THREE CRIMES by Rosanna McLaughlin A novel in three parts, THREE CRIMES submerges readers in a grotesque and comical world on the edge of collapse--much like our own. Britain is immersed in a toxic swamp, and sinkholes are opening up in the ground with alarming frequency. Amid the mayhem, three crimes take Stonehenge has been stolen, a porn-addicted ghost writer faces the phantoms of her past, and a murder takes place among ex-pats in a Goan village. Fiction.
quite chuffed! viciously precise assault on the catastrophically self-absorbed denizens of a near-future UK & their appetites. the "flood zones" wherein the lower classes reside in bldgs w/ permaflooded lower floors, grimly making the most of it, were shall we say a lil too plausible! the weaknesses that stood out here -- (1) the 2nd story about the ghostwriter dovetailing away from the "crimes" theme and (2) the 3rd story set in goa feeling less fresh than the others given how forcefully it was giving white lotus -- didn't rly deflate the yorkshire pud any. another pls rosanna, ta
Man, where do I begin with this one? This thing is grim, gross, grotty and goddamn great. ‘Sinkhole: Three Crimes’ takes a truly bizarre journey into a world teetering on the brink of chaos. With Britain sinking into a toxic swamp, the narrative unfolds through three gripping crimes: Stonehenge has been pinched, a porn-addicted ghost writer confronts her past, and to top it all off there’s been a murder in a Goan village. Roseanna McLaughlin's dark humor and vivid storytelling immerse readers in this grotesque and comical realm, resulting in an unforgettable exploration of the absurdities of our time.
Yoga raw food business Goa owners , world of good old Thatcher-era England nostalgics, writers spending their time closed at home, writing whatever pays for their Amazon Prime deliveries in flooded areas. All those get an ironic and fun punch in the face in these three stories.
Bought this on a whim in a bookshop before being mildly pissed off at how much it ended up costing (£14 for a pocket sized book lol) BUT I really enjoyed it. Such a funny and interesting read, and the characters and their plots are all great. I’m surprised it doesn’t have more reviews, but not surprised that the their one is 5*s too. Next time I might go to a different bookshop though..
