Confessions of Super Mom

Rate this book
“Every superhero has an Origin. To tell the truth, it's a little embarrassing. I wasn't put into a rocket and sent to Earth by my parents just as my home planet exploded. I wasn't given a special ring by visiting aliens. I wasn't bitten by a radioactive spider. No, it wasn't anything nearly so glamorous; my beginnings are quite humble. I was merely the innocent victim of a Horrible Swiffer Accident.”

Meet Birdie Lee, clerk at Marvel Fine Food and Beverages and an average, middle-aged single mother of two teenagers. Until one ordinary morning when, on the floor of her bathroom, Birdie discovers a Stain of Unknown Origin—a stain so intense that nothing can remove it. When all her attempts fail, Birdie does the unthinkable: She loads her Swiffer with every cleanser she owns, aims, and shoots. Suddenly, Birdie becomes endowed with extraordinary powers. Now Birdie must somehow balance it all—her smug ex and his overachieving new wife; two teenagers and a string of PTA meetings; her own budding romance; and her beloved town of Astro Park, whose very existence is threatened by a mysterious force sneaking its way into every household. A delightful, well-earned escape, Confessions of Super Mom is an amusing vindication of the overlooked everyday heroism that is a woman's life.

—Meg Cabot, author of the Princess Diaries and Every Boy's Got One

Melanie Lynne Hauser also writes historical fiction under the pen name Melanie Benajamin.

Hailing from the Hoosier state (where she grew up in the shadow of the Indianapolis 500 racetrack), Melanie Lynne Hauser is a late bloomer who is just now figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up. Having tried her hand at telemarketing, candy striping for a nursing home (where it was suggested she not return, after she mistook the men's plastic urinals for water bottles and put ice in them) and acting under her maiden name, Melanie Miller (Most Academy Award-Worthy Performance: The title role, complete with bear costume, in the gut-wrenching exploration of good touch/bad touch entitled "What's the Matter, Little Bear?"), she put everything on hold in order to marry, have two children, and spend her time making sure they didn't stick their fingers in electrical sockets. (Both the husband, and the children.)

However, the children grew up. At an age when many women throw themselves back into their careers after raising their children, Melanie looked around and realized she never had one in the first place. After deciding she had no real marketable skills, she turned to the one thing she did know: Books. A bookworm from the time she was able to form words, Melanie realized that what she really wanted to do was write books. So she wrote one. It stank. She buried it in her backyard, next to the compost heap. She wrote another book. It didn't stink quite so much; in fact it got her not one, but two literary agents. Still, nobody wanted to publish it. She wrote another book. It stank the least of all, and led her to her current, wonderful literary agent, but still it went unpublished. Then she wrote CONFESSIONS OF SUPER MOM. So far, nobody has said that it stinks. In fact, so many people liked it that the sequel, SUPER MOM SAVES THE WORLD was also published. She has also contributed an essay to the anthology, IT'S A BOY! (Women Writers on Raising Sons. And finally, at long last, Melanie has a career. (And old men in nursing homes everywhere breathe a huge sigh of relief.)

I picked this book up on an impulse which rarely works out for me. This time it did! This is a unique, well-written story about a single mom with teenagers. Oh, and she happens to have superpowers. The superhero angle provides much fun and laughter, and totally complements the heart-warming story.

If you are tired of the "same old, same old", pick up this book! A sequel just came out, it's at the top of my TBR pile.

My wife kept me awake nights by laughing as she read this in bed so I had to read it even though I'm a guy. I have to say that is was funny and well written...I recommend it for mom AND dads.

This was a fun book to read, especially since I really like superheroes. It was a quick read and included a light love story. Anyone who feels like a Super-mom should read this book.

Ever since her divorce, Birdie Lee has been trying to do it all. She is a grocery-store cashier who does her best to be a good mom to teenagers Martin, a lovable geek, and Kelly, who finds her mother terribly embarrassing. One morning, after the kids have gone to school, Birdie goes after a stubborn stain in the bathroom. An ill-advised mixture of all the cleaning products in the house knocks her out cold; on waking, Birdie possesses miraculous cleaning powers and an uncanny ability to anticipate when children are in danger. After her initial shock, Birdie revels in her newfound power and sets about protecting kids everywhere. Meanwhile, she realizes that the company behind the popular Patriot Pops cereal, New Cosmos Industries, run by self-made millionaires Lex and Patty Osborne, is not quite the innocent, all-American, family-values operation it purports to be. Super Mom has found her archnemesis.

This was a fun read. A little hard to imagine, but something enjoyable. What mom doesn't want to save their kids (and all kids) from evil?

