Well, I think it's safe to say that I don't really enjoy YA mystery/thrillers. I don't think it's just this one, I think they're just not my cuppa.

This book started out engaging enough but somewhere around the middle I started to lose interest and my mind drifted off. I then just started speeding through to get to the conclusion.

I didn't like any of these characters at all and had a hard time believing that they were actually teenagers.

The book isn't necessarily bad but it really left no impression on me either.

I had so much fun reading The One that Got Away with Murder. I read it in a 24-hour period and clearly, it hooked me.

It was drama-filled, fast-paced and compelling. Exactly how I like my YA Mystery/Thrillers. I can't believe this is a debut!? How is that even true?!

In this story we follow Lauren. a high school soccer star, just about to enter her Senior year. Sadly, she's going to be doing that at an all new school, as she has recently moved with her Mom from California to Happy Valley, Pennsylvania.

Her Mom's long-distance boyfriend lives in Happy Valley, so following a scandal at Lauren's old school, they decide it would be best for them to make a fresh start there.

Lauren understands the reasoning behind the move, but it's still a difficult transition and her new teammates won't be making it any easier on her.

Prior to the school year beginning, Lauren meets a boy, Robbie Crestmont, and the two begin spending time together. Hooking up, may be the most accurate term for their relationship.

Once she begins hanging out with her teammates though, when soccer season begins, she learns that Robbie isn't the most liked guy in Pleasant Valley. In fact, some of the girls are downright hostile towards him.

In fact, they blame him for the death of their teammate, Victoria, Robbie's one-time girlfriend. The story is that Victoria died during a late night swim at the Crestmont's lake house. Her friends and teammates aren't buying the story that it was an accident. They suspect foul play.

Not helping is the fact that Robbie's brother's girlfriend also died a mysterious death about a year after Victoria. Two brothers, two dead girlfriends. That can't be a coincidence. Even Lauren can admit that doesn't seem right.

After agreeing to go visit Robbie's family lake house over Labor Day weekend, Lauren vows that will be the last weekend she will spend with him. While there, however, she discovers some evidence that may just confirm Robbie's involvement in Victoria's death.

Lauren is scared. Does anyone know she found what she found at the lake house? She hopes not.

With dangers around every corner, Lauren is unsure who she can trust. As she navigates between the the powerful Crestmont family and her soccer teammates, Lauren begins to piece together the truth of the two dead girls.

As mentioned above, I had a blast reading this. It's so compelling. It drew me in from the start.

There was something about Lauren's character that vibed well with my tastes. I loved reading from her perspective, and learning about her. She can be a little harsh, a little cold, a little angry, but I like that...

You could tell that something fairly significant had happened in her past, but it was slowly revealed to you over the course of the story, instead of laid on you all at once.

I enjoyed how that was done. I like that Lundy took her time revealing Lauren's full-self. She's a tough girl, but she definitely struggles with a lot over the course of the story.

I also liked Robbie and his brothers. They were extremely wealthy and powerful in this town, but instead of being the revered golden boys, as would typically be the case in these type of circumstances, they were more like social pariahs.

Lauren looking into their family, and others in the town was very interesting and if kept me on my toes. There were plenty of suspicious actors floating about.

It's funny, when I was about halfway through this book, I was having so much fun, I thought, I need to go read this author's previous books! With this in mind, I went to Trish Lundy's author page here on Goodreads and discovered, THIS IS HER FIRST BOOK!?

I was seriously shocked. This is such a well-constructed and thought-out Teen Mystery, IMO. If this is her debut, I cannot wait to watch her career over the next few years.

If you enjoy YA Mystery/Thriller authors such as Jessica Goodman, Karen M. McManus, or Kara Thomas, you have to check this out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Thank you to the publisher, Henry Holt & Company (BYR) and Macmillan Audio, for not only providing me with copies to read and review, but also for introducing me to a talented new author to obsess over!!!

