Rate this book

I was born in Teesside but now live in Scarborough on the stunning North Yorkshire Coast. My home inspired the creation of the fictional seaside town of Whitsborough Bay where I set many of my books although the Hedgehog Hollow series takes readers to a gorgeous new countryside setting in the Yorkshire Wolds.

I live with my husband, our teenage daughter and sprocker spaniel, Ella. I'm a self-confessed stationery addict with a ridiculously large collection of notepads who loves chocolate (although it doesn't love me), hedgehogs, 80s music, collectible teddy bears and lighthouses.

Other than a career detour into retail to set up and run my own teddy bear shop (the inspiration for novel Bear With Me), I've always worked in HR, specialising in resourcing, coaching and L&D. Writing always had to take a back seat to the day job until June 2020 when I left the world of HR to become a full-time author. I'm so very grateful to anyone who has bought or borrowed my books in whatever format, helping me fulfil a long-held dream of writing full-time. I still can't believe I get to spend every day chatting to my fictional friends and making stuff up.

If you like reading about complex family relationships, secrets and a fair bit of drama, animal rescue, love, friendship, and forgiveness, this wonderful, feel-good series is for you. I'd recommend reading the books in order (Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow is the third book), but if you want to start from this one, rest assured you won't feel lost - Jessica provided a helpful re-cap of the previous events to bring you up to speed.

Sammie continues to dedicate herself to giving the best care possible to hedgehog rescues people keep bringing in. She is also quite busy helping Josh's Dad and stepmum Beth and their young family who have been and are still going through a lot of health problems. On top of this, Sammie has to look after her cousin Chloe, who unexpectedly left her husband, and Chloe's baby boy. Not many people would find it easy to forgive Chloe for what she did to Sammie in the first book and her stroppy attitude in the second book. Well, this book might help you understand issues Chloe has been dealing with a bit better. The book is told from two alternating POVs - Samantha's and Chloe's- and we get an insight into what why Chloe didn't find early days of motherhood easy and why she is so prone to self-defeating thoughts and angry at the same time. Chloe goes through a lot of development in this book and I would love to see what happens to her and her family in future.

Sammie continues to be as lovely as she was in the previous books, although she is stronger now. It was a real pleasure to see other familiar faces and learn more about what has been going on in their lives. There were other revelations in the book that changed my attitude towards some of the characters and once again highlighted Sammie's forgiving personality and willingness to give everybody a second chance.

I loved every minute spent with Sammie's little charges and the little factfile (True/ false quiz and Dos and Don't of Hedgehog Care) at the end of the book.

This was a lovely escape from reality and I must admit I was hoping for another cliffhanger at the end of the book, because it would mean we are getting the fourth book in this much loved, heartwarming series. The good news: it was there! Can't wait to read the continuation!

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel's Random Resources, NetGalley,Boldwood Books and Jessica Redland for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

Another fabulous book in the series from Jessica Redland! Come on Redland, hurry up and write book four (I don’t think I could possibly wait until next year!). This is a lovely series and I can’t praise it enough. After all, who could resist some cute hoglets and injured hedgehogs that need rescuing?

If you haven’t read the predecessors of this series, you definitely need to start from the beginning to get a true appreciation of the characters and their backgrounds. So much feeds in to this story that it wouldn’t make as much sense as if you have read all the books so far. However, I love that Redland includes a short catch-up at the start of the book so that you can revise what has happened previously. For someone who only read the last book a few months ago, but many hundreds of pages ago, this is a great help! Thank you!

This time, Sam fades a bit into the background and her cousin, Chloe, takes more of a centre stage. Interestingly, this is the same as Sam’s awful mother; I think Redland has explored their seriously estranged relationship quite far in the previous books and I don’t think there is anything new to add to their negative background. Therefore, it is like Chloe steps in as the witch of the story. Very quickly, I seethed over her treatment of Sam and her selfish behaviour. I could not like her at all! In fact, I grew a little angry at my Kindle with the way Sam allowed Chloe to be so rude and aggressive. I actually cheered when Sam stopped making excuses for Chloe’s behaviour and even stood up to her – someone had to because, if it were me, I would have sent Chloe packing a long time ago!

