L. Ron Hubbard is universally acclaimed as the single most influential author and humanitarian of this modern age. His definitive works on the mind and spirit—comprising over 350 million copies in circulation and more than 40 international bestsellers—have resulted in a legacy benefiting millions and a movement spanning all cultures.
Hurricane was originally published in the March, 1936 issue of Five-Novels Monthly, a periodical that could arguably be considered Hubbard's best pulp market. It's a tight little adventure story of crime and revenge on the high seas, and while the secondary characters aren't as fully developed here as they are in many of his works, it's still an interesting and engaging thriller.
I have just recently started getting back into hubbards books. He was an author that my dad used to read and I just read Hurricane. I was pretty good. He draws you into this world of pul fiction so effortlessly and you hate to love him for it. Cpt Spar wants Revenge and he sets out to get it. Is it so easy of course not. He is rough and tough but so real. The plots twists came fast and hard which can get a bit overwhelming but they are intwined nicely. I am glad I got back into these books and can't wait to read more. ** I received this product at a discount to try in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Captain Spar wants just one thing in life: revenge. But just as he is on the brink of exacting that revenge, he becomes tangled up in a complicated ransom plot that he doesn’t even know the half of. After a daring sea voyage through stormy waters, he reaches Hurricane Hill, a spot usually avoided at all costs by sailors, but it is then that he discovers that his troubles are only beginning.
During the 1930’s and 40’s, the pulp fiction era, L Ron Hubbard wrote hundreds of short stories covering almost every genre you can think of, and published them in the various periodicals of the day. Now Galaxy Audio is bringing those stories to life in exciting and dramatic audio featuring music, sound effects, and a talented cast of actors.
The cast of Hurricane includes Josh Robert Thompson, Jim Meskimen, Thomas Silcott, Corey Burton, Christina Huntington, and R F Daley. If you’ve been around the audiobook block a time or two then you’ll probably recognize some of these names. If you don’t recognize them then let me tell you up front that these are talented voice actors. If you like them, and I know you will, you can find them in many of the Golden Age Stories being produced by Galaxy Audio.
This audiobook performance is superb and the story line classic and well written.
I tend to compare it to the movie by Howard Hawks of Hemingway's novel To Have and To Have Not with the bits on avoiding Devil's Island and acts of old classic story heroism.
I enjoyed both a lot but have to tip my hat and give the nod to Hurricane even if Bogey and Becall aren't starring. The edgy characters and story seems more effective in Hurricane and the sound effects of the storm are truly realistic.
The arch-villain goes by the name "The Saint" and the suspense in hoping that that character gets what he really deserves keeps you going till the end. He is damn slippery and conniving.
A quote from Ellery Queen on the jacket:
"One of the great pulp writers, with colorful prose, lively action writing, exotic locales, fresh variations on standard characters and situations and well-constructed plots."
Despite an ending that is a little too tidy, this is a fun read from the prolific L. Ron Hubbard. The author's ability to cross genres seemingly at will is astonishing.
A story about the wrongly accused Captain Spar who manages to get into trouble while escaping from the imprisonment. Cheesy, it gave me the feeling of a b-movie.