Ok... you was just... OK

The One That Got Away With Murder is following Lauren, who is the new girl in town and is escaping a dark past. She gets involved with a guy called Robbie, but Robbie and his brother Trever don't have the best reputation in town as both of their ex girlfriends had d!ed mysteriously. Everyone in town thinks the boys are smurderers who got away with it, and they are trying to warn Lauren off Robbie. But Lauren has other plans and feels more compelled to really solve the case and find out whether she really is dating a k!iller or is someone else responsible.

This book was not bad but it wasn't groundbreaking either. This is a YA book so i went in with low expectations as this genre can be so hit or miss for me. High schoolers always come across as sooo stupid and naïve, which grates on my nerves because why cant we just have an intelligent put together MC?. I get it that they are young and you want them to come across as 'relatable' but having these dense characters all of a sudden seeming to have the smarts to become a sleuth is so unbelievable and makes me automatically have no interest in their ploy! 😒

⋆。°✩WHAT I LIKED⋆。°✩
➽ Although a lot of characters, because it was told in the POV of Lauren, it was easy to follow
➽ Everyone was suspicious
➽ I semi guessed my prediction.
➽ It definitely read YA and would be enjoyed by a thriller beginner

⋆。°✩WHAT I DIDNT LIKE⋆。°✩
➽ I was bored for the first 45% of the book
➽ I didn't feel a connection with the characters
➽ Nothing was outstanding or that I haven't read in a YA before
➽ The reveal was abrupt and lackluster

I've said it before and I'll say it again, whether you are making your main characters unlikeable or loveable you need to be able to exude a genuine connection between them and the readers. I don't care how 'great' a book is, if i don't care about the characters then i wont care about the story. This was my main issue with this book. Everything felt placed and neatly arranged and not organic.
Also i don't know if its cause i am older or just have common sense, but when i was 17 i can hand on heart assure you that if the guy i was dating at the time was considered to be a smurderer who got away with his crimes, i certainly would not be going away with him on a weekend trip! Everyone BSFFR
I give props to the author making it an easy read and i do think if you are a young adult just getting into thrillers this book would probably WOW you.
So for that reason i would recommend it for the YA demographic.

Est Page Count ~ 376 (62 chapters)
Audio length ~ 8 hours 3 minutes

From California to Pennsylvania ~ Lauren is navigating a new school for her senior year and looking for a fresh start. She's on the soccer team and making new friends, and starts hanging out with Robbie. Come to find out Robbie's last girlfriend has died recently. But wait a minute, his brother's girlfriend is dead, too....hmmm, that's not suspicious at all. 🤔

It’s jammed pack with typical teenageness ~ drinking, drugs, lying to parents and partying.

Do kids these days really drink an old fashioned? I would never have had bourbon back when I was absolutely not underage drinking 😉 I wouldn't even have one now, gross.

Overall, not super surprising stuff happened, but engaging enough. Fine as a debut.

So, Lauren is the new girl in town, from California, trying to leave her troubled past behind. She starts dating Robbie, not knowing about him and his brother Trevor's infamous reputation in the small town. Rumors swirl around them, accusing them of murdering their exes. At first, Lauren dismisses the rumors, knowing that things aren't always what they seem. But as she spends more time with them, she discovers some incriminating evidence that makes Robbie look more than guilty.

Even though I finished reading this book, I'm still struggling to decide how I truly feel about it. It's not necessarily a bad book, but it doesn't really stand out from the crowd either. It falls into the same patterns as other ya mysteries like aggtm and one of us is lying. The thing is, I couldn't connect with the characters as much as I did in those other two books.

Sadly , the ending didn't have the impact I was hoping for. I saw it coming from a mile away, and it felt like I've encountered similar endings in other ya mysteries. While I didn't really connect with the characters, the plot was intriguing and kept me hooked enough to finish the whole book in just one day. If you're a newbie to the ya mystery genre, I would definitely recommend giving this book a read. It will introduce you to all the classic tropes you'll find in ya novels. It's a great starting point!

Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for hooking me up with an early listen to the audiobook!────────

A page-turner!

