Dex’s book(s) were nothing like I’d thought they’d be. As I said in my review for Rust or Ride he’d been living with grief for so long (20+ books) I expected the angst levels to be way up there. But they’re just not. And in this conclusion to their romance I’m finding myself underwhelmed and for the first time reading this series I’m a little bored.
For me, the best thing about this book is the banter between the men of the MC. Every time they’re on page they shine. Jiggy, Rooster, Z, Teller and Wrath. Love, love, love. Add to that the series arc regarding National and who may be Priest’s successor, should he ever step down, and that’s a plot line I want to see play out.
Special mention goes to Swan, whose came as quite a welcome surprise.
End of the day this is a perfectly fine addition to the series. But it’s probably not a couple I’ll revisit.
Autumn Jones Lake's Agony to Ashes takes readers on an exhilarating ride through the world of the Lost King MC, delivering yet another stunning addition to the series. This is the second book in the Dax and Emily's duet, and the first book Rust or Ride must be read first to understand this second installment. As the 23rd book in the Lost King MC Series, this contemporary MC romance continues to showcase the author's talent for crafting complex characters, evocative storytelling, and heartfelt connections.
"You're mine. Today, tomorrow, two years from now. It doesn't matter. Mine."
The story revolves around Emily, a woman haunted by her past, and Dax, her unwavering and devoted MC Lost King. Emily's fear of commitment clashes with her deep love for Dax, and their journey toward a lasting relationship forms the heart of this story. In this tale of redemption and self-discovery, the reader is drawn into a world of passion, romance, and emotional growth.
"I'm done denying how much I love this man. His big, warm, solid body offers safety and protection. I hold onto him like I'll get carried away on the wind if I let go."
Told in dual POV, Lake's writing style is witty and engaging, effortlessly immersing readers in the characters' lives. Through skillful prose, she paints a vivid picture of the Lost King MC universe, filled with vibrant personalities and intricate relationships. Fans of the series will relish the opportunity to reconnect with beloved characters and witness the depth of the club's undying love and loyalty.
"There isn't anything I won't do for you."
Overall, Agony to Ashes is a must-read for fans of the Lost King MC Series. Autumn Jones Lake once again delivers a passionate and enthralling tale, showcasing the enduring power of love, loyalty, and the pursuit of happiness. Whether you're a longtime series follower or a newcomer seeking a thrilling contemporary MC romance, this book will captivate and leave you eager for more.
This is book 2 of a duet. Emily and Dex. It starts right where book 1 left off. I did find it a bit slow, I think the author was allowing us to catch up with club antics. But the first third is a bit mopey. They have split up and Emily's sister is recovering. There is no-one else for either in their time apart. Dex gets an offer from Swan, she is apparently someone he had something with in the past, I can't remember what, some at the club seemed to think they might have got together at the time. She is hoping as he has split from Emily that they could give it a try. He sees its not going to help him get over or get back with Emily and refuses. There is some other woman drama in Emily's face by the other woman.
A bit predictable pl9tline tbh but okay. Few breadcrumbs dropped for future characters.
HEA.

I will always recommend this series. But this story I felt was a little different. I thought there would have been more drama. The storyline with Emily’s fathers partner kind of died off. And I felt we never resolved the Swan issue. And where was the property patch? Why didn’t Emily visit the clubhouse more? We are missing her interaction with some of the ladies. Besides the couple of appearances we are missing the original ol’ ladies. I love Dex but honestly his and Emily’s story isn’t one that worked for me. It was my least favorite. My favorite part was the banter between the guys. It literally has me laughing out loud. I liked the possible spoilers about changes that could happen in the near future with National. So I’m looking forward to that. Anything to get more of Rock and Z back at upstate. Hopefully all that they suggested comes true. I want all my men in one spot. And none of them are allowed to leave lol

This story had so much potential but (as the last few books in this series) it fell short. The first 3/4 of this book felt drawn out and lacked any actual storyline relating to the main characters, and the ending was rushed and left me frustrated as it could have been wonderful. This series has so much potential, and the author has built a fun world, but I hope for the next books, she focuses more on the leads and their storyline.
