Stones & Curses #3

Marked for Ruin

Rate this book

Hey… it’s Nora. Again. And this time, I’m in way over my head.

The jinn are being hunted right and left, and as their unwitting leader, that paints a sparkly neon target on my back.

Yay, me.

The druids are my biggest threat—dark sorcerers who fuel their filthy magic by feasting on the souls of others like they’re at an all-you-can-eat buffet. As for me, well… I’m the main course.

But I’ve got news for them. This jinn is off the menu because I’m done running.

Rafe and I are finally on the same page and although I want nothing more than to get lost in those depthless grey eyes, we’ve got work to do. He’s sacrificed so much to ensure my survival but the other jinn doubt my ability to lead and what’s worse, I’ve gone and allied myself with the fae.

The fae!

They’ve forced me to see the cost of the druids' magic—a plague of darkness spreading across the land. If left unchecked, it will consume everyone and everything in its path.

And the only one powerful enough to stand against them? The one with an actual chance at making them pay?

You guessed it. Me.

This is the third and final book in an all-new urban fantasy series: Stones & Curses. It’s got dragons, fae, vampires, jinn, shifters, and a whole lot more. If you love fierce heroines, heart-pumping adventure, a hint of swoony romance, and lots of mind-bending twists, then this is the series for you!

First - I loved this book!

Second - It's over? How can it be over? I love Nora and Rafe, and I'm not ready to let them go.

Third - There's a bonus chapter? Yaaassss! I can't wait to read it, and I'm super excited to dive into Jessa's story. Can I have it now?

Until I read Wished Marked, I had no idea I needed jinn in my life, but it turns out I did. This entire series has been a breath of fresh air. They are quick reads that leave me feeling rejuvenated.

Nora is a fun main character, and the side characters are perfection. Selma with her hard outside and soft and squishy insides is a great counter to Nora who shows everything she's feeling.

Rafe is your next book boyfriend. He's strong, handsome, and protective.

Cora is the familiar that I didn't know I needed until I started this series. She is a bundle of sweetness wrapped in a decaying body. I love her!

If you love urban fantasies, be sure to pick up this series. You won't regret it!

Thank you to Lissa Bolts for providing me with a digital copy of this book. This is my honest review.
-
My favorite thing about the Stones and Curses series as a whole is the pacing and the world. Just when you think everything might be okay, some more off the wall magical shit bowls you over! I’ve never been so excited to be so anxious 😂 The world building just ups the ante! Lissa Bolts is amazing at blending modern elements with traditional fantasy and it’s a blend I can’t get enough of.
-
This even applies to the Stones and Curses characters! What can I say? I’m a sucker for magical beings who have a proclivity for the word asshole and I’m not afraid to say it 🗣️ I loved watching the slow build of Nora’s powers. There’s always something new to learn about her as an individual and about her abilities. The world could be in literal flames and she’d still come at you with a quip. She’s a resilient, funny as hell badass and I think I might be in love 😂
-
We get to spend more time with Rafe in this book and I loved every second of it. Get you a jinn who will fight whole ass armies for you but will also tuck you into bed gently 🤌🏽 I love that the romance in this series is just as strong as in other fantasy romances, but it’s also deliciously understated. Big declarations of love are cool and all, but have you ever loved someone so deeply that they become your safe space? Rafe and Nora’s love is made up of little moments and a mutual willingness to defend each other always. I. Love. Them. 😭🖤
-
Am I sad that I’ve reached the end of this series? Yeah, but I also really enjoyed how it came to a close. And I find comfort in knowing that I might get glimpses of these characters in Lisa’s upcoming series. If you’re looking for a fast-paced urban fantasy full of magic, love, and some kick-ass-ery, the Stoned and Curses trilogy is a definite read!

As usual, in Lissa's best fashion, Book 2 left us on a cliffhanger. We lost connection with the familiars, but like that wasn't enough, Lorath was attacked and Nora went into Avatar mode and destroyed all the wraths. Yeih, right? Well, yes, but without familiars and with the loss of some loved ones, in addition to having used the source of the Jinn's magic, which could have killed them.
Unintentionally hurting people was my worst nightmare. It had been my life for about as long as I could remember. I was finally free of my course only to be bound to all of... this.
Let's say Nora is not happy with her achievement. She feels guilty for failing her people, and worse, her people blame her too. Furthermore, the druids are determined to finish the task of completely annihilating the jinn race once and for all.
My reign of terror lasted about a day until it had all blown up in my face and we'd found ourselves in this current delightful situation.
One of the things I like the most about this series is Nora's personality. Clearly we are facing a case of "reluctant hero", but her constant sarcasm means that, even being probably the most powerful being on earth (and on non-earth) she does not feel disproportionate. It doesn't bother me, at least.