Who hasn't made the "moms are superheroes" analogy? Because absolutely, we are.

And as much as I'd like to be able to clean up spills in a single bound, this book wasn't as clever as it should've been.

Plus, the leaking/squirting references really skeeved me out.

The Jacket Cover is cute and that is what attracted me to the book, but if it weren't for that...I wouldn't have picked it up.

As it was, the Mom was fairly pathetic so becoming 'super' helped somewhat. The book was silly and foolish and strains the imagination, but those are probably all good qualities for a book. This is not a children's book, however, and has some profanity and errant sex in it. Not much but enough I thought to not recommend it to younger readers.

As it was, I enjoyed the book and would be interested in whatever else the author may have written.

After a cleaning accident single mother of two teenagers becomes infused with superpowers...very unique superpowers. Her powers seem to stem from her core being which is being a mother. With her abilities, she learns about a scam that is directed to hurt children and make an evil corporation money.

Confessions of supermom is a very uniquely written book. It is a quick and fun read. As I was reading it I could see it as a movie. In fact, I pictured Drew Barrymore as Supermom, Birdie. She’s cute, she’s strong and loveable.

Some of Birdie’s story is a little cheesy...but I like cheese. The more cheese the better for me.

I think this series deserves more reads. Many of you may not know that historical fiction author Melanie Benjamin is the same author who wrote this supermom series. The similarities are that she writes people and stories that are so real and hard to believe that she is writing fiction. The sequel to this is sitting on my shelf waiting to be read

What an unexpected delight! This is the kind of book you recall cute parts from out of the blue months later. It is funny and warm and witty...a great read when you want a book that makes you read with a grin on your face.

The title caught my eye at the library and I picked it up without thinking too much. What a funny, quick read! I love all the little referances to Superheroes throughout the book...

I tried to give this more than one star, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I grabbed this book at a thrift store for a dollar, mostly because it had a fun cover (thanks #bookstagram) and it looked like it might be a fun read. Unfortunately, it wasn't.

It could have been. It had a lot of potential. But for some reason that I'm not sure I can quite put my finger on, I found it totally unenjoyable.

The writing was *almost* good, but it wasn't. For a debut novel it wasn't bad, but just that slight amount of off-ness was enough to grate on my nerves.

The plot was cheesy, but I don't have any complaints about that. I mean, the story is about a mom who, while trying to remove a stain, has a chemical-mixing mishap that gives her superpowers, so I knew what I was getting into. There were obvious attempts at pulling in the superhero theme (main character's last name is Lee, the archnemesis's name is Lex, etc.), but I really didn't mind that aspect of it.

The problem was that this was supposed to be funny, and I didn't laugh. Not a single time. Now granted, I am the woman that literally LOL'ed multiple times recently while reading Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, so I realize my sense of humor might be slightly different than a, ahem, *normal* person's, but still.

Another irritating thing is that for a superhero, particularly one who is a superMOM, our main character is not a very good role model. She doesn't set a good example for her children, and (in my opinion) even has questionable parenting skills at times. She sneaks out and lies to her kids, and not just about being a superhero.

So overall this book would have been a disappointment if I had been expecting much out of it, but I didn't really have any expectations, so whatever.

This book was really cheesy but it was definitely different/unique. I think it would be good if you are a mom that feels underappreciated and who also loves superheroes. However, I personally would hate for my superpower to be cleaning really well though......LOL!

I really wanted to like this book but I just didn’t. I would reach for it read a chapter and get bored. I did read 7 very long chapters but I still want to find out so I am fast forwarding to the last two chapters a to find out the end.

Confessions of A Super Mom is the story of a divorced mother who gains distinctly parental superpowers after a cleaning accident. The story is fun and upbeat, with a lot of honestly and warmth. I liked that Birdie's pre-teen son became her confidant--believable or not, it was adorable. Her crime-fighting style was motherly in a way that was funny but also compassionate, something we need to see more of. The story could have been paced a little better; at times it felt a bit slow. It might not have been "action-packed" in the usual superhero sense. But the superhero genre is flexible, inclusive of many other subgenres. It's only fitting that it include the lives of parents, the real superheroes of the world.

