The paranormal world is in chaos. The elders are tired of their younger people playing the field, causing trouble, and fighting with each other. Everyone who attends the UPAC Conference now has twenty-four hours to claim a mate of a different species. If they don't, they will never have a mate. The spell is cast. There is no escaping the Midnight Matings. Software developer Gavin Ashby is perfectly happy with his life. He finds other people annoying after being around them for only a short period of time, and having a mate sounds like pure torture to him. Video game tester Ant Marino is satisfied with his quiet, solitary life. After being accosted and almost forcibly mated, he meets the aloof but handsome Gavin. Neither Ant nor Gavin are prepared for the feelings that arise. Will the two men continue to dance around each other or will they pounce on love and never let it go?
[Siren Classic ManLove: Erotic Alternative Paranormal Romance, M/M, shape-shifters, sex toys]
I hated Gavin, he was a mean jerk and excusing it with not having great social skills and having an asshat father just doesn't cut it for me. I guess the premise of the elders forcing mating or death for all species was interesting, although making them take a mate in 24 hours that will literally last hundreds of years of immortality seems very extreme. Gavin did improve his treatment of Ant during the story, but it just wasn't enough for me to get over the guy he was at the beginning of the story.
I really enjoyed most of this book but there were a couple of things I just had to disregard to make it work for me. (I didn't have a problem with the multiple character first person POV but others might.) But some good things first: I liked the minor story plots, that the characters were willing to contact authorities to help with issues, that there was past abuse and trauma. I hate birthright which happens too often with shifters, but I like how in this book it doesn't mean that the person is fit to lead. (That's not unique but less common then the opposite). I could have used more danger and mayhem but there was some and that was good.
The premise is ridiculous and could never work. What if there were an odd number of people of whatever orientation, like 17 gay guys, or those who were in menage relationships? One if one person isn't likeable and/or attractive and no one wants to mate with them? No one would mate with me when they hadn't known me even a day. Or whate if there were too many of one species like if 12 of those 17 gay guys were vampires? People would lost the most important part of who they were because they couldn't find a partner right there? What if they were close to mating someone who wasn't at the conference or who was their same species? Maybe they were planning to announce their mating the next day. They would lose their abilities like a vampire couldn't drink blood which would kill her or a shifter couldn't shift which would make him go feral and have to be killed.
The even dumber rule is that . Seriously? What if one had a business trip and the other had to work? What if both had food poisoning, particularly problematic with a gay couple? ( Or one was arrested, perhaps for something he didn't commit? Or if he were grieving for a dead loved one, or just taking a nap and sleeping too long? Or one was kidnapped or otherwise missing? What if one just refused? The other would have the same consequence regardless of willingness. Or a woman was giving birth or menstruating (something people often can't deal with when having sex). Or simply can't get it up? They have to do this for four years or they'll die just like above. Seems a bit extreme and unnecessarily often. The consequences shouldn't be death and the time between should be less frequent.
After a couple has mated at this thing but haven't registered yet, Plus, Gavin has to carry Ant who's most at risk. Why didn't Ant just turn into his animal which would be much easier to carry. I did totally love that Ant was a .
For the first half Gavin is a total jerk. I understand the desire to make a character who grows throughout the book, but his way of thinking, even when he's "being nice" is appalling. He's really domineering, which again I understnad for a lion shifter but it's really annoying.
It's great that they're not really young. I love that the age gap is and that comment on it. It reminds me of another M/M book I can't remember the name of where one of the MCs is and the other is . And they are actually concerned about it. You'd think when you get to a certain point that kind of age gap is a nonissue.
Connor completely overreacts about Ant not telling him everything. He kept something even bigger from Ant! They'd only known each other a few hours. How could they have told each other everything? .
The lack of technical knowledge was so bad it made me laugh: One of the MCs looks over at code ther other is working on and says, "You might want to restructure your interface," to which the other replies, "Thanks," with a smile. The interface? The thing that can take months to design and test? And figuring that out by glancing at the code? The response would be more like, "you fucking asshole!" (Hmm, interesting epithet now that I think about it.) or, "You can restructure my interface anytime," with a leer.
The biggest issue for me is that there is NO excuse for what Gavin did. NONE. (major spoiler) Despicable. Then Ant says "What you did wasn't that big of a deal if Say what? It was unacceptable any way you look at it! and that Ant started trusting him very soon after? Hell no. For this alone I should have given the book one star.
