Corrupting Violet

Rate this book
Violet
I only have one person in mind, Wade Lynwood, the mayor of Seattle. He’s looking for a trophy wife to carry on his arm, and I’m up for the task. If I can use my knowledge about rich men, then maybe I can lure him into my trap. The only problem is he comes with extra baggage. A son. I don’t want to be a mother, and Miles isn’t looking for one. Far from it. This should be a piece of cake, right? Wrong.
There’s something way more sinister going on in this family than I can anticipate, and my silence is imperative.

Miles
I have a skill for getting rid of stepmoms, but now that I’m getting older, my future hangs in the balance. This one might be a bit more difficult than the last and better taken down while on my knees.
The only thing better than beating the enemy is sleeping with them.

The MMC licks his stuff out of her and calls that cleaning up! Like ew 10/10 would not recommend unless you’re into a lot of cüm play. Just saying..

Listen, if your planning to go into this book thinking you have a “idea” what the plot is… stop 😂
I legit paused around 30% and had to do some critical thinking to see if I could guess the plot twist that was starting to show face. The little comments here and there in the first few chapter had me thinking something else was about to transpire 🤔 and boy was I right 😬 it is definitely a ride, so buckle up lol

only thing stopping me from a 5 star was how short it was. The plot line itself was good, the twist and turns good, the filthy mouth on miles 👍 buuutttt I reallly wanted more Character development between miles and violet before he flipped scrip and decided he fully wanted her. A little more dialog between all of them would of helped with character development too. The first half of the book could have used a little more description, so we had a better connection with the fmc as well, like who she is, and her deeper monologue.
All in all it was a entertaining read for sure.

⚠️But pleaseeee make sure you check allllll of the tws before reading, she does have them posted and take all of the warnings very seriously. ⚠️

if you are the author or someone who really enjoyed this, I'd really advise skipping this review

this review will contain spoilers so read at your own risk

TLDR: shitty FMC, nonsensical plot, underwhelming romance, and the big-bads were basically caricatures taken out of a cliché second-rate comic book. should've DNF'd before I even started.

Plot 1/5⭐️
Spice 2/5🌶️
Romance 0/5💘
Tension 0/5🥵
Vibes 0/5👏🏻
Dual 1st person POV

Guys, this was bad. Like actually so bad. I hate-finished this book because I had to know if it got any better. Spoiler alert: it didn't. Our FMC, Violet, is a 35y/o POS who turned her sister away when she needed her the most to protect her "image" of having the perfect family/life, proceeded to steal from her husband's company (to get a reaction from him because their life was boring and she wanted chaos) and then falsely accused him of DV and ran away. She ran to her sister (you know, the one she refused to help) and begged for forgiveness and help since her now-ex-husband's colleagues were after the money she stole and would kill her. Anna said the only way she'll forgive/help her is if she kills "the man who tore apart their family" when they were young. Violet is shocked and we are left wondering what happened when they were younger and who this man is. End scene 😤

Enter: Violet who's now been living in this new town for 6 months establishing roots to get close to her target, the Mayor of the town. He also just so happens to be a completely abusive POS. She orchestrates multiple meet-cutes/damsel-in-distress moments (she got so lucky with him, honestly this woman is delusional and not nearly as smart as she thinks she is) and within days of meeting him, she's moved in to his house and married - again, she lucked tf out. Keep in mind, we're dropped into the story right before she meets the Mayor and only get the previous info through flashbacks when she falls unconscious (which is a lot because she is so accident prone and keeps getting knocked out🙄).

The "taboo/forbidden" aspect of falling for her "stepson" is so contrived because it's clearly understood between all parties that this is a marriage of convenience (the Mayor literally asks her, word for fucking word, "How do you feel about a marriage of convenience?") and she moves in and is married the next day. This is within probably 3-5 days of meeting the Mayor. They barely know each other so the "forbidden" aspect is not even consequential enough to interest me. And also, why establish 6 months of history in the town before making your move? Clearly he didn't look into you or your history so why did you wait so fucking long?

Anyways... our MMC, Miles, is an unknown-age senior in high school and actively hates his father (for good reason) and each new stepmom (because his mom died when he was a baby so he takes that out on each new woman🙄). In order to scare them off, he fucks with them until they leave. His favorite tactic is having sex with his childhood best friend with his door open (2 birds and all). He's literally having sex with her (the best friend) multiple times up until maybe 60 or 70% of the book. Then all of a sudden he's "falling for her" (Violet) when they've barely interacted and each interaction is either hostile or she's covering for him so she must be "so different" than his other stepmoms and that's apparently intriguing to him. There was absolutely no tension, no chemistry, NOTHING.

