I sometimes mention here some books are encounters. Random encounters, which weren't supposed to happen – so is the case for « Jo kiraina kowamote shachô to kikan gentei kon hajimemashita », got in a bundle with another book I was looking for. If it'd been solely for its blurb, I would never have bought it on my own... and yet, it ended to be one of my best reads of this almost-half year.
Let's admit the concept of « marrying my boss who hates women », even for only a year, « to save his company » is NOT what you'd call an appealing plot. I feel I already lost some of you here, so, let's clear some points first.
Kensuke is not the basic incel or masculinist you'd find on internet. He just grew up between the fights of a socialite mom and his dad's own working mom, before become the prey of rich heiresses more interested by his social position and bank account than himself. So, he's just happy to stay on his own. That's all. But it wasn't the thing to say to a traditionalist commercial partner praising the joys of married life. The old man is angry. The collab between the companies now depends of fixing the mistake. Aoi, his old study buddy, will make a perfect pretend-wife and her lack of feminity appears like a good thing : it lowers the risks of Kensuke messing things up. Except no one knows Aoi holds feelings for Kensuke since *years*.
So, in fact, it's you classical fake-dating stuff. But there are so much things to love in this book. Like the complicated relationship between Kensuke's mom and her own mother-in-law, who don't really hate each other, but are just too different to understand each other and get along.
But, more importantly, the plot revolving around Manaka, « the other woman ». Instead of serving a jealousy story, Suzume Tengamori choose making her a friend to Aoi, with a complicated personal situation. Telling more would be spoil, but let's say it was totally unexpected and perfectly done by the author. It's a delight. Alright, there's a little « too easy » thing but... after all, chance sometimes happen in real life too.
Overall, the atmosphere is very mature and serious. It'd been nice to see more of the character's work in the construction company instead of small references, but that's it.
The romance is in the same spirit. Kensuke never speaks his mind, and if there are physical encounters (most of the illustrations showing those moments), and his complicity with Aoi makes no doubt, she'll have to wait until the very end to know what he really thinks. But it's plausible in the context.
If you're looking for a more adult-toned romance with a realistic setting, and even if you usually prefer something else, « Jo kiraina kowamote shachô to kikan gentei kon hajimemashita » has everything to like.
Just one more thing. Japanese.
Personnally, my level is still waaaaaaay not good enough to « read » ; at most decipher or understand what a sentence is about, but no more. So I used machine translation (towards english, because japanese-to-french was an indescriptible disaster)... and it works quite well. It's not perfect, some sentences are weird, but we don't have any trouble to follow the plot or exchanges between the characters. So... yes, it works. Would I recommended this solution to everyone ? No, but if you're willing to, just know it's possible !
9/10, rounded up to five stars because it WAS amazing.
