Make one stupid bet and suddenly you’re fake dating your hot new neighbor...
There is nothing like hiding a secret identity from your roommate besties to complicate... everything. And when they decide I need a love life makeover, I can’t tell them why I don’t have time for their schemes.
Retirement home nurse by day, lead singer of a rock band by night. Not on the schedule? Men. I’d rather cuddle with Bernice, the hangry boa next door.
I can’t think of an excuse fast enough to get out of betting my prime parking space against them finding me true love, but luckily, they pick the worst possible guy for me.
Sure, our new neighbor, Josh, is hot, but he’s from an Austin family whose money is so old, it’s dusty. Been there, done that, and I’m not going back to be broken again by a man just like my ex.
This bet is as good as won.
The thing is, Josh isn't easy to shake, especially after he discovers my rock 'n' roll alter ego.
When a fake dating agreement, a cursing parrot, and our late-night balcony talks lead to kisses so hot they melt me, I’m forced to decide: can I gamble my heart on a society guy who is expected to settle down with someone exactly not like me?
✎𓂃“You’re my favorite person in the world. You’re my best friend, and I’m better for knowing you.”
Sami Webster: nursing home RN by day, Lady Mantha of Pixie Luna, rock goddess by night 👩🎤 Josh Brower: rich boy legacy lawyer, music lover, and Sami’s hunky new next door neighbor. Despite their attraction, both have full plates and then some, but Sami’s roommate Ruby has another idea in store. The bet? That Ruby can put her matchmaking skills to use and find Sami true love by New Year’s. If she wins? Sami’s prime-location parking spot in their crazy hectic parking lot goes to Ruby 🚗
Sami willingly accepts–she doesn’t have time to fall in love?? Not with her secret band and how it’s taking off. And Josh? He works nearly 80 hours a week trying to impress his dad at the law firm, where does a relationship fit? After a fake dating scheme and getting to know Josh a bit better though, Sami just might find that all bets are off.
☆Quick Glimpse: 🤘Bet between friends 🤘Fake dating 🤘Boy next door 🤘Secret life 🤘Socioeconomic differences 🤘Found family, high parental expectations 🤘He falls first 🤘Dual POV 🤘Closed door, kissing only 🤘No 3rd act breakup
☆My Thoughts: Cute is the best word I can use to describe this! I loved every moment Sami was on stage with her band, she is such a powerful presence and her confidence radiated off the page. The way she so wholeheartedly believed in herself and manifested her goals was inspiring, not just for Mr. Corporate Josh, but for myself as well.
✎𓂃“My mom needs me to be sepia because it makes her feel safe. Bryce the Weasel needed me to be sepia so he could shine. But tonight, I was glitter and gowl and manic energy, and there will be no turning back.”
Her band and songs still give me the punk rock vibe vs. straight up rock (which she vehemently argues), but it was still so fun. Sami’s friends/roommates were the best supporting characters, and I’m excited to see each story from this found family. Ruby’s matchmaking ain’t done yet (side note: i need her to be real so she can use her abilities on meeee 😅)!
The way Josh shows up for Sami and reassures her melted my cold, black heart ❣️ Sami frustrated me to no end with how she let her past dictate her actions, no matter how understandable. We all have different backgrounds and circumstances, it’s how we learn from these aspects and each other that allows us to fully love.
But eventually, I appreciated how the characters opened up to each other so honestly. It showed all the growth and maturity, bc we all know I HATE miscommunication.
Definitely a sweet, cheesy HEA that had a surprising amount of depth for a shorter novel (though maybe a bit too much packed in–that "quick glimpse" be a bit long lol). The writing style wasn’t my favorite, but I appreciated the com part of this romcom. And I am biased, but I give all my stars to Josh’s cute Grandpa Jim, bc I also have a Grandpa Jim irl, and he’s the absolute best 💗💫
☆A Few Quotes: ✎𓂃“Sami Webster is a girl who knows how to leave her mark.”
✎𓂃“If anything, you’ve given me clarity, okay? I’m not going anywhere…But I’m not the entitled kid I was. And watching you chase down your goals has been making me think about mine. You’re true to yourself, Sami. I’m learning from that.”