If you haven’t started the Lost Kings MC series by Autumn Jones Lake, I can only ask you why? It’s like Sons of Anarchy but without the cheating. So there’s no downside!
Dixon “Dex” Watts has been my favourite King for a long long time. He battles it out for first place with Rock, Teller and Zero often; but there is something about this grouchy, loyal to a fault man that just does something for me.
Emily solidified herself as one of my favourite LOKI ladies. I see a lot of myself in her. She’s a parentified child who grew up to be one hell of a badassed woman with some trauma along for the ride.
Libby is the best little brat you could hope for in a story progresser and I loved getting to see the ladies and the men of books past rear their ugly heads again!
I feel like there’s still more Dex and Emily to come and I cannot wait for their next adventure!
There's no denying or hiding the fact that I'm a massive Autumn fan! But I'm also honest, and this latest book, part two of Dex and Emily, was once again downright awesome! Seriously, it was just so *sigh and swoon!!
Dex has always been one of the quieter ones of LOKI, we knew he was deep, honest, a good guy, smart, and that he had lost his wife and daughter many moons ago which left him quite closed off. But we also knew he would bring us to our knees - and oh boy he so did 😘🤤🥵🥰
Then we have Emily, his Firecracker! And that nickname definitely suits her. She's raised her younger sister for this past decade and worked her butt of too, she has fire in her, she's strong, protective, genuine and she made my heart melt!
These two together just gel, it's like the rest of the crew - they're all with the person that completes them and it makes me so freaking happy!
We still get a good catch up with the rest of the guys and gals which helps make the books. The banter between them all, the automatic protection, the fierce belief in each other and the fact that they're all so different yet the same is just undeniably heartwarming!
We do get a few surprises along the way, one of the characters in particular is now on my 'dont like pile'! 🤬 We also get wee eggs of what's to come and I can't wait!!!!!!!!! 🤗🤗
I really don't know what else to say, I love this series, I love the characters and I loved this book.
I devour anything that Autumn puts out into this world and this was no different. I loved every second of Emily and Dex's story. One of the many things i love about Autumn's writing is its so grounded and believeable i love that we get to see how each of the couples are doing and how they each have their own version of Happily Ever After just like in real life no two happily ever afters are the same. This addition to the Loki world was in one word Spectacular and the Spice was perfection. I can't wait to see what Autumn has in store for us next. This is my number one series i reccomend whenever and wherever i can.
Finally I was able to start and finish Dex’s book. I feel like I have waited forever for his story and it didn’t disappoint. I’ll be honest, earlier in the series, I was hoping Swan would be his “queen” but….after reading both books, I think Emily’s character was spot on for him. I do hope Swan finds her forever man.
As with the other books in this series, Mrs. Lake pulls me into the story and I just can’t put my kindle down. This was a great beach read. I’m looking forward to Jiggy’s story and finding out more about the lady who will tame him.
I loved every minute of reading Agony to Ashes, as I always do when reading a book by Autumn. The brothers makes me laugh so hard, but at the same time beeing so good to eachother. Buuut I can't help it, Emily just annoyed me a little to much at times. She is soo dramatic, negativt and a bit of a martyr. She also behaved like Libby is 5 years old, I get that she did it out of love. But she needed to let the girl do her on things and be 16. And she is not fair to Dex or the club, she is almost a little mean to Dex when he just wants to be with her. The last part of the book feels rushed, wish we could get more of their time together at the club and with the everyone of his brothers and their old ladys.
Again, such a slow, not alot happened kind of book but with a lot of words in it. Lengthy, detailed descriptions of clothing and food were just so unnecessary.
Romance trope: MC Series: Lost Kings MC Length: 522 pages
Plot: We ended the last book (Rust or Ride) with - although I don't know why I put spoiler tags because I can't imagine coming into this book without having read the previous one - hint, hint, go back to the beginning!! Dex has decided that he won't take no for an answer but he will give Emily a little bit of the time that she thinks she needs. They both have things going on but one thing is certain: Dex will come for his girl and they will figure things out.
