Separated from the woman he loves, Varin struggles to catch up with the speed of war, magic, and betrayal. A realm away from what he desires most, he must decide what is most important to him: sanity under the veil of love, or power under the veil of solitude.
ALLEGIANCES TURNED...
With the Firstborn resurrected, Varin forms an allegiance with old and new faces, rousing the alliances of powerful men all across Denzethea. When word of war bleeds red, he realizes he can't ignore his fate any longer.
A CROWN TAKEN
Eyes set on a crown that is not his, Varin fights against mortal men and women with magic that the world had not seen for over three-hundred years.
With power at his side, he will never have to sit idly by while those he loves most die.
This was an excellent read. I love when characters descend into madness. 😂 I loved the addition of a few new characters and I’m so excited to see what happens in book 5!
(I hope Cateline and Caius kill Varin & live HEA loooool)

This book was everything I needed that I didn’t know. Fajohn gave us a dark villain era origin story wrapped up in the timeline running with Cat’s book in A Curse of Death and Time.
We are shown, yet again, that all magic comes with a cost and we get a really good look into how it will consume someone if you let the darkness take over.
Also… I just want to say… I freaking love Percy. And I freaking love Helyx. He’s so swoon worthy, even if it isn’t in the same way as a certain God of Time *cough cough*. But seriously. I loved the deeper look we got into our Book Keeper in this book. Percy’s character growth was so on point, too.
I have nothing bad to say about it. Nothing. I think this has earned a spot as my third fave book of B. C. Fajohn’s, right under TCODAT and ACOAAS.
I knew I wasn't prepared for book four, but I WAS NOT prepared for what Varin was going to go through in this book. I could not put this book down, it had me in a chokehold the entire time I was reading it.
Without a doubt, this book was absolutely brilliant and made my heart soar, drop, jump, and squeeze at all the emotions I was put through during this book. I cannot wait for more Runed Series books because ugh, I need more Varin so so badly.
Thank you so much for an early copy B, this was honestly the highlight of my April reading!
Oh My goodness this book had me breaththless in anticipation. Most of this review is the same as Death and Time because i did read in tandem. This one is It's Varins story and can be read in tandem with book three the Curse of Death and Time. And to do that which I highly recommend go to her website to get the chapter list. So much to read and find out. And that ending oh man that ending was so good and if your reading the tandem guide it's not over there go to chapter 36 and 37 of book 3 for the rest and it just makes me so excited for bk 5
3.5/5, I've read the entire rest of this series and have seriously loved it. Varin's story was definitely different and not entirely my personal cup of tea but still an enjoyable "love to hate" storyline. He's clearly been through a lot. It did feel a bit slow at times, but I'm excited to see what's next in store for these characters.
Simply put this book shows Varin’s turmoil over losing a friend and his beloved. How he descends into darkness without seeing the bigger picture… now I am ready for Cat to kick some sense into him.
