Linux for the rest of us: A starter guide for people who just want to be productive with Linux

Rate this book
When we ask people to name an operating system for desktop or laptop computers, probably most of them will immediately say Microsoft Windows. Windows is, seen from a pure numbers perspective, still, the king on desktops, laptops, and workstations, with a user share of more than 80% worldwide. To a lesser extent, the same can be said for Apple with its macOS operating system, which has a user base of around 18% worldwide. So where is that other 2%? Well, there is another kid in town, the free and open-source operating system called Linux. Linux exists already for more than 25 years, but in the past decades, Linux really proved to be grown up into the most mature, powerful, robust, and reliable operating system you can find.

Maybe you have already heard or read some things about Linux and would like to learn or do more with this operating system. Or you are just a curious type of person and you are eager to broaden your horizon with new things? Or your current Windows computer has become slow, but you do not want to buy a new computer again and you’ve heard that with Linux, buying a new computer is probably not necessary at all? Or you are very concerned with the environment and therefore find it very difficult to throw a technically still working computer on the electronic waste pile, just because it is a bit outdated? You have browsed many websites on the topic of Linux and open source, but a lot of them seem to be written by and mainly focused on very technical people. And now you still have some doubts if the Linux world is an option for you, as you are just a regular user of productivity software who wants to be able to mail, write a letter, keep track of your administration in a spreadsheet and browse the web. Or do you want to know if it is possible to do creative work with Linux, like video and photo editing? If these doubts and questions reflect your current state of mind and you are less interested in all the technical nitty gritty of your operating system, then this book is for you, as the content mainly focuses on regular users who just want to be productive with their software and equipment.

Through a combination of basic background information and several short and simple-to-understand Linux beginner tutorials, this book wants to be a simple starter guide for those who have never done anything with Linux before and do not know exactly where to start and where to find the necessary information. In an accessible way, this book guides you through the principles of Linux, makes you understand what a Linux distribution is, helps in finding and downloading a perfect Linux distribution for your needs, helps in creating a live USB medium that enables you to try Linux before actually wiping your hard drive, helps in finding good software and goes all the way up to the installation of software, executing updates and most importantly, actually productively using your new system.