Commentary: First, I noticed that Dex was still the same steady guy he's always been in all of the books. That hasn't changed even though Emily is driving him crazy in all possible ways. His character is solid.
Emily though. She drove me up the wall! For someone who can be so direct and dirty in her own right (think about her conversations with Serena about Grinder!), she is so shy and insecure about her place in Dex's life and heart. I found that contrast a little frustrating at times. Although, to be fair, if my husband worked at a strip club, I would probably feel the same. And certainly Swan didn't make things better with her sneaky self. But the funnier part of Emily's insecurity was that she was sure the people around Dex didn't like her, and I think that fed into her feelings, but when they were confronted with the idea that they had shown dislike toward her, they had an entirely different picture of what happened. For example, Emily was sure that Trinity (and the other girls, but Trinity especially) were mad at her when she went to the clubhouse, but Trinity was really surprised to hear that - she liked Emily. Willow felt the same way, even though Emily was sure she was getting a bad vibe from her at Crystal Ball. So even though a lot of readers (me, it was me) were really annoyed with the girls for not being more welcoming, we only got that from Emily's side and it turns out that was colored by whatever was going on in her own head. I felt Dex's frustration but also his patience with her as she worked through that; I'm definitely not going to be surprised if he hands over the reins of CB pretty soon.
I can't end this review without also mentioning the mess of a memorial service the clubs attended. From I loved this conclusion to Dex and Emily's story. My only complaint - and it's small - is that the ending felt a little jumbled to me. For example, at the end of chapter 44, they've decided to . I needed a little transition there. I figured it out, but it was jarring for a moment.
I cannot wait for the next book - I thought we were getting Jiggy's story next, but instead it will be Griff and Molly! That explains why he and Remy have been around so much in the last few books and hopefully this will see the official formation of the support club (and all the stories from those characters).

4.25 ⭐️ Dex & Emily’s duet was surprisingly wholesome and unexpectedly spicy in equal parts. I loved every minute of it.
Review
As per usual we picked up right where we left off, Dex & Emily are broken up but that doesn’t stop him from enlisting Trinny & Hope to go check on her and Libby. My love for the old ladies in the series is infinite!
They resolve things fairly quickly and we got to enjoy a lot of wholesome moments between the two of them. One of my favourite things was seeing Dex & Libby’s relationship blossom. They were the sweetest and him teaching her how to drive was everything.
My heart broke for Dex all over again after hearing the full story on what happened to Debbie and their baby. I’m glad we finally got to see him happy and in love. Emily was the perfect person for him and she deserved the thoughtfulness and devotion Dex showered her in. I do wish we got to see a little more of Juliet & Vapor though. Dex’s relationship with Juliet will forever be one of my favourites 🥹
The one thing I wasn’t a fan of was the weird direction AJL took Swan’s character. It felt like she was sick of people asking for Swan’s book and decided to turn her into a bitch so they’d stop. It just felt so out of character for her but if that’s how she felt Swan would behave then who am I to say otherwise. It was just a little upsetting after seeing how sweet she’d been for the past 21 books 🤷🏽♀️
Things really picked up in the backend of the book. The overarching storyline about National and all the other charters has me both nervous and intrigued. I’m still recovering from Z being forced to move downstate, I don’t know if I’ll ever recover if Rooster and Rock are forced into different positions as well! As long as Rock & Hope don’t leave upstate (I doubt he’d ever let that happen) then I should be fine… I can’t handle the family being torn apart any more than it already has been!