After experiencing a traumatic event in her past town, Lauren and her mother have recently moved to a new place to start over. Lauren was hoping for a fresh start by keeping a low profile and focusing on graduation. Unfortunately, things aren't going as planned. Lauren's casual relationship with a boy named Robbie has become the talk of the school. To make matters worse, rumors have been circulating that Robbie may have played a role in his ex-girlfriend's death. Now, Lauren is in a tough spot, not knowing whether or not to believe the rumors and if she made a mistake by getting involved with Robbie.

This was an absolute page-turner! The author did an excellent job of keeping me engaged and guessing throughout the entire story. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I do think that the ending could have been more fleshed out. Things did wrap up rather quickly and neatly. Despite this, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling YA mystery or thriller. It's definitely worth a read!

***Thank you to NetGalley, Trish Lundy, and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

Me a month ago: omgg I got the arc! cant wait to read this!
Me now: ITS FINALLY OVER

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group for this arc in exchange for my review! -> Some quotes may be different!

Not my best review but I have no energy to write a good one for this heh

“Every girl the Crestmonts date winds up dead”

This book was… meh. I just couldn’t connect with the characters and the story wasn’t anything memorable and I got so bored.
The way the book was written definitely made me wanna keep reading because Lauren’s (fmc) past kept being mentioned without really giving answers until the end and I was too curious to dnf this (and I would’ve). There were lots of twist and turn and creepy mysteries.

“I will never forget the sounds of Clint’s screams. They were sounds I’d never heard from him before. Sounds I’d never heard from another human before. Sounds I will hear for the rest of my life.”

Lauren was a very fun mc to read about. She’s so sassy and isn’t scared to insult people when necessary. I love that Lauren is solving a mystery while we, the readers, are uncovering hers (and I loved the little investigation gang that was formed 😆)

I love the sabotage hehe. It added more to the story.
Mara’s speech made me tear up and her character development was so good 🥹👌
The characters are honestly very confusing. I could never remember who was who, but maybe that was my fault 😅

Honestly I guessed the ending and all the theories mentioned in the book, I had. And the ending was kinda underwhelming… and there are just better mysteries out there, like I’m sorry, but dont waste your time...
(that was harsh 😭)

Overall this was an ok book. The ending was underwhelming, but the build up was investing. I’m probably gonna forget about it but it was a fun read while I was biking to school. update: I forgot what happened 🤪

When I started this book, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to finish it. It was rather slow, and it took me a little while to bond with the characters. The One That Got away with Murder is Trish Lindy’s first novel, so I stuck with it and I’m happy I did!

Lauren has to move across country. Not because she wants to but because of what happened at a party with her former classmates. But her new town/school has just as many problems. Problems like two brothers who are sons of the wealthiest man in town. These brothers are both thought to have killed their girlfriends and were rich enough to literally get away with murder. The reader follows Lauren as she makes new friends, new enemies and as she is unwillingly drawn into the cases of Victoria and Jessicas deaths. Hopefully she can figure out who the bad guys are before she becomes their next victim.

AHHH this was AMAZING. truly amazing i enjoyed every little bit of this book. it felt so nice not to feel like i was reading a cheesy thriller that was completely predictable and lacked substance. this book gave EVERYTHING.

this book follows the life of Lauren, who moved to Pennsylvania after a fire incident involving her boyfriend at the time, Clint. Lauren starts hooking up with Robbie, an infamous outcast presumed to be involved with the death of his ex-girlfriend, Vic. his brother Trevor was also presumed to be involved in the overdose of his ex-girlfriend, Jess. Nothing is as it seems when another body turns up dead. Who is involved and what was their motive?

if you’re a fan of Holly Jackson, i HIGHLY encourage you to give this book a try. i definitely see this blowing up just like A Good Girls Guide to Murder. the twists and turns were everything; just when you thought you figured it out, another twist is thrown your way. i will never not recommend this book it’s just so well written, i loved all the characters, and it has you on the edge of your seat the entire time. when this is released, BUY IT!!

