I received an E-book ARC edition of this novel in exchange for an honest review. The novel will be available on Amazon & Kindle Unlimited on February 20, 2025.
This slow-paced 230-page high angst, slow-burn MM Romance, is extremely heavy with strict religious upbringing and grief. Written in a duel POV, this emotionally and mentally triggering Contemporary novel follows two men from different worlds, dealing with their own trauma while trying to figure out how to live life fully and authentically. Please note Trigger Warnings before reading the novel.
--“Love Marry Work Produce Children Money Peace Be good Be smart Be successful And ignore how it crushed you"--
Jonah moves in with his cousin Martin, and roommate Lucien, to go to college to study agricultural science to help run the family farm. He was raised a religiously quiet and sheltered life. Living in a big city, he experiences a lot of firsts. Lucien is a struggling artist with 150% angst. Off the bat, you get the feeling he is struggling with something and is completely lost.
--When I painted, my world was in order. Reality blurred behind a thick layer of acrylic paint and became a reflection of my dark side.--
This is not your normal MM Romance. The structure is very different. There is no plot. It’s character forward and the trajectory is rough between dealing with a heavy religious character that self-flagellates himself for everything to another that self medicates himself to numb the loneliness and pain of the past. It is not an easy read. But with that said, it was written very well, with tough topics that were presented full forward and not shied away from.
The two MCs are on their own paths which cross and uncross throughout. Their chemistry is like when you mixed to elements together, and they stay stable for a minute and then lose control. Jonah’s attraction to Lu is wishy-washy with confusion because of his background. He challenges the mentality harshly even when his light bulb moment occurs.
--Lucien had me under his spell and I succumbed to him with the first little touch. He was a demon! And he looked like a damn angel!--
The spice was good but wasn’t prepared for most of it. It rubbed me the wrong way with so many people getting it on with one scene pretty violent. They were all written well, though. 2/5🌶. See Trigger Warnings!
The ensemble was a good supportive cast of characters that added either some fun or aggravation to the novel. Sheltered Jonah was thrown into Lucien and Martin’s established world with no parachute. With so many friends and new places, it’s pretty jarring for him. He does meet a friend of his own that’s constant throughout the book who helps open his eyes to how real world religion has to be more open minded.
It was a struggle for me to get through the book. A couple times I wanted to put it down and DNF because I wasn’t in the right mindset for the topic. Religion and alcohol are triggers for me. However, I pushed on and kept at it. The ending is abrupt. Like, OH, ITS OVER!
💜Happy Reading!🫶
