The revised and updated edition of this bestselling text provides an accessible introduction to the theory and practice of network analysis in the social sciences. It gives a clear and authoritative guide to the general framework of network analysis, explaining the basic concepts, technical measures and reviewing the available computer programs. The book outlines both the theoretical basis of network analysis and the key techniques for using it as a research tool. Building upon definitions of points, lines and paths, John Scott demonstrates their use in clarifying such measures as density, fragmentation and centralization. He identifies the various cliques, components and circles into which networks are formed, and outlines
I actually read the 4th edition of this book which came out more recently in 2017. I'm learning a lot in this area and so this was a nice starter book to the field of social network analysis and some of the fundamental concepts. I did find it lacking real examples of applications. It does have more of the social science perspective which is to be expected but the field of network analysis is exploding in so many areas so readers coming from another perspective (eg physical sciences, business, analytics) may be a little disappointed. I thought the last chapter on visualization was so sparse compared to the vast advances that have happened in network visualization as a result of computing power and technology.
This is the nearly perfect introduction to understanding Social Network Analysis for the total novice. Almost no math. Easy to read and relatively short. Focuses on the basic concepts. Of course, after you read it you'll go on to other works, but this is the place to start if you aren't already familiar with SNA.
Great handbook on social network analysis ~ practical and helpful applications of SNT. Not recommended for the average layperson as it requires some understanding of the theory behind SNA to apply the formulas/calculations presented in this handbook.
