From the bestselling author of The Plainsman Western series comes a 2024 Independent Press Award Distinguished Favorite for Historical Fiction—an exciting and explosive new Western series.
It is a time of uncertainty in the infancy of a growing nation. The Wild West is open and beckoning to displaced men and families, many of whom choose to travel to the unsettled frontier, dreaming of new homes, land, and even riches. But few reckon on those who have lived in those lands for centuries—the native peoples. Blackfoot, Crow, Sioux, and more.
Elijah McCain, fresh from the Union army where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the Mounted Rifles—a cavalry unit under General Sherman—has returned home to find his wife on her deathbed, pleading for her twin sons. She elicits a promise, a covenant, from her “Find our boys, and bring them home.”
So, Eli vows to do just that. Holding her hand as she slips from life, he promises to bring their sons home—no matter what. Even if it’s undoing of dreams, lives, and more.
Born and raised in Colorado into a family of ranchers and cowboys, B.N. Rundell is the youngest of seven sons. Juggling bull riding, skiing, and high school, graduation was a launching pad for a hitch in the Army Paratroopers. After the army, he finished his college education in Springfield, MO, and together with his wife and growing family, entered the ministry as a Baptist preacher. Together, B.N. and Dawn raised four girls that are now married and have made them proud grandparents. With many years as a successful pastor and educator, he retired from the ministry and followed in the footsteps of his entrepreneurial father and started a successful insurance agency, which is now in the hands of his trusted nephew. He has also been a successful audiobook narrator and has recorded many books for several award-winning authors. Now finally realizing his life-long dream, B.N. has turned his efforts to writing a variety of books, from children’s picture books and young adult adventure books, to the historical fiction and western genres which are his first love.
DNF. This book was definitely not for me! I found the characters 1-dimensional stereotypes, the writing style amateurish at best, and the plot uninteresting. My guess about the high rating is that because it’s a Christian story (should have guessed by the name but didn’t) the readers who liked it chose to read it for that reason. I wasn’t going to write a review but thought people considering reading it might like to know.
I really liked this book. It has lots of action and suspense. I found it hard to put down, I wanted to keep reading. I felt like I was in the middle of the action. It was very well written and had a believable plot. I am looking forward to the next book to continuing to follow the story. I am hooked! I highly recommend this book to all readers.
As usual B.N. Russell delivers a great story with likeable characters and a storyline that leaves you wanting more. I recommend this book as we wait for book two!
Excellent beginning story in a new series. Rundell’s description of our country’s land and its beauty is well worth the read. The story line is packed with excitement. Can’t wait for next book coming in April.
The Covenant – McCain Chronicles #1 by B. N. Rundell
This is the first novel I’ve read by Mr. Rundell.
I discovered much to like in this story.
First the setting was unique for me – a riverboat journey up the Missouri River from St. Louis to Montana. I’ve written four Westerns and read probably hundreds of others. This is first I’ve read set on a riverboat for the entire novel.
Mr. Rundell uses the exact amount of detail to make the setting realistic to the point of putting me on the river. I experienced the dangers of navigating a river with as many twists and turns as a Hitchcock movie. His description of the lands they pass through and how business was done on the journey displays both the extent of his research and his ability to incorporate it into the narrative of his main story so it’s part of the action.
Mr. Rundell’s characters come alive in the story from the main characters like Eli McCain the boat’s captain, secondary characters who add flavor and adventure to the journey, and the minor characters.
McCain is on a journey to find his two stepsons after his wife dies. The twin boys deserted the army and were on their way to the gold fields. Along, the way he finds evidence he is on the path the young men took.
McCain is well and believably prepared for the roles he will play. He has a military background. He was stationed in the area before serving in Civil War. He has a heart to help those in need, and a strong sense of right and wrong, and the skills to stand for justice despite deadly threats.
Along the way he meets two families. One is a woman, Harriet Hamilton, her son Benjamin, and her two daughters. They’re on their way to Helena Montana to reunite with her husband who has struck gold there.