THANK YOU NETGALLEY AND MCPG FOR A COPY OF THE ARC IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW

The One That Got Away with Murder by Trish Lundy is a debut young adult thriller novel. With this being a young adult thriller it’s certainly on the darker side and probably geared towards to more mature readers the young adult genre with things like drinking, smoking, drug use, sex, eating disorders, suicide and of course murder to name a few.

Lauren O’Brian is the new girl in town after her mother choses to move them across country and away from Lauren’s troublesome past in California. Lauren’s mother has a new boyfriend and Lauren is happy for her but only requests that they wait until Lauren is out of the house to officially move in together.

After moving to her new town Lauren met Robbie Cresmont and has begun a secret affair with him. Robbie volunteers at the same hospital Lauren’s mom works at so she has been meeting up with him there. When words gets out at school though Lauren learns the Cresmont boys have a very dark and dangerous reputation some even saying they have murdered their exes.

The One That Got Away with Murder by Trish Lundy was a solid debut thriller novel but for me it wasn’t without some flaws too. I think the pacing was the biggest thing I noticed with this one with it sometimes crawling along but then when you get to the end it seemed to wrap up really really quickly. The story is one that is typically found in this genre so it wasn’t an overly surprising ending to me being an avid reader but that said I would still rate this one at three and a half stars and give the author another try if she writes more in the future.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Robbie and Trevor Cresmont have a body count, the killer kind. The brothers are privileged, and wealthy, and have never been found guilty of any wrongdoing despite the whole town thinking they’re guilty.

The Cresmont’s aren’t the only ones keeping secrets, and Lauren is all to familiar with them. She has a dark past and is desperate for a clean start. She starts a no-strings attached relationship with Robbie, and on a weekend getaway, ends up finding some evidence that might just implicate Robbie in the death of his ex-girlfriend.

With danger closing in, Lauren isn’t sure who to trust.

This was a wonderfully well-done and nicely written debut YA thriller. I really enjoyed that this book kept me guessing until the very end. I think that the main character, Lauren, was well written. She is so jaded and had a dark outlook on life for a young person, and that was difficult. It’s always hard to see young people who have lived such hard lives. Reading about the dynamics of the soccer team Lauren was on, was perfectly on par for how a group of young women can act. I think at times the character development was a little shallow and could have been more, but it did end up working overall. The pacing of this book was rather quick and kept me turning the pages until the last minute and I loved that about this book. While this wasn’t the story I expected going in, it was a good story and worth the read.

Okay so the red herring(s) got me but I also WASN’T surprised at whodunnit because a part of me was 👀👀👀 I’m considering this a win for me lmao.

When that second narrator popped in???? The chills! I definitely think the audiobook helped up my stress (in a good way, it’s a thriller!), especially at that moment. I was definitely creeped out. Lauren’s narrator was a good fit for the book as well.

The conclusion was a bit rushed and I wanted more of a “why”reveal moment, but overall this was a strong YA thriller with a few different twists that kept me guessing.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/5

I listened to the audiobook of this one and I liked the narrator (even if the character who narrated most of the book was a horrible decision maker). This was a pretty good debut and while I expected a bit more of a thriller from the description the small town mystery was well written with good red herrings and some nice twists. After Lauren made some monumentally poor choices her life in California had fallen apart so she and her mother mother moved to small town Happy Valley where Lauren’s mom’s new boyfriend lived. Lauren is on her new soccer team and feels like things are finally starting to get her. When the team discovers she is talking to Robbie, they make sure she knows that both of the brother’s girlfriends died mysteriously and it is believed that the boys are guilty even though no charges were ever brought against the boys. Lauren is desperate for one more weekend to feel normal and goes with Robbie and his family to their lake house for a weekend. Everything changes when she finds evidence of Robbie’s girlfriend Victoria’s last moments and she is desperate to find out who it was. I can’t say Lauren is a natural investigator but I did like her gumption and persistence. I liked this story and will keep an eye out for more from this author.

This was a YA thriller that did not disappoint. Multiple times during this book, I thought I had everything figured out. Each time, I was wrong, and every time I was the stakes for Lauren and Robbie increased. This ending was by far the most shocking and unexpected.

