He's my instructor. He's off limits. And he's the twist I never saw coming.
On paper, Nash Jennings is intimidating as hell. Former Navy SEAL, notorious loner, and the grumpiest sniper on the West Oaks SWAT team. But I don't buy it. I think he's actually a nice guy under that armor he wears, and I'm determined to draw him out. Make him my friend. Perhaps even make him smile.
What could go wrong? More than I ever imagined.
I might seem like the girl next door, but I'm a cop, and I’m not afraid of anything. Except maybe that look of shock on Nash's face, right after I kiss him. Oops.
But it gets so much worse. Because one little mistake can lead to a chain reaction. Into greater danger than either of us could expect. Five minutes is enough to change our futures forever.
One kiss will put everything—even our lives—at risk.
An age-gap, single dad romance with swoon, action, suspense and steam!
I write suspenseful romance with pulse-pounding danger, fun & flirty banter, and tons of heart (plus spice!). Both a Californian and a Texan in my past, I now live in the Colorado mountains with my family.
Nash is a former SEAL and Madison is a trainee for SWAT. Nash is her training officer, but they connect in a bar and kiss. Grumpy Nash immediately realizes he shouldn’t kiss a student and she gets upset and leaves. Nash trails her to make sure she gets home okay, and they both end up breaking in on a home invasion in progress.
Nash has a teenage daughter that he could probably handle with a softer touch, and when he is wounded Madison moves into their lives to help.
There is romance, a slasher on the loose and everything comes together in a believable way. Well developed characters and plot made this a five star read. Sexual situations and mild language.
I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Madison is training to join SWAT and her team is one of the many Sergeant Jennings is in charge of. They both went to the academy together and Madison has always had feelings for the man. They call him Sergeant Scary. He’s always scowling and grunting. But then he asked Madison for her advice. Nash never hung out with his students for drinks but he was willing to try when Madison asked him to have drinks with her and the team. What he wasn’t planning is that kiss they shared that night. But then he screwed up and Madison took off. They realized that their night was about to get worse when he chased after her. A man called The Midnight Slasher has been a hot topic in West Oak and they might have caught him in action.
This is the second book of the series, but it can be read as a standalone. It has an age-gap romance between a mentor and his student. There’s forced proximity, romance, and suspense. Nash is a single dad to a teenage girl whom he always puts first, and Madison is trying to prove herself to her mother. Two strong characters are forced to face their feelings for each other in the hope of a better future.
I loved seeing the two fight their attraction, Nash trying the hardest. They were forced to live together after they both got injured, and they got closer while trying to solve the Midnight Slasher mystery. I loved how Madison brought out the rebel side of Nash. He seemed like a person stuck in a routine and she came in to shake things up. Her relationship with Emma, his daughter, made him like her more. Emma is a thoughtful daughter who wants to be present in her father’s life. She doesn’t let him push her away when he gets hurt. Nash is a grumpy guy who became even more grumpy when his sniper's hand got hurt. But he pushed through one-handed and saved lives more than once.
This book was enjoyable—the mystery and suspense of what and who were flawless. The puzzle pieces were tricky to put together. It keeps you guessing until everything starts to make sense. I loved it. The suspense and anticipation had me constantly trying to piece together the evidence and figure out the truth before it was revealed. It riveted me from start to finish.
There is nothing to hate about this book. I’m definitely picking up the next one in this series because I’m curious about the other characters and what their HEA will look like. Hannah Shield is one of my favourite romantic suspense authors and each book of hers I’ve read so far keeps proving it. Shield’s writing style is engaging, her characters are multi-dimensional, and her plots are exciting. Her books are well-crafted, believable, and undeniably romantic, making them perfect for fans of the romantic suspense genre.
I thought I guessed who the Midnight Slasher is but I was surprised that it wasn't that person at all. This book isn't predictable as I thought it would be and not a lot of books managed to do that for me.
I loved how Nash and Madison are perfect for each other. The sexual tension before they got together was okay but mostly I just want to go in the book and shout “just kiss already!”. It was worth it in the end though and the spicy scenes were so hot! I loved it.
