This is a brilliant collection of short stories that is fresh, imaginative and quite comical at times. It takes the reader around the world with scenarios in Israel, Italy, Japan, and many other locales. A fantastic read. Gratifying and very entertaining.
Imaginative and whimsical, Nicholas K. F. Matte's "Short Stories" is a collection of brief, interesting stories that take readers into scenarios from around the world.
With fifteen distinct stories, Matte shared a multitude of characters from different backgrounds, meeting each other through travels, concerts, and fun adventures. Abbas and Aaron, in the first story, converse about the latest bomb blast that killed four people while they are traveling on the bus when suddenly an elderly woman cries "rayie" at the back of the seat, which makes them burst into laughter. Matte sporadically punctuates humor in his storytelling, making the book comical at times.
Elsewhere, Matte creates fictionalized history, where characters speak in multilingual dialogue, displaying war scenes. Other times, he delivers the story with the love of music, as with Django Reinhardt, who embraced music not just as a job but as a way of life. This specific story testifies that passion creates inner joy that spreads to his audience, making a positive impact.
Speaking spanish in a humoristic tone, classical guitarist Giovanni Lotti satisfied his worldwide fans by performing well in his concerts and serving them with autographs while they praised his talent. This is one of my favorite stories in the book, aside from Akio's newly found love.
Poems about introspection, hunting, companionship, love, and nature enliven the book further. Indeed, the book is a vivacious undertaking for another level of reading experience. A must-read for lovers of brief stories and poems, "Short Stories" brims with amusing scenes of different events and adventures. Surprised by Matte's writing skills, I'm excited to read the rest of his books!