Besides, her inner monologues are gold.
The sweats he'd scrounged up for me were a few sizes too big, but I was just glad that I was finally starting to feel warm again—which had everything to do with these super-great, very dry clothes and nothing to do with the way he was looking at me.
Right? Right.
I loved seeing a good development of the ending. It has happened to me with many series of this style, that we reach the end expecting a monumental battle, and everything deflates. I didn't feel that at all in this book. The ending felt perfect.
But I did have plans.
Big plans.
I was going to save them all. I held the future of the jinn in my hands.
And because of that, I had to do something bold.
And well, I'm officially back to loving Rafe. I think that in the second book he had already got me back, but in this one he is wonderful.
"We'll make it through this, Knocks. And then our real future begins."
Although he has a red flag hanging on him constantly for drugging Nora 🤔…and he should probably go to anger management, but he makes good sandwiches 😅.
He stiffened. "No."
Look at that. His favorite word was back.
Another thing that I loved is the interaction with other realms. There's a lot going on in this book, but it doesn't feel like it's extremely fast-paced and keeps you hooked the whole time.
He was unconscious. Unconscious or... or... something.
I wasn't putting the alternative into the universe by giving it a voice.
He had to be alive.
That was the end of it.
I also liked that after everything that had already happened, there were still a significant number of revelations or plot twists that made it even more entertaining and interesting.

Special mention to the familiars, who are not only adorable, but are a real contribution to Nora's badass look. Also mention for Selma, the incredible bitch—Sorry, I meant witch.
I looked back at Selma, unsure of what to do. She just shrugged like the helpful witch she was, while taking a generous sip from her spiked mug.
I should add that I NEED a spin-off of the story of Nora's parents. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'll leave it there. Read the book and you will understand me.

This series is definitely going to my favorites. And Lissa is established as one of my favorite authors, because the two series that I have read (Ruling Magic and Stones & Curses) have been wonderful and memorable for me. I recommend both infinitely.

PS: I still love Rik more #SorryNotSorry

Marked for Ruin by @lissabolts
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
Steam: Dumped into melted chocolate and sprinkled with sugar – that’s how sweet it was.
Genre: Romantic Fantasy

“I care about you. I care about what happens to you. I want to keep you safe and protected because the mere thought of you getting hurt makes me murderous because I…”

“Aww,” I cooed. “The witch in charge isn’t supposed to catch feelings for the little orphan jinn.”

As you might have already guessed, I loved Marked for Ruin as much as I loved the previous books. Really enjoyed the whole world building and character growth throughout the trilogy. In the end, all of my questions got answered. If there are any loose ends I’m oblivious to them. For once I feel like I got a satisfying ending— the first two books left me baffled to say the least. I am so damn glad there wasn’t a big ass cliffhanger at the end of this one, because I wouldn’t have survived it.

Nora is done running from her enemies, but Rafe refuses to let her fight. Not given the chance to truly prepare several jinn in Lorath that disagree with Nora’s status among them take matters to their own hands. While Nora has got a sense of how her powers work she’s struggling with her depleted magic reserves that have no time to restore themselves after she’s thrown into more dangers and rescue missions while trying to earn the trust and respect of her people.

“Nora, we need to have a serious chat about the types of things that fit the description of vitally important details.”

The only place where I felt like the plot was a bit rushed was before the last battle when preparations were being made. I wanted to know more about certain aspects of jinn power that ended up being the key strategy in the fight and it was skimmed over. I also would have loved to see more of the actual fighting. That being said, the conclusion was satisfying and everything up to that point was gripping. I never wanted it to stop. I got a hint that there’s a bonus Rora chapter on the author’s website so I’m gonna go and stalk her now.

Lissa you've done it again!! Absolutely in love with this book and everyone in it!

Nora has to deal with everything in this one including her new found title. Annnnnd of course there are some objections to it but I love how they get dealt with later 😂. She also has more encounters with Claire and finds out some things about her parents that I didn't actually expect. It makes sense though looking back, because really she is able to do a lot more than the other with so little experience. There are also some people that come back in this one that were in the first book and I love the banter that happens because of it, especially with certain fae 😏. Nora acknowledges just how bizarre everything is and that she is doing way too good at everything but that doesn't stop her from taking charge and pulling everything off in a way that I didn't expect. Really thought there'd be more death but what she opts for instead is kinda fitting given what the enemy thrives on.