Picking up exactly where the last book finished, we see that Chloe has come to take refuge at Hedgehog Hollow. The farm is quite full now with Sam’s fiancee’s father and his family also staying. But, Sam cannot turn Chloe away – even though she has treated Sam so terribly. Over the story, as the narrative switches between Sam and Chloe, we learn about her past: what has made Chloe the person she has become. It was a complete eye-opener of a narrative and I could never have predicted the revelations that Chloe exposes – totally in keeping with the ‘family secrets’ that are implied in the novel’s title.

Yet, Hedgehog Hollow does not get dominated by Chloe’s past and Sam continues to run a very successful hedgehog sanctuary. I loved the literary-themed animal names but did miss one as epic as in the previous book: topping ‘Snoop Hoggy Hog’ was going to be tricky! I found the treatment of hedgehogs rather interesting and I think it is clear that by this third novel of the series, Redland has done her research. Embedded within this fictional story are some interesting lessons about caring for these animals and this is solidified by Sam’s work with the local schools. Like Sam is educating the primary children, Redland is also raising awareness with her readers about how we can look out for our prickly friends.

This is not a book covered in slushy romance, but more of an exploration of family relationships and caring for those you love the most. Indeed, I found the portrayal of mental health really significant and demonstrates how, what might appear to be a relatively small episode in one’s life, can have a serious impact on our well-being. Several characters in this story suffer from it and I applaud Redland for raising awareness of looking after ourselves, not just others around us. Thankfully, there are services out there that can help us and I wonder if Redland will explore this with those affected characters in the next story.

Finishing on another dramatic cliff-hanger, I was surprised at the unexpected turn of events at the closing of the novel. I am excited at the prospect of a return to Hedgehog Hollow but I really hope that the new book is just as surprising and warming as the others have been. It will be interesting to see how Redland moves the narrative forwards with characters that I feel we have grown to love over the chapters. So, if you haven’t yet read this series, you have until next spring (hopefully!) before the next one is out!

With thanks to Boldwood books, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A lovely story filled with hope, heart, and hedgehogs! This is the third story in this wonderful heartwarming series. While it can be read as a standalone I am certain you will want to read them all! Hedgehog Farm is filled to capacity with both people and hedgehogs. The latest arrival is Chloe, Samantha‘s selfish witch of a cousin. Don’t want to give up anything from the previous books, but what Chloe did to Samantha was terrible. I’m still impressed that Samantha was able to forgive her. Anyways Chloe has recently left her husband for a reason she has not divulged to anyone. Josh‘s dad and stepmom and their two kids are in residence as well. Josh‘s dad is still looking for a bone marrow donor. The hedgehog sanctuary is running at capacity and Samantha is hosting school trips and volunteers. She also is still very affected from things that happened in the past books. Thank goodness she has such a strong character and such a great support in boyfriend/fiancé Josh.

The story bounces back-and-forth between the perspective of Samantha and Chloe. We really get to dig into Chloe‘s past and get to know her better as a character. I’m still not completely sure I like Chloe but I do understand her a lot better. Samantha is just such a warm caring person it’s hard not to be a little protective of her. We also get lots of fun informative times with the hedgehogs who are now being named after famous authors. Would’ve liked a little more time with Fizz, maybe next book? Although I’m thinking next book is going to be about a younger character? This was just such a fun feel good heartwarming story that made me smile and want a pet hedgehog.

*Complexities of Family life*

*4.5 Stars*

This book kicks off with a recap of the previous book “New Arrivals at Hedgehog Hollow” then the story continues

Sam and Josh already have their hands full with Josh’s Dad and partner who happens to be Josh’s ex and their 2 children staying after both of them are battling serious health issues.

Suddenly Chloe, Sam’s cousin turns up with her young baby boy saying she has left her husband James who happens to be Sam’s ex and she refuses to say why or talk to James.

This story had me shouting at Chloe and wondered why Sam put up with her. She is very selfish and self absorbed, Sam the complete opposite. The best thing was seeing Sam finally standing up to her.

We start to see what makes Chloe the way she is as the story flip flops from past to present. One other person and the keeper of Chloe’s secret is Sam’s mother who she has a toxic relationship with and has only ever shown contempt for Sam. But she is the complete opposite to Chloe this always breaks Sam’s heart and she has never even hugged Sam.