But there were some really great things that are not common in shifter books. The women a strong and plentiful. They even acknowledge that in the wild the female lions do all the hunting. In the book, the lionesses are the enforcers! "Lionesses were known as the enforcers of a pride. Even in the wild they were the ones who hunted, tended to the cubs, and ketp the pride in line." Is that cool or what? This lack of acknowledgement in other books containing lion shifters has always bothered me. In Africa, the lion kill that I saw was by females. I even saw them playing with their food, slowly killing it and listening to its screams of pain. I was there for twenty minutes and they already had been laying there for a while.
I do think the thing with was way underutilized and that the ending was too pat. But I liked most of the story enough to keep reading in the series. I only hope that the other writers keep the good things. This series is written by three people, the other two being Stormy Glenn and Gabrielle Evans, neither of whom are known for strong female characters or equal mates.
One star for the problems. Three and a half stars for the rest of it. So 2.25 stars.
Honestly I only read this to get to the next two. And trust me no one was as surprised as me but I actually really enjoyed this one. A few editing mistakes but much fewer than the other Joyee books I have read.
It was a simple story but enjoyable and entertaining. I liked the world Joyee set up and now hope the next two books are as good
Ok, Ill admit this series is a guilty pleasure of mine. I dont read shifter books as a general rule but when I have a challenge and I need one, this is my go to. Gavin and Ant are matched at the UPAC meeting and set up together in Indiana. There are some background issues for Ant with abuse and for Gavin, trouble with his father. However, a quick short read.
I am a sucker for unusual shifters and it is even better and here we get a mouse shifter (yay!) and lion shifter.
Ant and Gavin. Here is the thing. Gavin is a jerk. Now, he was raised to be that way but it is still annoying. However, he does learn and improve. But, yeah, he is mean and knee jerk to often.
Ant is much better character. Willing to make the best of a bad situation and supportive. Brave.
We get to spend time with the Pride which really who cares? Jerky Pride. Politics. Bleh.
I would have loved to spend time in mouse culture with the Mischief.
So, not great but I might try another in this multi author series because bunny shifter.
Okay, i think i should add context to my 4star rating. First, i picked up the first three books from this series because i expected them to be a bit of fluff- i think it's a bit naive to pick up a series called "midnight matings" from Manlove classics and expect deep literary nuance. The premise is insane, but it is what it is: the ruling council for all paranormals in the world ( a population drastically diminished by a war a quarter century before) decides it's time for everyone to get over it, and start getting along. Their edict, and the ensuing chaos is what is used as the basis for the entire series, which seems to center on mis-matched pairings struggling to find common ground in order to cement their love and secure their continued existence. Now, with that premise set in stone, if you can't abide by the rules of the series you probably shouldn't bother picking up any of the books. The first book lets us watch the evolution of the relationship between Gavin and Anthony (Ant), a lion and a mouse "shifter." Overall, the book is a nice study of the relationship between a rather angry young man with a lot of daddy issues, and a submissive man with a painful history. I think the thing that is most disturbing about the story is that it seems to be told with the fast forward button on. This rapid progression of story can leave the reader rolling their eyes in amazement as the relationship turns into a near literal roller-coaster ride of ups, downs, twists, and turns. Overall it's a pleasant ride, with a good finale.
This was a short quick read that I almost didn't complete when I found out that one of the MC's was a mouse shifter. The paranormal world is in chaos. The elders are tired of their younger people playing the field, causing trouble, and fighting with each other. Everyone who attends the UPAC Conference now has twenty-four hours to claim a mate of a different species. If they don't, they will never have a mate. The spell is cast. There is no escaping the Midnight Mating's. Software developer Gavin Ashby who is a lion shifter is perfectly happy with his life. He finds other people annoying after being around them for only a short period of time, and having a mate sounds like pure torture to him. Video game tester Ant Marino who is a mouse shifter is satisfied with his quiet, solitary life. After being accosted and almost forcibly mated, he meets the aloof but handsome Gavin. This was funny a lion and a mouse I had to laugh. I almost didn't complete this book because I thought that it wouldn't make since I am so glad that I did. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. As Anthony (Ant) and Gavin get to know one another they learn that both of them had a bad childhood that made me sad. Ant was in an abusive relationship and Gavin's mother left him with an abusive father. Ant showed Gavin how to love another person he was selfish and inconsiderate of other people's feelings. This is the first book in a new series to me and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. This book was funny.
I've been reading some of these stories from the Midnight Mating series and first I need to say - if you're going to read these, you need to understand from page one that these stories are basically, fluff stories. There is no great literature being written here. They are from the Everlasting ManLove department, for crying out loud. With that said, I really enjoy them, for exactly what they are. No more, no less.
