The late cult rocker Ian Dury's strange fusion of music hall, punk rock, and disco brought him to stardom with hits like "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" and "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll." Dury's band, The Blockheads, was the musical force behind his articulate and thought-provoking lyrics, and in this book members discuss their back catalog of hits, as well as their memories of the great man.
A wonderful read, a song-by-song celebration of the life of my all time favourite London singer and performer. Some great music came out of my home city of London during the punk and new wave explosion - The Clash, The Jam and Madness to name but a few. That said, none of them could hold a candle to Ian Dury and the inimitable Blockheads. What a sound they had, an impossible fusion of rock 'n roll, punk, funk and music hall, an eclectic mix over which Dury sang, barked and swore as only Dury could! A super book.
Thoroughly enjoyable as it gives a different side to Ian Dury's story through his lyrics. And it also gives a rare voice to The Blockheads themselves. Refreshing to hear their point of view for a change.