Then, add in the weird Governor of California bullshit and apparently the Mayor is a part of some cultish group who actively tortures, rapes, and kills women (I mean, are we really surprised at this point?). The Mayor takes Violet to a dinner at the Gov's house where the Governor wheels in a goon who's alive but has been scalped (he literally lifts the top of his head off like it's on a hinge in front of everyone and delivers some bad villain speech about falling in line as people throw up) as a threat to keep his minions under his control. Violet's disgusted but it bolsters her resolve to kill the Mayor. She attempts one night but is stopped by Miles and witnesses a torture/rape session. Of course Miles covers her eyes and uses his other hand to... distract her while the woman is being raped and murdered. And they say romance is dead 🥰 Violet realizes how woefully underprepared she is and they both come clean about their mutual feelings towards the Mayor and plan together how to fix everything.

Blah blah blah, enter some weird robot fighting competitions and Miles uses his bots to kill several of his fathers goons and almost kills his father. More fighting ensues and Violet is eventually the one to kill the Mayor. Her sister's goons show up to help take care of the body and Violet is at peace with what happened and asks if they think Anna will forgive her now. They reveal it was never about killing him but that Anna just wanted to see how far Violet would go to prove her remorse. That “you needed to let go and forgive yourself. And to discover and come to the understanding that the both of you were only the by-products of an evil man who changed both of you irrevocably.” (a direct quote). I'm sorry - Violet was a grown fucking woman in her mid-30s when she pulled all that shit. Let me be clear, you are in no way responsible for your childhood trauma. BUT you are responsible for taking control of your own healing as an adult and you cannot blame your shitty actions as a fully grown adult that actively hurts others on ignorance and your trauma. Grow the fuck up and go to therapy.

And if you're wondering what the Mayor ever did to Violet and Anna? Rest assured, I'll fill you in. Their mother went to him begging for assistance with housing. We're not told why she went to him and why he would've been in the position to help them back then (his job back then is not made clear but I seriously doubt he was the mayor yet). But this happens near the end of the book so I really think the author just threw an excuse in there and didn't care how incoherent it was. Anyways, the Mayor kills their mother for some fucking reason (because ofc he does) and separates Anna and Violet in the system. Violet got a good home and Anna didn't. So they spent several years apart and it apparently drove a wedge between them and that's why Anna wanted her to kill the Mayor. What the actual fuck is this plot ?

Anyways, I fucking hated this book. Some people seem to really enjoy it but I wish I could scrub it from my brain.

This is the 1st book I've read from this author. What really drew me to this book was the Blurb.

What I liked most: The concept of the story, it's originality. It's not your typical reverse age gap romance. Steam factor.

Why the lower rating? The plot holes in the story. I feel the lack of both backstory and motivating factors behind some of the key events of the story, particularly around the Heroine, affected the overall story flow.

I thought it was an 'ok' read. I will be checking out other books, by this Author.

Thank you to the Author, for providing me with this ARC.

First off OMG Ayden!!! I read this as an ARC, I absolutely loved it right from the prologue!! Miles and Violets chemistry is adorable!! Love hate relationship that keeps you wanting more!! I could not put this book down, stayed up late and I even skipped a bathroom break to just keep reading (🤣). The tension in this book had me saying " ok, come on just do it already!" Fantastic job Ayden!! I feel privileged to have been there while she wrote this book and loved having her watch all my reactions!! The shock factor, dang I gasped more than once and had wtf moments more than once!! Keep these babies coming Ayden!! Check your triggers. Age-Gap, step mommy, step son, 🩸, ☠ etc...
My favorite quote: " If you ever come back and f*cking look her again, it will be the last time your eyes look at anything, I promise you that."

