Legacy Witches #2

Forgotten Ghosts

Rate this book
Vianna has finally stopped running from her legacy, but she refuses to be a part of Salem's daily drama. Instead, she's content to work in her garden, bond with the family familiar, and make candles.

When an old friend reaches out about ghostly encounters in the tunnels that run below his hoodoo shop, Vianna and roommate bestie Dee agree to poke around. But they're not the only ones on the case. Bossy Detective Elliott insists they combine their efforts, despite centuries of mistrust between law enforcement and the craft.

Down in the tunnels, their unlikely trio entangles with a team of ghost hunters-which can't be a coincidence. In order to find out what the ghosts want, she'll have to learn to trust her new alliances and the magic within her.

This is an excellent follow up to the first novel, Legacy Witches, which was one of my favorite reads last year! I've been so anxiously awaiting this sequel! I adore our main cast of character so much, and also love the little love interest thrown in! Tons of witchy and ghosty vibes and I love it. And I absolutely love the way Cass Kay tells a story! Straight to the point!

I was so excited to read this second book in the series as I really enjoyed the first one. This one is so much better than the first one, and the first one was excellent. Poor Vianna is still on shaky ground with the covens and not sure where she fits in with both her magic and the covens. In this one we find out more about a lot of things I can’t really mention, or I’ll spoil some revelations, but suffice it to say, they are intriguing, and they will lead to some great stuff in future books. I loved this addition to the series, and I can’t wait to see what the next book will bring. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

*4,5/5*

Favorite character: Vianna
Three words: creepy / entertaining / haunting
Favorite quote: Some part of her had thought she was different, that she could bond with Shuck and things would be different from the witches before her. But she wasn't different. She was just another tool for him to commit murder and mayhem.

After being bonded to the family familiar shuck, Vianna has a hard time adjusting to the new experience. Although the demon Shuck has bonded with the last eleven generations of her family, she cannot trust him, as all the Root witches were murderers and Vianna doesn't want to become a tool for the demon and start killing too.
Additionally, Vianna still has to deal with the members of Original Blood Coven who despise her and her status as a solitary witch, and who support her violent ex Charles in his ambition to become the new mayor.
Luckily, Vianna can count on her roommate and bestie Dee, who keeps her entertained with a booth at the witch market and the ridiculous idea of starting a ghost hunting service. When weird things start happening around and in the tunnel system below her childhood friend Tuck's hoodoo shop, the ghost hunter job becomes reality sooner than Vianna would have liked.
Of course, detective Eliott is also snooping around the weird occurrences, and he is so persistent that he, Vianna and Dee form an alliance, despite the centuries of antipathy and mistrust between witches and the police.

I read this book in 24h. I feel a bit guilty because of it, authors put so much time and effort into writing their books, but I just couldn't stop reading. The first book, Legacy Witches, was amazing and this one didn't disappoint either, which is not always the case with the second book of a series.
The main character Vianna deals a lot with the aftermath of what happened in the first book, her newly bond with the family familiar Shuck and her status as a solitary witch.
I feel like I'm always torn between there isn't enough happening and I would be perfectly contend reading about the main character's daily life and getting to experience all the witchy side stuff. Maybe there could have been a bit more action and drama in the first half, but I guess Vianna deserved some time to breath, after everything that happened.
I'm so happy for Dee to finally do "real" magic and I hope she finds her own way in the next book! Sometimes she feels a bit like the sidekick between Vianna and Elliott. Spoiler: I love that, with discovering Elliott's secret, we're getting a new group of people and I can't wait to learn more about them.
I believe there will be three books in this series but I definitely can see myself reading more. The magic system with the different witch covens and hoodoo practitioners is so interesting, I want to know more!

This book was kindly provided to me as a reviewers copy by Cass Kay.

Having read the first book of this series and enjoyed it so well, I was excited to get the chance to read this second book. Thanks to the author for the ARC.

Our heroine, Vianna is just as interesting and compelling as she was in the first book. Her best friend, Sandeen—known as Dee—lives with her now and they are making a home together. Two outcasts as neither belong to a coven, they have bonded as friends and each has the other’s back. I really enjoy their dynamic and personalities.

Of course, being Vianna, troubles come to call from various sources. Even the creepy nephew of her old landlord in Boston shows up. He smells like canned bacon and that made me laugh every time she mentioned it as I have never heard of such a thing though I can imagine just how lovely that smell could be. LOL

The author is very good at descriptions. She has the characters attend a witches fair and I loved how she evoked the atmosphere of first, the booths of items for sale, then the bonfire and the magic that occurs around it at the end of the fair. The fall setting was particularly well done. It’s my favorite season and I could almost feel like I was there despite the 90 degree weather as I read this book.
Part of the story takes place in tunnels under the city of Salem. Ms. Cass did a great job in atmospheric writing there and in her descriptions of the inhabitants of the tunnels.

