Shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2023

AN INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER SHORTLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023'Reading this is like watching an O'Sullivan hypnotic, dazzling and impossible to tear yourself away from.' - STEPHEN FRY'Besides quite a few laughs, many readers will find recognition, reassurance, remedy and revelation in O'Sullivan's candid story. I highly recommend it.' - THE TIMES'Ronnie is searingly honest, candidly funny, and thought provokingly brilliant in Unbreakable. I devoured it.' - NIHAL ARTHANAYAKE---In a career spanning over three decades, Ronnie O'Sullivan's journey to becoming the greatest snooker player of all time has been filled with extremes.A teenage snooker prodigy, Ronnie turned professional with the highest of expectations. This pressure, together with a challenging personal life, catapulted Ronnie into a life of excess and addiction. He was winning titles - his first within a year of turning professional - but losing himself and his game as he tried to block out the mental pain and misery. Whilst Ronnie appeared at the height of the game to spectators, these were the moments when he felt at his lowest.
In the year 2000 Ronnie started rehab and began the journey to get his life back, addressing his demons and working on developing a stronger and more resilient mindset. More than twenty years on, Ronnie is still obsessed with delivering his peak performance and never happier than when in a snooker hall, but success has now taken on a new meaning for the record-equalling world champion.
Framed around the many lessons Ronnie has learned from his extraordinary career, Unbreakable takes us beyond the success and record-breaking achievements to share the reality - and brutality - of making it to the very top, whatever your field. Ronnie is the first to say he doesn't have all the answers, but in sharing the experiences that have shaped him and mistakes that have made him, he hopes to help readers navigate their own personal challenges and obstacles, and in turn reach their maximum potential.
This is Ronnie O'Sullivan as you've never seen him before, the definitive and unflinching story of a true British icon and a fascinating insight into the mindset of the world's greatest snooker player.

I will start by being completely transparent here, I am a massive Ronnie fan. I think he is an actual genius, a fascinating character and I adored his last book, “Running”. So much so in fact I bought it three times: once on audible and twice on paperback because I lent it to someone and never got it back.

Unbreakable is about as up to date as you can get, with the final chapters being about the 2022 Snooker World Championships and references to events in February 2023. It’s a book that really challenges what people think they know about Ronnie, for example that he coasts through everything on sheer talent rather than hard work, that he is in fact hard work, that he doesn’t really care about snooker. This is ghost-written and if you know Ronnie (and I think I do) you’ll hear his voice in your head as you read. Rather than being chronological, it’s broken down into chapters addressing several big elements of his life such as family, running and competition. I really liked this about this book and several anecdotes appeared at times I didn’t expect them to. There are also commentary-style memory dumps from famous matches which give you a real insight into what goes on in the mind of a genius at work.

All of that said, Unbreakable fell a little flat for me. I loved that he challenged what people think of him and I adored the chapter on his running, but I felt it was rather repetitive at times and very mind-wandery which made me think it would have been better not ghost-written. I think to enjoy this you really have to love Ronnie or love snooker or it would potentially lose you in the first few chapters. Luckily I love both which is why I’ve given it three stars.

A topical read at the moment!
Would say between 3 and 4 stars. I enjoyed it for the most part. There was some great insight into the snooker world and into Ronnie himself, his struggles with depression and anxiety, and how he has overcome them with his running and staying away from toxic people that were around him.

I did feel that it did go into some things without giving a lot of detail, and it seemed to jump back and forth at times, which could be a bit confusing!
Also, I didn't really understand as he said he was sober and drug free since 2001, then mentions a few times about having beers and champagne after tournament wins, as recently as 2022? He's entitled to celebrate, of course. I just thought it was a bit contradictory at times.

He comes across better in this book than he does in interviews after some games, most recently after the masters win!
Overall, it was an enjoyable read.

A great read and a good insight into ronnie’s mind, however, he does tend to repeat himself a bit.

I liked this book a lot, I almost never read autobiographies but given my obsession with snooker it was one I was happy to try. It was good to understand from his perspective some of the intense difficulties he's had throughout his life, how thinks and why he is the way he is. I definitely feel like I understand him a lot more and that's nice. I also feel like a lot of his advice was helpful to me and I took a lot of what he said on board, and am aiming to apply it when I have difficulties of my own. I also liked his little segments where he was talking you through a frame shot by shot, those worked really well. If I was to give a negative, I'd say some bits felt a little repetitive, and some bits felt like he was bigging himself up a bit too much, but it IS his book about himself so I suppose that's to be expected and he is the GOAT so maybe that's a little harsh of me. Overall I did enjoy a lot though, something different for me and for anyone who enjoys snooker I highly recommend it.