I liked this first book about a lion and a mouse. Yep. Makes you think of the fable, huh? Yeah, me too. Gavin and Anthony are great together. The story has a little more depth to it than some of the others and overall it's fun smexiness and good times. Read it and enjoy!
Update 3/23/17 - it was a lot of fun to reread this first book in the series. It reminded me of how much I've always enjoyed this series because of the unique pairings.
Update 1/25/2021 ~ Wow, what a difference a number of years can make. My impression of Gavin and his misogynistic views is certainly different this time around. Granted, this story is pure brain candy, but in light of my new perspective I’m going to change my rating from a 4🌟 to a 3🌟

Awesome read.Okay as awesome as a shifter romance can be.Very cute, bit funny and entertaining read.I used to love mills & boon which had marriage of convenience as it had ample amount of drama in it.This story was something like that, but between two men.One the Lion shifter Gavin who was arrogant and a little jerk at times but with a very redeemable character(my instant love material)was forced into mating with Ant the mouse shifter who had hots for him and seek Gavin out when the UPAC casts the spell and ultimatum of mating within midnight.Though both had lots in common there would be some misunderstanding, jealousy and drama filled ride through out the story. Very enjoyable read if you are looking for something light.
The fear a lion shifter has to live with if mated to a mouse....(giggled for 5 mins straight before acknowledging the seriousness of the matter)
I only got about ten feet before I froze and scanned the yard. Nothing would make this worse except if I stepped on my own mate.
“Ant? Ant, where are you?” I cried out as my gaze darted all over the grass.
OH WOW. Gavin you are one major dickhead. Your actions in the beginning of the story really weren't enough for me to get over by the end of the book. Ant saved this for me. I ADORED him! He was a mouse shifter, but wasn't a pushover. I LOVED it.
I'm still laughing out loud about the idea of a lion mating a mouse but I can't say it didn't work. Gavin actually acted like an alpha male! I think it wasn't perfect...somehow the author still managed to make him full of angst and insecurities but he was the better written guy so far. He didn't cry, he didn't pout or whimpered much and he was assertive in his opinions and power. With this author that's all we can ask for. Ant managed to act like a mouse shifter without being annoying, dependent and obnoxiously clingy so I think this was actually a success character-wise. The writing still has a long way to go though. I still see a lot of trouble with formatting and grammar. The pace also needs to slow down. It would work better considering the development.

Pretty fluffy (hahaha) -- not bad for fast moving PWP with an extremely contrived premise. Although only having Gavin's POV has some drawbacks, I think the story would've imploded from the pressure of having Ant's thoughts fully represented. I doubt I'll be reading more of the Midnight Matings, but I've learned to never rule out something when I'm desperate to meet a reading challenge!
Ooookay... A lion shifter and a mouse shifter... A bit strange... But these kinds of books aren't exactly written as non-fiction, it's "check reality at the door", so I actually thought that it worked. This was an easy read, and I loved Ant. Gavin, not so much in the beginning, but he did get better.
I enjoyed this one but I'm not sure I'll continue with this series. The whole "mate-now!-panic" will probably feature in the rest of the series as well, and I think that might get real old real soon.
Giving this 3 was a bit tough for me. But 2 is just so low and although i did not care for this book it wasn't horrible so 3 it is.
the concept of forced matings was ok i guess but the plot was a mess. the book was choppy and sub characters just appeared out of nowhere...
then you have asshat Gavin for the MC. I understand his Dad was no role model... And Gavin had potential b/c he was strong enough to stand up to his Dad his whole life. So to me, that's a great foundation for a hot alpha MC, but the author missed the mark here and ended up using the dad as the excuse for all the MCs bad behavior. He was downright cruel to his mate at one point. And no, flowers won't work for an apology!
i found the relationship very immature. im actually starting to re-think the 3 stars tbh.
Interesting start to a new series. I found the concept of the 'forced matings', including all the consequences if people don't obey these totally arbitrary (as far as I can see after one book) rules to be somewhat ridiculous.
Still, that aside, the actual pairing of a lion and a mouse shifter had its appeal. Gavin the lion behaved in character (pompous, arrogant and unfeeling) until he learned his lesson, and Ant the mouse was cute, timid and - squeaky. I liked the way they approached each other once the preliminaries were out of the way. Each learned from the other and that was fun to watch.
A light, entertaining read, if you manage to suspend your disbelief around the forced mating idea.