✎𓂃“Petite women get called cute all the time. Adorable is even worse. Like we’re kittens or pixies…Adorable doesn’t suggest sexiness or love vibes. It suggests pats on the head and cuddles.” ⤷Yes I am 5 ft. NEVER pat me on the head, call me adorable, or pick me up. The Aries energy will come for you 😈
------------ pre-review: a fmc who’s a nursing home rn by day, and a secret rockstar by night?? 👩🎤🤘 ok this HAS to be cute right?? let’s hope she makes up for my mediocre reading streak 🙏
Another absolute hit from Melanie Jacobson!! I was invested in this story and the cast of characters from the very first page and couldn't put the book down!
Set in Austen, Texas, this is the first in a new series that follows a group of four female roommates and the new guy, Josh who moves in next door. This book focuses on Sami, a Nurse Coordinator in a Old age home by day and a secret front woman for a rock band at night using the persona, Lady Mantha.
Recently burned by a rich ex-boyfriend, Sami has sworn off guys and is dedicated to pursuing her music. Roommate, Ruby makes a bet that she can find all the girls their true matches by the end of the year. Sami is skeptical, especially since the price is her coveted parking spot but she agrees to try.
When Ruby chooses Josh, the new neighbor who is seemingly everything Sami isn't interested in (a rich, workaholic lawyer), she's surprised to discover some undeniable chemistry. After a first date though Sami only wants to be friends but some fake dating and big gestures from Josh make it really hard for her to deny they just might have a future after all.
Full of found family, quirky characters, complicated family relationships and truly, the sweetest slow-burn romance ever. I can't recommend this book enough and I'm already eagerly awaiting the next books in the series!!
Many thanks to the author for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
What a fun book! I love Sami's rock star persona and the release she finds there creatively and emotionally. Poor Josh doesn't stand a chance since he has the same privileged upbringing as Sami's ex who inspired her angry-girl-rock lyrics. I loved his humility and determination to pursue her in long-game style, waiting for her to be ready for him, all while showing her how he can bet here for her in the ways that are most meaningful to her. Sami and Josh both have their emotional baggage, and they help each other slowly unpack it and let go during their lovely friendship and rocky romance full of chemistry and frustrating tension. I just gotta say, the scene with the snake Josh is baby-sitting is one of my favorites this year! Fans of rom-coms with depth won't want to miss this book!
Disclosure statement: A complimentary copy of this book was provided from a tour group, publisher, publicist, or author, including NetGalley, OR was borrowed from the library, including OverDrive, OR borrowed from Kindle Unlimited, OR purchased. I enjoyed this book so much. It turned out to be what I needed when it dropped in my inbox and I stayed up way too late to finish it because I was loving every page.
Josh and Ruby has great chemistry from the get-go. I looooved the banter. I found myself smiling and swooning and when a few fake dating antics got thrown in I was INVOLVED. Little heated glances, the small touches, leaning in to whisper in someone’s ear? GIMME ALL OF IT. This had a very natural flow to the relationship with some push and pull, but ultimately realizing a HEA is in front of you.
Even when I found myself a little frustrated with how Sami was allowing past issues to completely fuel her decisions in the present I did see a lot of growth. Sami allowed herself to be open about her fears, spoke to others and even did some big gestures of her own to show Josh she’s as invested as he is. Josh definitely fell first (my fav) and I adore a guy who shows up, regardless of what that means.
And I thought the plot was fun. I’m hit/miss on music themes and I thought this was wonderfully written. I wanted to see the best for Sami and loved her level headedness about following her dreams and making those happen. It’s a great book. It’s super swoony, it’s on the lighter side and it’s perfect for spring time.
Overall audience notes: - Contemporary Romance - Language: very little - Romance: kisses - Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a grandparent, multiple mentions of older people passing away (Sami works as a nurse at a care facility), brief mention of going to rehab, absent father
So much fun! Loved that Sami was an up and coming rock star. Just loved Josh. From start to finish. This was happy place reading for me. The perfect, romantic distraction. 💙💙
Betting on the Boy Next Door ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Romance Format: Physical Book Date Published: 3/02/23 Author: Melanie Jacobson Publisher: Independent GR: 4.39
I requested a digital advanced readers copy from Melanie Jacobson and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
My Thoughts: Melanie Jacobson is becoming one of my favorite Indie Romance authors. Pretty much if I see her name, sign me up! I was fortunate to obtain a physical book prior to release date to read and review. Due to our move, my reviews are a little behind. This is the first in the series Betting On Love. You have Sami, living with her roommates and Josh, the boy next door in a meet cute, not so cute, spar to love in Austin, Texas. They originally go on a date because Ruby, roommate, made a bet over her parking space and things just bud from there. I just loved their story and budding relationship. I cannot wait for this series to fully develop.