The set ups for both Griff & Molly and Jiggy & Margot on the other hand have me beyond excited!!! I’ve been waiting for Griff & Molly since we first got a glimpse at them and the fact that we’ll get to see more of them, Remy, Eraser & Ella and Vapor & Juliet makes me so happy! Jiggy is hands down one of my favourite characters and Margot is such an interesting addition, the fact that she scared him in this book is hilarious to me and I can’t wait to see their dynamic in full force! 🤍
Agony to Ashes is book 23 in the Lost King's MC Series. There were a handful of swoony moments as Dex can be quite charming. From his moments with baby Lincoln, his one on one time with Libby, to his attentiveness with Emily, he surly will have your ovaries exploding. He will also have your heart breaking when he finally reveals his past. And of course there is lots of laugh out loud moments with the classic LOKI banter we know and love. I enjoyed seeing the future support club peeps and the interaction with them and LOKI. I was a little bummed that we didnt see an appearance from Vapor and Juliette. But I am excited that Griff will be getting his book released next.
With that said, I'm rating this book a three out of five for me because I was feeling unsettled for a number of reasons. 1). I didn't feel Emily blossomed and felt that she actually went backwards in her growth. Dex named her Firecracker for a reason, and it wasn't just cause of her sass. We all have our vulnerable moments but her insecurities seemed to be never ending and her confidence diminished as time went on. This is the same woman who answered the door with a gun, ready to shoot Grinder if he was there to cause Serena trouble. What happened to the brave, fierce, badass woman? 2.) The bizzare moments with Swan that had me scratching my head...like what is going on? Why did that whole thing just die off with no conclusion? 3.) The whole scenario with the prison visit and Emily's dad's ex-partner...it seemed like a critical piece in the book and that too just died off. 4.) The will they or won't they for National and possible shifting of brothers to other charters is giving me a little anxiety.
I always enjoy reading and being in the Lost King's world and I still did and do. I will forever be a fan and follower. This book just hit different for the various reasons listed above which obviously gave me mixed emotions and vibes. But I'm looking forward to entering the world of the support club next!
So this was an OK story.I like Dex but don’t care for Emily, and I think because I didn’t like her it helped me see certain things about the female structure of the series I willed myself to ignore before. It really was clear because of Emily’s reactions to all of the women.
There are four types of women in the series. Good ones who deserve a man, reformed ones who deserve a man, bad ones who are lucky to get randoms, and horrible ones who get whatever. The good ones are obviously Hope, Lilly, Charlotte,Shelby and Heidi. The reformed bad ones are Trinity and Serena. They were claimed by men so they are now good. The bad ones haven’t been claimed yet by a man so they have to stay bad until a man decides that they’re good or decent to be reformed and worth love. This is a broad group with different behaviors but it includes Willow and Swan. These women usually act badly in some way. Not able to control their bad acts but are accepted. Especially if they’re good to the old ladies. Even if they’re good to the old ladies, they’re not treated very well and that’s ok because they are usually available for sex so they deserve to be treated…you know questionably. Remember, the way, Trinity and Serena were treated before they were claimed. Even after for a while. The horrible women are Anya and Stella and of course, Inga. Their sins are so bad they can never be redeemed by any man.
It’s just sort of hard to believe that any man that would treat his old lady so sweetly and lovingly so easily would also treat every single other woman in the club like trash. Without a little bit of inner conflict. If those women are so terrible, why can’t they get rid of them? Surely there are women who like to have sex, who are not horrible human beings who want to hang out in the club and if not then what does it say about the men? The MC life is free for the men but not for the women. Anyway, just a thought. Maybe I just need another lovable couple to forget all about it. I will continue with the series.
Such a sweet and well deserved happy ever after for Dex and Emily. “Agony to Ashes” is a sweet, heartfelt and well rounded story and the ending both deserved.
The story picks up right where “Rust or Ride” ends so reading that first is a must. Dex and Emily are at a crossroads in their relationship and what the future can hold. Emily has been the sole carer for her sister for years and feels an obligation to always put her first. Dex has lived with the guilt of losing his wife for years and is finally at a place where he feels like he can move on and be happy.
The two face many normal couple problems with an MC twist. Both have gotten used to being by themselves and have to adjust to being a couple. They both have insecurities to work through. Some normal and some with Emily being new to the MC world. I loved how relatable they are as people and as a couple. Dex is incredibly caring, sweet and has a great dirty side that I loved. Emily is his perfect match and they just clicked together. Libby is a riot and such a fun part of the story. The brothers, of course, had me smiling and laughing with how close they are and the antics they would get up to with each other. I’m already counting down the days until Jiggy’s story.
