The Gargoyle's Secret

Rate this book
an alternate cover edition can be found here

When Laurel Bachmann arrives at Stonehaven Manor to craft a feature article on the historic coastal mansion near Bar Harbor, Maine, the talented young photojournalist quickly learns that the owner of Stonehaven resents her intrusion upon his privacy.

Matters grow even worse when she stumbles upon a buried mystery that could cause a news sensation and ruin the Chevalier family’s sterling reputation.

But that’s not the only enigma, for Marc Chevalier himself seems to be harboring more than one secret.

A cozy paranormal mystery set on the rugged coast of Maine, The Gargoyle’s Secret has two mysteries wrapped up in one tale, with a touch of paranormal romance (for those readers who like a bit of romance to go with their mysteries) and a very unusual gargoyle.

The Gargoyle’s Secret is a solid cozy mystery with a unique paranormal angle to it.

When her famed photojournalist father had to go into the hospital, Laurel Bachmann, a rising star who apprenticed at her father’s feet, steps in to fulfill his latest assignment to interview the renowned stonemason, Marc Chevalier, and photograph his historic estate, Stonehaven, a mystery-shrouded manor house perched on a rocky outcrop near Bar Harbour on the coast of Maine. She is informed immediately upon arrival that the piece she’s to do was encouraged by Marc’s mother, Serena, and he wants no part of it. But with her father’s imminent retirement on the line and his editor clamoring for a juicy human interest angle to the story, Laurel decides to tough it out with the secretive Mr. Chevalier, hoping to develop something suitable without indulging in rumors, gossip, or scandal, a practice she’s avoided her entire career. However, the manor and Marc’s family both have a mysterious past. Over 100 years ago, a visiting millionaire art collector had disappeared from Stonehaven, never to be seen again, and when Laurel stumbles across evidence that the man never left the island alive, her story and stay at the estate take a dark turn.

The Gargoyle’s Secret is the entertaining first book in a new paranormal, cozy mystery series, the Stonehaven Mysteries, by author Linn Chapel. The protagonist, Laurel Bachmann, is genuinely likable, smart, and a talented artist. She felt like a real person. Her foil, Marc Chevalier, is too handsome for Laurel’s own good. In addition, he’s mysterious and paranormally-talented besides being a successful stonemason with a burgeoning business restoring old and valuable pieces of sculpture and statuary. The mystery is pretty straightforward, a person unknown is digging around and searching for something at the manor, and with few people on the remote estate, suspects are limited. The reader can easily keep the players straight and try to figure out who the culprit is.

There is some confusion toward the end of Laurel’s stay as to continuity: in one chapter, we go from morning to afternoon, but then it’s morning still, and there’s seems to be one too many nights occurring in the timeline. I was also confused over what happened to the missing millionaire. I won’t say more because it would reveal too much for a potential reader. But overlooking these details, it was still a good, entertaining reading experience.

I recommend THE GARGOYLE’S SECRET to readers that enjoy a cozy mystery with a paranormal overlay. It is suitable for readers of all ages.

I found this book on BookSirens and thought it sounded cute and I'm a sucker for paranormal mysteries. This proved to be a cute, easy read and I loved the spooky atmosphere, made for a great read late in the evening.

Laurel is a photojournalist with an assignment for a piece on Stonehaven Mansion and the family that owns it. There seems to be several mysteries at Stonehaven; a man who went missing decades ago, someone searching the grounds for something, and even the master of the house, Marc, seems to be hiding something. Although the plot moved along quickly due to not being a very long book, it unrolled leisurely, with lots of detail to bring the story alive without dragging it down. The picture created of the beautiful Maine setting and the Gothic mansion and of the many characters really brought it to life. There was a bit more romance than a typical cozy mystery, so I'd call this more a romance mystery than a cozy mystery but it wasn't graphic or in your face. If you like a bit more romance in your cozy, this is for you.

Overall, a great start for a newer author and if there's a second book, I'll definitely pick it up.

The historical coastal mansions of Maine. Paranormal family secrets, hidden mysteries and gargoyles.

This was charming, easy to read and a real page turner. It's a short (177pgs) story perfect for a rainy day when you want to curl up and read.