The story is narrated in a dual POV by both Sami and Josh, my favorite kind of POV, as you can really understand both sides of the relationship. This follow the tropes of forced proximity, fake dating, enemies to lovers, and the boy next door. Sami is nurse by day and punk rock star by night. Sami is fierce, loyal, and worldly independent. Sami is a nurse but really wants her band to take off and do that full time. Josh is a lawyer, portrays typical boy next door, compassionate, and kind. While Josh comes from money, he doesn’t flaunt his wealth. Their banter was truly fabulous and the frustrating tension was incredible, it really built up the story. The characters were very well developed, fleshed out, had witty banter, amazing chemistry, and just brilliantly written. The author’s writing style was complex, multifaceted (some degree of subplots), humorous, spicy, and just brilliant.
This was a fabulous read. While a slow burn romance, it was sweet and heartwarming. I highly recommend not only this book, but any book by Jacobson. She has a way of pulling you into the story and you just get lost in the words. I do believe this is a start to a series and I cannot wait for the other books with each of the roommates. Go pick this up today. The ebook is available on KU.
💕forced proximity 💕fake dating 💕the boy next door 💕he falls first
Y’all I officially have a new book boyfriend🥰!
The banter between Sami and Josh was top notch. I SWOONED over Josh. Their back and forth was quick, witty, and freaking hilarious.
Lots of good tropes in this one! Sami makes a bet with her roommates- if she falls in love with the cute new neighbor - she loses her most prized possession - a guaranteed parking spot at their condo. The chemistry is obvious. The attraction is palpable. Only one problem - Josh comes from one of those old money Texas families and Sami is afraid she doesn’t fit the mold.
Despite all of Sami’s efforts, Josh persists and desperately tries to win her over. There is so much depth to this story - and I truly loved the balance of dealing with past relationship trauma, pressure from parents, and the steady but assured way Josh tries to win Sami’s heart.
👏🏼👏🏼 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙 to readers who enjoy sweet romance with excellent banter and lots of tension.
I got this book during one of the Stuff Your Kindle Days and this cover looked cute and fluffy which is what a girl needs sometimes. It was a very quick but enjoyable read.
This book has two points of view. The first is Sami, she is a retirement home nurse by day and a lead singer of a rock band by night. What is not on the schedule? Men. She would rather cuddle with Bernice, the hangry boa next door. She can’t think of an excuse fast enough to get out of betting her prime parking space against her roommates finding Sami a true love, but luckily, they’ve picked the worst possible guy for her. The boy next door. Sure Josh might be good-looking, but he’s from an Austin family whose money is so old, it’s dusty. Sami has bene there and done that and she is not going to be broken by a rich man again. The second point of view is Josh, he is working his butt off to prove to his parents that he is not like he was in his college days. Even if he works 80 hours a week and has only just moved out. He was expecting to work his butt off until he has his father approval. What he didn’t expect was the night owl who is like him and leads a double life. During dinner with his family and his father’s best friend, he lets it slip that he is dating someone new so now he must recruit his neighbour into playing his fake girlfriend and soon he starts getting real feelings for his fake girlfriend.
This book was so cute, and I love the characters. I love Ruby and how much of a matchmaker she is and how sneaky she can be. I love the girls personality and how they are all build differently that you can tell too differently and not all the same plain janes. Josh took a while to grow on me because of the cocky, I don’t want to talk about feeling kinda character. He managed to redeem himself in the end and I was rooting for him all the way. I love dual POV within romance books, it makes it so much better. I love the old dears in this book – Sami's grandma and Josh’s grandpa, I would love for them to have a friendship and hopefully we see them again in the series.
The only thing that stopped it from being five star is that Ruby practically fixed everything. I would love for Josh and Sami to have used their own heads sometimes. Plus, the repeated information and the slight miscommunication just irked me a bit.
This book had no smut, but it was very enjoyable without it and a change in pace to what I usually read, and I can’t wait to see how Ruby plays matchmaker again.