Emma is also such a sweetheart. Her relationship with her dad, Nash, is endearing. Like she even wanted to help take care of him as best as she can and her reason was just heart-melting. I like how she's more than okay when Madison came along.
Another thing I loved is seeing the previous book couple — Holt also played a major role in this book but we see little of Janie. Also, how big their age gap weren't mentioned but acknowledged and that is a plus for me too.
Overall, I had fun reading this book. It has the right amount of romance and action and I can't wait to read the next book!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Another winner, I read this in one day. I am glad Madison got her story; she is strong, smart, and determined to be a great police officer. We have seen glimpses of her in previous books.
Nash is the SWAT trainer, now Madison’s trainer, as the team needs more members due to West Oaks latest threat. The two were at the Academy together years ago. Madison includes Nash in the night out after training, leading to a fun night and then a robbery in progress, where the mystery and suspense begins. Injuries have Madison and Nash away from the force officially, but their minds do not leave the case. As they follow the leads, will they develop into more than friends?
We also get to know Madison’s family and her relationship with them. Nash’s daughter Emma is well written with great dialog. I look forward to our next visit to West Oaks.
Thank you to Booksprout and the author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
The Five Minute Mistake has all the action, suspense, and chemistry you'd expect in a romantic suspense novel, but Hannah Shield's detailed plot, with twists I didn't see coming, set it apart. I love series reads and was excited to see Madison "Shelby" Shelborne as the female main character in book 2 of the West Oaks Heroes.
West Oaks is expanding their SWAT team after a series of attacks by the "Midnight Slasher" and Madison is participating in tactical training in the hopes of being accepted. Her instructor is Nash Jennings, former Navy SEAL, divorced single father, and Madison's former classmate at the academy. The slow burn in this grumpy/sunshine, instructor/student forbidden romance is made even hotter with forced proximity.
There is so much that I love about this book; the pressure of politics and the media on police investigations, the details uncovered in Nash and Madison's off duty investigation while Nash valiantly attempts to keep their relationship platonic, and when that final piece falls into place, I was taken aback, thinking I had it all figured out. Nash's transformation from the grumpy rule follower to opening his heart, not just to Madison, but to a deeper relationship with his teenage daughter, and friendships in general, just makes Nash even more attractive. Sean Holt, mmc from The Six Night Truce, book 1 of West Oaks Heroes, makes appearances as well.
Although part of a series, The Five Minute Mistake can be read as a standalone. I received an advance copy of this book from BookSirens and the author. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Just the wonderful story. It had me captivated from the beginning with suspense and the hot steamy scenes. I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it! Everything I like to read about .Such a great story I will read again. A keeper!!.

This was an okay read for me. I really liked the first book and sets the bar way too high for the succeeding books in this series. However, somehow Nash and Madison story's fell flat for me.
I didn't mind when the heroine pursue the hero in some books. More power to them going after what they want. But in here, Madison's efforts were rejected a lot of times. Nash has a lot of issues when it comes to starting a relationship with Madison, and honestly they were valid concerns. However, the push and pull up to the 47% of the book was frustrating. His refusal to her advancements was not because he wasn't interested in her, as a matter of fact he's craving her, his words actually. It didn't help as well when the hero acts on his attraction then afterwards regret everything they did, that was so immature and hurtful towards the heroine.
I didn't like the first half of the book mainly because of the hero, anyhow I'm pleased when he pulled his head out of his ass and finally give in to what he actually feels. They were sweet and swoony together when they don't worry too much about the reasons why they couldn't be together. It was also cool reading, how they investigate on their own, giving the Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibes sans marriage. Their steamy scenes together were also so so hoooot and was really good. Still, I'm wondering what's the actual age gap between them? Nash was 37 but it was implied that Madison was in her twenties.
