It started to feel like it was conflict just for the sake of conflict. Also, we were beginning to go in circles.

Oof, okay I hate to do this, but I am trying to be honest with my Indie reviews. This was a 2.5 star read for me.
One small reminder, I am reading the old version.
Four big problems for me and the rest are minor issues.
1. Oh my chicken nuggets half of this book could have been cut from useless discription. I do *not* need to know what coffee holder in the car everyone puts their coffee in. Nearly every single dialogue tag had a discription after it. Please please just let people talk, not every eye, hair, lip, or hand movement is important. This problem bothered me especially when twice Emma imagines what people might be doing when she can't even see them.
2. Emma was just so annoying to me in this book. Half of this book was unnecessary conflict with her and Mr. Dawson or her and her mom when almost every time the adults were right. She's not all that bright most of the time yet everyone keeps saying she's brilliant and wise for her age even tho nearly every decision she makes is problematic.
3. Nothing happened? The pacing was a bit all over the place and everything that happened got entirely or partially undone the whole book.
4. The relationships.There's still a lot of telling instead of showing for relationships. We're told that everyone is best freinds when every time they see each other Emma is lying. Nolan is a plot device. Jak and Emma "arent dating" despite multiple dates and having been kising each other for way too long.
Minor issues:
- I think the story would be better if someone her age knew about Emma.
- Part of Emma's ptsd feels off, although I can't place what it is
- The magic scaling in the world doesnt make sense. If all of the magicians are this week, why is everyone so afraid of them when guns exists. If Emma is the strongest, and yes I know she's not fully trained yet, then there's not a huge reason for the general population to be this worried
Some positives:
- While I did want her to just tell the truth, I did like Emma's struggle with all of the lies she's told and secrets shes kept
- Even tho I did say a part of Emmas PTSD feels off, a lot of it is really well done! I like that it was thoroughly present throughout the book
- I love the setting!
- I do like the magic system, but I do wish it was flushed out more
- Alexa's backstory inclusion was unexpexted, but well done and I like how it played into the themes
- I adore Moren
- The final conflict was well done!
- That plot twist ending made me very interested in the next book
Overall it was a bit of a miss for me, I think I'm either going to read Thy Kingdom Come, or the new edition of the fourth book next, but if either of them are also a miss for me, then I think its fair that I drop the series. I don't like giving negative reviews to indie authors, myself being one.

The previous two books I've read in this series were the second editions and this was a third edition (the latest) so the writing off the bat was definitely more fleshed out and you can tell Tosado has grown in her writing and prose.
However, the main character, the love interest.. they were quite annoying still. I'm sorry, but I wanted Jak gone for basically all the scenes he was in. Emma was understandable as the story progressed and she's becoming a better character (so major points for growth and development!)
The most interesting, and my favorite characters, were mostly the adults—as in Thomas Dawson, Moren, and Ingrid.
I LOVE the worldbuilding/magic system. I think that's the strongest part of this book/series! I would be so interested to see a detailed chart of all the magic classes laid out either in the book or somewhere online (social media or a website).
The pacing was a bit off, in my opinion. There were parts where I could just binge it was I was so intrigued and everything flowed well, or there were scenes—short or long—that I was just not feeling as much as those others.

A massive step forward on an already fantastic series.
Before I start my review, I have to clarify 2 things:
1) I have read the first two books of the series.
2) I was a beta reader for this book, and I reread it after the author made significant changes.
To be honest, this book was an easy 5 for me! There was so much depth in the characters and in the storylines. The first book in the series was fairly innocent. Book 2 added depth and took several steps forward in writing quality. This book, blew both of those away!
I won't spoil anything here, but the character relationships are far more complex. The emotions and the situations are heavy and have a depth that hits hard chapter after chapter. Every page made me wonder what was about to happen next and where the story was going.
I don't really have any criticisms of this book. The author gives us so much for this story arc, but she also sets up so many other storylines for the rest of the series. I really don't know where it's all going after this one, but I can promise you that I will be along for the ride.
Go back and read the first two. Then read this one. You will not regret it!

This book was Amazing. I was instantly engulfed in this book and I couldn’t put it down. The plot twists were insane! The character development was exponential. I began to feel more for the side characters than I had before this book.
I felt that, for the little bit he was a part in, Nolan had felt more like a real character with emotions. Breanne was definitely given more depth when we see her gain Alexa’s magic. Opal had immediately been given depth to her and she felt very much like a real person.
When she had also introduced Kamose, you could feel her leading to something bigger and grander with them and Annisa. Emma herself has begun to undergo huge character development. She had realized her mistakes and she worked to fix them, which we had seen at the end of this book..
All in all I REALLY enjoyed this book, and am ready to begin the next book.

This is by far my favorite of the series so far. The plot was masterfully crafted, with layers of secrets as characters decide what they can and can't trust others with. The main magic used in this book is the memory wipe, which can be deliberate or accidental, and which definitely throws a wrench in things.
I was hooked on this book so much that I read the first 2/3 in close to one sitting, which is not new for the Atera books but especially true for this one. The book took me under 48 hours.
Congratulations, Ariana, on another fantastic addition to the Emmalynn Atera series! I'm very excited to get my hands on book 4.

This is by FAR my favorite of all three books. Ariana did an incredible job with this one. The details and the foreshadowing were just insane it’s amazing how well she did with this one. I thought I loved the other books but wow this one is the best.

This book was for sure the best book I’ve ever read. It was the best book of the series and I absolutely loved every twist and turn there was. Tosado’s prose is beautiful. I loved how things came together at the end. I can’t wait until book 4!