- Slow Burn - Fake Dating - No 3rd act breakup - Secret Rockstar - He falls first - Dual POV
This is book 1 in the Betting on Love series. It follows Sami and Josh. Sami is a nurse who lives a secret double life as a rockstar, Josh is her new neighbor. Sami’s roommate, Ruby, bets her that she can find her perfect boyfriend and that she will fall in love in exchange for Sami’s parking spaces. Sami who had a horrible breakup a year prior is guarding her heart and doubts Ruby can pull it off, so she doesn’t fear the bet. But Josh keeps showing up time after time.
This was such a cute and heartwarming story. I love Melanie Jacobsons writing style. She created very interesting and well rounded main characters and side characters. This book was laugh out loud funny and beautifully sweet.
This has Hannah Montana, double life as a rockstar vibes and I loved it!
I loved the dual POV because we got to see how dedicated Josh was. A lot of guys would give up when the girl they liked (and only just met) turned them down over and over again. But you can tell he understood something else was causing it because anyone could tell Sami liked Josh.
I kind of wished the topic of Presley came up again. It was such a big plot point to start the fake dating, but then after was never mentioned again. I think it would’ve been interesting for Josh’s parents to bring up Presley at the end when they disapproved of Sami and to see him fully shut them down.
Betting on the Boy Next Door is the start of a new series for Melanie Jacobson and I loved it! Ruby almost stole the show for me. She was super fun, sweet and the mom of the group. But then I got to know Sami and Josh more, and although Ruby was a fav, Sami and Josh took over! Their backstories were well written and the timing of their reveals were also well done. I loved the balcony chats. Their car ride on the way to the country club was one of my favorite parts, closely followed by the fake date at said country club. Grandma Letty and Grandpa Jim were superb. I loved the advice and direction and guidance they gave Sami and Josh. Those were some of my favorite scenes. Once I got midway through, I couldn’t stop reading. I received an eARC from the author. All views and opinions expressed are my own.
Absolutely adored Sami and Josh, and this fun story hit all the right notes for me!
I loved how sassy and independent Sami was, but still such a sweet and caring friend, granddaughter, and nurse. And her moonlighting gig as a singer with a Pat Benatar vibe… yes, please!
Josh was such a sweetheart! He’s married to his work as a lawyer in his father’s firm, and works harder than anyone to prove he’s not that same reckless boy he once was. He’s also out to prove to Sami that she can absolutely count on him.
Things I really loved— 💕 Fake dating to the real thing 💕 Fun dialogue and banter 💕 Late-night balcony talks 💕 Swoony romance and kisses 💕 Secondary characters who steal the show 💕 Ahab the cursing parrot 💕 BF who wants to see his GF fly 💕 Growth and depth of both MCs 💕 Grand gestures
This is an excellent start to a new series, and I’m excited for the other roommate’s stories!
* Clean read that contains some mild swearing
Many thanks to @melaniejacobson_books for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
The First Book in the New Series - Betting on Love – by Melanie Jacobson!
An adorable, witty, and enjoyable rom com! I love how Melanie’s writing is fun and relatable. You are immediately taken into the story that feels like you are listening to and reading about a real-life couple. There were so many one liners that had me smiling or laughing!
The story follows Sami – nurse by day and rock band singer by night – and Josh – the hot new neighbor lawyer by day and by night. I love the set up with Sami and the three other roommates sharing their condo and how their friendship is a theme in the book. Ruby, one of the roommates, makes a bet that her matchmaking skills will find her roommates love and she is starting with Sami and the new neighbor.
The immediate chemistry between Sami and Josh is wonderful and real. They both have insecurities that they work through to pursue their feelings and a relationship with each other. I love how they work to communicate with each other and how they support each other and embrace their true selves. Sami and Josh both have a side to themselves that they try to hide from people, and I loved how they healed and gained confidence in going after what they love. Oh my! The ending! Too cute and spot on for both characters.
I cannot wait to see where this series goes. The book has a great set of supporting characters and I hope they all get to have their time to shine! Cannot wait to see more of the salty parrot, the roommate besties, quirky and fun grandparents, and bets on love. I cannot wait to see what happens with Niles! IYKYK Also, I would LOVE to see more of the Hangry Red Tail Boa in the stories!
