Trying to come to terms with the passing of her husband, a famous and controversial artist in Calgary, Aimee Westerberg is spiralling into depression instead. Her identity as Georges Westerberg's younger second wife leads to a fight with his family over his estate. Aimee attempts to hide from it all in her work as an art-restorer at the Glenbow museum, only to find herself pursued by journalist, Bear Cardinal, who is writing an exposé on her late husband. As Aimee tries to piece together the true character of her late husband, her fragmented memories come into contrast with a phantom version of him which materializes, and seems intent on preventing her from getting on with her life. Unable to mourn while tormented by a poltergeist, Aimee needs to figure out how to un-tether herself from the past, and escape forces from beyond.

I've loved Danika's work for years, from her YA books to her Waterton series. Inescapable is so different from them all and I loved it. This book is a true ghost story and it takes you on a wild ride.

Aimee is a complex character. She married an older man (Georges) and at the beginning of the book he passes. This is the start of a painful and tumultuous year for Aimee. The ghost that's haunting her the most over that year is her late husband, a well known Canadian painter who left his wife and life in a mess. Another aspect of this story is Bear Cardinal, a journalist who is writing a book about Georges' life. Him writing this book, opens the flood gates into Aimee's life both then and now.

Throughout the book you get glimpses into Aimee's life, how she met Georges, eventually married him, and the life they lived. Without spoiling anything, the flashbacks to their life together are really telling with who the person Aimee is in present day. An artist in her own right, after Georges passing she's able to truly find her inspiration again and possibly so much more.

With Inescapable, her first “ghost” story, Danika Stone proves once again that she’s got the goods. From the first to the last page, her recently widowed protagonist, Aimee Westerberg, holds your attention with her often painful, sometimes funny quest to make sense of her late marriage. It doesn’t help that the ghost of her late husband, a famous Canadian artist who denigrated Aimee’s artistic talent, wants to retain the control he exercised over her in life. With his death, there’s a fresh chance for Aimee to regain her confidence as an artist. There’s also a possible new love on the horizon. The journey to get there is another page turner from one of our best storytellers.

Three things I never thought I’d say at once about a book encapsulate Danika Stone’s Inescapable: Smart, Sexy and Spooky.

As the main character negotiates grief and loss, self discovery and new love, she faces off with an otherworldly, inescapable foe that threatens everything.

It’s a thriller that draws you in with the promise of ghosts and delivers in ways you may not expect. Without spoiling the story, all I’ll say is I found myself eager to find out which ghost was coming next. As an added bonus I learned some cool stuff about art restoration.

Inescapably good.

Aimee cannot escape the weight of her marriage.

Aimee cannot escape ‘help’ with her restorations.

Aimee cannot escape a new man coming into her life.

Aimee cannot escape George. She begged him to stay, and now he just.won’t.go.

This story draws you in slowly and gently, almost making you wonder if it’s a thriller at all....

...then hang on for the ride.

Danika is a automatic buy for me, whether she's writing a murder mystery, YA, whatever.

Thank you to Danika for the early review copy!

Danika Stone has written another fantastic work of art. Inescapable is a beautifully haunting portrayal of grief, loss, and the memories we cling to that allow us to heal. It’s the story of resiliency, loss, and overcoming the constant reminders of grief of losing someone so close to you. Haunting your memories, your life in every way, and your need to “hold on” to them.

“The pain is the ocean, and you learn to swim it or you go down in your own grief and drown."

You can’t escape the grief, the grief itself is inescapable.

One word for this book... CHILLING.

Wow wow wow! I just finished Inescapable! I adore Danika’s writing so much. It’s just flows and it’s so easy to see. Chapter Nine blew me away. The moving between the stories but never missing a beat. My heart was racing, I was yelling, I was crying, I was smiling and laughing. Phew. What a great book!

I really enjoyed the uniqueness of how this ghost story was told. I am definitely someone who struggles with grief and trying to live my life with the pain of it so I found myself relating to the main character a lot. I really enjoyed this book a lot. It has become a favourite.

All I can say is - WOW! I was caught up in the whirlwind of this story from the first page. I couldn't put it down. The characters were perfect and flawed and very real. Even the shadowy ones - maybe especially the shadowy ones.

This book made me scream in ways All The Feels and Switchback and its respective series did. I adore Danika so much as an author, and as always, she knocked it out of the park.