That was a slog. I understand his perspective and his struggles a little better but it wasn’t an enjoyable read. Just an very extended version of one of his interviews for 200 pages

This was a very nostalgic book pick for me. I used to watch a lot of snooker with my dad and Ronnie was always my favourite player. He was the most exciting player at the time (back in the late 90s, early 2000s). At some point life happened and I stopped watching snooker. So picking this book up was like picking up a part of my younger self.

Little did I know that I started listening to this book just as Ronnie was winning the Masters and this week the World Grand Prix. I ended up watching the latter and it made me realise I still love watching snooker. It’s such an interesting game. I will make an effort to watch more!

Back to the book…. Ronnie wrote this with Tom Fordyce and they have done such a good job, as it definitely sounds like Ronnie’s voice. I really enjoyed the tone of the book. It is casual and engaging. It was a great way to find more about a very interesting human being, someone who has been through a lot, both in life and in his own head. The way he talks about his mental health problems felt so honest, but matter-a-fact as well. Like it is just part of life and the thing is, it IS ‘just’ part of life for so many of us. To hear him acknowledging his issues and talking through the things that have helped him get his mind back on track was really interesting to me. That doesn’t mean he’s ‘cured’, but he definitely seems to have learned how to deal with his demons better.

I learned a lot about Ronnie that I did not really know, and I am glad I picked this one up. I thoroughly enjoyed the listen and I found myself really interested in what he had to say.

I listened to the audio book and the narrator did a great job as well. He made me forget it was not Ronnie narrating. It does not sound like him, but the tone is right. At the end of the audio book there is an interview between Tom Fordyce and Ronnie himself, which really added something to the memoir I had just listened to.

Obviously, this is the kind of memoir that would only appeal to people who are interested in the subject, which I was. I just ended up loving this way more than I expected. It gave such a good insight in the man, but also inspired me to think about the way I deal with my own anxiety. A really good read/listen that I actually got a lot out of.

[Seven Dials] (2023). HB/DJ. 1/8. Illustrated. 262 Pages. Purchased from www.amazon.co.uk.

“There is no one on this planet right now who can compete with me. Eight billion people in the world, and not one of them out there who can knock me off my perch…. I could do the conjuring trick that others couldn’t. I could make people go weak at the knees, and I didn’t even have to think about it… I love that I’ve got to the point where I can make the game look easy… It was frightening, the snooker I was coming out with. I couldn’t believe how well I was hitting the ball. I had every shot in the world… In the last decade I have become the ultimate player…”

“I’m shy. I don’t want to get involved in the drama. I play down my abilities because I’m not a naturally confident person.”

Setting aside the crowing, self pity and inevitable retirement talk (yawn), a fascinating picture’s painted of a sporting legend who’s served up first class entertainment for decades.

Chapter 9 (“Running / Always In My Mind”) makes for odd reading.

There are some weighty statements.

For example, it’s claimed that “Billy Wootton”, a fellow (“…in his fifties…) who was “…a proper good footballer when a kid…”, is now “…banging out ten-milers in forty-nine minutes.” According to the BMAF, the British Age Group Record has been held by Martin Rees (50) since 2003: 50:43.

…and on it goes: “The top boys were flying machines, capable of banging out twenty-seven minutes for 10k. I never got amongst those…” - in 2023, four British athletes beat 28:00, two by <5 seconds. 28:30 was sufficient for the top ten.

He goes on to observe that Eamonn Martin (note, 10 mile PB = 48:45) won the London Marathon: “…the first year he ever ran it…” (it was actually his opening race over the distance), then conceding that he wouldn’t be matching that feat on his debut. You don’t say!

Really enjoyed the behind the scenes glimpses of the Crucible as well as the commentary of a few key frames. I remembered that frame against John Higgins from the 2022 World Championship semi final. If Higgins makes that frame ball black to go 9-7 down instead of 10-6 overnight things could've been very very different. Anyway the commentary from Ronnie's point of view was great. There is a brilliantly edited video of this frame on YouTube also.

I was surprised to see the amount of respect Ronnie has for Higgins and especially Neil Robertson. I thought Mark Selby would've got more of a mention, especially after the 2014 World Championship final, where Ronnie led 8-3, 10-5 (10-7 overnight) before losing 18-14. Not a fan I guess!

Very enjoyable read. You don't have to be a snooker purist, but it would probably help for some parts.