If you cannot guess by now, this is a fun read and enjoyable read. It will make you want to hang out on the porch with your besties, slip on a pair of Doc Martens, and turn up the volume with some rock music!
Go get your copy from Amazon (also on Kindle Unlimited) and follow Melanie Jacobson for more sweet rom coms!
Content Info: Genre: Contemporary Romance Format: eBook Rating: 4 Stars Reader Notes: • Romance: Kisses • Just a little language • !!! – Loss of grandparent and death of older people mentioned, mentions rehab.
I was provided an eARC from the Author in exchange for an honest review. Views and opinions stated are my own.
This RomCom is everything! Jacobson easily had me laughing out loud and smiling. I found myself devouring this story. I couldn’t get enough of Sami, Josh, Ruby, Ava, and Madi! I adored Grandpa Jim and Grandma Letty. Can she adopt me too? The bet between Sami and Ruby is an awesome part of the entire story. I loved the deeper emotional family side as well. Figuring out who you and what you really want. This isn’t just another run of the mill RomCom. This has it all! Depth, emotion, laugh out loud moments, and romance (the clean kind) with smoking hot chemistry. I found myself grinning from ear to ear while reading this book. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series! I hope Jacobson hurries and writes it quickly *please*, I need more of these amazing friends! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this charming and amusing story. Madi and Josh were delightful characters, with Madi being incredibly intelligent and talented while Josh was charming and kind. Together, they helped each other overcome their struggles and found love and acceptance. It's great to witness the friendship and romance grow between Madi and Josh, as well as the dynamics within their family. Additionally, the story inspires one to pursue their dreams., This story was absolutely adorable and one of my favorites. The plot was perfectly executed, and the chemistry between the characters was undeniable from the beginning. Although there were some conflicts, they were minor and didn't last long. Overall, it was a quick read with characters I loved and rooted for right from the start. Content..sweet romance, kissing only.
There was never a time during this WHOLE book when I was unhappy. Everything about this book was perfect, and now I know why the rating is so good. I’m not sure if this author is popular, but on one side she needs to be, and on the other, I don’t want her to bc I want to gatekeep her. Melanie Jacobson, I love you for this.
Sami, nurse by day, secret lead singer of a rock band at night, starts a bet to see if she can fall in love with a man her friend picks out. This man turns out to be Josh, a rich, hot, neighbor of Sami. At first, Sami doesn’t think she’ll be able to fall in love, but after many late night talks with Josh, she starts to think otherwise.
Sami is such a delight !! I love her so. freaking. much. Her being a secret lead singer is honestly so cool. I love how she channels her emotions into music, it’s so impressive. Being able to see inside her brain when she’s singing, making lyrics, connecting with her bandmates, etc is so interesting. I’m trying to use better words, but it’s the middle of the night and all I know is that I love this book. Her attitude and quick reactions to situations and jabs (when they’re humorous or scolding) gives me Lorelai Gilmore vibes. Her demeanor is so amusing, and I. Love. Her.
Josh is such husband material. New book bf ! But seriously, I love him, too. The character development we get to see is awesome. He had a past he’s ashamed of, so he got back up and flipped. Completely. He’s also very determined and straightforward, which, to me, is a good thing. He works so hard to prove that he’s changed, while also finding the time to keep himself healthy by working out. You can’t not respect that. Josh is truly such an inspirational person, who isn’t a complete ass. I mean, looking at him, he comes from a wealthy family with a background. That makes you think “yeah, he’s definitely a spoiled brat”, but no, he’s attitude and actions show that he’s far past that, especially near the ending of the book. Josh is amazing, definitely husband material.
Sami and Josh’s relationship is so cute. I was swooning during so many scenes. I loved how Josh never gave up on Sami. That makes him seem like a guy who can’t take the hint, but it wasn’t like that. My words can’t even start to explain, so I guess you have to read the book 🤷♀️ Josh going to about every single one of Sami’s performances was so adorable. Like, just imagine ! Also, this author did a GREAT job to make sure that the conversations were actually human-like. The amount of times character have the most unrealistic conversations.. Sami and Josh’s energies just matches up so perfectly. The chemistry was oozing from the pages ! Such a good feeling to be able to, well, feel the good energy from characters.
