I started this book not knowing what to expect,I had never read any previous books by the author and being honest it was not my usual genre choice......it quickly became a very pleasant surprise,,the story is playful yet intriguing and draws you in,it takes a special kind of author to bring alive a Opera House ( where most of the story is set ) and by the end of the book feel you have learnt about something you had previously no knowledge of,its quirky, exciting and fun....the charcters are immediately likeable and in some cases the opposite!! and I felt an affinity with the main character that I hadnt expected, its Christmassy and warm and cute and cuddly and yet still has ‘major cliff hanger’ moments,,I thoroughly enjoyed the book amd will be looking at other books by the author,if your lookimg for a book leading up to or including Christmas then this book is for you, loved it and was genuinely sorry when I finished it

This was a fun and easy to read book that made an afternoon fly by! Loved Tilly and the chaos she found in after an email 'incident'!! She's a make up artist and by her own admission not the most tech savvy in the world, so when she is sent to have IT lessons with the new managing director she isn't too keen! He is the complete opposite of her and her creative friends, although he is rather easy on the eye!!

There was lots of humour throughout especially contained in the emails that Tilly found herself sending with lots of bookish and football chat that appealed to me! It did all become a little predictable by halfway but still made for an enjoyable story!

Christmas 2020 - Nice

This was an enjoyable romance with a really interesting backdrop - a fictional London opera company. I loved the descriptions of the goings-on backstage and what it takes to get a production up and running. Tilly (short for Matilde) is employed there as a makeup artist and loves her job passionately. Her fiancé Felix, not so much. She can't seem to pull the trigger on a wedding date and he seems equally willing to just drift along.

Tilly finds herself drawn to the new IT director, Marcus, who was hired to whip the artsy opera personnel into better shape regarding their use of computer technology. Of course they end up together, but only after a terrible betrayal threatens everything Tilly loves. This is not an especially unique or challenging read, but I highly recommend it.

Note: The sweet ending happens at Christmas time, which is why I include it in my naughty and nice list, but it's not really a Christmas story.

A nice, escapist, one-afternoon read. Sufficiently fluffy, with engaging, quirky characters. I also loved the settings - our protagonists work in an opera house, so the whole world here is artistic, a little bohemian and occasionally crazy. True, I figured out the major plot twists by the end of chapter 2 or 3, but such predictability did not diminish my enjoyment in reading. The crackling attraction between the main characters, and a fair amount of Mr. Darcy-ness about the hero certainly helped here. ;)

The only minor complaints I have are that , but other than that, I really enjoyed it. Obviously, it is not a Dostoyevsky, but it is definitely a book to pick up when you are on a holiday or in bed with a cold. I might check out this author's other novels.

MTA: Still lots of fun. I did enjoy it the second time around. I would not mind seeing it on the screen; I would not mind at all. ;)

JE NE VOULAIS PAS BOUCLER L'ANNÉE / LE CHALLENGE GOODREADS / SUR UNE DÉCEPTION !!! Donc OUF.

A wonderfully written Christmas romance, with lots of humor. Loved that it was set in an opera and had lots of colorful characters. It's a perfect book to read on wintry nights.

This was a mess. But Iiked the relationships with her family getting better. First she cheated on her fiance, but then I found out that he cheated the whole time too. I liked the opera.

Even though Christmas has come and gone, just, this is still a wonderful read to warm your heart on these cold day/evenings.

Tilly has a fabulous job working in an opera house doing everyone's make up. Where she may be a pro when it comes to make up, she certainly isn't when it comes to computers. If I was good at either it would be be a miracle but I certainly had every sympathy when it comes to computers.

Marcus just oozes sex appeal. Even though he comes across as being quite stern, that just melted into the background whilst I envisioned him taking me into his arms, oops enough about my day dreams but I'm sure we have all been there with a fictional character that we can't help but fall for along with the main character.

Covent Garden in the Snow is a wonderfully light hearted read to brighten up these dark and dull wintery days. If you like a fun and engaging read with a dash of romance thrown in then you are in for a real treat.

My thanks to Harper Impulse for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

This is an enjoyable read, although I would have liked to see what her ex said/did when he found out that his affair partner had framed her for something and lost her job. I liked the H and I really liked her sister.

*Book provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

Covent Garden in the Snow drew me in from the start. First of all, I love the title and the cover. Secondly, it’s set in Covent Garden! Thirdly, it follows Tilly Hunter, who is a make-up artist with a prestigious opera company. I have never really been into operas, but we sang songs from them before and it’s close to musicals, so it was really interesting to read all this background information.

Tilly is engaged to Felix. He is very easy-going, but I just didn’t like him. Anyway, Tilly is kind of forced to work closely with IT director Marcus Walker. The two of them couldn’t be more different, but that’s what made the storyline interesting.
She also discovers something about Felix and her situation with her family is not easy either. There is a lot going on in her life.