The characters are interesting and memorable. The story is smooth and fluent. There is a tad bit of romance but this is really a mystery. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I received this book as an ARC from booksirens. All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this book a lot. A paranormal mystery with two secrets to be solved. I liked both the main characters and the development of their relationship. The mysteries were fun and unique. The solving of the mysteries included appropriate clues and red herrings. The only con I have for this story is that there is little suspense. The mysteries and their resolutions are a tiny bit matter-of-fact. Regardless of that one small con, I liked the book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal mysteries.

This is a case of it being me and not the book. I am in the minority here and I would like to say that I liked the book but it really isn't my cup of tea.

I love cozy mysteries and this sounded right up my alley, throw in a gargoyle and I'm set. But for a short book it took a very long time for me to read.

The writing is solid and it has a vrey gothic vibe going on however what I didn't like and connect with were the characters.

Great start to a series.

What a lovely little story to begin the month of October. Was looking for more than just a mystery. More than a romance. Something with a little of both and a slightly paranormal touch as well. I found exactly that in this book. There is even some historical aspects to it as well. Toward the end, I found myself thinking this would have been a great episode of the original Scooby-Doo mysteries, which I dearly loved. So that’s a good thing. The story was believable in a weird sort of way. Like a fantasy that’s put forth as reality. The ending was wrapped up well enough that you don’t have to continue on, but I really do want to know what’s next for these characters. It is a very quick read. It is a clean read. I always appreciate that. Already have the second book loaded and ready to go.

I’m not sure what to say except WOW! This book easily sucked me in and the whole time I was hoping for a true love happy ending with a Wedding. Instead got a cliffhanger so that means I have to read the next ones in the series. I very much like Marc and his hypnotic power and Laurel is definitely his match. And I really really like the Gargoyle cat with bat wings.

Such a gripping suspense read. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because I found a lot of typos in the book. Words that were just omitted to make the sentence complete, happened quite a few times but overall the story and characters were all great. Especially Marc 😉.

A very sweet slow mystery. With very very mild paranormal aspects to it.

Both heroes are reluctant to trust the either, Lauren because she is there to finish her fathers jobs so he may retire, Marc Chevalier because he does not trust the police, it was not his idea to invite Lauren, rather it was his mother who did.

This book was a very sweet read, it was not clear what was wrong with Lauren's dad but she was there to do the best she could, she did not like the pressure his publicist was putting on her to find an angle. Preferring instead to see the estate and Chevalier's work for what it is, rather than looking for an underhanded story.

Lauren and Chevalier end up working together, I did enjoy the slow build of their trust of one another.

I did not like when Marc used his compelling charms on Lauren it could have stopped before his last command which in todays world I believe was a step to far and made me feel uncomfortable for Lauren. No one should be at the behest of some one else's power. and I do think Lauren should have stood up for herself after rather than walking away.

I always have to give props to anyone who has written a book, it’s more than I’ve done.
BUT I was given a free arc to give an honest review so here it goes:

I picked to read this book for several reasons. 1) it was on the shorter side and I figured that was a good way to dip my foot into booksiren reviews. 2) it features a gargoyle- and anyone who knows me knows I love gargoyles. my house is covered inside and out with them. IN FACT I actually have a cat gargoyle in my front garden.

But this book was just- awkward.
Awkward transitions, awkward passing of time. Awkward word choices.
Everything seemed too convenient.
It read like a overly detailed outline compared to a finished product. The idea was there, it just needed ... something.

And then the supernatural elements appeared exactly halfway through the book. It seemed unnatural, forced. For that matter so did the “romance”.

“I’m not a very nice man am I.” No! You’re not. Because taking advantage of a woman is not sexy. Why is she still attracted to him? Because you bonded over a shared ‘character quirk’ of meditating??

Not to mention the supernatural things didn’t even shock her that such things were possible, what? because she meditates she is open and accepting of magic and all supernatural forces without once exclaiming how weird and wonderful and impossible it is?

Ok Here it is.
“He was able to turn creatures into stone.” This is the story. This is the spark, the brilliant idea. Im not being sarcastic. This was the clever nugget, A ancestor who was a stone worker with a magical ability. The package it came in just needed to be cleaned up and the characters needed to be given more chemistry.

A lot of these things separately I can forgive, and honestly I could forgive them all IF the story had kept me engaged and entertained.
I have to learn that “cozy mysteries” are the mystery book equivalent to the romance harlequin books and they just aren’t for me. So, if you like harlequin and mystery with paranormal thrown in then you’ll like this book. For me I’m sorry to say, it just fell very short.

