Café worker Riku has just been dumped... again. Despite always giving relationships his all, Riku can't seem to ever make it past the three-month milestone in any relationship. And then there's Josh, the handsome, wealthy owner of the café who seems to have it all together. When Riku wakes up in Josh's bed after what he can only assume is a consolation rebound, Josh shockingly suggests continuing a no-strings-attached fling.
Fooling around with a rich man... will they drink champagne in a jacuzzi? Riku has no idea, but he's not going to turn it down!
This therapeutic BL features the ideal man who will pamper and spoil his love! This book contains sexual content and is intended for an audience aged 18 years and up.
This was super sweet 🥰 a lot of the time, or at least the ones I've read so far, one-shot manga either only focuses on the sex scenes or the story needs to be longer / shorter or executed better. Bergamot & Sunny Day has a cute story and fun spicy scenes. I enjoyed reading about Riku and Josh's romance, and i wish it were longer! I'm hoping Riku's friend and roommate get a spin-off book. I would love to read more on him and have an update on Riku and Josh.
Bergamot and Sunny Day is an age gap romance between an employee and employer of a café. Riku was recently dumped, and his confidence in relationships is pretty low. Enter Josh, his boss and owner of the café Riku works at who has had a crush on Riku for a while.
I enjoyed this one! Thank you Kate for talking about it on Twitter because your recs are always A+ and I never find a bad story.
Bergamot & Sunny Day is the story of a café worker and his love life!! After another breakup, Riku is devastated. Everyone tells him it's because he's too much, he gives it his all, and stuff like that. It's then that his wealthy boss finally makes his move. He has been pining and crushing on Riku for a while!! And it's so cute to see Riku all flustered because now someone is giving his all FOR HIM. FOR HIM!! When no one has ever done that. And he's wealthy, hot, and super sweet.
I hope we get another volume because I loved the art and the characters so much! Hopefully <3
josh is giving kurosawa from cherry magic—both in terms of the art style and how sweet he is toward riku 🤌🏻
[ longer rtc eventually ; just do yourself a favor & go read this because joshriku are adorable. wdym this is an age gap AND employer/employee bl that isn’t toxic???? ]
I loved this. Riku is adorable. He's a romantic, but he's also inexperienced and insecure. Josh is such a wonderful love interest. He is gentle, empathetic, and loves spoiling Riku both in and out of bed. This book just brought me joy, and it's a new favorite.
A pleasant surprise! There isn't a huge amount to this story, which is alright for a one-shot; the focus is pretty much all on Riku's relationship with Josh, his boss and one-night-stand-turned-lover. And their relationship, despite how that setup sounds, is actually really sweet and supportive the whole way through.
There were a few elements that I thought were a bit misleading/plot-holey. One is the whole bit about Riku not being able to make any of his relationships last for longer than three months. You'd think that would've been a bigger deal in his relationship with Josh, but there was no big fuss at the three month marker.
The timing was overall a little wobbly...if they were only able to see each other once a week, or every two weeks or whatever with Josh's ultra busy schedule, had they only gone on a handful of dates? How much had they really talked to each other in that time? Had Riku spent more time with his previous boyfriends prior to their breakups?
Then there's the reason for why all those relationships failed. Initially, Riku says it's because he's too clingy, and the guys all got tired of him and pushed him away. But later on, he tells Josh that it's because he wouldn't get physically close to any of them (meaning: sex), because he had a bad experience with his first boyfriend/first time and believed from then on that he was simply bad at sex and didn't want to disappoint anyone else or lose them as a result.
It was kind of...unnecessary, I guess. I liked the original reason better; it was more emotionally interesting. But I liked how gentle and caring Josh was, and how he always made Riku's comfort a priority.
I also liked that their misunderstanding/miscommunication wasn't too outlandish and didn't last too long. It was simply, literally, that Riku wasn't listening because he was too wrapped up in his own anxieties, and then spiraled into believing that Josh didn't want to be with him anymore...or that they were never fully together. Which was all absurd, because it was very clear from the start that Josh was actively interested and fully invested in Riku; the "one night stand" wasn't really that at all, and they were pretty solidly dating by the morning after, at least from Josh's point of view. It was nice to circle back around and see things from his perspective, including why he was attracted to Riku from the start.