Now onto the others. I LOVE SELMA SOOO MUCH!!! Honestly, until I read Jessa's series, she's probably my favorite side character so far. There is tons of her and she has a bigger part in this and a bit of her history is revealed, really hope she's in the other series and that she gets expanded in in general!!

Rafe, rafe rafe rafe. He is more active in this and does not do anything sketchy this time 😂. Y'all will love him more in this after the rollercoaster Lissa took everyone on for him in the last two. He again lets her shine and acts all grumpy, especially around the wolves, but he's a loveable grump.

Every side character in this is great, even Justice, who I thought I'd always dislike. Bailey and Cora too are so adorable and I want more of them 😭. Fives across the board for this series overall and I can't wait for the next series to start!!

It's been a Nora type of week, and I have no complaints. Us Nora's have to stay strong! We find this particular Nora in over her head and getting buried. I was super glad the gang reunited for one more awesome book. It was great to see familiar faces and meet some new friends along the way. Nora is her snarky and sarcastic self, and as usual, full of pop culture references and sass. She's taking no survivors on her quest for the jinn people.

Rafe, our broody badboy, plays an excellent side kick this turn. He gives Nora her pedestal, and I loved him for it. The rip roaring series ended on a high note for all players. The set up for a spinoff and more possible future stories in the world has me turning my follows on for this author!

Yet another amazing finale for another series by Lissa Bolts!

In the finale of the Stones and Curses series, Nora Black, our sarcastic heroine with jokes up her sleeve at every turn, is now the leader of the jinn. Whether or not people are happy with this, is something you’ll have to read in Marked for Ruin. She faces the druids, an old, vengeful, and dangerous enemy. And despite everything she’s gone through, from wishes nearly costing her everything, to channeling a power that rallied more people than she could count, Nora is ready to face it all.

The romance between Nora and Rafe was always something I looked forward to, and it was nostalgic to see that Rafe was still the same brooding, overprotective, and all knowing of the Nora Black. And her being the comic relief to all the doom and gloom in his life was relieving to say the least.

Marked for Ruin really tied everything together—the romance that had me giggling to myself while my family looks at me like I’m nuts, the history of Nora’s family, and Rafe teaching her everything he can (or is willing to), and let’s not forget the friends she made along the way (despite how many of those friendships started is another story)

And just like with every book Lissa writes, I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. ☺️

I am grateful to have received an ARC copy of Marked for Ruin, and would highly recommend you read this finale of Stones and Curses. Especially if you’ve already read Wish Marked and Soul Marked, books one and two. Thank you again to the author for providing me a copy!

Things are absolutely out of control. What's even worse for Nora? She's now the essem of the Jinn. The leader. The head honcho. And absolutely underprepared for the role. The druids are wrecking havoc with their dark magic, destroying the place she now calls home. Her people are threatened, and the only person with the power to stop them is her.

And the fae? Yeah, she's gone and made a deal with them. Or two. That might have been a mistake, but with her two familiars, three lines worth of Jinn magic at her disposal, and a broody boyfriend, she can handle them. Probably.

Either way, those druids are going down. This essem is ready to kick some butt.

Where do I even begin with this book—no, this series? I don't read a ton of urban fantasy, but Lissa is an absolute worldbuilding wizard. The concepts she's created for this are not only unique but just absolutely mind blowing. There's ALWAYS a new twist, and this book kept me on the edge of my seat, clinging for dear life, until the very end. I love Nora and her sass. Her character arc was fantastic, and the side characters are certainly ones you'll be attached to right from the beginning. I was in panic mode watching the final battle play out (no spoilers!) and my poor poor heart. And Rafe! OH MY GOSH. Rafe and his broodiness. SO GOOD. An epic conclusion to an amazing trilogy. I can't wait for what comes next.

I couldn't wait to start this. Marked for Ruin releases April 30th and is the final book in the Stones and Curses trilogy.

If you love sassy, sarcastic FMCs, brooding delicious "protect her at all costs" MMCs and a really fun magic system (jinn, vampires, werewolves), pick these books up!

We start right where book 2's insane cliffhanger leaves off. I love Nora's character and her growth throughout the whole trilogy has been amazing. Learning to trust herself, coming into her true power, becoming the leader she was meant to be, finding her found family, it's all the best parts of a fantasy novel.