When her mum grudgingly agrees to support Chloe by going to the farm for the big reveal, Sam is in shock. What she reveals is heartbreaking.

Then when Chloe’s mum who is Sam’s mother’s identical twin turns up at the farm everything kicks off. Chloe realises the hardest part will be telling her husband.

The revelations and shocks keep coming, when things seem like they are starting to calm down there is a shocking cliffhanger

Totally absorbing, I could hardly put it down.

I was provided with access to a free copy of Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow by Jessica Redland ahead of the blog tour.

5 Word Review: Family, secrets, regrets, love, hedgehogs.

Oh Hedgehog Hollow, how I've grown to love you. The first book in the series was a five star read for me, and it's only got better. So err... Read it. Get it and read it. Get the whole series and prepare to lose your heart to a hedgehog sanctuary, Hedgehog Hollow is a place you will want to visit again and again.

The first book focuses on Samantha, the second book adds Josh, and in the third book we have Chloe joining the narrating characters. I thought that the addition of a narrator with each book was very clever and it rounded out the characters so well. Each has their own distinct voice and it adds another slant to every event. The emotions are heightened, the reader knows secrets before the characters, and it leads to the most delicious building on tension and anticipation.

Samantha has had it rough - so much has happened to her in such a short time, and she is really feeling it. I thought the exploration of the mental impact of her trauma was excellently done and it was very sympathetic in how it was dealt with.

I liked seeing Josh grow and mature. His family issues he has to deal with are pretty extreme, there is so much going on, and he has such a right to be angry. It was amazing to see him be willing to listen and set that anger aside.

Chloe was a big surprise. I wasn't expecting any of the story to be told from her perspective, but so much makes sense now about her. I understand her motivations. I couldn't put this book down as I wanted to know exactly what secrets Chloe had lurking in her past. And I wasn't prepared. Chloe changes so much between the first and last pages of the book and I loved to see it.

This book did at times have a bit of a domestic-thriller feel, especially for Chloe's narration as more of her story was revealed. My heart broke for her, and although I had resented her somewhat in previous books I really empathised with what she's been through. She has her reasons for being the way she is.

The settings of Hedgehog Hollow, the Yorkshire Wolds, and the seaside village of Whitsborough Bay and not only stunning and vividly detailed, but they are almost characters in themselves. The places have personality, they come alive, and I feel like I've been on a bit of an adventure. I feel like I've been there. But oh, what I'd give to sit on the bench and stare out at the meadow.

Hedgehog Hollow really has it all - drama, secrets, messy families and hidden pasts. It breaks your heart and then puts it together piece by piece, sticking everything together with hope and kindness. I have cried and laughed and cried again.

The ending was... Well, not quite what I wanted but in a really good way. But can book four hurry up please?

This book can be read as a standalone - there is an excellent recap at the beginning that gives you the gist of what's happened and the story stands well on its own. But by doing that you will miss out on the most incredible story arc: Hedgehog Hollow is a very special series, and one I hope I can read more of in future. It's one I'll definitely revisit too as the characters have worked their way into my heart.

Where on earth do I start? I am reeling from that ending but already excited and impatient to read book 4 even if i do have to wait for Jessica Redland to write it first. However even before that I was reeling from various revelations.

I mean Family Secrets is such an apt title for this book, as we finally get to understand so much more about Chloe, and just what makes her tick.

For this book is written in two perspectives, alternating between Samantha and Chloe. And with Chloe we see her latest impulsive decision which seems completely irrational very early into the book, and she and her baby Sam, arrive at Hedgehog Hollow desperate to stay a while after she runs out on James without warning and giving absolutely no one any logical reason why.

The sheer amount of character development over the case of the book and series so far, for Chloe is impressive and unlike the first two books in the series where I really disliked her, I went through all manner of emotions and feelings towards her and her true backstory. It's eye opening and no matter what I guessed I wasn't quite close to the truth!

Then there is Samantha and wow she has a full house at Hedgehog Hollow and I'm not talking about the hogs, although there are many cute hoglets needing feeding at all hours, and the rescue centre is finally starting to come into its own, and she is even taking on work experience placements and doing school visits.

