As a Kindergarten teacher and a lover of children's literature, I can tell you that No, David! is a very special book. This story does not need a lot of words in order to be captivating. Instead, it grabs the reader because it so accurately depicts the spirit of the child. Children will be children, and what to them is great fun, to an adult can be a definite no-no. It is through David's innocence, and his precarious foothold in the world, that we are instantly transported back to our own childhoods, where we too had to learn that there were consequences for our actions. I can't imagine that there is a person out there that cannot identify with the round-headed, gap-toothed David.

I love the illustration style in David Shannon's books. There are so many different perspectives & points the picture is viewed from. I bought these books because of the simplicity of the writing, yet me & my six year old read them over and over. David stays in mischief, and it is hilarious. We even had to Have the diaper David books and the pirates. It's such simple books with wonderful, humorous illustrations. I & my son live David!
This is defiantly a favorite of mine! It is so easily relatable by young children and with minimal words it opens a door to the wonderful world of imagination!
Extensions- Have the children write about a time they kept getting in trouble.
David and his mother have a few rounds in the story about david doing things that he's not supposed to do. Good to read to kindergarteners but 1st graders could read on own. easy to read, few words on each page.
No David was named as a Caldecott Honor Book, an ALA Notable Children's Book, a Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books Blue Ribbon title, a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, and was on the New York Times Best Illustrated Book list.
I love this book, how David is always getting in trouble the things he does that makes him get in trouble. how he has an excuse for everything. its a great book , makes anyone who reads it laughing.