I’ve read this whole series and waited until Dex’s second book was out before I started! I love Dex and how he was so faithful and loving to Emily. Emily was such a great big sister/parent and deserves EVERYTHING! I wasn’t sure how this was going to play out with knowing Dex had lost his first love and child. I DO NOT like the h to be second best, but this was done nicely I think. He was so in love with Emily, he even said it first❤️He was so good to Libby(Emily’s little sister) Deducted a star because I HATE OW DRAMA! I hope Swan isn’t going to get a book or hang around. I hate how Emily was treated and now have to be around her…gross🤮I wish Dex would have told her off more aggressively. Trying to have Emily even defend her with those catty girls really pissed me off, trying to make Swan not look as bad. That didn’t work for me😡I wish Torch and Emily did “hook up” in the past so Dex would know how it feels!!! I have been looking forward to Griff and Molly! I hope he is nothing like Murphy was to Heidi…no girl wants to watch the guy they love fu** around while supposedly loving them the whole time🙄I want them to fight for the girl not be a pussy because of a brother!
I love the Lost Kings so much...some more than others...but when we were left with a heartbreaking ending to the last book, I knew in my heart Emily and Dex would find their way back together somehow. Emily took on the role of not only big sister, but surrogate mom to her younger sister Libby. Bless his heart, Dex took little sis under his wing and did everything possible to prove he was worthy of being in both of their lives. I was cheering them on from the sidelines, as well as cussing up a storm at outside interference. Of course, you can't have a biker book without the catty, posturing "other women" who always try to get between a happy couple. Jealousy rears its ugly head with not only Emily but Dex getting his fair share of worries. Both Emily and Dex needed to let go of their tragic pasts and together they find a way. I loved the family atmosphere of all the men and their women and babies...it was a sweet break from the usual club business that always takes such a violent turn. I really loved their story that gives us a wonderful HFN and hope to see more in future books.
***** 5 ***** "moving on from the past and finding peace" stars
Not for the first time in the past few LOKI books, I was bored reading this.
Like Grinders story, I really don’t get why this needed to be 2-parts. There was a lot of unnecessary filler story that was just irrelevant. And it definitely did not feel like the earlier books in this series.
Dex. Now I waited over 20 books to get his story. He held his grief for years. But these two books didn’t show that at all. It’s like he was a different character in his own story.
I don’t think him and Emily were suited. There was zero passion and spark to them. I wanted Dex and Swan to be together, I felt the earlier books led to that path so I was surprised it didn’t end up there. Surprised and disappointed.
The part I enjoyed the most was the potential plot line of Priest being overthrown.
It’s either time to finish this series or go back to it being a biker MC. It’s definitely not feeling like a biker MC anymore. Either that or start the next generation. I think this one might have run its course if the next few books are like this one and Grinders.

I love Emily and Dex. AJL consistently produces engaging, interesting, melt-your-heart-and-your-lady-bits books. Her men are alpha and grumpy and her women are loyal and strong and they only have eyes for each other. Her Lost Kings series is one of my absolute favorites and any one of the books is a go to when I am in a reading lurch. Highly recommend. Just be prepared to be drawn into the LoKi world. You will laugh, you will cry, you will pick up some fun, new, colorful words to add to your vocabulary. Do be aware, this is the 2nd book for Emily and Dex. You want to start with the 1st one (Rust or Ride) or even the first book of the series (Slow Burn). Wherever you start, you won't be disappointed.
I think my favorite part of this series, besides the relationship between the hero and heroine, is the banter between all the guys in the MC. I'm positive I could read a entire book from Autumn of just the goings on with in the guys in the clubhouse. Autumn has the most witty and perfectly timed one liners in writing, hands down. I also loved the relationship between Emily and her sister Libby. I don't know if it's because I am a Mom of all girls but I was sobbing through the majority of their scenes together. I felt every emotion the two went through together. Again, so well written. It's always fun to return to the LOKI world where it's more than reading a book, it's becoming part of a family.