Lots of drama like in the first book, some surprises from characters we thought we knew, and an interesting battle all make for another intriguing book and I, for one, can’t wait for book three.

Vianna is a legacy witch who ran from her history only to return and embrace her familiar demon to protect what is hers. Picking up about three months after the explosive events in the first book, Forgotten Ghosts shares with readers what comes next for Vianna.

Vianna, with her housemate Dee, has settled into a routine while carefully avoiding the Original Blood Coven and creating a tenuous truce with Shuck, her bonded demon. When a friend asks Vianna to check on his Hoodoo shop, she discovers odd ghosts lurking in the tunnels below the Salem businesses. Unfortunately, she also finds out that there are humans who know about her ability to see ghosts, some of whom don’t seem to have her best interests at heart.

Forgotten Ghosts is an excellent sophomore story from Cass Kay. Mostly urban fantasy with a touch of paranormal horror, the world and characters are engrossing and dark, yet there is some brightness as Vianna struggles to break from her family’s monstrous past. The author successfully builds upon the world she created in her first book by layering in details and complex emotions.

Vianna is a complicated heroine who goes against the grain, denying the passion to kill and amass power. Yet in order to protect herself and friends, she has taken on the mantle of the Root family’s power. Vianna lives in the gray; which makes the story so interesting. She is conflicted, trying to find her way, and I want her to succeed. But it’s not just Vianna, it’s those around her. I love that there are some straight up bad guys, a few genuinely good guys, but mostly lots and lots of gray ones in between. Vianna struggles to trust, and seeing her try to open up to Dee and eventually Shuck is wonderful. But there is a lot of tension because you never know if someone will turn on Vianna. There is also a little bit of an Angel/Buffy vibe with Officer Grayson Elliott, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

In the end, Forgotten Ghosts is a wonderful follow up story in the Legacy Witches series. I really hope the author continues this well-written, captivating series.

This book, which I had been eagerly awaiting after finishing the wonderful first novel, was compulsively readable. I got almost nothing else done because all I could do was read! There are so many elements of growth for many of the characters: power struggles, letting go of fear, acceptance of others, learning to trust. This growth takes place in both individuals and within groups. Spending more time in this world & with these characters is a gift. This book made me realize how much I relate to the protagonist on a deep, emotional level, which is unusual for me. There was highly satisfactory resolution of several main conflicts, with enough left unresolved to make me eager for the next book. The book may be technically horror, but with so much emotional depth and humor, it really needs its own category. (Especially since I would be the first to tell you that I don't like horror!)

This was such a good sequel to the first book! Cass Kay writes so well, everything she describes I can perfectly visualize everything that's happening. I love our main cast of characters, and I can't wait to see what happens with Vivianna's new love interest. Shuck has a special place in my heart, I love all of his shenanigans and think it's pretty adorable that he loves to get swept with a broom.

Forgotten Ghosts has given me the best spooky vibes. It's like a supernatural cozy horror, there are demons, and ghosts, and all kinds of spooky/weird things going on but it's also a place I love coming back to and one I wish was real so I could visit! Forgotten Ghosts has jumped to my favorites list right alongside Legacy Witches, and I can't wait to read them both again while I wait for the next one! and after that epilogue, I hope we get it soon.

This book was a lot of fun. I will say that I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first, but it is still a solid book in the series. The epilogue at the end really set it up for a book three, and I am excited for it! I can’t wait. If you are looking for some more spooky writing then you should read this one. Cass Kay write in such a relatable way, and everything feels so realistic despite being about witches an ghosts. I will continue to recommend this book to people who are looking for a fantastic witchy read.

Thank you so much to a Cass Kay, @casskaywrites for this arc in exchange for an honest review. Grab yourself a copy April 25th!

Forgotten Ghosts is a great continuation of Vianna's story from Legacy Witches. This time, Vianna has to contend with more legacy coven BS, learning to trust Shuck - her bound demon, and ghost hunters all while navigating being life, being a solitary witch and some unexpected people from her past. Dee remains a wonderful addition to the story and is a perfect contrast to Vianna's character.

I am definitely looking forward to more entries in this series! If you enjoy supernatural fantasy, witches, demons, ghosts, mystery, transgender representation, magic and all things Salem, I definitely recommend this series.

This is my second read by Cass Kay. The first book in this series, Legacy Witches, ended up being one of my top 5 favorite reads from 2022. I absolutely loved it. So I’m not surprised by how obsessed I was with this one. It’s flawless and the perfect follow up.