This YA thriller had just enough unexpected surprises that kept me engaged. It feels like everyone is hiding something as the tension builds. Privilege mixed with murder is a deadly combination. Are the Crestmont brothers as dangerous as the rumors surrounding them suggest? Although it started out slow, the pace greatly picked up halfway as secrets were revealed and the past came back with a vengeance. The narration added a layer of suspense to this original, entertaining thriller. Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my audiobook.

thank you to net galley and the publishers for giving me the arc of the book!!!!! i throughly enjoyed it and could not put it downnn

the books revolves around lauren robbie and trevor solving the murders of robbie and trevor’s ex girlfriends. there are many twists and turns that i did not see coming. however, some of the twists didn’t really make all the much sense— and the mother daughter relationship between lauren and her mother was very annoying.

overall, i enjoyed this book, as it was a quick suspenseful read. definitely worth checking out, despite a few flaws.

A twisting "who is the real killer" story! It kept me engaged and wanting to know the truth. Some thoughts:
*Lauren was pretty dumb when she thought she found concrete evidence and doing nothing about it.
*Her "step family" are just awful people.
*I would not have guessed the true killer. It was kind of left field.
*The adults in this book are all pretty self involved considering there is someone killing girls.

Would recommend.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Macmillan Audio and Trish Lundy for a copy of the book. All opinions are of my own.

This was a great mystery, cold case thriller with some teen romantic vibes. I liked the characters with all of their faults and teenage insecurities. I liked the overall plot and how much it showed that the town had been shaken up by what had transpired. I liked the tragedy aspect- all of the main characters had experienced some form of tragedy and were facing it in there own way. I had a hard time with the "bullying" that occurred, but I guess that is high school for you. I also did not see the ending coming. I do feel like it kind of happened fast which is why this dropped from a 5 star to a 4. I also feel like there was not a ton of explanation as to why the person who had done all of these things did them. It seemed glossed over, but overall this was a wonderful debut!

Lauren O'Brian and her mom have moved to a new town for a fresh start. Lauren is still reeling about how much her life has changed over the past few months, and now she is about to start a new high school in her senior year with her mom getting closer to her boyfriend Mark. No one here knows about the fire that changed her life. Or the boyfriend who she loved but doesn't talk to anymore. Or about any of it. She has found a casual hookup with Robbie which is helping her keep her mind off the bad things. What she doesn't know is that Robbie has his own tragedy that he has faced. A few years ago his girlfriend Victoria drowned at their lake house. The same lake house he has now invited her to come to. The same lake house that people think Robbie killed Victoria at and got away with it. To keep the scandal going, Robbie's brother, Trevor, has also experienced tragedy. His girlfriend Jess also died under the mysterious guise of an overdose.

While at the lake house, Lauren finds evidence on the boat about what might have happened to Vic. Evidence that now has her along with the rest of the town convinced he did it. She doesn't know how to act but decides to continue to keep him close but at a distance so she can help get to the bottom of what happened. What she doesn't realize is how much hanging out with him would affect HER at her new school. Now she finds herself off of the soccer team and having nothing else to do but try to string clues together that maybe all of these tragedies were done by the same person. Now she has received a creepy phone call telling her to back off. Her past has been put on blast for the school to read about. The Crestmonts have experienced yet another tragedy, and yet they are no closer to finding out what happened. But with the newest round of tragedy, Lauren finds herself with a small circle of people willing to help her. They also want to find out what happened and put it behind them. What Lauren doesn't know is that the killer has already set his eyes on her, and formed a plan with how to get away with her murder.

Like I said, this was a great debut! There are mentions of drug use on page, sexual assault (kind of on page), bullying, and other triggering things. I would recommend checking those out before reading this one. As much as I struggled with the killer reveal and that ending, I did like how Robbie and Lauren circled back. They both realized that what they had didn't need to be casual. I liked how they both came to that realization individually and together.

