Denny Williams was a nurse. Growing up she wanted adventure her life and she joined the Army and after a few years volunteered to go to the Philippines. A fun explanation of what life there was like before WWII as she meets a man she falls in love with, marries, they honeymoon (including a trip to Tokyo) and she gets out of the army (married women could not serve as nurses on active duty at that time). Her husband worked for an oil company and they traveled around the islands sometimes as part of his work.
Then came the war, Denny re-joined the Army nurses to assist as the Japanese attack and casualties mount. She moved from hospital to field hospital, and finally joined the final stand on Corregidor as the beleaguered American/Philippine army held on month after month under near constant attack. During one time period Denny says two doctors she worked for performed over 400 surgeries in one day treating the wounded. After the capture and surrender of American forces the nurses were interred in a camp for the years waiting out the war.
Denny Williams does a great job telling her story with snippets of events and descriptions of places and people she worked with. It's a fairly easy read and you will find yourself rooting for Denny to live and re-join her husband at the end of it all.