Agony to Ashes left me with a big ole cheesy smile. Dex and Emily’s story felt very low key which is fitting since they’re both low key. ❤️
There were two things that really made me love this book: 1) the concept of found family oozes throughout the pages more than most LOKI novels from the LOKI brothers to the support club, to the ole ladies.
2) the personalities of the LOKI characters that are normally in the background really shined through…Sparky, Swan, and a different side of Ravage. I loved and soaked up every minute of it!
Thank you, AJL, for allowing me to be part of your ARC team. I have and always will be invested in this series. Cannot wait for the next. 😊
AJL once again releases the perfect HEA for a LOKI couple, Dex and Emily. I loved Dex and Emily from the start, they both had trauma they needed to heal from and through doing so strengthened their relationship. I love Emily as Libby guardian, there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her. It was amazing to see/hear from all of our OG favourite LOKI members. Dex and Libby’s budding sibling relationship is so well done too. AJL has made such an in-depth world for us to delve in to. I cannot wait for Griff and Molly and then Jigsaw 🙌🏻 23 books in and I still need to read the release on release day and can never put them down 😂
The final part of Dex and Emily’s story was amazing. It was wonderful to see them grow as a couple and as a family. Working through old relationships, memories, and new experiences. Learning to trust each other. Watching the relationship between Emily and Libby expand to include Dex along with becoming closer to the club old ladies. Their chemistry remains off the chart and explosive. I can’t say enough good things about this book. Once you start, you’ll be hooked and will be forced to read through the day into the wee hours of the night. It’s that good!!!!!
The second and concluding part of Dex and Emily's story. Another wonderful addition to the Lost Kings MC Series. Dex fighting for a future with Emily after losing his first love and Emily finding her way learning to live again after the tragedy of her past whilst raising her younger sister. All our beloved LOKI characters pop in with the usual banter and lots of laughs and there's plenty of steamy hot scenes. A wonderful end to a long awaited story. To be read after Rust or Ride (#1 of their story) Autumn never disappoints, it's 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ as always from me.
The final book in Dex and Emily's Duet hit all the right notes. I devoured this book in two days (and that is a big deal for me, lol).
This book was full of delicious angst for the first half. We all know this will end with HEA but the Emily and Dex's journey left me wondering how they would actually get there. These two frustrated me and I kept yelling just get back together. And let me tell the wait was worth it. When these two finally got together it was straight fire. These two had so much to overcome to finally have their happiness but I just love how they did it together.
This book conflicted me. I wanted to love it as had been looking forward to their conclusion but for me personally it felt a bit slower than normal. BUT in saying that, slow and enjoying life might be exactly what these two need. The author certainly spoils us with drama and action, so this lighter book just may be the ticket. It didn't stop it from being well written with your jaw aching from either laughing or the few small twists. I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.
If you like a true MC romance read this book is for you. Autumn Jones Lake writes the best banter between characters I’ve ever read that’s why I keep buying. Yes this is book 23 but there are others in this world. That being said you now realize I’ve bought over 30books by ALJ and I don’t care for soft MC books. That’s how good her writing is. Will I buy Griffs book, yes I will. I really hope we have some OW drama or some kind of drama in that one.
I simply am in love with Dex and Emily's story. I'm glad Emily came to her senses and got back together with Dex. I loved the banter between her and Libby. Emily is one protective mama bear. Emily now has a complete family she has always wanted and needed. I'm so happy, Dex, finally got his girl. Next to Z, this is my favorite set of books. I love all of Autumn's stories and can't wait until Jiggy's story. I'd give book 20 stars if I could.
Another King finds his Queen! I am a huge fan of this series and Dex. After Rust or Ride, I wasn't quite sure about Dex and Emily's relationship. Agony to Ashes, told the story of overcoming trust issues, learning what partnership in a relationship is, reaching for your dreams and the strength of family. Autumn's books showcase family in the most beautiful and uplifting ways. There were a few surprises in this book and one character really showed a different side of herself. Looking forward to seeing these surprises in future books!