I wouldn't say this was a top favorite, but there's a lot to enjoy, and I'll definitely reread.
I was a bit cautious first going into this manga due to the premise and the events that happened in the first chapter. However, I quickly grew to find the story adorable and loved seeing Riku and Josh’s relationship develop as the story progressed. The only reason I didn’t give this volume 5 stars is because I wish there was a “part 2” of the series to focus on Jing since I’m very curious about him.
Oh, I loved this. It's just my cup of tea. I can see myself re-reading it multiple times. The story is simple but very well executed in both dialogue and transitions, which usually clunck-up others like this one, and the way the artist draws expressions is fantastic. I would say this is worth the money just because of the art. It's gorgeous!
Seeing the cover I knew I would love this story which is why I was so reluctant to read it. And now that I’ve read it, I’ve been itching to reread it.
This story is really cute! We follow cafe worker Riku who is fresh out of another short length relationship. One day, late at night while crying his heart out to cafe owner Josh, things turn intense and soon Riku finds himself waking up at Josh’s place. After some awkward interactions, they continue this relationship without a name. However as Riku’s feelings become serious, he longs for clarity and a name to this relationship.
This is an age-gap romance and Josh is the perfect older male character. Josh is very caring and encourages Riku to be himself and voice his thoughts. The subtle little touches of romance Josh expresses when he’s with Riku are really adorable. I loved how Josh listened to Riku talk about himself; looks for Riku’s approval; and didn’t do anything that would make Riku feel uncomfortable. Riku is kind of the opposite because he’s a cute mess with a lot of emotions. Riku overthinks but it’s based on past trauma but since he is very expressive it’s easy to understand him. He’s such a lovable character and both of them match each other so well.
The story is romance based but I loved how it weaved in the cafe setting. The relationship between Riku and Josh develops quickly but the dialogues note quite a bit of time has passed between dates. I liked how it progressed and how the dates were simple, effective and cute. I wish we could see more of them as they live together as a couple. I also loved Riku’s supportive friend and am interested if he has a story since his situation sounded a bit sad. The aspect of the cafe, especially the tie-in with the title, was clever.
The artwork took my breath away. The beautiful mixture of iconography, scenery, and simple character expressions was perfect. The balance achieved with all the elements made such a captivating story. I loved the character designs and we were treated with many full body poses. I love when a story shows changes the character’s clothes and hairstyles depending on the occasion; it shows the amount of effort taken.
Overall, I loved this story and I recommend everyone to give it a try. There is a misunderstanding though it’s short-lived and kind of cute in hindsight. Riku and Josh are definitely one of my new favorite couples!
The art in this is lovely and the story is genuine and sweet. Spicy but not lurid and everything is consensual (I wish I didn’t have to praise this, but it’s BL, so here we are.)
This was a cute little one off story! I really liked the food and restaurant aspect of the story, it made the BL unique. I give the story a 4 because the plot itself isn’t anything revolutionary. The books main theme is the awkwardness of dating, dealing with feelings, unspoken words, and titles. It’s something we can all relate too, but again, the book doesn’t really tackle anything incredibly revolutionary, but the story is pretty lighthearted so it works! I think maybe the writer could have added different elements or layers to the storyline that could’ve made the characters and plot more complex and elaborate, but it’s not a major factor, I still enjoyed my read very much!
A cute realistic fiction boys love manga about a cafe worker and the cafe's owner. I like the plot about anxiety and dealing with the trauma of break-ups. Being afraid of being too much for a partner - or people in general - is always fun to explore, especially when the character in question gets comforted. The writing isn't always the best in this, but generally it's quite fun.
The art, however, is a bit hit or miss. At times it's quite cute, and the mangaka is generally good at drawing food and faces (though Josh's face is a bit weird at times, and one of the staff, who's I think black, is a bit odd, even though another black character looks fine). But they're really bad at drawing hands and feet (the feet are too long, the fingers are all disjointed/broken). I think the mangaka knows, which is why there aren't many shots of feet (I can recall 2-3 in total), but hands are kind of unavoidable, and the second sex scene is kind of difficult to look at given how weird the hands look. This is on top of the fact that a few panels are just photographs of city views. It's not everywhere, but it's very obvious. So there's corner cutting and kind of just embarrassing art in places, and that's hard to deal with. It's sad, because the stuff the mangaka is good at it is pretty cute.
