Unbalanced

I was given an ARC of this book for my honest review. Now that disclosure is out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff.
When I rate books with stars it’s always about how a book makes me feel. Can I picture what I’m reading as I turn every page? Can I relate to the characters as I’m reading about all their traumas or ventures? Well, I can say yes to all the above. This book took me on a rollercoaster of a ride to where I couldn’t stop turning the pages. I had to know more; I needed answers.

Sebastian is one our protagonists who’s morally gray with his actions trying to keep himself in constant balance. (Makes you wonder why the book title is, Unbalanced…doesn’t it) He fights against demons his sole mission in life until he meets a human, Lucy.
Lucy is our second protagonist, a psychiatrist who’s past is filled with nothing but pain. She dedicates herself to helping others; as someone once did for her. An event happens that brings her and Sebastian together and now everything they both though they knew has been thrown into chaos. (Maybe sexy chaos but I’m not telling 😉)
How else can I convince you this book is worth reading and deserving of these stars? I know, how about the final few sentences in the authors note at the beginning of the book? Evie Black wrote, “Enjoy the lie while you can. You have been warned.” Now tell me after all this it doesn’t make you want to grab the book and read it. Trust me, this book is amazing and when you do go get this book, enjoy!

Demons and angels two halves that were never meant to make up a whole person…gahhhh!!!!! Sebastian is a bit of an outcast, seen as an abomination. He’s Tasked with taking care of a rouge demon whose drawn to our fmc Lucy.
I will say to check your tw while I don’t think there are many tw’s I know that there is mention of bpd which I think was handled with care. ( but I can not speak in the bpd rep as I do not have the disorder).

Think you've read a book with twists before? Well, I can promise you, that it doesn't even compare to the level of twisted that is this book. I won't give too much away but I will say that you will have questions and the answers you receive are not what you will expect. AT ALL! We have a strong-willed FMC and a moody-ass and brooding MMC with some amazing side characters that deserve the MC slot. Oh and our villain! They're so evil it will make you question your alliance with the good guys. This book will take you through a whirlwind of emotions, but you will love every second of it as I did. Can't wait to read it a second, third, fourth, and FIFTH time!

This unique story drew me in at the beginning with the promise of demons, angels, demon hunters, and more. The story follows Sebastian, the demon hunter, who is sent to help Lucy who is being stalked by a demon. Sebastian with Bravas and Esther must help protect Lucy but this ends up being no easy feat. The twists and turns that this story took toward the end really surprised me and keep me reading chapter after chapter. An easy 5 star read for me.

Man there is so much to talk about this book where to beginning right from the beginning of the book to the end you hear about Sebastian all the things that he does to what has happened with his family and the also with Lucy you learn everything about her like the fact of her losing her parents her child and her husband and not being able to have another and in the book you do find out why and who is the one that caused all of this the one person I wan not liking as much is Tristan man he is bad like all the stuff he has done to everyone and why this was a great story and in the book you meet Leona and Tristan has hurt her really bad but we need to know what happened to her I can’t wait for book 2 I will be stalking my inbox and amazing as this is a book that needs to be in your hands

I received this book as an ARC from Ms. Black. It was great and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The characters were unique and interesting. They had me rooting, and wanting to smack them when they were being stubborn.
It was an interesting story, unlike any I've read recently. The closest I can think of, and it's primarily only because of the snark and adult content, is Thirst by Christopher Pike, which happens to be my favorite vampire related story of all times.
I am definitely going to be recommending this one to anyone who enjoys fantasy set in the real world that has lots of sass and spunk, as well as loads of spice.
Cannot wait to read more!

Demons, witches, shifters, and more!
This book had so many cool things! The tumultuous relationship between the two main characters kept me guessing. Plus, there are a lot of interconnected dynamics, too. I love me a nasty demon villain! And, of course, there’s a lot of intrigue in the twists and turns.
If you like spicy paranormal romance, you should check it out! Also, if you like Van Helsing, this one is for you!

Loved it!
Now on to book two and to hear up for book three. I grew up faith religious, so the aspects of angel and demons have always fascinated me. However, I like fictions versions better. I loved Sebastian and our fmc stories. While we haven’t gotten one yet, they both deserve an HEA!