I loved getting insights to the opera and I really liked the scenes between Tilly and Marcus. Jules Wake has a great eye for detail and captured the atmosphere around Covent Garden beautifully. The storyline is cute, full of ups and downs and just perfect for Christmas. I very cosy and sweet book.

This is my first read by Jules Wake. I especially liked main character Tilly Hunter. She has a dream job as a make-up artist with a prestigious opera company and is engaged to Felix. This is a quick read and a laugh a page. You're going to love reading about fiasco's Tilly gets herself into starting with the accidental email getting sent. Romantic book with just the right amount of Christmas atmosphere, mince pies and tea included.

Rating this has been hard, because there have been a few things I really liked, but the whole story just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I wouldn't call this a Christmas romance. Or a romance. There is a new romantic interest, but to be honest, he is not the main theme of the book. Tilly has a normal, yet complicated life. Where the story shines is at Tilly's background; having been a more artistic soul who clashed with her family over her future, she remained in perpetual limbo regarding her parents and sister. There is bad blood, but in the end all it is is Tilly feeling inferior and not having the courage to bridge the gap she made.

I wish I could read more about Christelle (her sister) and maybe even her normal everyday at work. It's true that working in an important place as the LMOC, is fascinating to listen to tidbits of how things work. Yet, the story revolves around Tilly's inability to handle computers, take in charge and put an end to her dying relationship.

And that would be fine, but then the story tries to go as far as it can and turns good friendships to absolute worst for no real reason and not only that, but as everything negative keeps piling up in the span of few pages, there is no satisfactory ending by the end of the book. I'm sorry, but after that I've read, I REALLY want some butt to be kicked and not have everything be resolved off screen. Where is my divine retribution?! These kinds of actions and behaviors are not meant to be just "over"!

So, Tilly is an interesting enough lead and despite this not being heavily romance-centered, the constant commentary of how she cannot even breathe once she looks at Marcus (the obligatory hunk, who charms every female) was suffocating. There is literally no interaction between them that does not have some sexual comment in her mind or spoken. Crazy chemistry does not constitute a romantic novel, as it is apparent in this book, but it is still a fun read in this case.

SO not me, a relentless whiner about romance novels and "chick lit." I will defend myself by saying the lure of this book was the setting, in London, in Covent Garden. Plus the author was assisted by friends in the Royal Opera House and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The first time I was in London was a late December, early January decades ago. Five blissful weeks taking in classes at the Royal Academy of Music, set up by my advisor who happened to be a graduate. A dozen captivated American college music majors cut loose to visit courses and take in every concert we could wrangle tickets to. We saw Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd and Debussy's Pailias et Melisande at Covent Garden. And Hair on New Year's Eve, tromping from Piccadilly Circus to Trafalgar Square through crowds of spirit laden revelers all the way home to our flat off Gloucester Road - because the Underground had already closed for the night. What fabulous memories that came alive with all the locations and theatrical descriptions in this book. The main character is not a singer or musician, but a makeup and wig artist. It certainly underscores the personality, passion and drive of those involved with the opera world, and respect for the contributions of the visual and technical supports. Of course its not without a considerable amount of breath catching, lips grazing, heavy breathing, longing gazes, etc. etc. etc. To Jules Wake's great credit, she has found a considerably wide variety of ways to describing said sexual anticipation, with quick wit and good pacing. I had a lot of fun with a cute seasonal read. A nice guilty pleasure.

This is a charming Christmas read about a woman who works as a makeup artist in a theater with other eccentric staff. The plot was cozily predictable and the characters were likable. I liked the backdrop of the theater and it was a pleasantly different setting. This was quite enjoyable.

I am a fan of Jules Wake’s books and this one is right up there with the best of them. Always up for a Christmas read this time of year, this one was loads of fun without being over the top in any area. I like that this book incorporated more of a holiday feel, especially the wonderful Covent Garden descriptions and traditions, rather than full on commercialism. It was very relatable with all the family traditions, looking for gifts and sharing a meal - comfort reading at this time of year.

“Christmas back then, when we were young had been fun, when lunch was a long-laid back affair, in which Mum insisted we all wore our cracker crowns.”

One of the unexpected surprises about this book is learning all about the behind-the-scenes action of the opera. The main lead, Tilly, works at the London Metropolitan Opera Company in the make-up department and loves her job except having to learn about updating stock etc on the computer. This makes for many an amusing situation. That aside, it was absolutely fascinating to learn about what goes on backstage for a production, things I had never really considered. A lot of research must have been done around everything from wig making, to costume design, to the frantic change overs - I learnt so much!

“Backstage we became shadows cocooned in a world between reality and fantasy. I loved these moments, tucked out of sight but so close to the action unfolding on stage. They held a special indefinable magic that I always wanted to hug close to me, a time when nothing else from the world intruded.”

Of course there is also some fun chick lit and the chemistry between the two leads was highly entertaining, frustrating, frivolous and rewarding. To match the creative Tilly with the IT savvy Marcus was always going to produce some amusing encounters. You will quietly smirk or giggle with what Tilly frustratingly does to technology and how gently Marcus tries to coach her. Typically, you know what’s coming, but good writers like Jules make you enjoy every step of the journey.

