asked me fast. “You’ve got to go back to Banners Elk,” I told him, forgetting about supper. His eyes widened with concern. “Should you ride? I can deliver the baby here.” “It’s not the baby, it’s the preacher. You’ve got to bring him back here.” “The preacher?” “I want us to get married right now.” Jonas was completely silent for a full two minutes. His blue eyes were looking at my face as though there were written words for him to read.“All right,” he finally said as though he had made a difficult decision. “I can do that, but it would be faster if I put you in front of me and we went to the preacher’s house together.”
Peggy grew up on small farm in the Appalachians near Jefferson, NC; married young; finished school; made handcrafted folk toys; established her own farm on Grandfather Mountain near Boone; raised six children in a single-wide while growing burley tobacco, Christmas trees, and small fruits; built a house; raised small animals – all – while helping her husband do land surveying. Still farming, she enjoys her grand and great-grandchildren while creating novels sprinkled with the flavor of her mountain heritage. Since 2003 she has been writing about three books a year.
There's two days worth of dirty dishes in my kitchen sink because I've been busy readi And there's two baskets of clean laundry waiting to be folded because I was too busy reading this book. But no,I didn't really like it because it ended too soon. I have become captivated by these characters and their stories. The story moves along at a good pace and leaves you wanting more which is a good thing because there's a lot .more to come.
Just another well written book about Laine and her adventures. Add in her psycho Mom and local psycho Hazel, some rattlesnakes, hellfire and damnation... and wow! I read this sequel straight through! The only thing that could have made this better was someone delivering me dinner... it's rough living in the rural country! #TeamJonas #TeamAndy #TeamRupert #TeamBettingGeezers There are so nasty characters along with good people. #PickThisBook #ReadThisSeries
I loved the first book, but now she's getting on my nerves. I have to keep reminding myself of all the things she's lived through and how young she is. But she's ornery, impulsive, obsessive, and hard-headed. Let´s see how she does in book three. Also, what about the women in these books? Is Laine the only "good" woman? Why do all the other women have to be horrible, deranged people? I´m hoping that changes in book 3 as well. We´ll see.
Awesome awesome awesome best describes this book the series and the writer. Action drama evil doings conspiracies hatred threats and a love for land at all cost. It’s unreal the things that happened in this book you don’t know to laugh or cry. On edge all the time. What’s going to happen next. Unbelievable exciting and traumatic heartbreakingly love and hatred.

I've just finished this novel, the second of five in the Laine's Beech Mountain series, and I can't wait to get on to reading the next one. I highly recommend this author to anyone who loves stories set in the South.
I am really enjoying this Appalachian Mountain series! I can relate to Laine and some of the other characters in the story and delight in the mountain, farmland and small country town setting.