Vie is such a strong female lead and pairing her with Dee was just brilliant. They compliment eachother so well. I really enjoyed seeing how much their friendship has grown in this book.

That epilogue really has me dying for a third book, the wait is going to be excruciating.

While I overall enjoyed this book, it definitely needed a little polish. I did get it for free due to a printing error on book one, and it has a note about being an ARC at the beginning so that explains all the typos.

Outside of that, I was missing some of the tangled family relationships from the first one. I liked Vianna interacting with the covens, and it felt a little empty here with James being the antagonist instead.

Grayson was cuter in book one even tho this book spent a weird amount of time talking about his tight shirts.

(4.5/5 stars)

Forgotten Ghosts by Cass Kay is an urban fantasy novel with horror elements and the second book in the Legacy Witches series.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Legacy Witches, which was the author's debut. One of my main criticisms of the first book was that the plot could have been tightened up a bit, which I can say they did with the second book.

This one was still a run read, partly because I really enjoy the worldbuilding. The magic system is pretty cool, and though it's set in Salem it feels pretty different from other books about Salem witches.

Good queer rep continues with Dee, a transwoman and daughter of the coven librarian. In their society magic is matrilineal; I've been really excited to see Dee grow into her craft.

We also see Vianna grow into herself and what she wants to do and be. We also meet someone who might be a romance opportunity.

If you were a fan of Charmed or more especially Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you may want to try out this self-published series.

I enjoyed this book so much. The witchiness, the autumnal vibes, the pissed off ghosts, the trickster demon Shuck, wittyAF Dee, hunky Grayson, sistah Ophelia, and last but not least…the diabolical and terrifying Csada LaGuerre (great name for an Uber-villain). Unfortunately, IMO Vianna’s character is less interesting than the others. Maybe that will change in the next book, or subsequent books in the series.

What a great follow up to Legacy Witches. I loved seeing more of Vie and Dee and the pacing of the story was excellent. The whole book was well written and unlike others in the genre that just have eye rolling moments, this had not a single one.

I'm absolutely looking forward to the next in the series. If you liked Legacy Witches, you'll absolutely be a fan of this book.

Forgotten Ghosts

I enjoyed this book so much that I plan to read book one out of sequence for the plain enjoyment. Cass Kay really wrote a complex story and filled in all the personalities of the paranormal friends to make it fun! Thank you!

I've read it 5 times, I absolutely love it! Cass Kay is my favorite author, she really draws you in to the story. It's like your there. I have only one complaint, there are only 2 books, I'd buy and read 10 if there were more! Anxiously waiting for more sequels, Vianna is my sister now!

I read this right after Legacy Witches. They're not super corny like I feared, the ghosts are fantastic, & the friendship between Dee & Vianna is lovely. Can't wait for the 3rd book

This is the second book in the Legacy Witches series and a great follow up to the first book. Vianna is learning how to bond with Shuck, the family familiar and also finding her place as a solitary witch. The characters are solid, and the descriptive writing will transport you. The haunted house that Vianna lives in with her friend Dee sounds so awesome and creepy I want to be right there with them. The bits of humor interspersed through the story are great.

Cass Kay delivers another action packed mystery in Forgotten Ghosts. The second book of her Legacy Witches series takes us deeper into the ever chaotic world of Vianna Roots. Full of ghosts, witches and other supernatural beings, Kay does a phenomenal job building the magical world of modern day Salem. Follow along as Vianna tries to build a life for herself outside of the murderous legacy of her ancestors.

This time around, it seems that everyone from Vianna's past is showing up to demand her help. It starts off with a simple favor from her old friend Tuck and ends with a whole crew of wannabe ghostbusters on her trail. Even the local sheriff is asking her to join forces with him. For a loner who was hoping for a simple life Vianna sure has a knack for attracting both friends and foes, as well as a fair amount of danger.

I loved this book, maybe even more than the first. Kay sets a quick pace paired with an eerie vibe that kept me engaged and my pages turning. There's never a dull moment in this series so far. As she spins her tale, Kay does a fantastic job laying out pieces for the next puzzles to come. These books are so fun I can't wait to continue on with series to see where Vianna goes next. As much as I love these books, I think my kids would love them even more. I think the content of these book would be suitable to kids as young as 4th grade. I would recommend these books to adults and kids alike.

I received a free advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I am choosing to leave my honest review here voluntarily.

Amazing!

This series is by far my favorite series of the year. I love the characters. The bits of tension. The hope. I hope more is coming, but even if not this was amazing. Found family is one of my favorite things to read and this has that in spades. I’m enjoying how much Vie is growing. If you like witches and demons, you for sure need to read this.