It also feels sort of weird that someone interested in food service doesn't seem to know much about food. There aren't any moments where we learn that Riku is good at cooking or knows a lot about any particular dish, and even the restaurant administrative stuff we learn is from Josh, not Riku. Riku does say he's interested in service, not specifically food, so I think it's kind of a dodge. And I can't say I'm upset this isn't yet another cooking comic, because unless they're "Delicious in Dungeon", I tend to find them boring. But it's a bit odd at times to deal with.
All in all, it's a nice, largely fluffy manga that's not too bad, even with some rough art and writing spots.
This starts off kinda sketchy. We have a young man who gets dumped a lot. Riku's exes all says he's clingy and stressful. We also learn later that he never His boss, Josh, twice his age, keeps asking him out in a creepy "can't tell if he's joking or serious" way.
When the book starts, Riku has just been dumped again. His coworkers tell Josh he should give Riku a break from teasing because he's sad. Josh gets Riku to stay after work for tea and sympathy. Riku cries. Josh comforts him and then kisses him, because that's not manipulative and creepy at all. Then they have sex. Riku doesn't say no or yes that we see, and just lies there. Later he seems uncomfortable but not too upset.
The next time they talk Josh suggests they have a casual relationship so Riku can get used to banging guys without getting attached or something, I didn't really follow either characters' chain of thought. They have various meals together and sex, and of course Riku does becomes attached and is upset when Josh ghosts him for days. Josh is on a business trip and apparently it is supposed to be plausible that he's just too busy to see messages and can't be bothered to text even once.
In real life Josh would clearly be a predatory creep, but this is fiction and it turns out he's super into clingy pillow princesses who cry, and also is rich. And they lived happily ever after.
Riku is convinced he's bad at relationships as he's never made it to 3 months with one person. Enter Josh, his employer at the cafe, and things start turning on their head. How Riku could convince himself that they're just a fling even after months of this is baffling as it's clear Josh doesn't intend on letting go. Even then, he seems far more concerned with Riku's feelings and happiness while still managing to be aware of his own feelings. It's hinted that there's some age gap at least as Josh is older and "more experienced", however, this gap isn't defined. At least it seems they're both already old enough to drink and Riku is working with no mention of school, so while the age gap is unknown, hopefully it is minimal. Josh is very careful not to abuse his position as employer over Riku, or that would be a concern as well. If anything, Josh seems to want to do whatever he can to convince Riku to stay.

This is a one and done story, which is nice in it's own way to have short simple sweet. I found the relationship stuff relatable, since many of us have a rough time dating and dealing with breakups. I think that this story offers up a sweet option for a healthy relationship example. Hanging a supportive partner is important and having one willing to put your needs first is good too. Josh is a very nurturing and loving partner that is dedicated to making his partner happy and improve their mental health as well.
On a side note, there are a few love making parts that have full male genitalia drawn with some graphic bits. It's not a lot and not even the focus of the story. Just feel that I should mention it since it's super rare for boy parts to be drawn in manga.
Looking for a safe, sane and consensual mature BL? This one’s set in the United States in a café that will have your mouth watering at every second! I highly recommend this wholesome read!
If a story with beautiful food, minimal heartbreak, the most beautifully detailed panels you will ever see, and a healthy relationship is something you’re interested in… Bergamot and Sunny Day might be a suitable choice for your next read.
Who is this manga for This manga is perfect for readers who enjoy layered storytelling between characters who have both great chemistry together and communicate well!
sighs.... where's my city-living rich, cafe owning man twice my age who likes tea and desserts and can cook and would make a custom tea blend just for me???????
I really liked this one! To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from it just based on the vibes, but Josh was straight up Made For Me, so I ended up liking it a lot, just for the wish fulfillment aspect of it all. But even outside of that, this was cute. I liked how Josh had to help Riku prioritize himself and pull him out of his shell, because, yeah -- relationships only work if both people are being authentic with each other.
Super cute romance. Riku has not had any luck with relationships so he gets consoled by his boss, Josh. I feel like most of it was about communicating with your partner not only to get to know or understand them but also to let a person express themselves. Our main character never got to experience this until Josh. It really is quite heartwarming how Josh treats and treasures Riku and it what makes this story 🥰🥰😏.