Rafe is just well, Rafe. The way that he just shows up for Nora and is willing to sacrifice himself for her and hurt anyone who even looks at her in a way he doesn't like, *fans self*. He's a man after my own heart 😍
While there isn't any spice or super sappy romance, you can't help but love them together. It's the kind of romance that is so full of understanding and love, it doesn't really need to be put into words.

Oh and her familiars? The cutest things ever! Bailey, our perfect adorable darkling dog, and Cora, our sweet, loving, scary zombie looking kelpie. I LOVE them.

This was so fast-paced, full of action, and had a ton of laugh out loud moments. I am so sad it's over but loved the way this ended.

Book #3 - Marked for Ruin - is an amazing finale for the series, loved it, have a book hangover from it! With mortal enemies out to get her, Nora has to decide - give herself up to the druids or find another way. Never before has the Chosen One trope been OTTd with a vengeance like that. Nora continues to bumble through situations following seemingly poor choices but these net her great alliances. Her & Rafe finally get it together, but she still does what she thinks best without telling him half of it (which annoyed me to no end but Rafe seemed to be forgoving); and it’s fade to black, you’re all warned. Loved the fact that so much action was packed into this book yet the author managed to close all the open story loops. Adored the Snow White solution of freezing someone in time to heal them and the Alexa analogue for jinn magic books called Patricia - brill! Can’t wait to see what Nora’s BFF Jess is up to in the next series, so if you love this, there’s a spinoff coming.

If you like Rachel Rener’s Inked & Gilded blood series, you’ll love this series. Recommended for lovers of kickass heroines (who are a bit too sacrificial) in NA paranormal fantasy, the jinn community and dry NYC humour.

Nora is back! This time she is more powerful, more confident, and braver but still funny and stubborn.
Marked for Ruin is the 3rd and final installment of the Stones and Curses Series. This part of the series is focused on Nora’s quest to rescue the other jinn and protect her line from the druids. She had a bit of a struggle at first because not all jinn is ready to accept her. But she stand on her ground and proved to everyone that she is their essem whether they like it or not.
I love how Lissa describes the magic every time Nora uses it and the same with the dark magic in the story. It’s fascinating to picture each scene as if it is right in front of me. The author also brings you to a different realm. She describes everything perfectly. No boring parts, and no unnecessary details. Each description feels right and is essential to the story.
I have held firm on my belief since book one that this series would make an excellent film. It will be amazing to see each location and character on the big screen. As always, five stars!
PS. Cora is so adorable.

I absolutely loved this series! I really liked the world building with will all the different races, their own intricate politics and lore behind them. There were so many details included but not one did it feel overwhelming, the right amount of detail to create interest.

I loved the relationship between Nora and Rafe, with their constant push and pull as they went through different situations. Literally such a fun couple to watch their progress how how they grow stronger together.

I love how strong willed Nora is, and that she’s not afraid to go out and fight the bad guys on her own. But there’s always such an amazing support team that has grown around her to support her when she needs.

Also I think that Selma, is one of my favourite characters. I just love her sass and bitchiness, but her underlying heart of gold to help. Amazing work as always!

I couldn't be anymore excited for this book. The final book of the Stones and Curses series and it was a magical end.

From the very first book I was hooked with Nora and Rafe. I love their banters and sarcastic/smart ass remarks with each other.

I really enjoyed this book and in a way it did leave you with a bit of a cliffhanger but Lissa was nice enough to share a bonus chapter and a short story of one of the characters. Lissa you really couldn't help yourself with those cliffhangers could you? 🤣

I want to add that I loved and laughed so hard at the Avatar reference:

“And I got really mad when she started killing people. I snapped, went into Avatar Aang mode, and fried some of her blood-sucking friends to a crisp. Then she left.”

This was just one of many in the series of pop culture references in this series.

This is one of the best series I’ve ever read. Nora, the protagonist, has the sense of humor I love; sarcasm, but not in a mean, bitter way. She’s smart and has a big heart. And she had no idea that magic exists. I loved how the author was constantly imagining a wide variety of characters. And the story seemed to move forward with ups and downs and so many emotions, but in a beautifully organic way. There was magic I haven’t seen in any other book, as well as new, different creatures. The books really were fascinating. It’s a good thing that I’m retired, because I found it almost impossible to put the book down, whether it was book 1, 2, or 3. And I didn’t notice any errors. This series was a delight to read. My next book will be authored by Lissa Bolts.

OMG this book. I loved it from the very first page. This entire series has just been perfection and I couldn't get enough of it. Nora is just absolutely badass, I did not see that twist coming. It was so good and that ultimate Avengers moment, yesssss
Absolutely loved it.