Sami’s relationships with her besties so fun. The way i could feel the sorority vibes from my kindle was incredible. I can’t wait to see all of their romances in the sequels !!
Overall, this book was freaking amazing. I loved every single part of it, and that says a lot as I haven’t given a genuine five star to a book in forever. I’m so glad I picked this book up ! Also, the cover is STUNNING. Sami looks so prettyyyy ! This review isn’t the best, but I hope it might’ve convinced you to pick it up. <33
I completely adored this heartwarming, witty, refreshingly original rom com 💗Melanie’s writing is so smooth and it drew me in from the very first page. It was so easy to fall in love with these characters and I did not want to put this book down!
𝘽𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙤𝙮 𝙉𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝘿𝙤𝙤𝙧 is the first in a new series about four female friends and roommates living in Austin, Texas. The first book follows Sami, a nurse by day and up and coming indie rock star by night, and Josh, the hot new neighbor.
To help her move on from a hurtful breakup, Sami’s roommate Ruby proposes a bet. If Sami falls in love with a guy that Ruby picks for her before the end of the year, Sami will give Ruby her coveted parking space. When Ruby chooses Josh, Sami feels an undeniable chemistry with him, but his wealth and background remind her too much of the ex who broke her heart. Josh is battling his own insecurities as well, but Sami is so true to herself and she inspires him to break out of his shell and fight for a life, and love, that he wants and deserves.
💖 The banter between Sami and Josh is PERFECTION. I just loved all the tension as they try to deny their amazing chemistry. The supporting characters bring so much depth to the story - from the quirky, supportive roommates, to the sassy, loving grandparents, and even the well-intentioned but critical parents. I also really enjoyed a look into the Austin music scene, and now I really want to visit!!
If you love witty rom coms with depth and heart, you are not going to want to miss this one!! Melanie Jacobson swept me off my feet with this sweet romance and I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
Thank you to the author for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!!
"This has got to be one of the dumbest situations l've ever gotten myself into. And I have a secret life as a wannabe rock star, so that's saying something."
Thank you Melanie Jacobson for this arc in exchange for my honest review! Betting On the Boy Next Door is available now!
I'm a nurse who wants to be a rock star-a secret I don't even tell my best friends and roommates. So when one of them-Ruby-gets it into her head to find me a man, can't explain why I don't have time for her matchmaking. Ruby turns it into a bet to make sure go along with it. I say yes, but won't matter. My ex taught me the most important thing about men: you can't count on them. When Ruby picks the worst possible guy for me, I know I've got this in the bag. Sure, our brand-new neighbor, Josh, is hot, but he's the privileged scion of an Austin family whose money is so old, it's dusty. Been there, done that, and I'm not going back. The thing is, Josh isn't easy to shake, especially not after he discovers my secret double-life. With the help of a fake dating scheme, a cursing parrot, and our late-night balcony talks, I'm starting to think he's a risk worth taking-even when all the evidence says I better run.
This was such a cute romcom! Melanie Jacobson has a talent for writing characters you’ll fall in love with. I loved the relationships Sami had with her friends and her grandma. Her banter with Josh made me laugh. Josh was a sweetheart and I loved how he immediately supported Sami’s dreams. I definitely recommend giving this one a read!
As a nurse by day and rockstar by night, Sami is used to hiding her true self, until her hot neighbour Josh flips her world upside down after he finds out about her secret rockstar lifestyle. They embark on a friends to lovers journey (throw in some fake dating) and realize that the person for them, might just be living next door.
Pure fluff. This was was low drama, low angst, and had the best cast of characters. All of Sami’s roommates were AMAZING and I need books for each of them NOW!!
Of course there were a few things I didn’t immediately love, I’m not the biggest fan of rockstar or singer romances but this grew on me!
Definitely recommend!
Thanks to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review! 🫶🏼🫶🏼
From next-door-boy to fake dating, this sweet romance is delightful and swoony. Readers will love the fun relationship between Sami and Josh and will enjoy seeing their friendship and romance blossom. This story is also about not letting life define you; go get your dreams. Such a cute story that readers will absolutely love!!!
This book was so refreshing. It's been weeks since I've found a book that makes me want to shove off productivity during my free time. The banter at the beginning hooked me in. Parts of it had me thinking of Gilmore Girls. It was so well done.