I was given this book for my honest opinion.
Unbalanced has everything that you want in a book. Plot, tension between characters, and steam!
The characters are well-rounded and likable. Well at least some of them! We won't talk about a certain antagonist. ;)

Sebastian is part Demon and part Angel. And there is a constant struggle to maintain balance. Hence the title. While he has it under control for the most part, what he doesn’t expect to tip the scale is Lucy.
Lucy is a therapist who’s lived a life full of loss and heartache. But after her own experience, she found she wanted to make a difference like her therapist did for her. The idea of falling in love or even an attraction has become foreign to her. That is until Sebastian.
This book was impossible to put down. The further along I read, the more involved I became. It has paranormal beings, magic, romance and some steam. What more could you possibly want?!?
I will say while I appreciate the spice, I also find that plot is so important. I’m not trying to read straight “corn.” So finding a book that allows both is always a bonus for me. There are a few spicy scenes that are absolutely HOT. And there are others where the act is indicated but fades to black. It was placed where it was “needed” and not pushed every single chapter.
The side characters are fun! I absolutely LOVE them and honestly kind of want a spin off of Bravas and Esther. I can feel they’re being more to that story. These characters played such a crucial part in the story and I enjoyed the banter between them. Literally polar opposites in every sense but bonded.
Overall I have high hopes for anything else that may come from this author. I’m interested for sure. I would def recommend this book. It was an excellent read.

I love a book that I end up loving more and more the further along I get. Unbalanced is Evie Black’s debut novel and the first book in the Agents of Balance and Chaos series. At first glance I thought Unbalanced had similar vibes to Shadowhunters so that got my attention. The twists and turns had me hooked. Bravas is everyone’s book best friend. Evie Black’s disclaimer got me in a chokehold. Yes! Please rip my heart out and tear it to ribbons. I feel like Unbalanced gave us a taste for the real tragedies that are going to occur in book 2. I can’t wait!
Spice level (1-5): 🌶️🌶️🌶️

This book is a mash up of Lucifer, Agents of Shield and Supernatural. This story follows Lucy, a therapist who’s life has been filled with numerous unforeseen loses. However, her world is turned upside down when a demon enters her house, causing her to come in contact with the Demon-Slaying Organization and Sebastian a half-demon, half-angel who is assigned to protect Lucy. Everything goes awry as a begrudging attraction forms between Lucy and Sebastian as they unearth a malicious plot caused by unseen forces.
Overall, as a debut novel it was a solid story. I LOVED Ester & Bravis. They were my favorite characters adding levity, heart and depth of the story. The backdrop of the demon slaying organization reminded me of a supernatural powered agents of shield, with plenty of characters for more stories in the future.
On to Lucy and Sebastian.
I really enjoyed Sebastian, especially the ending. He evolves from a closed hearted anti-hero to a man able to access a greater depth of feeling with wants more complex than he originally realized. He like most book boyfriends hits the mark for the genre:
Broody, growly, a bit positive and a constant need to remind everyone that Lucy is his.
Lucy also showed growth from being more passive to learning to fight and really stand up for herself. In the end she came into her own, and survived a slew of obstacles from the story.
My main reason for giving this book a 4 out of 5 was the pacing. I think there were opportunities in some chapters to steam line some of the content. I also would have liked to see more showing and less telling.
Solid first book and I look forward to seeing how the author grows as a writer.
Overall, as a debut novel it was a solid story. I LOVED Ester & Bravis. They were my favorite characters adding levity, heart and depth of the story. I could not put this book down!
Definitely check trigger warning before reading, it does get really dark at times, but in my opinion it’s handled very well.
This book gave me emotional whiplash, “oh yay, they saved the day!-psych!”
The main female character Lucy is super lovable, Sebastian however, I struggled to really like by the end of the book, I’m guessing this was intended and we’ll either love him more in the next book, or maybe I just hold grudges. It’s not even that I hate him, he just gets on my nerves so often, granted I believe that is what the author intended so bravo there, lol! But thanks to Lucy’s background as a physiologist she wasn’t always quick to forgive either and quickly calls him out, which makes me love her even more.
I really appreciate the focus on how much work goes into healing from trauma, rather than just brushing over it. I was crying with Lucy at so many points.
Their two companions Bravas and Esther have my whole heart.
The only complaint (that’s not really against the book, it’s just not my preference) I have is the ending “plot twist” where the “impossible” happens, I saw it being hinted at quite a few times before hand and was really hoping I was wrong, but that’s simply because I’m not a fan of that kind of trope, it was written really well, so absolutely nothing against the book or the writing, just not my cup of tea. I KNEW I would love this book the moment I read the synopsis, and I was right!
Sebastian is one of my favorite characters I've ever read, what a fantastic idea! He is half demon, half angel, and the nature of his two halves are constantly at war with each other. He is thousands of years old with only one mission in life: to kill other demons.
That is until he meets Lucy.
Lucy is a run of the mill human. She has experienced a lot of loss in her life, and copes through her work as a psychologist. One night she is woken by a demon in her bedroom, calling her name. The next thing she knows she's whisked away to safety by a secret society whose purpose is to kill demons. But there is something different about this demon, and Lucy.
Sebastian and his wonderfully entertaining guardians Esther and Bravas are drawn to Lucy instantly. She was supposed to be a job, but she becomes so much more.
The slow burn between Sebastian and Lucy was so hot and satisfying! The spicy scenes were worth the wait! I also loved how the relationship developed between Lucy and the guardians Esther and Bravas. In my opinion found family is the best family. I think the plot was well developed and our villain demon wasn't simply a mindless creature. We got to see his point of view and learn his motivations. He is scary, intelligent, and powerful. Sebastian and his crew have their work cut out for them for sure!
I highly recommend this book, I cannot wait to read the next one!