I picked this book because I thought it was about flower arrangements. It isn't. Let me start by confessing that once I figured this out, I stopped reading. I haven't read this book, nor will I ever. Obviously the guy is one of those anti heroes women pant over just because he pulls her hair, smacks her butt and calls her a good girl. No reputable woman would read a book where the couple's spicy intimate parts are referred to 142 times and the F word is included 241. The author should be ashamed of herself and should definitely not write anymore books about flowers.

one word: rushed. this book was so messy, rushed, and all over the place that i’m shocked i didn’t get whiplash.

the beginning of the book was promising, the way things started and began to unfold seemed good and was going to make for a good book but it didn’t. i’m not sure where or when things began to downfall but i’d definitely say it was around the early chapters to the end of the book.

as i was reading, i had many complaints, but writing this review i sadly do not remember them all so i’ll say the ones i do remember.

1.) how the fuck did the two MC’s even fall for each other?? Miles hated Violet for the most part of the book with his own reasons and that’s fine….but then how did he fall for her? why? when especially?? it’s so random because the way it all played out happened as though a light-switch went off and he woke up one day and decided “yeah, i wanna fuck and love this woman” like..ok? it was just too sudden and out of nowhere for me to enjoy which is likely the biggest reason why this book was such a big flop for me. i felt no spark, no connection, no reassurance, and no love between the MC’s at any point of the book and that is a problem for me because i need to feel some sort of connection between my MC’s. oh and the spice? very minimal and barely detailed.

2.) the plot and the way the organization of everything in the book went down…yikes. i can’t even put into words what exactly the problem was for me in terms of plot and events but i guess i can say all of it. it felt like i hopped from one thing to another back and forth all throughout this book. plus with the whiplash the MC’s had made things even worse for me.

all in all, i hate to write this review because i love reverse age-gap books especially dark romance ones. i went into this book excited to see how things play out but coming out of it, i’m disappointed.

what i will say though is that i don’t know if the author said anything about Chris or Shawn (especially Shawn) getting their own books but i lowkey hope they do cause i’d definitely read them. Shawn seems like such an interesting character so i would def read his book and see who he gets with..as for now though, i don’t know anything about those 2 and whether or not they will get their own books

⚠️⚠️⚠️CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS AND TROPES! ⚠️⚠️⚠️
The way that Violet is torn between what she wants and what she should do resonated with me and hit me hard. She’s definitely my kind of stubborn girl 😏.

“Find a rich man. Never give away your heart. Pull it out of your chest, and stomp that traitorous bitch into the fucking dirt.”

MILES! the things I would let this man do to me 😏. I’m not usually one for age gaps, but I would gladly be with a younger man if he was like Miles.

“Most people don’t realize how unforgiving nature can be until they experience it.”

“Knocking on the door to the devils gate to play with my demons.”

Shawn 🥵. When I tell you I fell head over heels for this man and gave myself a concussion in the process 😏 and we literally only see him 3-4 times in the whole book. (If that doesn’t show how well the author can portray side characters idk what does).

10/10 Recommend this book for you to read if you love all things dark, and taboo.

OH MY GOD!!! AYDEN PERRY DOES IT AGAIN?!?!

This book had me hooked from the very beginning. Miles and Violet's story is full of twists and turns. The tension is real in this book and I am warning you now to make sure to check your triggers. The plot is well developed and when you think you know what is gonna happen Ayden throws another curve ball in there to make you question it.

had too many switch up during reading😭thought this was an bad looking book thats actually great but i changed my opinion fast😔sorry but WHAT WAS THE FUCKING PLOT???????

———-
Tbh I have to say with all the respect I own….only good thing were the sex scenes🥲🥲🙏forgive me but that was the only time with actual good dialogues??? (And the fact that I don’t even mean the ones between the main couple Bye)

I loved loved loved Miles friendship (he is the MC) with Christina and Shawn. Loved that Miles was casually bi even when this story is not an MM, it is always nice to see casual representation🫂🤞🏻
I loved that he wanted to get rid of his stepmoms not because of his biological mom but because he didn’t want those poor women to live with his Dad (very considerate)

Anyways the whole storyline with Viloets past was boring, the weird marriage after 2 seconds killed me😭😭and then she wanted to kill her husband out of loyality to her sister ??? I died and was confused as hell

Nahhhh cause worst part was the sex scene during a shooting Razzia😭😭😭 I was SOOO flabbergasted💀wrong place and time IT WAS SO RIDICULOUS 😭

I liked Shawn (Miles‘s best friend) till the point he posted sex stuff on the dark net? Why bro… just whyyyyy??