Y’all. This is fresh and solid and REAL. Jacobson is a master storyteller who keeps leveling up with each new series, and I canNOT wait to read the rest in this one.
Loved this new romcom by Melanie Jacobson! Betting on the Boy Next Door is a funny, sweet, rock n’ roll romcom with witty dialogue, heartfelt romance, and lovable characters you want to cheer for. It’s a fun, he-fell-first, fake dating, hidden identity, next door neighbors romance that completely pulled me in.
Sami is a rest home nurse by day and the secret rock n’ roll lead singer for Pixie Luna by night. When a new guy moves in next door, Sami’s roommate Ruby makes a bet she can’t refuse. Sami’s sure she’ll be able to resist the charms of the handsome attorney who’s from one of Austin’s prestigious families. After all, her ex boyfriend who broke her heart was also from a prestigious family and reinforced her mother’s teachings that she can’t rely on a man. So, despite the obvious attraction between them, Sami does her best to resist.
Josh wants his family to believe he’s changed. In the past, he resented his parents’ planning his life, down to choosing his college classes and expecting him to join his father’s law firm. Despite his previous feelings though, he’s found he likes being an attorney, and has worked hard to prove he can do the job. When his parents and their old friends try to push him into a relationship, he turns to his beautiful, intriguing, next door neighbor to pretend be his fake girlfriend in exchange for much needed cash for her up and coming band. But, when Josh wishes their relationship was anything but fake, will he convince Sami he’s not like her ex?
This darling comedy had me laughing, smiling, and swooning. Sami and Josh have undeniable chemistry. Their magnetic attraction is palpable and holy cow, there are some amazing, smoldering kisses between them. I loved their banter and the restaurant scene where Sami goes toe to toe with the would be girlfriend.
Josh falls first, but he’s pretty irresistible and his grand gesture has a way of winning Sami’s heart. Sami makes her own grand gesture proving she really understands Josh and loves him right back. The rock n’ roll scene was fun especially when the frat boys come to support. I only wished I could have heard Sami’s songs. The side characters were endearing, especially Grampa Jim, Grandma Letty, and Sami’s roommates. I’m excited for the next book in the series!
It’s a fun, clean, romantic romcom I definitely recommend. Content: a few mild swear words, mild innuendo, kissing make outs only, mentions of alcohol and drug use portrayed in a negative light. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author but also purchased a copy from Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are completely my own and voluntarily given.
dnf @ 15% (might continue reading since i like torturing myself but i already went further than this book deserved.) the dialogue was cheesy and cringey. the characters had no depth. there was barely any chemistry. the characters are in their 20s yet acted the opposite. I CANNOT STRESS ON THE CRINGE. josh disgusted me from the first chapter. i can’t imagine liking the characters. the pop culture references were disgusting.
examples: • “There’s no way I can say no.” - yes you can josh. you’re almost thirty. you can say no to being disrespected.
• “And yes, Meghan Trainor, she made me look.” - this is what made me stop. the writing is trashhhh.
• “Cheers to cookies,” I say. He’s close enough to lean over and tap his cookie to mine. “I’ll eat to that.” - cheesy dialogue again.
• “And that’s the problem. I hold back a scoff. Fiji—Phi Gamma Delta—is the most elite UT fraternity.” - she’s in her mid-twenties and is judging a person based off their frat? ok….

ok. i went back and finished it. my mind hasn’t changed. i’ve read a lot of books where the characters didn’t have chemistry, but i think this is one of the worst. they had potential and i was disappointed. extremely. they would’ve been better as friends. the chapters were also so long for no reason? irrelevant information was constant. i couldn’t tell why they even liked each other. i’m sure you guys do sm for each other but is that it? if that’s what you get off on, cool. i don’t.
Ok. This was absolutely adorable. I liked both the main characters from the beginning, and then you add in a fake dating trope? Swoon. Add in character arcs about doing what is expected of you vs what you love, bets by roommates, witty banter, and eccentric lovable grandparents? I’m all in. I enjoyed every minute of this sweet romance.
Sami is a nurse who has been hiding something from her best friends (and roommates). She is the lead singer of a rock band in Austin, and they are starting to book shows. She doesn’t have time for, nor does she want romance. When her bestie bets her she would find her an awesome boyfriend she loves in one year, she thought it was an easy bet. Until her new neighbor shows up with his stupid one dimple smile.