The slow burn between Sebastian and Lucy was so hot and satisfying! The spicy scenes were worth the wait! I also loved how the relationship developed between Lucy and the guardians Esther and Bravas. In my opinion found family is the best family. I think the plot was well developed and our villain demon wasn't simply a mindless creature. We got to see his point of view and learn his motivations. He is scary, intelligent, and powerful. Sebastian and his crew have their work cut out for them for sure!
I highly recommend this book, I cannot wait to read the next one!

Unbalance by Evie Black is their debut novel and the first book of the Agents of Balance and Chaos series. This book was amazing from start to end. The plot was great and the character were so well made, they were likable but they weren’t perfect and that made the book even better. The world building was amazing and I was never lost or confused about it. The relationship was also really good and even though they were toxic at times they still tried to become better for each other and become amazing together. The spice was also really good, they’re chemistry was through the roof from the beginning. I loved the friendship that blossomed between Lucy, Ester and Bravas it was so hearth warming. Bravas was my favorite character, I loved his sense of humor and how he made everything into a joke but when he had to be serios he was. I I seriously can’t wait to continue this series and see what else Evie Black has in store for us. I absolutely recommend this book and hope everyone gives it a chance because it is an amazing book!

This book is actually 4.5 ⭐️ but since you can’t rate it like that I have to write it. 🌶️🌶️🌶️ for the spiciness. The story doesn’t revolve around it. Sebastian is dramatic but I love that about him. Lucy is definitely stronger than she thinks. I love how she is enraptured by Sabastian. Esther one of the grigori is a walking RBF but her heart is in the best place. Bravas we love him. The banter and jokes this grigori has is impeccable to say the least. Then there’s Tristan! The biggest spoiled cry baby of a demon I have ever read! We don’t like him! He acts like the most entitled little shit possible 🤣.
Sebastian has is moments but that’s what makes him who he is. When he finally lets Lucy in all the magic happens. These 2 were meant for each other. However, Sebastian constantly lets his head get in the way of things between them and that’s what makes him so dramatic.
Esther and Bravas grow to love Lucy as well and see her as part of the family. They do something to ensure Lucy stays protected at all costs.
This is definitely a good fantasy romance. One I enjoyed a lot and because of Bravas got some good laughs in as well. This a book you should read if you enjoy these genres.

