Alfred Elton van Vogt was a Canadian-born science fiction author regarded by some as one of the most popular and complex science fiction writers of the mid-twentieth century—the "Golden Age" of the genre.

van Vogt was born to Russian Mennonite family. Until he was four years old, van Vogt and his family spoke only a dialect of Low German in the home.

He began his writing career with 'true story' romances, but then moved to writing science fiction, a field he identified with. His first story was Black Destroyer, that appeared as the front cover story for the July 1939 edtion of the popular "Astounding Science Fiction" magazine.

Siege of the Unseen

Originally, this was a novella entitled “The Chronicler” which first appeared in the pages of the 1946 October and November issue of Astounding. What I read was the 1959 Ace double version entitled “Siege of the Unseen” (I have not yet read "The World Swappers" by Brunner but will eventually). It has also later appeared under the title “The Three Eyes of Evil” in a British hardback omnibus. Whether there are differences between these versions, I am not certain, though van Vogt often updated or re-tooled much of his stories and novels as they were reprinted over time.

“Siege of the Unseen” starts out with Michael Slade’s attorney describing Mr. Slade’s discovery of a third eye that was concealed beneath the skin of his forehead after getting into an automobile accident. From there the story hits the ground running, morphing into unexpected absurdity. It is classic van Vogt and I consider it one of his more entertaining efforts.