But the stresses from the previous troubles in previous book are still present and clearly affecting her. I'm trying my hardest not to spoil either this book or book two if you haven't already read it.

For this is one seriously impressive and addictive series. I do though feel that Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow although perhaps you will enjoy it as a standalone, that its best to have read at least one if not both the first two books in the series in order to have a full emotional connection to the characters and thus really understand the complicated family dynamics that are in play.

There are a good amount of reminders though to help you along the way though which will help new readers to the series too.

I tend to open and read my books at random on my kindle, and had my eyes closed when my fingers opened this one for me, without knowing what I was reading, even before I got to the end of the first page I recognised it to be a Hedgehog Hollow book and it felt like coming home and I instantly felt very calm and happy. Believe it or not it wasn't a hedgehog that clued me in either but a bench!

With its mix of more serious subjects dealt with in Jessica Redland's trademark sensitive and compassionate way, this is one impressive heart-warming and incredibly hard to put down story that has completely absorbed me over the past 24 hours.

Or as I said at the start of this review, Jessica Redland please write faster I don't want to wait for more from Hedgehog Hollow! I need my next fix sooner than later, for with a series this addictive, it really is a fix!

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Another thrilling and exciting read from this fabulous series. So much going on and intrigue had be turning the pages non stop!
The family secrets were very unexpected and I loved how the reader was drawn into the story by flash backs .
It was interesting to hear the story from Chloe, it gave an insight to her previous behaviour and helped me understand why she acts the way she does.
Dramatic, this book really caught my attention and I really can’t wait for the book in the series now!

NOPE. I cannot. I hate Chloe’s spoiled, whiny guts, and I refuse to read her inner dialogue and watch Sammie be more of a doormat. Meh.

Really enjoyed this book. I seem to whizz through them! Another cliffhanger in the epilogue! I could honestly binge read them all! I like the dual character chapters too.

This book was full of family drama and focussed on Chloe’s story. I’ve never been a fan of her spiky character in previous books but when you read this book, you can really understand why she is the way she is. A secret she has kept for 12 years eventually comes out and the repercussions are far reaching.

A really good story with plenty of family drama.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.

I will admit that this was a page-turner. But I also found myself incredibly annoyed and frustrated all the way through this. It was difficult to have Chloe as a narrator because of how remarkably unlikeable and unsympathetic she was as a character especially contrasted with perfect Pollyannaic Sam. I think the theme of this series is forgiveness and to create the characters with the ugliest dramas who react in the messiest, most toxic ways and then gaslight the perfect characters into the sort of forgiveness that doesn’t take accountability for its actions. In the previous book, it was Josh’s father and Beth. In this one, it’s definitely Chloe with Sam. I didn’t mind the complexity of the characters this book was proposing, I had a problem with how this book tried to excuse toxicity when it was called out and out the onus on the victims (of said toxicity) to deal with it. I didn’t find the tragic events experienced by some characters an excuse for borderline sociopathic behaviour. And it wasn’t a good look. I also wasn’t a fan of the uneven back and forth pacing of this book. The reason for Chloe’s abandoning her husband was far-fetched and incredibly reach-y. I more or less finished this because I had it. By 5% in, I was already annoyed and that carried throughout. It has interesting content on forgiveness definitely in the messianic scale based on the degree of harm, but to me, the apologies weren’t sincere and I didn’t believe them. So I’m meh about this.

I absolutely love this series and was so excited to be able to visit Hedgehog Hollow again. This story picks up shortly after the end of the last one, so with no gap in the time line within a few pages it felt like I had continued straight on from the last book.

As Sam works to look after Josh's family and devote her time to the growing number of Hedgehogs she is rescuing. She doesn't anticipate Chloe serving notice on her marriage and just appearing on her doorstep, given the fraught relationship they have recently had. With a distraught Chloe and an unsettled baby Samuel to add to her growing list of commitments, we finally see Sam take a stand and start to stand up to those who are prepared to take advantage of her kind and forgiving nature.

I loved learning more about the hedgehogs, especially with it being the time of year that you are more likely to see hoglets in your garden. During this story we learn more about the past and what has caused Chloe and Sam's mum to be so close and we look forward to the future as they search for a match for Josh's Dad to have further treatment for his cancer.