I love that Nora finally opened up to Rafe. I love that she finally understood him and why he did what he did. I love that he loved her even for all her mess. Nora's chaotic energy is so contagious, you just can't help but love her. I'm so happy she got the family she deserved. Absolutely adore this series and will be thinking about it forever.

Let’s be real, my love affair with Lissa’s writing should be known and I’m not ashamed in the slightest. She hits so many amazing tropes while building such a fabulous world! The snark and love between Nora and Rafe will forever be my favorite! Plus the pets. Cora surpassed my love for Bailey just a smidge but man do I love that adorable “days old carrion with her bony skeleton poking through her skin in places” looking familiar. Trust me. Read the series. But now I’ll go wallow in despair over wanting, no needing, more.

This is the third and final book in the Stones and Curses series, and Lissa wraps up this story just perfectly! First, I loved the growth we see in Nora. She’s gone from being afraid of her magic and what she is, to embracing it all and working hard to become the best leader for her people that she can be. And Rafe was fantastic! He’s grumpy and growly, but so protective of Nora that it was amazing! And that ending!! Lissa gives us a twist and a bit of scheming that I never saw coming! Excellent finish!

Sad it's over...

This is the second series I've completed from Lissa Bolts, and I'm still in love with her writing.

Marked for Ruin is filled with action, surprising twists, and awesome character development. I loved "watching" as Nora's trials and tribulations turned her into a bad*ss! Her development is realistic and satisfying. Her snark had me giggling throughout the story.

I highly recommend the Stones and Curses series. (Also, Ruling Magic- just read all of her work. You won't be disappointed.)

What a journey! After two cliffhangers (yes, two) we finally have the conclusion to Nora’s journey. I loved the power she has and her path of losing and regaining it. I LOVE her familiars and how can I get a kelpie of my own? And Rafe?? The info we learn about his family make me want a book based on his past (are you getting that Lissa??)
And the twist. Oh that twist. Didn’t see it coming! I actually chatted about it with another reader and she said the same thing! You’ve been warned that you’re going to have your socks knocked off. I’m read to go reread all three books and delve back into this world with Nora’s sassy sarcasm and Rafe’s hot broodiness. Or continue on and see if Nora shows up in Jessa’s story?

Nora and Rafe are back in the last story. Druid's are bringing death and destruction, They will have to work with everyone to try and get through this. That won't be easy as most of the Jinn want her gone. Nora is snarky, sarcastic and loads of fun to spend time with. I am sad when the story is over as I would like to carry on a while longer in their world. You will be drawn in and kept under the spell until the end. It is a fast read and you will love this series!

A fabulous conclusion!

Marked for Ruin, the third and final installment in the Stomes and Curses series by Lissa Bolts was a fabulous conclusion to Nora and Rafe’s story and leads us perfectly into the next new adventure in this amazing urbane fantasy world full of Jinn, werewolves, vampires, witches, fae and everything else that may go numb in the night! If you’re looking for a captivating story full of hijinks, betrayals, victories and found family—this is it.

I loved this series!

Nora is one of the best heroines I have come across in a long time. She has the biggest heart. She does her best to save the day regardless of what it costs her or the pain she has to suffer. Rafe is an unusual character, but I fell in love with him as well. Read this series! You will not be disappointed.

Another great installment and finale of the series. This was similar to the first two books until the last 1/3, when all pacing was thrown aside for a raging river of plot progression, it was a trilogy in itself. But the whole thing was a lot of fun and I was happy with the quick ending. I’ll miss that miniature kelpie familiar.

This book is outstanding. All the twists and turns will blow your mind. You won’t want to put this down. I highly recommend it. Lissa Bolts is an incredible author and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

I wasn’t prepared! This book took me through every emotion, through twists and turns and heartache and love and my favorite familiars Bailey and Cora of course! This was an excellent end to the trilogy, and even when I thought I knew what was coming, I was pleasantly surprised to be incorrect.

Also, make sure to get the bonus chapter!! You definitely need to read it!

Can’t wait to read what’s next from Lissa!

Good

The series started out excellent. I liked the characters and the story. That said, however, the story just kept getting more and more complicated and intense to the point that it was too hard to keep up with.

This happy every after hurt every step of the way.

It was a long road. We win in the end. The unexpected really caught me off guard. More twists and turns than a Dark Fae tunnel! I really needed this after the last book.

Great ending

This book picks up where the last left off. Rafe and Nora have a lot to do with bringing Lorath back and fighting the Druids. There are twists and turns and surprises.