I liked how Madison interacts with Emma and how she helped Nash navigate being a father. I know he's doing his best to show his love for Emma, though sometimes the efforts feels like a failure. I liked Emma as well, she was mature enough for someone of her age and not a spoiled brat. The way how she cared for her father is so admirable to read. They both have the best interests for each other but sometimes the way they show it doesn't really align with what they actually meant. And this kind of relationship is a very much honest display of family dynamics not just in fiction but in real life too.
The suspense is good as well. I tried my best to guess who's the "midnight slasher" but the villain didn't even had so much time during the story. Hints about him were only given I think around 90% of the book, so readers wouldn't see it coming. But it was still a good exposition of the perpetrator.
I just felt like there were so much clues they kept running after only to end up with more questions instead of answer, well I guess that's how investigation really works. While reading this, for me some scenes seems like were a bit dragging. Maybe because of too much description or just not really that much relevant to the story after you actually read them, but then again maybe it's a me thing and others will actually appreciate those details and information.
Overall this is still a good read, I just didn't like the first half of the book but the second half made up for it anyway. The writing style is something that I really liked and the plot development will make you anticipate so much of what's going to happen. Will still recommend this for those readers who want suspense romance.
This book sounded like it would be a fun read. I struggled with it from the start as it just pissed me off the more I read. The author did not do any sort of research. In this day and age when everyone has research materials at the tip of their fingers with the internet I can't and won't let an author get away with not caring enough about the story to make it feel more real.
First mistake of non-research: Military life....... There are only a few duty stations where the service member can't take their family, other wise the family moves with their service member. So, military families are pretty tight and support each other while their service member is away. Yes, some families fall apart, but his wife would have been living on post or in one of the communities around the base he was stationed at not in some other town, where when he got out he would have to move to. I know this for a fact because 1 I was born a military brat and 2 I spent 8 years in the Army and now have a son serving.
Second mistake of non-research: Swat Team Swat Teams are made up of the very best of a police station it's not a full time job they do their normal job day to day, wither they are a patrol officer or detective. Yes, with his military back ground he would have more than likely asked to join the team, but only after he had proven himself as a top tier officer. To be part of a swat team they have to go tougher a more tougher back ground check than to just be an police officer also they would have to meet a higher standard of physical and mental standards than the normal police officer.
I loved the idea of the age difference between Nash and Madison. My late husband was 16.5 years older than myself we meet while in the Army and spent 26.5 years together and that was way to short of a time.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was so excited for this to come out! We know Madison from the previous books, and I was so ready for her story. Madison is a police officer and Nash is SWAT. They went to the police academy together and years later he's Madison's teacher for some bad ass SWAT training. They had this connection that they seriously couldn't deny, and one night changed everything for them. No spoilers here but they have to work together to bring a criminal to justice. They get closer while working together, and they both realized that they couldn't live without each other. And the ending totally blew me away! This was a steamy romance that also kept me at the edge of my seat.
*I received an ARC from the author for my honest review*
This book tells us the story of Nash, former Navy Seal and police officer in charge for a SWAT training class, and his student Madison, and how a five minute mistake will change their life.
I love this book. Nash is a grumpy who's defenses will fall apart as he falls for Madison. Madison is strong and determined the way an heroine should be. At the begging I was waiting to see their attraction coming out of something that could happen in the book and I was a bit disappointed to understand that they were already attracted to eachother and because of that I was missing the chemistry between them. But this feeling changed a lot as the book evolved, specially on the second half of the book. The action was very good and I just guessed the final twist really near the end. I think the author did very well building the villain. This is a book that grows with the reading.
I got 48% through this book and I just wasn’t connecting with either the hero nor heroine. There wasn’t anything wrong with the book but if I’m this far into a book and there’s no connection and with the number of books yet to be read, I’m giving up on this one. I’ve enjoyed other books by this author so it’s only the book I’m quitting. And since I haven’t made it to 75%, I’m not grading it. I don’t want to penalize the author since I find the writing good.
The gasps I gusped with this one!!! I loved Nash & Madison–I loved that they had a history, because their relationship didn’t seem completely out of the blue, but I really enjoyed the hint of forbidden-ness with their jobs and the will they/ won’t they, f— it moments! I absolutely could not have predicted how this one was going to go, and I ate it up. I cannot wait to start the next book!!