To sum up: whole book was a huge question mark for me, but I kinda hope for a book between Christina and her stepsister (they caught my attention)

🌶️🌶️🌶️ spice

I’ve finished Corrupting Violet, I’m sitting here and I can’t even form thoughts about this. 98% of the time I can guess how a book will play out. I can guess the plot twists and ending. This book? This book is in that two percent. Liiiiiiiikeeee what the hell?! The beginning of this book led me to believe one thing. Middle of the book there’s a twist I didn’t see coming. Then the end? Even bigger twist. I didn’t see anything coming. It was a pleasant surprise for once.

Overall I enjoyed this book. This was a new to me author which is always fun. My first reverse age gap which is honestly why I wanted to read it. The spice was good, it was just short lived.

As always check the trigger warnings. There’s a lot of them.

“She could be my weakness and possibly even my downfall.”

“Your whimpers sound pathetic, but I’ve never tasted anything sweeter than forbidden fruit.”

Ayden Perry has done it again.

I love watching this author grow and shine through her works.

For those of you who love the forbidden with a side of bloodshed, this book is for you.

Two broken souls who found a common goal.

The first half of the story starts out making you think one thing and the second half just leaves you reeling and at the edge of your seat. I'm coming to expect this from this author and I love every moment of the roller coaster ride she put me on.

Lusts and secrets. You'll never see the turns coming.

And the cherry on top? this story connects with the others.

This writing style was a very easy read. Watch out dark romance world, you're not ready for Ayden Perry until her name is whispered through everyone's lips in awe.

*5 stars that leave you coming back for more. I rank this book light dark on my darkness scale (especially knowing what this author is TRULY capable of.)*

Between a 4/4.5 for me

It was a good read and had a ok amount of spice to it. It is one to check the triggers warnings for though.

It's an interesting one as you are led to believe she is just a gold digger who wants the money however later on you learn that really isn't the case. And that there is a much darker matter at hands.
In enters stepson and well do I need to say anymore 😂. The only thing I wish for is that there was a little bit more growth and development between Violet and Miles before they started with the spice. I was hoping he would have tormented her a bit more before he realised his feelings.
There is an ok amount of spice maybe only really a 2.5 spice level. It is good for people who don't enjoy a lot of spice, I also found it to be rather near the end of the book too.

The ending was a bit of a twist as didn't really see that coming. However glad she got payback on Wade as he really deserved it let's be honest 😂.

The ride this book will take you on is a rollercoaster of emotions. The twists were so good and kept me guessing all the way through, just when I thought I knew what was happening, something else came along and shocked me.
I am obsessed with this book and with Miles too. He is filthy and I am here for it!!

He and Violet had so much tension and build up, I loved seeing how their relationship developed and understanding more about his character.
They had plenty of chemistry which lead to extremely hot spicy scenes.

Highly recommend! It’ll hook you from the beginning.

Can’t wait to read what comes next from Ayden.

I couldn’t get over the immaturity of Miles.
And Violet was a straight gold DIGGERRR! Instantly plotting her kill within 5 minutes of marriage. I found them both very annoying and there wasn’t a whole lot of anything going on up to this point. DNF @ 50% - sorry 😬
Given, the book may have gotten better but I was so bored and not connecting with the characters..

ᴄᴏʀʀᴜᴘᴛɪɴɢ ᴠɪᴏʟᴇᴛ ᴀʀᴄ ʀᴇᴠɪᴇᴡ

There is never a dull moment when reading an Ayden Perry book I’ll tell you that. A while back when Ayden sent me some snippets of violets book I was so excited to get her book and see how her story would unfold and in classic aydens writing way I was NOT FUCKING READY NOR PREPARED FOR WHAT SHE WAS GOING TO SERVE.

At first I thought okay cute forbidden romance reverse age gap okayyy but this quickly got dark af.this story was complex and dark with gritty elements that made my blood run cold there were secrets to uncover hidden by powerful people that you didn’t wanna mess with but let’s get into this plot.this was fast paced never skipping a beat Ayden was not asking if you were ready she was telling you.

At so many parts I thought I finally got it covered and I could relax but nope there was another turn and I was only getting dragged deeper down into Violet and miles story.

Let me just say though Violet and miles together were fucking FANTASTIC between the chemistry, angst, tension and forbidden aspect you didn’t know what way you we’re getting pulled in.they both tried so hard to play it safe in turn building up the imploding tension and when it finally snapped it was so freaking worth it the pay off was immaculate.