Another wonderful visit to Hedgehog Hollow, where I once again reached the end before I was ready and am already desperate to read the next one.

I read this book on a wet and windy Bank Holiday Monday, in a single wonderful sitting. This is the third in the series, and I always feel really at home at Hedgehog Hollow – a bit like being enveloped in a warm hug, with a smile on my face before I’ve even read a word. Although it’s obviously better to read a series in order (and why wouldn’t you want to read them all – they’re gorgeous!), there’s a really useful catch-up on the story so far at the start of this book, and a list of characters for you to refer back to (should you need to), and I thought that was an excellent idea – and it really does make this latest book even more readable as a standalone.

But I’ve been to Hedgehog Hollow before, and I was really looking forward to seeing how life was treating Sam and Josh, what was happening with their small patients and with all that extended family and their various relationships. If you’ve read the earlier books, you’ll already know her cousin Chloe – they were once close friends, but a particular act of treachery has made their relationship distinctly strained ever since. But when she arrives at Hedgehog Hollow, with her baby son, in a state of disarray, refusing to tell anyone why she’s run away from her marriage, warm-hearted Sam is happy to provide her with sanctuary.

The voice of the story alternates between Sam and Chloe – the first is a character you can’t help but take to your heart, but liking and understanding Chloe is considerably more difficult. For the first quarter of the book, I disliked her intensely – even her inner thoughts have a selfishness and petulance about them, she’s totally unaware and unconcerned about the impact of her behaviour, and the way she treats Sam is quite appalling. It’s brave writing, but it’s exceptionally well done – as Chloe’s story unfolds, you slowly come to understand the reasons why she behaves the way she does. I’m not going to spoil anything by telling more, but it’s quite a story, with some quite serious issues sensitively handled – and as the full story emerges, Chloe undergoes something of a transformation and becomes once more the caring friend Sam remembers from their younger years. I can’t say I ever grew to particularly like her – but I certainly sympathised, and came to understand her rather better.

And as Chloe’s story unfolds, Sam continues to develop the hedgehog sanctuary, with increasing numbers of new admissions, along with hosting visits from groups of primary school children, supported by the wonderful Josh and her friends and family. And as they support her, Sam opens her home and heart to them too – I particularly liked the way her relationship developed with Beth, Josh’s former girlfriend, now the partner of Josh’s dad Paul who’s going through a few challenges of his own. And while we’re talking about relationships, there’s some really interesting developments in Sam’s difficult one with her mother – I really liked the way that was handled, very real and particularly touching. But although the external threat to the sanctuary has been removed, it continues to have an impact on Sam’s health and peace of mind – another issue beautifully handled, its slightly darker edge casting a few shadows.

The book’s title and cover might make you think this would be a light and heartwarming story, something nice and easy to spend an afternoon with – and in so many ways, it certainly is. But the author never shies away from the bigger issues, and there’s a meatiness to the story at times that I particularly welcomed. I think I’ve probably mentioned before – in earlier reviews – how well she draws and develops her characters, making them real individuals that you engage with and believe in, and in this book does that more strongly than ever. And I think I must say a word about the book’s ending – the central story is complete and tied up, but there’s a really tantalising hook into the next book in the series, and more than a hint of trouble to come – I really liked that, although I really didn’t need a hook as I’m looking forward to it already.

Her best yet? Despite Chloe, yes, I think it really might be. I’ve been reading the author’s books for a few years now, and it’s been a delight to see her style and storytelling increasing in confidence and maturity, bringing her the success and attention she’s always very much deserved.

I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Each time I read a Hedgehog Hollow book, I am blown away by how powerful the stories are. This is the third in the series and each one is as good as, and slightly better than the last.
Picking up from where the last one left off, Samantha is thrown into turmoil as her cousin, Chloe arrives in tears and clouded in mystery. Already offering a home to her boyfriend’s father and his small family, Samantha’s forced to offer a home to Chloe and her baby.
There’s never a dull moment and, as usual, the hedgehogs take priority as Samantha tries to navigate her way through the complicated mess that Chloe has brought to her doorstep.
Family Secrets is an appropriate title as it absolutely sums up the problems that they cause, and Samantha has to unravel. She has, of course, got the full support of her family and there’s even a chance that hostilities may cease with her estranged mother.
Of course, Chloe’s big secret is life-altering and, as we discover the full details, it’s a truly shocking story. No wonder she ran from James, leaving him stunned and heartbroken. Of course, I don’t include spoilers, so you’ll need to read this book to learn more.
Jessica Redland is becoming a firm favourite author. I love her style of writing and her pull no punches approach to difficult subjects.
I was delighted to discover that this instalment ended on a cliff-hanger, so we’ll be returning to Hedgehog Hollow to catch up on the adventures on the farm.