I really thought I would have liked this book, however. I found that as I was reading. I was getting really frustrated with the hot and cold of Sebastian and the entire relationship. I was also really annoyed by the fact that Sebastian didn't want to have sex with her, yet she kept pushing. Then when they kind of got together, Sebastian then said that he knew that this was a big mistake and they should have never done it in the first place, which left me like bruh. You serious? Then I started to get annoyed with Lucy, because of how she was acting very naive, very desperate and overall just overly forgiving, and I wanted to slap her a little bit. Then it went from annoyance to frustration to after she got kidnapped and came back. And then nobody could find her, and then it went kind of all over the place that Sebastian was being held in somewhere for by the Council. And then he suddenly leveled up in power to beat the guy and then it started to get a little bit all over the place and was testing my patience. Then to sum it up the demon who was the cause of all of this didn't even die because Sebastian didn't kill him and left him there to die naturally and he got something to revive himself. So the fella escaped and nobody knows where he is and he still wants revenge. Nonsense!

This book was somewhat outside my usual genre, so I'm probably not a good judge of the spice level, but to me, it was *quite* spicy. Ghost Pepper spicy, in fact. Sebastian and Lucy have instant chemistry, and this is augmented by Sebastian's two faithful Grigori. The burgeoning bond of friendship between Lucy, Esther, and Bravas was one of my favorite aspects of the book. I also love how there's magic and action on every page.
There are trigger warnings for this book, and you should definitely be mindful of them. However, if you go in prepared and you enjoy paranormal romance, this is a book you'll want to devour!

OMG READ THIS BOOK!!!!
I follow Evie on TikTok and love her videos. Her videos on her book sounded good so I bought her book and I read it in two and half days (probably would have been less but this girl has stuff to do!)
First off, world building amazing! Character building…even better!
Sebastian is a half angel half demon who is to protect Lucy, a human, who was attacked by a demon in her house. He is attracted to her but does the jerk move, I want you now go away but come back. She is always like what is going on with this? I just want you!
Now the two side characters…OMG! Esther and Bravas are awesome. They are Sebastian’s protectors since he was a child. Bravas is hilarious always calling him daddy and when they realize he really likes Lucy he starts calling her mommy. At one point Lucy and Sebastian are fighting and Bravas announces mommy and daddy are home and fighting. Yeah two Christmases. He is just insane! Bickers with Esther all the time too.
You have to read this book it is great!!!!! I don’t want to give a lot away!!!

This is my first book by Evie Black and I have to say she really has a way of sucking you into her story until the very end. This book truly has it all; magic, demons from h3ll, spice, angels from above, a story line that just sucks you in and has you wanting so much more.

Sebastian has been around for a long, long time and has always fought to keep the balance of good and evil in place. Then he meets Lucy.

If you like slow burns with angels, demons, and magic this book is for you!
I had trouble at first getting into the book. Keep with it and give it time! I am so glad I did. I am a person who can usually predict what is going to happen but with this book I did not! There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming. There was drama, humor, and excitement throughout the book.
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there were times that the story jumped around or mentioned things that weren't explained. For instance the Grigori were not really explained in the beginning when they were first mentioned. I spent several chapters going okay but what in the heck does that even mean. I'm just a little impatient LOL
All in all I really enjoyed the book and can't wait for the next installment of the series!!!!!!

I absolutely loved this book. The writing is very good and keeps your attention from start to finish.
I loved the characters and the story line.
Lucy, the MFC, is a human woman who gets thrown into a new world. A world full of supernatural beings. She has a powerful demon that is after her. Sebastian, the MMC, is part of the Guardian Elite force who is tasked with protecting humans all over the world. He is an angel/demon hybrid that hunts and slays demons with his two Grigori, Esther and Bravas. He has been assigned to protecting Lucy and banishing the demon that is after her.
He is drawn to Lucy and is fighting his two natures for balance because her presence is making him feel unbalanced.
This books has trigger warnings right at the start. It has some good fight scenes and a spice level of 3.5.
Definitely worth the read.

This book has the best of both worlds, angels and demons well hello Sebastian who is half and half. He's been around for years and years, along with his organization, making sure mankind and supernaturals are safe and sound. He has a new assignment which is keeping a human woman safe and exterminating the demon living in her house. But this turns out to be a lot more difficult than what he's used to, both of those tasks. Lucy has had a lot of pain and heartbreak in her life and when she's being hunted by a demon in her own house, she escapes and finds herself being protected by Sebastian. The tension and chemistry between those two is of off the charts. They push and pull, well mostly Sebastian but i loved it. The twists and turns in this book are amazing, it keeps you wanting more and more. I'm very excited to read more of this supernatural world and all their secrets.
