Weapons of Opportunity

Rate this book
Fresh off his success in the New York Times bestselling Countdown to Midnight, Nick Flynn finds himself once again facing a vicious enemy—one determined to destroy the United States. When Nick Flynn left the US Air Force to join the Quartet Directorate, he did so with the full knowledge that no one could ever know. This covert private force—called Four by its members—promised him the chance to lead his own missions and make his own decisions, though the risks are high. When a former senior CIA executive goes dark, Flynn and his team—including the daring Laura Van Horn—are ready to step in. What begins as a quiet check on his home turns into a firefight against a familiar enemy who is more dangerous than ever. Russian oligarch Pavel Voronin and his shadowy Raven Syndicate are back in action, supported by Russia’s aging and autocratic president. Voronin intends to unleash a new force of advanced stealth aircraft against the US in order to make Moscow supreme and cement his own rise to power. With millions of lives at stake, Flynn and his team must track Voronin’s operatives and mount a risky counterattack deep into hostile territory. If they fail, the consequences will be horrific. But failure isn’t an option—not for Nick Flynn.

Lord what a wild ride. It is up to Flynn and his teammates at Quartet Directorate, a secret intelligence agency outside the control of the government, to save the U.S. from annihilation at the hands of Russia. The distrust of the intelligence community and the political elite runs throughout and Brown doesn't hold back. It's obvious Brown is well-versed in the military and intelligence matters and the authenticity drips off the pages. Weapons of Opportunity is an intense, alarming technothriller that doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. What doesn't seem possible is how awful the dialogue is. People would look at you weird if you actually talked like the dialogue in the book. They would also never talk to you again. Basically the worst, most uncomfortable small talk imaginable. Despite some of the unnecessary conversations, Weapons of Opportunity is a world-class thriller that shouldn't be missed.

Thanks to Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Weapons of Opportunity.

I have been following the work of Dale Brown since his publication, decades ago, of "The Flight of the Old Dog."
In his latest series, the Nick Flynn series, Brown is true to his canon. The second book in the series, "Weapons of Opportunity," will soon be available, and I am very grateful to the publisher, Blackstone, for making an ARC available to me for my perusal. Brown can be relied upon for his technological prowess, his mastery of military tropes and conventions, as well as solid characterizations and riveting action sequences. I own most of his books, and have seldom been disappointed. One of the features that has grown as Brown's canon has developed is a thorough going and well founded distrust of the Intelligence Community in the United States and its increasing ineffectiveness and politicization (what is often referred to in a modern context as the "Deep State'). Notwithstanding his reservations about our political leadership and the increasingly inept behavior of those associated with what Eisenhower called the Military Industrial Complex, Brown has never lost his touch for portraying the sharp contrast between failures of public leadership and the patriotism of the average American soldier, sailor and airman (and women). This is what keeps me coming back to him. His deft understanding of military technology and the concerns of the men and women who must use it to protect our nation, from foreign enemies as well as domestic policy wonks sometimes divorced from reality or blinded by false ideological concerns.

Another fun entry in the Nick Flynn and The Four series…Though Tom Clancy has done it better, Dale Brown’s entry in the sub rosa, nongovernmental operator genre is a more than adequate summer beach read…Flynn and the Quartet Directorate are again confronted by the Russian oligarch, Voronin and his Raven Syndicate…This time, facing a nefarious plan to completely destroy the United States and its position as a world power from within the country…Fun read!!!

If you enjoy reading military-ops thrillers Weapons of Opportunity is a must-read. The story is fast-paced, full of details of incredible weapons, and details on how to conduct an undercover operation. At the same time, although the main characters resemble superheroes they show their human side, their fears and hopes. A great story and plot that hopefully will remain only as a story and never become a reality,
I thank Mr. Brown, his publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC.

In this 3rd novel of the Nick Flynn series, Nick Flynn and his team, are given a task that seems virtually impossible unless one is determined to beat all the odds despite the potential losses. Nick is part of a private enterprise called Operations Four, which does the type of operations that would never pass as valuable for political decisions but necessary for the common good. The mission of this book is to stop whatever project Russian oligarch Pavel Voronin and his syndicate the Raven are doing under the support of the current Russian leader. The Russian leader lets Voronin have a free hand in developing his projects because he develops useful upgraded technology that helps Russia. Voronin's latest project is advanced stealth aircraft, drones flown by pilots from a distance away from the action. His plan is to attack critical areas in the USA with nuclear bombs flown by these planes. Nick's team's job is to take the clues they find and figure out what is going on and stop the process. The first thing, they notice is a connection via plane routes between Voronin's private plane and a company centered in Dubai, which had a corporate head, who was a subordinate of Voronin. When they got photo proof of Voronin being actually present in Durango, Mexico, meeting with the head of The Brotherhood of the Blood, a known drug cartel gang in control of that area of Mexico. They attempt to catch Voronin in Dubai with a Black ops attack in disguise but only manage to kill the representative and the small group of guards stationed there. This calls for more dangerous approaches to find out what exactly is the playing in motion by Voronin. Nick goes on a special surveillance trip to Mexico after they figured out which warehouse of the cartel, the Russians were borrowing for their use. He barely gets out of there safely with photos that show the planes being built at the site. What they have to figure out next is where the planes are headed and where are the drone pilots. They don't need to go back to Mexico because Voronin has an ending payment planned for the Brotherhood of the Blood for their "hospitality".Using satellite photos and the travel routes, they figure the drone pilots are stationed in Cuba, so they plan an extremely dangerous mission with2 types of invasion missions with a high casualty ratio. They succeed in eliminating the satellite link ( both direct and backup) but they still had to deal with the drone planes at their location and hopefully stop them from flying off. Lucky for them, the Russian president had installed a backup detonation to the site which destroyed all the planes despite contamination of the area which was already a sparsely populated location. Voronin is demoted from power but is allowed to continue his technological development, with a monitor (an assigned special assassin) to watch over him.