I was not crazy about this book, mainly because I found it ridiculously improbable that anyone would think it was a good idea for two people who were recovering from being shot would shack up under the guise of taking care of each other. And Madison and Nash seem like the worst, least capable cops ever.

The Five Minute Mistake is the second book in a new West Oaks Heroes series by Hannah Shield. It can be read as a standalone in an interconnected series of standalones. Oh so dark, twisty, wonderfully mysterious, scorchingly hot and a wild ride from start to finish. This book is unforgettable, addictive and unputdownable.
At first glance Nash seems cold, distant, unapproachable, intimidating and a little judgmental; but when you continue to read and get to know him you see his different sides and layers. He can be sweet, loving, protective and supportive when the situation calls for it or when it’s about people he cares about, especially his daughter. He is a former Navy SEAL, turned SWAT instructor for the new class of trainees. Madison is courageous, brave and spirited, vulnerable, jaded; but in my opinion she is also reserved yet determined to uncover Nash's layers. She is a police officer trying out for SWAT. Madison and Nash are magical. Their love story is not easy: it’s messy, emotional, healing, insanely romantic, suspenseful and dangerous. Between them existed this unique connection, pull and chemistry, no matter how much they tried to deny it or the obstacles they needed to face. Neither of them has everything figured out but for the chance at love they wanted to be better persons and vulnerable with each other. They have ups and downs yet against all odds they made it.
A beautiful addition to the already amazing series which keeps getting better and better. I completely adored the unique storyline, real characters and a build-up. Don't miss this series.
Well this book was all kinds of cute, and I really loved it. Second in a series, it works beautifully as a standalone, though the protagonists from the first book--Holt mostly--do appear. I'd had the opportunity to read that novel as an ARC and let it pass only because I don't really love first person narrators (speaking in present tense, here, alternating between Nash and Madison) and also because I'm stupid, and I regret that decision now.
The teaser, which suggests the book is the instructor/student trope, is a bit misleading. Yes, Nash is the SWAT sargeant in charge of training Madison and her cohort, but not really too much time is spent on that angle, for which I'm grateful. Instead, the two are tossed smack in the middle of a home invasion case. At the same time, they're juggling a relationship with Nash's daughter Emma--a great character herself, Madison's chaotic family, and their own growing relationship.
Nash as a dad is possibly my favorite part. The grumpy, hard-as-nails former SEAL is completely flummoxed by his precocious teen, and some of those scenes had me laughing out loud. Throw Madison in the mix, and it's a family you just want to get to know better.
There were a few researchy things about teenagers that were mostly unimportant but still bugged me. As a 15 year old, Emma can't just be dropped off at departures for an international flight. Nash would be required to hire an airline escort, and he wouldn't be able to leave until the escort had Emma safely in his or her custody. Secondly, it would be illegal for Emma's friend Chad to drive his friends around. In California at least, underage drivers can only drive their siblings around. (Nitpicky, I know.)
Anyway, this book was super fun, both exciting and emotional. It--and pretty much any read by this author--is definitely worth the read.
I received an ARC of this book for free from the author and BookSirens. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
After reading the first book - and absoluty loving it - by this new to me author, I was happy to be given the opportunity again to read an ARC of the second one in this great series.
We meet two new characters, a whole new mystery and a lot of tension between both MC's. I was also pleased to see a cameo of Holt, one of the MC's in the first book. It was great catching up with him and seeing he was still doing great.
Nash is a former SEAL turned instructor for the SWAT team. He's a single dad to Emma (15), who he has custody of. He wasn't there much during her childhood and has wanted to change that ever since quitting the SEAL's. Their relationship is starting to get a lot better, with of course the typical teenage strubbles.
Madison is a police officer, following a training to become a SWAT team member. Nash is her boss, but they've known each other since being together while training to be a cop. They've had a secret torch for each other but Nash is keeping of the boat because he's her boss but mainly because he thinks he's too old for Madison. And of course there's Emma to consider.