After an overdose of Austen derivatives and English country house mysteries, I was looking to read something that was closer to my lived experience as a suburban mom, and this looked promising. The premise was fresh--how can an ordinary divorced mother and mild-mannered supermarket clerk turn into a superhero with strange chemically enhanced powers? I enjoyed the way the author melded the conventions of the superhero biography with the realities of being a mom. There were many funny moments and the relationships between Birdie and her kids were very true to life--I think that was the heart and the strongest part of the story, the problem of how the kids were going to adapt to the changes in her life. That and her relationship with her BFF.. The overall plot was rather cartoonish (particularly the villains and their Evil Plan), but it was true to the conventions of superheroes--lightheardedness and justice triumph in the end. By the end I wished that I too could have the dual superpowers of cleaning and the withering motherly glance that compels all to stop their nonsense and buckle their seatbelts.

A fun story that is just a bit "out there". It's not fantasy or even science fiction but it is fun if you're willing to suspend reality for a bit. How many women have worried, when they go to clean, that mixing some of those cleaning chemicals could lead to a disaster - people have been know to die from certain combinations! Well that didn't happen to Birdie Lee but what did leads to an entertaining story that had bits of real life woven in between the parts that were fantastic. Light fun, great break from household drudgery. I was surprised to have enjoyed it at all - I'm not usually a chic lit - or mom lit type. I like my mysteries, thrillers and suspense and I'm a bit old for the word "chic" but it was fun to look into (or back to) that world and appreciate the story as entertainment.

This book is the perfect antidote to a bad mood. It's funny and charming, a little cheesy, a little cliche, but it does so with such a good heart, it's impossible not to smile while reading it. It still manages to produce a pretty clear critical message about big corporations and small town America, which I totally agree with, giving the book substance beneath the cotton candy fluff. I thouroughly enjoyed it and its' little jokes(see JLA references and a little Superman cameo haha). It's a good book to read on a rainy day or if you are feeling underappreciated or if you just can't deal with the Stain of Unknown Origins on the bathroom floor right now. It's guaranteed to leave you chuckling to yourself and thinking whether you should make a cape out of dishtowels.

Birdie Lee is a single mom of two teenagers.. until one day she happens to put all of the cleaners into her Swiffer and then gets knocked out due to all the chemicals! And when she wakes up - she has special powers!
I started out really liking this book, because of the sci-fi-ness to it, and I'm not a Sci-Fi Reader. I like the idea of a mom as a superhero because I do think mom's are superheroes everyday. But then I felt like Birdie, aka Supermom, was really too much of a pushover and really passive-aggressive, maybe that's the typical Superhero story.. but I just didn't like that part about her.
I do have to say it's a really fast read, especially if you get over that part of doormat/housewife/divorcee who gets pushed around by her 2 teenagers, PTA members, and ex-husband.

I've never read anything by this author before and was very pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was drawn into the story and the character's personalities and lives. I thought the arrival of a membership packet from the Justice League of America was entertaining and I'll be curious if Wonder Woman makes her presence known as Super Mom's assigned mentor / trainer in the next book. For some reason, I had a hard time picturing Birdie in my mind's eye as I read the book. She is described as being in her early 40's with two teenagers but I kept envisioning a grandmother. I think her name conjures up that image.

A quick and enjoyable read for anyone, Super Mom, or mortal.

Birdie Lee is a normal mom until a Swiffer accident gives her superpowers and transforms her into Super Mom. Now she must keep her secret identity, take down the supervillian, and get the guy.

This is a fun book with a refreshing take on the superhero genre. However, Birdie herself is an emotional mess that has no self-esteem and continually gets walked on. She inspires pity--not a good trait for a protagonist.

this book was super funny no pun intended! i love how the author captured the relationship between parents and teens and how people can be cruel. but the best relationships dont let the bumps destroy them. i was laughing at points so hard i was crying and that is a difficult thing for me to do when im reading i would totally recommend this book to people and im going to recommend it to my mother when she gets home. its a perfect pick me up

I picked this book up from my library on a whim, and at first I was sure it wasn't going to be much more than a laugh. As I read, I found myself enthralled with the story, intrigued by the plot, and falling in love with the characters, especially Birdie - though it certainly was very humorous.

This book is a quick, fun read not only about becoming a superhero via chemical fumes, but also about learning that there is a little superhero in all of us, especially if you're a mother.

Actually, I didn't even finish reading this book, it was that much a waste of my time. The idea is just silly, and really, it's a story that someone in JR High would write. I don't know why I thought this would be good, I liked the idea more than the reality I guess.

I really enjoyed the author's writing style, and some parts made me laugh, but the story was just not one of my favorites. I know it was never intended to be a realistic story but I think I'd like to read a more believable story by this author.

Reads like a Disney movie but has a few funny moments. Divorced mom of two overuses cleaning products in an unventilated space and develops superhero powers. Just as believable as vampire and mystical realism stories.