I am looking forward to reading more by Trish in the future! I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, this book surprised me in the end. I was very annoyed in the beginning, particularly by the MC being a complete bonehead. I'll say it again: who in their right mind would WILLINGLY go on a weekend trip w/ the guy they've known for just a few weeks, right AFTER they find out he's suspected of murdering his former girlfriend (at that same lake house). She's the type who'd get murdered first in a horror movie.

But it did get better. The mystery got twistier, and I must admit, I was surprised by the ending. But I still think it needed a little more? I still don't fully understand the motivations behind the murders. And

Interesting and fast-paced! The One that Got Away with Murder was filled with tons of twists that will keep you turning the pages, and it has a lot of elements that I loved in my YA murder mysteries.

OK WHAT I FINISHED THIS IN 3 HOURS. Let me preface by saying I’m not a thriller girl - i love romance and fantasy but this was actually so good, and flowed so well - which is why I finished it in one sitting LOL.

This is also a YA thriller- so it reads like such, and there isn’t any spice or hardcore parts (though there are some trigger warnings: murder, eating disorders, fire, etc)

Lauren and her mom move to Pennsylvania from California after a horrible accident with her ex bf and she thinks it’s going to be a new start - until she ends up getting involved with Robbie - who’s hated by the town because he’s suspected of killing his ex girlfriend - AND Robbie’s brother Trevor’s ex girlfriend, has also died by overdose. What are the odds that she runs away from a crazy situation to end up in another one?

I can honestly say I didn’t see who the murderer was coming, I suspected literally RIGHT as it was revealed LOL. I enjoyed Lauren as a character- she’s definitely jaded and has a darker outlook on life which I can appreciate LOL. I feel like we could have gotten to know Robbie and Trevor a bit more BUT maybe that was the point. The whole girls soccer team annoyed me - I get why Lex and Mara acted the way they did, but the others were just annoying, but then again it is a YA thriller.

3.5 stars, rounded up

This was a solid and entertaining YA thriller. I didn’t like all the casual drug use and a lot (most?) of the characters weren’t likable but I was really interested in the story. I was able to predict the villain, but I chalk that up to me reading a lot of mysteries and thrillers. I’d definitely be open to reading more by this author.

I enjoyed this ya murder mystery. The storyline and plot weren't predictable like murder mystery. I am normally ok with figuring out some of the storyline out, but this one had me puzzled until toward the end when the murder was revealed! And when I say I wanted to throw my phone around the room, because I totally didn't see that coming.

The narrators Helen Laser and Joshua Quinn did a good job bringing this story alive. I wish we did get more of Joshua Quinn talking, but I mean, I understand why we didn't.

Lauren O'Brian is the new girl in town. She is troubled about the previous incident that happened at her old school involving her. She then started a new relationship with Robbie. Robbie and his brother Trevor are accused of killing their previous girlfriends. During Lauren's last weekend with Robbie, she stumbles across shocking evidence that just might implicate Robbie.

This is an edge-of-your-seat debut YA thriller about a teen who is forced to confront her past in order to catch a murderer before she ends up the next victim.

Who really did it?
Several different times I thought I knew who did it….. and boy was I very wrong! I did not see that one coming.
I really enjoyed this book. It was very easy to read and very well written. Until I was in the last couple chapters. I felt like once everything really started happening it was rushed. Still very interesting, but I felt like it could’ve used more detail.
All together, it was a really good book and a great read! I love a good small town, murder mystery, who done it book.

Thank you NetGalley, Macmillan, and Trish for this ARC of The One That Got Away With Murder!

I was SO SURE I knew how this was going to end. But boy was I wrong! I usually at least have a suspicion of someone but this one took me by complete surprise and I’m here for it!

YA novels are hit or miss for me, but this was definitely a hit! It’s sometimes hard for me to imagine teens in these scenarios but maybe that’s just because I’m an old fogey now and I was such a sheltered little naive girl when I was in high school haha

The characters in this novel were well written and unique. And the narrator did a nice job portraying them that way.

Thanks NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the chance to listen to and review this audiobook.