Intriguing

A lot of surprises here stuff I thought I had heard but as usual I had heard it wrong. Do I like R O S more or less reading the book, hard to say really. The idolisation has gone he is not the legendary genius I thought he was the god of snooker. So what is he, it turns out he is a man with problems. He is one of us. And let me say nobody has given me as much pleasure and enjoyment playing the game of snooker as you. And on reflection you are a snooker genius who started with raw natural talent and far from waning that you have sorted your head and become a true force. May you continue as long as it makes you happy I for one will be watching

Firstly, let me make you aware that I have adored this man for decades.
I love his snooker, his look and how he talks openly about the things in his life that perhaps others wouldn't.
I have suffered depression and anxiety after enduring historic systemic abuse.
I was keen to read this book.
The thing which struck me most was, if you find youself in a situation that makes you uncomfortable, in your head rise above and look at the bigger picture. This will help to settle you and let you cope.
I shall be on the ceiling some days at work, depending on who is in the office with me and how they talk to me.

Loved it! Took me back to my childhood days watching Pot Black on TV on a Sunday afternoon. Ronnie O’Sullivan is one of the best ever snooker players and has won seven world championships. But more interesting is that he was the oldest ever to win a World Championship and that he won his seven over a 30 year span. In the book he talks about the snooker but also his family, mental health and dependency issues. He has a very practical approach to dealing with a lot of his personal issues. It would help if you are a snooker fan but this book is much bigger than just snooker.

I was blown away by Ronnie’s sheer tenacity to succeed - whether this be through winning, tactical play or aiming simply just to enjoy the game. Ronnie was upfront about his demons and he spoke openly in the book about how some relationships with certain vices negatively effected him. Ronnie speaks so beautifully about his change in mindset and lifestyle, for instance his love of running which has added purpose and fulfilment. He also isn’t afraid to talk about how much others have influenced his gameplay and he celebrates through gratitude those that have supported him throughout life his and career. Excellent book for snooker lovers or just admirers of those that have excelled in a competitive sport.

I’ve always been a massive fan of Ronnie and I thought this book was a brilliant insight into how he prepares for the world championships and how he deals with everything outside of snooker.

It was also good to see how much time and how dedicated he is to running and how it has a positive impact on his mental health.

All in all a great read if you’re a fan of Snooker, I don’t understand the hate that the book is getting in some people’s reviews, anyone who knows of Ronnie knows he just says it how it is. I would recommend this book to anyone who is into sport!

I wouldn't normally read a sports biography, but then Ronnie is no normal sportsman! I'd recommend for any snooker fan, and especially men who are seeking mental health tips. The latter was the most surprising part, and the refreshing honesty. Being Sheffield born and bred, I also enjoyed his memories of winning at the 'Worlds', at our iconic Crucible, and his running mindset. I've just bought 'The Chimp Paradox' by Steve Peters, as Ronnie really recommends it. I recommend you read this first. A very (surprisingly) good sports biography.

This was okay and I say this as a big fan of Ronnie

As many others have said, it is a bit repetitive. Just by chance really, I watched the Amazon documentary that covers the same time period and for once I have to say I enjoyed that more than I did the book.

Ronnie is without doubt a complex character but I think that came across more insightful in the documentary than it did in the book.

Anyway if you like Ronnie then I am sure you will enjoy it, but as sports books goes it would not be that high on the list for me.

Part autobiography part self help book from world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan.
I'd heard Ronnie doing the rounds of television and radio interviews to promote his book so I thought I'd treat myself to a copy.
I don't think it tells us anything we didn't already know or might have guessed about his life but it's a fairly decent read. Easy to pick up and put down.
A middling sporting autobiography.

3.5 Stars.

Both this and The Edge Of Everything serve as fantastic perspective peices providing insight in the greatest snooker player to ever play the game. Wasn't much of a Ronnie fan beforehand, seen to many antics on and off the table, but now, I understand him more, and as such understand where he's coming from.

A good read if you are eager to get an understanding if a player who, at a glance, seems troubled, is indeed, and only human, yet perhaps much more.

Little bit of everything in the mix - biography, memoirs and self-help. Gives an insight into Ronnie's mind and life philosophy, that's what I liked best. Well delivered by a ghostwriter, it turned out to be quite gripping for me.

Minus one star for: few chapters were unbalanced and chaotic + highly marketed rehab experiences were in reality a dozen of sentences.

Very honest account of Ronnie's life. In his own words Having met Ronnie once in my line of work, he is one of the most genuine people in life. No airs and graces. Puts pressure on himself to be the best. Other people's pressure doesn't help him either. He is one of the greatest snooker players of all time and it's all through his own talent