Ayden NEVER fails to amaze me with her writing I really didn’t think it could get better then her debut book then she dropped this and my expectations where turned upside down.how she managed to top her first duet I do not know.I quite literally adore everything in this book every character was unique and had there own story which just made reading this even more fun and exciting but let me tell you the spice was amazing and literally had my jaw on the floor but the mystery parts was truly something else.

A new favorite book from Ayden…I think so

Normally I go for stepdad/ex boyfriends dad romances...
but this was a stepmom romance and i'm not all that mad about it.

yes. im not a huge fan of reverse age gaps, but this was a decent read.
i did go into it thinking it would be darker than it was, but it was good, especially for it being my first Ayden Perry book!

I wish their was more details when it came to plot, it was also a slow start, but the smut was steamy.

3.5 stars, but rounded up to 4

I received my copy as an ARC for this Author and was my first read by her.
Violet is a straight up gold digger but somehow the author has made you sympathise with her because she beacons in on such a grade A d1ck.head.
His son Miles, you want to love him and he's a bit of a d0uche however he falls for his stepmom while trying to drive her out, which you presume is because he doesn't want a new momma but he's got more motive. Honestly it took me a while to realise there was more at play and towards the back end of the book you realise she picked Wade (Miles' dad) for actual reasons.
Some of its a bit out there like... how did we go from that to that?! But I was there for it 100%.
I wish there'd been more from Miles and Violet heat wise starting earlier on but equally they've tainted TV remotes for me. IYKYK.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and the plot was good but felt rushed like the book could have been so much longer and beefier; and it would have really benefitted the story. Be great for a afternoon read.
Lots of TW in there so if you're faint hearted maybe check those out first!

Violet meets Wyatt and they enter an agreement to be married so he has a beautiful wife on his arm. Miles is Wyatt’s son and wants to get rid of Violet. Violet and Miles are attracted to each other. Violet notices strange things going on with Wyatt and Miles notices strange thing going on with Violet. They all have secrets and nothing is as it seems. Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing Book. I absolutely love the dynamics between Violet and Miles. Great supporting characters. The twists and turns are excellent. This is my first book by this author definitely not my last. Do good I read it in a day.

Super sexy forbidden romance with stepmom and stepson. The plot isn’t what I was expecting and there were several moments that had me going… wtf is happening. But it was a quick read and I enjoyed it!

Please note there are several steamy scenes that do not include the heroine, if that’s something that will bother you!

Well this was an interesting ride.
I couldn’t put it down.
I thought I knew what was going on..but I didn’t….
😂
“Oh this is so predictable..”
“Oh..nope..not where I thought this was going..”

I only gave it a 4 star because there was some stuff that happens that could have been shortened or just not needed and it irked me personally. 😂
But I overall enjoyed reading this.

She’s only gone and done it again! I honestly thought I had some idea of what was going to happen in this book, turns out I had no clue. Because if there is one thing Ayden Perry does well it’s a plot twist that brings you to your knees.

I loved how nothing was revealed too quickly, little hints dropped here and there and when I tell you how excited I got to see my fave man from the butterfly effect duet make an appearance. I was sat picking pieces out and putting them together, living my best life as I connected the worlds.

The balance here couldn’t have been more perfect between character/world building, plot design and spice. It’s a slow burn and if anyone can edge you, it’s Ayden. But with great edging comes great explosions when our MCs finally get it on. Miles is a filthy man who finds the best match in Violet. It was such a good story line and it kept me hooked from page one.

I don’t even know what I just read

I will say I had to FORCE myself to finish this book. I found it on booktok and there was one scene depicting a sexy step mother/son romance and the entire 20% of this book was boring. Violet is trying to establish herself in town to get to the mayor and surprise after 3 days the get married. In walks Miles who is such a cliche - and not in a good way - all determined to run off his new step mom like the handful of previous ones.

Look. My two biggest issues here were the lack of details and the age.

I spent more time scratching my head trying to deduce the plot more often then I enjoyed reading it. We were only given half the information for literally everything. On top of that Violet is 35 and miles is an unknown senior in HIGH SCHOOL. I had to assume he’s 18 but it’s was not mentioned once!!! Im all for age gaps but this just felt ICK and beyond taboo.