I do have to note that there was a line in there that i loved because -and I’m sure it wasn’t intentional- but it reminds me of a line from a VLDL YouTube skit. “Has someone been prowling in here?”

Lol must of been the wind.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Language: None
Violence: Mild
Sex: Forced kisses
Editing: Professional

I hate to leave negative reviews, and probably wouldn't leave one if I hadn't agreed to to review it. As far as how I felt about it, it's 2 stars, but if I'm taking my personal tastes out of the equation, it could pass for a 3 content wise.

Cons:
-The writing is stilted. I'm not sure I can pinpoint exactly how, but I was thrown out of the story multiple times when sentences failed to flow naturally.
-It is so boring. I had to start skimming a little after 50% in because I just couldn't handle it any more.
-I felt nothing for the characters. Their emotions failed to come through and the reader is reliant on being told, flatly, their character traits. I also don't like being told things when they conflict with the evidence. For example, the book keeps telling me about Laurel being observant, but what she actually does in the book is notice obvious things and then make erroneous snap judgments.
-There is no chemistry between the main characters. I have no clue why they like each other.
-The mystery wasn't mysterious. The culprit was incredibly obvious and cliché.
-At one point, a drunk tries to force his affections on Laurel and when asked about it she excuses it as if it doesn't matter. Assault matters. Harassments matters. Maybe he would have left her alone after a kiss ( which still isn't acceptable ), but the evidence was he was trying to force more than that until his boss showed up.
- To tack onto my above complaint, Marc later magically compels Laurel to tell him personal things that are none of his business and then to do some things. She doesn't even bat an eye about what he pulls in that scene until much later, and it's barely what that kind of behavior deserves.

Pros:
-The editing is good. I didn't see many mistakes.
-There isn't anything inappropriate in it ( unless you get upset about the brief harassments I mentioned).
-None of the main characters are necessarily hate-able.
-It's short.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

Dual POV.

The female lead was okay.

I liked the male lead until he

How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).

Laurel Bachmann, a reporter is traveling to Stonehaven to do a feature on the property and its master, Marc Chevalier. She is met upon her arrival by Gabe McAllister, an assistant to Marc in his stone working business. She had been invited by his mother, Serena. Marc is unhappy with the arrangement, but agrees to allow Laurel to go ahead with her story. It isn't long before they become friends and she starts to aid him in his search for some missing family records. Laurel is returning from a walk on the cliff and inadvertently slips. She manages to catch herself, but the fall uncovers a finger bone. She relates the news to Marc and together they uncover the skeleton of a man who had disappeared without a trace over one hundred years prior. Buried in the rubble along with the skeleton is a gargoyle of a cat. It is undamaged and clearly not made of granite. This is just the first of many strange happenings at Stonehaven. Someone is searching the house looking for the lost inventories as are Marc and Laurel. Who is searching and what would the inventories reveal if found? How did the skeleton die and was he murdered or was it an accident? Where does the gargoyle come in to the story or is the search for something more valuable?

This quick read is packed full of mystery.
When Laurel's father is hospitalized, she takes it on herself to finish a photo journalism assignment alone. She is sent to an isolated estate full of medieval statuary to learn more about the family and business history. Hopefully her article will also rejuvenate the Chevalier family finances.
What she finds upon arrival is a cold welcome, being tolerated at best.

Besides the legend of quality stone workers, other myths and rumors float about this family.
Supposedly an area of the house is haunted. Possibly certain members of the family have unusual powers. But the heir and now master of the house has mysteries of his own to solve.
Things are out of place, mysterious lights are seen, and for many decades, something of value has been missing.
There is also a century old mystery involving a guest who was never seen or heard from again.

What will Laurel uncover as she takes on her assignment?
Although there is some flirty tension between her and the male heir, I appreciated that they do not immediately fall madly into love at first sight.
I appreciated that they acknowledged their differences but did find some common ground.
And I felt affection for the winged hero.

A fun escape read that had enough twists and red herrings to keep the mystery moving.

