"10 Dogs by Emily Gravett is a charming and heartwarming children's book that captures the hearts of both kids and adults alike. The story revolves around ten mischievous and endearing dogs, each with their own distinct personalities and tendencies for getting into trouble. Gravett's skillful storytelling and delightful illustrations make this book a joyful and memorable reading experience.

One of the standout features of "10 Dogs" is the relatability it offers to its readers, as it showcases the idiosyncrasies and antics of different dog breeds. The relatability factor becomes even stronger when the reader can personally connect with a dog that mirrors their own furry companion. In this case, the book's appeal is greatly enhanced for a 12-year-old reader who recognizes their dog's mischief in the story.

Emily Gravett's artistic talents shine in this book as she gives life to each of the ten dogs through her detailed and expressive illustrations. Each dog is beautifully rendered, and their unique traits are wonderfully portrayed, making them instantly lovable. Gravett's ability to capture the essence of various dog breeds adds depth to the characters and engages readers on a more personal level.

The book's simplicity is another commendable aspect. The straightforward narrative and the clear, uncluttered layout make it accessible to young readers while also allowing adults to appreciate its charm. The use of numbers for each dog provides a delightful counting element, making it an educational tool as well.

What sets 10 Dogs apart is its universal appeal. While it's targeted at children, it transcends age boundaries. The whimsical charm of the story and the adorable illustrations can tug at the heartstrings of readers of all ages. It's the kind of book that can be enjoyed together as a family, fostering a shared love for storytelling and a deeper appreciation for our four-legged friends.

All in all, 10 Dogs by Emily Gravett is a delightful and heartwarming book that captivates readers with its lovable characters and relatable narratives. Its simplicity and attention to detail make it a perfect choice for young readers, while its universal charm ensures that it resonates with readers of all ages. If you're looking for a book that celebrates the mischievous yet endearing nature of dogs and brings joy to your reading time, 10 Dogs is a must-have addition to your library.

I loved this book so much that my dog Akira and I made a fun TikTok.

Adorable dogs, sausages, and more than a little mayhem mix to make counting and quanities fun.

Ten dogs of all sorts of sizes and breeds have their eyes on ten sausage links on the table. When the first dog is daring enough to try to snap them, the others follow suit. Soon, havoc breaks loose in the silliest ways as the dogs play their strengths (or suffer) in their attempts to grab a sausage themselves.

The dogs in these illustrations are super cute and range in breeds and sizes, which works great for the humor and various situations. Each one is recognizable and carries personality. They bound and twist in the most mischievous ways, which will have young readers smiling and pointing things out from one page to the next. The calming end rounds off the chaos in a charming manner.

The text is written in short rhymed phrases, which works well for even slightly younger listeners. While counting skills are addressed, the words surrounding quantities (more, less, few, etc) seem to be the focus of this read. These come across alongside the humor and encourage for discussion to help listeners understand the meaning of each one. It's a whimsical way to bring across the themes and simply a cute read on all fronts.
I received an ARC and found it to be a very fun read.

Ten dogs quietly eye ten sausages arrayed on the kitchen table. The sausages are all the same but the dogs run the gamut from big to small: There’s a Great Dane and a Chihuahua, a Westie, a Dalmation, a Dachshund and a few motley mutts. The text on the first spread reads: “10 dogs /10 sausages.” Subsequent pages devolve into mayhem; “1 dog with all the sausages / 9 dogs with none,” then, “2 dogs each with half of them / 8 dogs wanting some,” with the count changing each time the page is turned. The rhyming text imagines all sorts of possible arrangements and silliness, with the dogs in hectic action until the end when they’re all napping happily on the tablecloth, with, apparently, zero sausages left.

Emily Gravett excels at portraying animals. Her pencil and watercolor artwork is such fun, giving each animal grace and personality. The simple text allows the focus to stay on the entertaining drama, wotj the counting practice as an added bonus. I was tickled by the endpapers: the front shows ten sausages lined up on the tablecloth, and the back shows ten greasy shadows where the sausages used to lie. You don’t have to be a dog lover to eat this book up!

Beginning with 10 dogs and 10 sausages (even on the opening end papers), Gravett shares with readers the chaos that ensues as the dogs get their teeth on the sausages. A variety of different scenarios occur as the dogs slowly wreak havoc on the kitchen table, chairs, and tablecloth. Not only is this a counting book, but there is also some basic math introduced as well such as "2 dogs each with half of them, 8 dogs wanting some" easily becomes the question: how many do each of the two dogs have? The detailed pencil and watercolor illustrations provide all kinds of details that make studying the illustrations just as fun as reading the story. Children are likely to enjoy looking to see which dogs have the sausages at any given time. The clever addition of a moment of kindness between the dogs added a nice ending to all the mayhem. Although I suspect the homeowner won't be pleased when he/she/they arrives home. An engaging, amusing concept book that even older children will have to laugh at when they read it.