I really liked the first book in the series. Sammie went through some serious stuff and did her best to set boundaries with some awful people and build her own life.
Then in book 2, there's a tragic backstory introduced about someone who was awful in book 1. Then a sad story for another character that treats the hero horribly.
So book 3? Tragic backstory for Chloe, who is also awful. I'm over it. I hope Sammie gets her HEA with Josh, enjoys her found family, and never has to deal with her mom or Chloe again. Being everyone's doormat is not a journey in forgiveness.

This was a tough read (emotionally), but we finally find out more about Chloe’s past and now she’s ended up so bitter. It turns out to be quite a sad story. I’m glad to find Chloe and Sam close again, even if Sam is still a bit of a doormat overall. She means well, I just wish she didn’t let everyone walk all over her.

Looking forward to the next book.

I've loved the books in the Hedgehog Hollow series so far, so when this was released at midnight I dropped my other book to read this! The book is written in two person form...from both Chloe (the cousin) & Samantha. It's very well written & has such a powerful storyline, which was a huge shocker! Please tell me there is another book to come Jess? 🙏

If you're a lover of Hedgehogs, family drama, relationships & romance this is the book for you! ♥️🦔

Hedgehog Hollow rescue centre is up & running which was Samantha's dream. But somewhere along the way her being too kind has resulted in her 7 bedroomed home being packed to the rafters with members of both her & Josh's families...let the drama commence!

It turns out I read these in the wrong order because I was sure I'd read this one before reading the wedding.

I really enjoyed this addition to the series and I was so pleasantly surprised to know I'd not finished the series.

As with all the others I absolutely loved this story. And although part of this book is from Chloe's point of view I still can't warm to her, the way she treats others especially Sam is horrible.

The explain did give a sort of reason why someone would behave like that and I haven't been through what she has but still you still respect others and not be the way she is. I'm not a fan.

I did however love the chats Sam had with her mum and the other exciting bit of news that seems overshadowed when Chloe turns up.

Another brilliant book.

No, sorry no…
At first, same as the other books: Chloe being a nightmare, and Sam still with the events from last books.
Then Chloe’s secret. Horrible. As a mother myself I just crumpled into tears. So much for a rom com…
And then Chloe with her personality transplant (which is great but hard to believe), and we go back to the events with the grimes… so annoying…
I would have liked some novelty instead or going through what already been said

Lutade åt en DNF i början av boken. Kände att jag störde mig mycket på Chloe. Om du känner samma sak så kämpa dig igenom det, för det är värt det!

A slow start, found the first chunk of the book difficult to read as Chloe was so incredibly unbearable and unlikeable as a character! But once it goes more into her character development and her past and it gives you a reason as to why she is the way she is, you start to like her more and more. Very calming book, so cute and homely vibes. And a v unexpected plot twist at the end too!

secrets…animal rescue…romance… the power of forgiveness…

Thanks #NetGalley #@BoldwoodBooks for a complimentary eARC of #FamilySecretsAtHedgehogHollow upon my request. All opinions are my own.

Number 3 in the series finds Samantha running her hedgehog rescue center and enjoying a committed relationship with handsome, wonderful, and supportive Josh. Their sprawling, charming farmhouse is full of love and laughter as Josh’s dad’s family now lives with them (for health reasons). Suddenly, their lives are complicated when Sam’s self-centered and ill-behaved cousin, Chloe, arrives at the farm with her baby and begs Sam to let her stay. Chloe is emotional and won’t speak to her husband or explain to him or anyone else what’s happening. Life-changing secrets from the past are about to be revealed.