Loved the Gargoyle
Enjoyable read, my first paranormal with a gargoyle cat. I thought that was creative and enjoyed that creature. The setting was great for the storyline too. I thought the basic plot was decent and the writing flowed well enough. The main male character, Marc, has some paranormal talent and I thought he used it in a way that did not reflect positively on him.
The female main character, Laurel, was not as strong as I like for a heroine, but she was ok. I would have like to see a bit more backbone when dealing both with the drunk and Marc when he used his abilities on her.
Not much of a romance, some minor kissing and attraction, not much chemistry between the two main characters, there is no HEA. I would say it is more of a mystery that does get resolution. But I felt there were some issues at the end that were left open ended. Maybe that will be addressed in the second book. An enjoyable short read, but also had a few too many typo errors. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.

She needs to uncover the stone carver’s secret.

Stonehaven is not Laurel Bachmann’s normal assignment, but her father needs her to fill in for him while he is in the hospital. It is obvious from the start, that Marc Chevalier, the owner of the incredible estate with its amazing statuary does not want her there. Fortunately, his mother granted the interview. Her father’s manager insists that the article must have a human-interest angle but Marc Chevalier is adamant that the story have a narrow focus. It will be difficult to save her father’s photojournalistic legacy unless she can persuade him to change his mind.

This book is an interesting combination of paranormal, mystery, and romance. The architecture of the mansion and the craggy setting provided plenty of opportunities for hiding places and family secrets. I received a free of this book but my review is voluntary and honest. It was an enjoyable read with some good intrigue and I am curious to see what the next book in the series is like.

I am always down for a cozy mystery and the gargoyle on the front looked like a cat, so I was sold.

This book ended up being really cute. I liked the setting, Stonehaven was appropriately creepy and atmospheric but not too scary. The main characters were interesting as well. Both Marc and Layla jumped to conclusions about one another but ended up working together and figuring out the truth behind their assumptions.

There were also some paranormal elements that I didn't expect that added to the story and helped explain both the characters and the plot.

I hope this series ends up continuing because I would like to see how Marc and Layla's relationship ends up as well as the fates of the other characters.

Laurel Bachmann heads for Stonehaven Manor to write a story about the historic coastal mansion near Bar Harbor, Maine. Laurel is a photojournalist and good at her job, but the owner of the mansion doesn’t want her there. Things get even more complicated when she unearths a buried mystery -- a skeleton and a bigger surprise that could damage the Chevalier family’s reputation. Marc Chevalier also appears to be hiding a secret or two! Can she get to the bottom of what’s going on here?

With multiple mysteries to pull the reader in, you will be kept guessing as to what has happened here in the past. That paranormal touch makes such a great touch of intrigue! Will Marc and Laurel discover what happened? Or will Marc be trying to keep it all covered up? Grab your copy and find out!

I truly enjoyed this story, wish it was longer but I see there is going to be a second book. This is the first book I have read by this author. The two secrets in the story were great and we all like a cozy mysteries. The bit of romance between Laurel and Marc was intriguing and of course you can not forget Marc's mother playing matchmaker. The mysteries and solutions were quite quick and " a matter of fact". maybe we need a little more suspense. But really I liked the story and the characters a lot. The Gargoyle’s Secret is a fun, quick read with multiple mysteries to unravel. Where is the missing gargoyle? What happened to the man who disappeared years ago? What is Marc Chevalier’s secret? Who is searching the grounds?
Laurel is heading to the Chevalier’s estate to photograph and write a story about the Chevalier family. Marc, the current head of the family, is not pleased that his mother asked for the publicity, but before long he and Laurel are cooperating to solve the mysteries surrounding them. Lots of red herrings keep things interesting, as does the evolving relationship between Laurel and Marc. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series. If you enjoy a paranormal angle to cozy mysteries, be sure to read this!

Book Sirens gave me the opportunity to read an ARC of “The Gargoyle’s Secret” by Linn Chapel in return for an honest review. It turned out to be a good mystery story, well thought out and having a good secret with an unexpected twist at the end. It is more a novella than a novel and could have used a bit more suspense, which probably could have been achieved by having the characters jumping to conclusions less and deducing more.

The world building is excellent with good character development and a nice gothic, creepy atmosphere. The protagonist, Laurel, is believable and the development of the relationship between the main characters, Marc, his mother and Laurel, is well thought out.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a cozy mystery with a paranormal twist.