Dale Brown's "Weapons of Opportunity", takes readers on a thrilling and action-packed journey through the world of military aviation. Known for his expertise in describing aerial warfare, Brown delivers yet another captivating installment in this third of the series featuring, Nick Flynn.

Set on the backdrop where cutting-edge technology meets geopolitical tensions, "Weapons of Opportunity" explores the brink of a global conflict between superpowers. As countries vie for dominance, Nick Flynn finds himself operating not only on advanced arsenal of warplanes but also a variety of unconventional and experimental aircraft known as "weapons of opportunity."

After leaving the US air force and joining the Quartet Directorate, Nick has been persuading his superiors to let him lead a mission, knowing the high stakes involved in such covert assignments. Russian Oligarch, Pavel Voronin, and a close aide of the autocratic Russian President, is planning a systematic nuclear attack on several US cities with un-manned advanced stealth drones, operated by pilots sitting far-away in secured control-rooms. Nick and his team’s job is to track Pavel’s movements, figure out what’s going on thwart his plans.

The first connection of Pavel Voronin and his Raven Syndicate is tracked to a company in Dubai, that provided a cover for his nefarious operations. The second connection is when they get a photo of Pavel in Durango, Mexico meeting with The Brotherhood, a known fearsome drug cartel. Their plan is to bring the parts of the aircraft in knocked-down condition and assemble them in one of the warehouses belonging to the cartel. With a black op styled operation, Nick and team decimates the cartel, but not before the drones have crossed over to the US. With time ticking by, Nick must either find out the exact location of the planes or track the location of the remote pilots. Using satellite imagery, they figure out the most likely location of such a center could be Cuba. They must execute an extremely dangerous assault plan, with a high-risk ratio to not only blow up the remote operation center but also all their back-up satellite links. Time is not on Nick’s side, and they are merely moving on circumstantial and logical analysis to the location in Cuba, still not know the devastating effect that these drones can cause, once they have reached their target cities. Will Nick and his team, eliminate the remote operating center in Cuba and track down the drone’s exact location before the catastrophe?

One of the strengths of this book lies in Brown's ability to vividly describe intense aerial combat. The detailed technical expertise woven into the narrative creates a realistic and thrilling experience for readers. From dogfights to precision strikes, the author's meticulous attention to detail makes each action sequence come to life, causing readers to feel as though they are walking alongside Nick and his team. Supporting characters, such as the skilled and resilient Laura Van Horn, provides a refreshing perspective and add depth to the story.

Additionally, while the technological descriptions are a highlight, they may be overwhelming for readers less familiar with military aviation jargon. This may alienate some readers and limit the book's broader appeal. With its detailed aerial combat descriptions, complex characters, and realistic portrayal of future conflicts, this novel stands as a testament to the author's expertise in the genre. While it may not appeal to everyone, for readers seeking an adrenaline-fueled adventure through the skies, "Weapons of Opportunity" hits its target with precision.

Pavel Voronin and the Raven Syndicate are once again trying to destroy America...and this time they may just succeed unless Nick Flynn and the Quartet Directorate can figure out the plan and stop it.

This was an exciting book filled with danger and urgency. It was fascinating seeing the lengths Nick's team would go to in order to succeed in their mission. It makes me wonder if there are real teams with missions out there protecting our country in ways we never hear about. The final battle was pretty epic. It would make for a very tense action film.

Thank you to Blackstone Publishing for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Quite a ride! The Russians, following another wild plan, this time involving stealth drones are trying again to take out the US.
With an inept president, and a CIA head whose only qualifications are political connections and an eye to protect his own skin, it falls to Flynn and the Quartet Directive to stop them.
A nonstop run to obtain information and then put it into action makes it hard to put this book down

Nick Flynn, a member of a very elite and covert US task force is back in action when his Russian nemesis, oligarch Pavel Voronin, comes up with another secret mission to bring the US to its knees.
Nick and his team are forced to bring on extra help from other covert groups to try to foil the Russians plan without knowing exactly what it is.
Non stop intrigue, great action and characters and locations that jump off the pages at you with Brown's usual precision and thoroughness in descriptive passages.
Exciting and good read - just a little slow in some sections for me.

Enjoyable story, albeit standard systemic Russian conspiracy. The plot itself is a big reach, but the book is written to keep the reader entertained. Nick, Laura, and their team are solid characters. The oligarch Pavel Voronin makes a great sinister antagonist. This series definitely shows the author's disdain for the CIA as well as the government in general.

Overall, if you liked book 1 and 2 in this series, you will like book 3.

I know i am being nitpicky but the narrator mispronounced several normal words, like “ration” was pronounced “rAtions”. And being that I’ve listened to 3 of these books in a row. This was a little predictable. Not reading the next one for awhile.
