With the Skirmish over, Blair finds herself in the New World where things aren’t as simple as they initially seem. The System has been meddled with, tainted to change the outcome of the planet’s fate; introducing a new form of Apex predator. Heralds. The strongest of the Elite Monsters, capable of changing the environment and making their own territory. Heralds, they are the bringers of change, the prelude to something more, and Blair will have to defeat them to grow stronger and establish herself in the New World.
Another stellar read. Our MC is growing up and while some of the choices are still frustrating, she is much more cognizant of them and their consequences. Eager for the next installment.
General disclaimer: I want to be clear in that I do not factor cost into any review and as such, this is simply a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.
A great sequel with a more focused plot than Blooming Apocalypse. I like that there’s a greater emphasis on character development, although I didn’t really understand Elasia’s motivations regarding the Woodland Elves. The pacing is scaled back a bit during the second half, which is much appreciated after hundreds of pages of non-stop action. Most importantly, Azrie does an amazing job of getting you hyped to see the battle between Blair and the dragon in book 3!
The series quickly switched away from "strong, scrappy, struggling in a harsh world" to "trying to remain relevant among more powerful people".
I don't love the change. The setting is not anything novel in this genre, so all it had going for it was following the journey of Blair. Now, Blair's journey is less interesting as she goes from one mentor to the next, just getting advice on how to get to the next step.
The first book was in a sandbox so I was looking forward to seeing more interaction from book two. It went into another sandbox which was disappointing. The little interaction at the end showed very rough transitions and poor writing when dealing with larger groups. This series has some very good characters but this book has shown some severe flaws.
good follow up to the first book. it is a bit disheartening to have an MC that doesnt know what they want. she lacks desire to move forward and really doesnt have many goals
I am truly enjoying this series, the lead character’s growth is felt throughout the series, although she still seems to deliberate a little too much on decision’s while in battle.