I take anything written by Joyee Flynn with a pinch of salt and to be honest that’s normally the best way to approach her stories. This one specifically wasn’t half as bad as I’ve come to expect. Gavin is a lion shifter, which basically means he’s cold, unfeeling, an asshole and prone to big blowouts and misunderstandings. Until halfway through the book when he becomes a loving, caring mate thanks to Ant. And as for Ant, well, since we get everything from Gavin’s POV, Ant remains the squeaky, sweet mouse shifter. I really, really wish (for her sake as well as for mine) that Joyee Flynn would go back to writing switching third person POV, but we don’t always get what we wish for, do we?
I had a hard time choosing a rating on this story and an even harder time writing a review. I had high hopes for this story, but ended up thinking the quality of this one was lacking. It felt like this may have been a rush job to me. I stumbled over a number of typos, so it pulled me out of the story due to rereading. Perhaps Joyee wasn't the only one in a hurry?
The characters were a redeeming point. Ant is sweet and kind, and at the beginning I felt like he totally deserved better than Gavin's initial treatment. Fortunately, the man learned from his mistakes and stepped up. Good evolution there. The tension between Gavin and father, the pride leader, is well-developed, and some of Ant's reactions to the man entertaining.
In all, it has its pros and cons, but its still a cute read.
Such a fun series! There are currently 20 books in the series, each book is written by either Joyee Flynn, Gabrielle Evans or Stormy Glenn. They could keep writing more as long as they continue creating interesting characters who shift into all kinds of wonderful and different animals/mythical beings and coming up with unique stories full of romance, crazy drama, angst and let's not forget the very hot sex!
You don't have to read them in order, very rarely are other characters mentioned, but each story is very different and engaging and together they make for a fun few weeks of entertainment.
There is a spin-off series by Joyee Flynn with 8 books out so far called "Unmated by Midnight." I have not read those yet but they are on my to-be-read list next.
OK its has been a few days since I finished this book and I am still not sure what I make of it. I am just not too sure if I buy the premiss that is the back bone of this series. The story of these two men coming together and learning to live together was interesting and the dynamic of the family Gavin came from gave the story a layer it needed to make it work. I think I will have to read another in this series to decide how I feel about the core premiss but I have so many books I want that I think this one will have to wait until I have less on my series I am reading list.
I enjoyed this book, great start to a series. I just loved Anthony he was a sweetheart. I didn't think I would ever like Gavin he annoyed me so much at the beginning he was so rude to Anthony, not a reason not to read it, I figure if a book can tick me off then it did what it was supposed to do:-) He got much better as the book went on thank goodness. I have to say this is an interesting series and can't wait to read the other books out now and the future books in this series.

Cute little Siren romance. Fairly well written and easy to read. I love that part took place in Scotland...sexy and the mass mating seemed hectic. I'm guessing the rest of the books will start in the same way so great start to a series. In this one we have a mouse shifter and a lion shifter and unlike most shifter books, these are not fated mates. They chose each other and then had to live with that decision. Entertaining.
Ok this is by far the most awesome premise for a book I have ever read, and the execution is incredibly funny and sweet (and hot!). Ant and Gavin make such an improbable (!) yet adorable couple, the whole story was light and amusing, and all in all I will be reading more of it!
I'll admit I really didn't expect this book to be as good as it turned out being. I was just looking for something that wasn't very serious and the thought of a lion and mouse shifter mating sounded like it would be pretty funny. At the start of the book I thought that I might have made a mistake in judgement because the way it started sounded like the plot to some corny erotica. With the whole "everybody go mate now" proclamation. But it turned out I was wrong and I'm glad I was. The story was very cute and had a lot of unexpected plot twists. I loved Gavin and adored Ant. This book has made me realize it's not really paranormal books that I'm bored of it's the alpha-beat-their-chests books. This was a fun, short read and highly recommended.
I’ve been eye balling this series for awhile but cringed at paying around $4/5 per book, all under 100 pages I believe. Anywho I did end up finding this one from the publishers site for $1.99 which was reasonable to me and got me in the door of the series.
If you can over look some editing issues, plot issues it’s a decent read. Not anything I would have wanted to spend $5.00 on but decent.
Maybe spoilerish?
I will start out by saying that Gavin was an asshole, and I’m not totally sure he redeemed himself. I’ll ask note that he pushed his boundaries during a sex scene, I wouldn’t label it rape but definitely dub-con.
I did although love Ant. I have a soft spot for small prey shift and a mouse just kinda makes me happy.
***zaterdag 27 augustus 2022*** I know I've read this series before because once upon a time I was on binge and read almost everything by these authors. Like everything.
But I also didn't logged it back then and that is bugging me now so I'm adding them based on the one review I did wrote:Fur And Flightless by Joyee Flynn
