What lengths would you go to protect the ones you love? Would you endure torture at the hands of depraved criminals? Would you surrender your body and soul to the enemy? Would you betray those who mend your broken pieces?
Addicted to the Pain was my first full-length read from author Rosa Lee, and I honestly don’t know why I’ve waited so long to pick up one of her novels. After reading the blurb of this dark contemporary romance, I felt like it was written for me. And now that I’ve turned the final page, I’m thoroughly wrecked. WRECKED, ROSA.
Let’s set the stage: Two warring crime families, the Tailors and the Dead Soldiers, operate in the shadows in small-town Colorado. They couldn’t be more different, except for their desire to inflict as much pain as possible on each other with no regard for collateral damage.
The story beings with Lark, the Soldier’s Darling, recounting the injuries she’s collected while being held and tortured by her sworn enemies. Because the physically violent approach isn’t bearing fruit, the Tailors take a different approach to wring out some information. Cue Aeron, Jude, Knox, and Tarl, four men who are as devastatingly beautiful as they are dangerous. What they don’t know is Lark seems to have ulterior motives of her own.
I. LOVE. LARK. She’s a woman who has had nothing but the worst of what humanity has to offer thrown at her for decades, yet still finds a way to seek the light at the end of the tunnel. She’s a fiery, quick-witted ginger that knows what she wants, and will stop at nothing to achieve it. The pain she endures, both physically and emotionally, is enough to break even the most resolute, but instead she bends, weaving her way to a brighter future.
The Tailor boys? Each has their own unique voice, whether that be a buttoned-up control freak, a Disney-loving unhinged lunatic, a bear of a man with a heart of gold and fists of steel, or an inquisitor who heals as much as he hurts. All damaged beyond repair, and I adored them. I won’t say more, you need to meet them yourself. I’m hoping we learn more about their backstories in the next installment.
You want filthy smutty goodness? You get that in spades between these covers. I mean, what do you expect with a hyper sexual woman and four insatiable men? The steam begins early…and it never lets up. You get all the fixins of an MMFMM #whychoose romance, and yes, there's ⚔️.
It seems 2023 is the year for exceedingly good books, this one quickly earning its place on my list of favorites. The ending destroyed me and I’m in dire need of book two. Beautifully written, it’s a stunning exploration of found family and enduring the darkness. Twisted, disturbing, obscene, this book was everything I needed and more. Loved it.