A Warm-hearted Series: Often in a series, the stories can be read as stand-alones. Although this is certainly true with Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow, I highly recommend you read the Hedgehog books in order to gain an appreciation for the characters and family dynamics. The three tenderhearted books in the hedgehog series include romance, animal rescue, family drama, and thoughtful themes. I appreciate the closed-door romance and absence of profanity.

With the exception of Chloe, most characters in the series are likable. When I first started reading Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow, I was apprehensive to find out that half of this story is Chloe’s. The writing alternates between Sam’s and Chloe’s perspectives and includes Chloe’s backstory. It does help us gain a better understanding of Chloe, and at the story’s end, I can say I liked her a little bit better (I still don’t think it excuses her bad behaviors). Although I appreciate hearing Chloe’s backstory, I found myself worrying about Sam’s health and well-being as she expertly provides rescue services, patiently supports many family members and attends to their needs, and offers wise counsel and a listening ear. Josh is a perfect book boyfriend!

Readers who are looking for engaging and heartfelt women’s fiction with sides of romance, family drama, and animal rescue will enjoy this series. Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow ends with a twist that is sure to be picked up in book four!

4.5 Stars: This is the third Hedgehog Hollow book and I continue to enjoy this series. The title for this book is perfect. Chloe, Samantha's cousin who we meet in the previous books, shows up at Hedgehog Hollow with her infant Samuel, Sam, in tow. She has left James, but no one knows why. She isn't talking and she is her miserable self that we have gotten to know in previous stories. Not only is Samantha dealing with this new arrival, but James father, Beth and their two children are also living in the farmhouse. It is a bit crowded and while Samantha waits Chloe out, she continues to deal with her own problems. She is having nightmares and fainting spells that are cause of concern. To lighten the loud, she gets students from the local college to do work placements for her, one in animal care and another accountant. What secrets is Chloe hiding to cause her breakdown?

This story is told from two POVs, alternating between Samantha and Chloe. We see what is happening in the present from both women. Chloe's responses are often reactionary and she is regretful, but she still won't share what is happening. As the book progresses, Chloe's story begins to share things that happened in her past that has shaped her personality. As we learn Chloe's secrets, I finally began to thaw towards her. Not only does she finally reveal things from her past, but she also seems to learn from them. All of this going on in Samantha's life increases her stress and she also has some physical reactions to it. I do not want to spoil this book for anyone so will stop here. I will say that this book is full of secrets, family relationships, love, caring, hedgehogs, and more. This is a great series that is best read in order. There is a lot of character and story development that you don't want to miss. I have to say that the ending left me shocked and I am now waiting for the next Hedgehog Hollow book that won't be out until 2022. If you enjoy hedgehogs, stories about family, community and animal rescue you need to pick this one up. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

Right from the start…
...I knew this was going to be a TOUGH one.
Not the reaction you were expecting, right?
Well, for those who know the characters, you’ll probably have guessed why right from the start.

Sam is celebrating her recent engagement, or well at least she should be, but those she wants to share the news with seem to be keeping her at more than arm’s length, and a text message seemed so impersonal, until it wasn’t, and the outcome seemed catastrophic. Okay, so Chloe’s arrival wasn’t purely prompted by the news being delivered so, but it definitely seems to ignite a chain of events that spiral into a long boxed up memory being dredged up from the depths, a potential separation that may be longer than expected, and a surprising twist of events that you won’t quite see coming.

I loved catching up with Sam and friends, as well as the familiarity of the setting. It makes it feel like old friends you're catching up with every time you pick up the next installment. Honestly though, I’m in the same boat with Chloe as I have been throughout the series...I just don’t like the woman. I understand her more now, and I’m glad to see some change, but all the backstabbing, big drama, and hate that’s been spewed have left their mark and I’m afraid it’s fairly indelible for me. That being said, I still enjoyed this story and her character’s growth, and being the soft hearted individual that I am, still feel bad for the past that has haunted her, and the future that she’s uncovered. Here’s hoping all turns to right. I was expecting a GIANT TWIST of events by story’s end, but not the one we received! I really saw that whole connection thing going another way, not that I’m disappointed in the least, but still...the nerve! Sorry, I’ve said too much, but you’ll have to read it to see...just cross your fingers that our gal Sam can pull through this one!