All up I can highly recommend this book as there are many facets to it, not being a one dimensional chick lit read. So snuggle up this Christmas as this book is sure to put a smile on your face.

“Christmas brings out the fanciful in me. I can’t help myself. I loved this time of year and the infectious attitude in the streets.”

Thoroughly sweet and readable Christmas chicklit! And I loved the fact that it was set in the London opera world. My only gripe is that the author (and/or her editor) seem to have a massive aversion to commas, and the lack of them made some sentences difficult to follow. I'm not mentioning this because I want to be a "This is WRONG!" grammar Nazi, but when there are sentences like, "I'm going to get you Mary" or "I'm upstairs John" without commas, it's REALLY jarring, and pulls me right out of the world of the book. Plus it can change the meaning sometimes (hence the book "Let's eat Grandma!" :-))

I'm definitely keen to read some other books by Jules Wake, but I hope they don't all have this problem!

Bohužiaľ, trvalo 200 strán, kým ma to začal baviť. Top top.

description

10lpp and i'm out.

Kāpēc? Pirmkārt, jo varone ir muļķe pārspīlētā līmenī. Tiešā nozīmē. Ja tu esi vecāka par 10 gadiem, tu zini, ka dīvainu e-pastu pielikums nevajag vērt vaļā. Nopietni. Man liekas, ka tagad to zina pat pensionāri, kam nav datora, jo to visur stāsta.
Un man jau tas nobesīja.

Treškārt: ''Hi'', i squeaked like an oversized guinea pig''.
Nopietni?

Šī likās, ka mēģina vnk braukt parasto lubeni(ne viscaur komēdiju) ar not like other women galveno varoni, kuras darbības ir vnk idiotiskas tajā apkārtējā vidē... bet rakstītas, acīmredzot, ar domu, ka oh so chaarming.
No.

Vārdu sakot - 10 lpp un man bija skaidrs, ka ar šo rakstības stilu un varoni man nav pa ceļam.

Alles in allem nette, leicht weihnachtliche Unterhaltung. Nicht mehr, aber auch nicht weniger.

Slightly long review.

I really liked this story. I loved Tilly and loved following her journey to ‘maturity’ so to speak. It was really interesting to read as she delved into not only her romantic relationship and life but also how she tackled her family issues and eventually addressed many unsolved issues in her life. I loved the attraction between her and Marcus and how their relationship developed.

Here is why I took one star away.
1. It really ticked me off that through everything Tilly has gone through with Felix, she forgave him. Initially I understood why. It was because of who she is. She’s not malicious or vindictive. But time after time when this idiot disappointed her and lied to her, she never just broke down and told him to f*** the hell off. I didn’t expect her to use these exact words or even throw a tantrum or a scene but I would have loved it if at the end she would just calmly told him to pack his things and leave. I know that at the end, she mentions that the apartment is empty and all and I guess it was alluded to the fact that he is no longer there but every time something happened, it was her that left. HER OWN APARTMENT! I guess it just would have been satisfying to read her say these words to him even if she had no intention at staying in the apartment herself.

2. It wasn’t really clear how Marcus found out about Vince and the emails. Maybe I missed something but still... it should have come full circle. After all, it was him on her account when the 1st email came in from Redsman. And if Marcus connected these dots, how did he do that? Everything else was explained and this should have been too.

3. Finally, there was an instant where Tilly sees a watercolor painting, I honestly thought it was her mother’s doing. Would have been nice if Tilly found out that her artistic side came from her mom. But again, maybe I missed something.

Even with all that, I loved the story, it is now in my top 5. I will definitely check out other books from Jules Wake.

Tilly works in an Opera House and adores her job, she's cosy at home with her fiance Felix and life is fine. But when she accidentally causes a major disruption at work, she is forced to work with new IT Director, Marcus. A technophobe, Tilly resists Marcus's attempts to help her become more IT efficient, until sparks begin to fly between them and a personal crisis brings them closer together.

I sometimes forget how much I enjoy a well written chick lit romance. I picked this as an antidote to some rather deeper books I've been reading lately, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. I loved the bubbling romance between the characters and the London setting, with references to Christmas events in Covent Garden. The Opera House backstage was definitely bought to life and made a good setting for an office romance. A charming feelgood read.

Hell yes, gimme.

I don’t read many contemporary romances as I usually don’t care for them. However, this one was outstanding and had a definite Bridget Jones vibe to it (which I LOVED!). It was just about the perfect holiday read.

NOTE: The main character talks about her “negative electrical force field” and how she has dodgy biospheres. “Mobile phones give up the ghost on a regular basis” and she and technology are a disaster. I find this so interesting because I have crashed every computer I have ever touched… even an Ipad at the Apple store. (The employee was amazed – he said that had never seen anyone crash one before.) The running joke in my family is that I must have a “special electrical aura”. Hmmmmm