The other family is Luther Williams, his wife, Mildred, and his daughter, Maribel. They are on their way west to open mercantile in the gold fields. Benjamin and Maribel provide the story of two young people falling in love for the first time.
McCain chooses to accompany the families to help them on their journey.
On the riverboat, he uncovers a plot to send state-of-the-art repeating rifles to the Sioux. He leads the fight to defeat an Indian attack and the efforts of the smugglers to secure the weapons.
He also meets Constance Wellington, a widow with business interests in the gold fields. The attraction develops and seeds are planted which will surely develop over the next two volumes in the series.
I highly recommend this fast-paced, tension filled, and enjoyable story.

Great start to a series, pulls you in, captivates your interest and takes you away to wondrous places.
Searching for his adopted sons, the sons of his best friend who never got to meet them. He married his best friends wife on a promise. Now he seeks his sons on a covenant from his wife who died of consumption. Many things happen long the way and it shows the kind of man he is. Can't wait for the next book. Highly recommended for all readers.
Eli was on a mission to find his twin step sons. Meeting a mother and her three children being attacked by 3 men trying to rob and take her two daughters. Helping them and others along the way to Montana. B.N. Russell is one of my favorite authors. Always look for his books.
Eli McCain is on a quest to find his step sons. He promised his dead wife. He does not know where the boys are, only that they deserted the war and headed west. Following clues, he meets many travelers along the way, helping where he can. Wonderful description of the country and interesting characters along the journey.
This was a great book, I loved the stallion and the mustang the most! But I think the color, claybank or red dun was totally wrong for the bloodlines, Morgan's nor Tennessee Walker's carry that gene, but the mustang does as does the Quarter horse. Also a claybank is not a red dun but a yellow dun. A awesome story and great writing!
This turned out to be an excellent read!!!!! Wasn’t the ending that I thought it would be. I will be reading book two of the series. I highly recommend this book to readers fad and wide.
It seemed to be more of an adventure story than a western. I am still pleased to continue on with this series.
It was very enjoyable reading but I was terribly distracted by the overuse of one word -chuckle and this is the first time that I have ever found myself disconcerted by the overuse of a word.
A very interesting story of a promise of a man, to his dying wife, to find their twin sons, and bring them home. Yes, I will recommend this story to family and friends.
I have read all your books. This one is of just as excellent writing as all have been. Action packed, full of twist and turns, laughter, tears, hope, caring, joy, and lots of adventure. Can't wait for the next book.
The author has written a great story of the adventures of a ex-soldier who trying to find his stepsons and fulfill his promise to his ex wife. A story full of action, adventure and suspense.
When author introduce Eli the character just bloomed. He helped several people. Helped the Captain. Took care of outlaws. I'm excited to get on with the next one so I see if runs into his sons.
Great action packed novel. Plot and characters change enough to keep the book interesting but not enough to lose focus on the main characters and the overall plot. Gave this book a 5 star rating and recommend it for anyone who like western drama
Another good western story about good people facing the trials of a new territory, new lifestyle, building friendships, and creating new lives away from the meaner side of this world, or rather, in spite of the meaner side. Very satisfying adventure.
Wagon train and river cruise from east coast to the rugged mountains of Montana and the gold fields . This entire journey had good guy's and others to keep the readers interest. Excellent read.
Once Author Rundell has written an exciting book without all the vulgarity involved. The Covenant is a book of fiction, yet has a lot of historical facts to make for good reading. I would recommend Arthur Rundell's books to anyone.
This is a good read! The book moved well, also with very nice descriptions of the countryside, the Big Muddy and the conniving of man. Highly recommended!
Very interesting. Will hold your attention from start to finish. Great story line. Makes me feel that I am experiencing Eli’s journey along side of him.
Not much of a story. Rich man wandering around spending money on total strangers while he looks for his sons who are not his sons. Doesn't find them. No real ending.