Overall I will say I felt like the idea was there but this one could really use some extra attention as many details were dumped into the book with little to no explanation at all. Continue reading for more specific details.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:
The cult? I mean cool I love cults in books but this made no sense? Again. Half the details. So many characters and plot points needed to be fleshed out and they sadly just did not get the attention they needed. The California Governor did not benefit this story at all, he actually made things more confusing.

Violets past? Wow I blinked and it was semi explained.

Her sister? No idea what was even going on there. She came to Violet for help and was rejected but now Violet needs help and her sister is oozing unspoken Mob Queen vibes?! Then the ending made everything feel so pointless when it was announced that her task wasn’t really that serious and she didn’t care.

Miles was fooling around with his childhood best friend for a good position of the book and then all of a sudden (despite actively trying to push her out) his minor intrigue goes to a full out falling for her. It was sudden and choppy feeling.

This is the first book I’ve read by Ayden and it will certainly not be the last. I was slightly hesitant about reading as I haven’t read a lot of successful reverse age gap stories but this is how it should be done! Although I highly recommend reading please check triggers as there are alot.

We meet Miles who is driving away yet another stepmother from his father and the mayor, Wade. Safe to say it is made clear straight off the bat that Wade is a POS and Miles is very troubled. Violet, a gold digger, is working a menial job and desperate to enter into a relationship of convenience with Wade. While he is using her to promote himself politically she has her own agenda. Miles finds himself in an unusual situation, not wanting to fight off his newest stepmother and instead keep her for himself, saving her from the dark forces at work lurking in the background…

I think that’s as much as I can say plot wise without spoiling anything - trust me it’s best experienced going in blind and riding the wild rollercoaster.

I absolutely loved the development of both Miles and Violet’s characters. The typical feelings you would expect to have about each are turned on their head and I ended up just sympathising and rooting for their HEA. The spice was incredible and surprisingly I didn’t even notice the age gap because of how dominant Miles was which was a pleasant surprise. All in all I really enjoyed and can’t wait to read more about this universe.

Violet, in an faux accidental meeting with a prominent politician Wade, finds herself being asked to marry him -- as she planned -- to act as his fake wife for Wade's political aspirations. But Violet has other ulterior motives and she didn't expect Wade's son, Miles, to become a thorn in her plans or her attraction to him. Miles has been through a number of new gold-digging stepmothers who, through various inappropriate and often salacious acts, pranks, and other misdeeds, he inevitable makes leave. But is it because he detests them for their greedy ways or is there more to the story?

This book was creative, something entirely new from the traditional bully romances and enemies to lovers with the usual themes. First a (reverse) age-gap and second having two main characters who were not necessarily redeemable, particularly the heroine, Violet, as the book's title falsely leads you to believe. Even with the creatively of the plot, the clever intrigue, it was hard to feel root for and really invested in a story in which the heroine was not really a good person, at the very least whose motives were not explored in a way that made you feel empathy or like her.

And in fact Violet didn’t really redeem herself. We weren’t given sufficient detail of her life, her history to resolve her perception as a gold digger or interloper, or motives against her new husband as literally only a couple of sentences explained her time in the foster system and her betrayal of her sister.

Sure, the sexy times were great (3/5), and it was plus that the hero, Miles, was so very supportive of Violet, coupled with the fact that he, too, had a story. He was the bad boy with the unsavory father.
He was sexually free and confident. Prepare for an unconventionally story start up as we learn of his sexual adventures. Totally hot.

Miles and Violet's attraction, however, didn't feel authentic; it didn't come about organically. A matter of writing style, as in some ways part of the story were too fast -- motivations, backstories, the main couple's attraction, and the agreement and move in with Wades. Simultaneously, parts moved at a normal pace. The story seemed to be more an attempt at artistic impact that needed a little more to realize itself. It felt disjointed as a story, as if started in the middle, but interesting as a plot line, which I can't deny was inventive. But because of cohesiveness I found absence in some
cases, I found myself struggling to keep my attention.

First person point of view allowed me to delve in the characters' minds. Additionally, the side characters very much contributed to the story development and grittiness.

This book wasn't dark for me, but it did have dark themes such as violence, abuse, and dirty underbelly of a secret society. Overall, while I like the plot premise as well as the hero, there were some flaws in execution. I would read another book by this author, though, since I was charmed by the unusual, fresh, and twisted storyline as well as atypical characters.
