I don't usually "read" a cookbook but this one has commentary to many of the recipes. This is a great book to learn about the Shakers but to also learn some great fresh food recipes. Almost all recipes require fresh ingredients so it is more of a seasonal cookbook. Unlike many modern recipes these are all basic easy to find ingredients. I can't wait to try some of these. I am really looking forward to that lemon pie as most modern lemon pies do not actually have lemon slices in them but only juice from a bottle. I should note that it took me awhile to read only because it incidentally got packed away with some holiday stuff last year.