Oh, what a fun book about counting! I love dogs and sausages and the book is filled with fun, cute illustrations of dogs and what they do with the sausages. Ten sausages sitting on the kitchen table, unsupervised. Ten hungry dogs, drooling. As you can imagine, they cause a mess.

It’s all about counting and is such a delightful way to learn as your child finds which dogs have sausages, how many and which have none. Warning: some sausages are hidden by sneaky dogs. And so many different dogs too.

Picture you and your family huddled together as you count along. I was grinning ear to ear while turning each page and very much recommend this book to all families.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

First sentence: 10 dogs. 10 sausages. 1 dog with all the sausages. 9 dogs with none. 2 dogs each with half of them. 8 dogs wanting some. 3 dogs with more sausages. 7 dogs with less. 4 dogs guard the sausages. 6 dogs not impressed.

Premise/plot: Is it a story? Is it a math lesson? Why not both? This makes for a fun early-elementary read aloud. Back in the day I wouldn't be surprised if teachers had chosen to extend the book's activity with flannel figures--dogs and sausages.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this one. I thought it was fun, playful. I don't always "love" math problems, but an entertaining story with sausages and dogs???? YES please.

Definitely recommend this one to early grades.

10 sausages are sitting in a room. Also in the room are 10 hungry dogs. What kind of mayhem is about to be unleashed?

A creative story that not only has readers count down 10 to 0, but also has the dogs in different combinations along the way with clues to find which dogs fit in which category on each page (requires some body language interpretation and inference to figure out which are which). The illustrations are lively and humorous, and the story ends happily for all (unless you were cheering for the sausages). This is how counting books should be done. A super fun read for kids learning their numbers as well as pattern recognition, and of course, dog lovers.

I read this book as an adult reader for the AR Diamond Book Award.  The cover art and the illustrations throughout are WAY cuter than the actual story.  The cover will hook readers, but readers older than PreK or K will be sadly let down by the lack of story.  If this was a wordless book, it probably would have been a little better.  The book 10 Cats (by the same author) was a bit better than this one.  This book is a very simple read that will help with learning to count to ten.  The illustrations were really fun to look at and see all of the different types of dogs.

I just love Emily Gravett's books! This one has a delightful assortment of ten dogs - and oh-so tempting ten sausages! In the beginning, 1 dog has all the sausages and 9 dogs have none. But we count our way through until each dog has a sausage - and then there are 0 sausages and 10 full dogs! I liked the grease stains on the end pages that mirror where the ten sausages were lined up at the beginning!

Math has never been this playful or puppy filled. This book is both simple and genius. It is a super simple concept. On each page are ten dogs and ten sausages. A few lines of text and humorous illustrations pair them differently each time offering opportunities for counting, adding, and learning ways to create 10. It is a must have for an early elementary classroom but also works as a cute read aloud for toddlers and preschoolers. Genius.

With minimal text and expressive illustrations, this is an engaging counting picture book that tells the story of ten dogs going after ten sausages. There's plenty of drama and lots of hilarity as the dogs all struggle to get hold of a sausage. Readers may worry that the smallest dog doesn't get one, but it all ends well with a creative solution. An absolute delight that will have little ones (especially dog lovers) wanting to read this again and again!

10 dogs and 10 sausages lead to a whole bunch of chaos. What will be the end result?

I loved this counting book. It also is a great math book with combinations of what makes ten. The pictures lead to finding which dogs have what and where all the sausages are as explained in the text. I love books that teach math without kids realizing that their even learning it.

In actuality, this would be hard to use in a group. Maybe a small one would work. The intricate illustrations and numerous opportunities to count sausages and dogs in different combinations, are fun. This is a new take on traditional counting books. Gravett is always good at using humor in her picture books that young and old will delight in as they count away.

A charming and silly counting book about what happens when dogs are left alone with sausages. I was not surprised to find this less delightful than its feline counterpart (10 Cats). But the endpapers are fantastic.

This is the mayhem that occurs when 10 dogs are left alone with 10 sausages! Very funny counting down, then counting up story with humorous watercolor and pencil illustrations; including the greasy smears and crumbs on the rear end papers where the 10 sausages had been laid out.

Yes, yes, yes. Numbers, quantity concepts (more, less), and so many sneaky lessons. Wonderful illustrations. And did I mention dogs?

Spoiler: 5yo loves when the sausage dog pouted as the only dog without a sausage. Hilarious!