But Marc was against it because he thought that she was just a nosy photojournalist. Then they found a dead body from that disappeared in the nineteen twenties and found the missing gargoyle with the body. They had a couple of mysteries to solve about the body and the gargoyle and who was looking for a rare and valuable statue. Before she went home all of the mysteries were solved after nearly being killed. This book has a lot of action and the perso looking for the statue was a surprise! Great book!

Linn Chapel has a way with words. She created a classic gothic, parnormal romance mystery that delivers a who done it feel. I enjoyed reading this book emencly. It had a quick moving plot, a bit of suspense and surprise, and characters you feel like you would know from your home town. I was intreged by the decripted spooky atmosphere and the hidden family secrets.
An excellent exciting book. I was disappointed by the ending, but then I realized there would be a book two. The story would continue. Hooray! Thank you! I am waiting eagerly to delve into the next adventure from Linn Chapel. Read this book! You will love it!

The Gargoyle’s Secret is the first book in the Stonehaven Mysteries series by Linn Chapel.

Laurel is a photojournalist sent to Stonehaven for a story. Serena Chevalier is pleased with the publicity that Laurel’s article will bring, but her son, Marc, has secrets he doesn’t want Laurel to uncover.

It’s an entertaining story when Marc and Laurel team up to solve mysteries. There’s just one section where Marc does something that is creepy to Laurel, but otherwise it was enjoyable. I look forward to reading book 2.

This was an unexpected read for me. I went in expecting more paranormal and less cozy mystery, but I did enjoy the intrigue once I adjusted my expectations. Laurel came to the manor to photograph and do a story about the owner and his stone restoration business. Marc doesn’t want her there and they start out adversarially, but gain trust in each other with time and work together as detectives. I enjoyed the romantic tension between the pair but did not like the scene where Marc questioned Laurel, it painted him in a very poor light. I really enjoyed this mystery because it is full of the unexpected. Laurel is very aware with an artists keen eye, and notices details.

Her detailed descriptions of the rugged coast of Maine, the stone mansion as she reveals it through tendrils of fog adds a gothic touch. So many legends about the Chevaliers, hint at secrets, and danger to come.

The characters are wonderful. The sweet mother plotting romance, the growing attraction despite Chevalier, always scowling, being nothing like Laurel wants in a man, but her gaze is drawn to the broad shoulders, and a catlike gargoyle

Great start to a new series! I really enjoyed this book. It features a photojournalist who stumbles across not one but two mysteries. Then there is the dashing reclusive owner of Stonehaven Manor. What is he hiding? As they start working together they realize there is someone working against them. But who is it? Just when you think you’ve figured it out there is a surprise twist. I highly recommend this book. And Ms. Chapel already has plans for the next book to come out in January 2021. I can hardly wait!

When Laurel arrives at Stonehaven to write a feature story on a stonemason and his family home it gets a little more complicated than expected. Mysteries emerge and an attraction to Marc Chevalier that the reader will find intriguing. "The Gargoyle's Secret" is reminiscent of a Phyllis Whitney story or even Nancy Drew mysteries in my opinion, and for that reason I enjoyed it! When the villain was captured I actually thought about Scooby-Doo as well, not that it's written so much like them, but that it was such a clean mystery that solved itself so quickly.

An entertaining novella with an fascinating mystery! I understand that this is part of a series so I'm interested to see how the characters' relationships with each other develops. I was a tad skeptical about Laurel's fascination with one of the main characters because he seems like a quite sketchy character! (Let's just say he has some issues with the concept of consent). I was expecting a bit more about the gargoyle itself but it makes sense that there was more of a mystery surrounding it. An entertaining read!

And when Laurel accidentally uncovers a decades old secret, things get very tense. Can Laurel and Marc work together to solve the mystery and preserve the Chevalier name?

I really enjoyed this quick, fun story which is first in the series. With a mystery wrapped in the paranormal, you have an intriguing read. The book's well-written with wonderful characters and it'll draw you in from the beginning. I'm looking forward to the next book.

I received this ARC from Hidden Gem Books for my honest review.

This was a fun, quick read. There were a few spots that were clunky but they smoothed themselves out eventually. Interesting characters. I definitely definitely definitely want to know more about Marc. I liked that there was not one mystery, but two! But I do hope Linn ramps up the suspense in the second book. I think that was the only lackluster part of this fun little story for me. Looking forward to the second book!