When during a night out with the whole team, Nash and Madison stumble upon an ongoing home-invasion, their lives are turned upside down. Both of them getting hurt pretty badly and having to spend time close together to heal changes their 'relationship'. While holed up together, they start to look deeper into the home-invasion and find out it has a connection to another investigation going on. Being together 24/7 makes the tension between the two rise higher and higher until they finally give in.
I loved both the romance part as well as the mystery. It kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting to find out more. This series is getting better with each book and I can't wait to see what the author has in store for us in the next book.

I loved this book! The second book in the West Oaks Heroes series did not disappoint! I loved every bit of this book. From the first page, the plot and characters drew me in and I was addicted to it. It was everything and more. The plot was detailed and developed beautifully, with plot twists I didn’t expect. I was excited to read about Madison, who we’ve met in other books in this West Oaks world.
Madison is a police officer and Nash is a former Navy SEAL turn sniper for the West Oaks SWAT team. When the SWAT team decides to expand new members because of attacks by the “Midnight Slasher”, Madison takes part, and Nash is her trainer. Nash and Madison met years prior, when they both were at the police academy. This develops into a slow burn, forbidden romance where their grumpy/sunshine personalities were coupled with forced proximity.
There was tension between Nash and Madison, and though Nash tried his best to keep things platonic, especially since they were in such close proximity, his heart fell for Madison and vice versa. I really enjoyed Nash’s character development. He was a grumpy rule follower who wasn’t open to following one’s gut feeling. As his and Madison’s relationship developed, he became more open, which not only helped his relationship with Madison but also with his teenage daughter, Emma. I love their relationship, and some of their interactions throughout the book had me rolling. I loved Madison as well. She is a wonderful character and I love her relationship with her brother Jake and the developing relationship with Emma. I also really enjoyed the banter between her and Nash.
Hannah is great at writing books that have a good balance between the underlying plot and the romance, and this was no different. I’m loving this series so far and I can’t wait for the next book!.

This book was impossible to put down. It features everything I love in a good book. A growly, far too serious and intimidating hero, in this case Nash, who meets his match in the heroine, a determined, confident and kick-butt heroine, Madison (Shelby). It also features a fascinating and thrilling storyline that kept me reading into the early morning hours.
Both Madison and Nash are on the police force. He as a SWAT team member and instructor. She is a patrol officer trying to get on the SWAT team and a student of Nash’s. They have known each other since the academy, but he is years older and a former SEAL sniper. He is also a divorced father of a teenage daughter. A night out leads to stolen kisses and Nash backing away, with his position as her instructor on his mind. Their night goes down hill from there when they interrupt a home invasion that ends with both of them being shot and the perps dead. A long recovery is ahead for both of them, but even more trouble is headed their way. Her bossy and well meaning mother tries to takes charge and have both Madison and Nash as well as his daughter in her care will they are recovering. Madison rebels but she does end up staying with Nash and his daughter. Neither can forget what happened and both have a feeling that trouble is brewing. Unfortunately, they are right. Nash and Madison are also being hunted with retribution in mind. How will it all end? Will they be more than just investigating partners?
The secondary characters in this book only add to the enjoyment. Nash’s daughter is feisty, with a lot of teenage snark and emotion. Madison’s family is supportive but also meddling, especially her mother. Their colleagues like to tease, badger or advise them whether they want it or not. The whole story is fascinating and the characters have real depth which makes this book riveting.

Nash Jennings and Madison Shelbourne were so easy to cheer for in this book. Nash is a former Navy SEAL, now the SWAT instructor, and Madison is in his class since the police have a difficult case where the training could be very helpful. They knew each other previously. When they enjoy a night to relax after training, they end up interrupting an active burglary. Because the person Madison saw enter wearing a dark ski mask could be “The Midnight Slasher” they did not want to wait for backup, even though it should arrive in minutes. Hearing screams, they go in with their weapon and wearing body armor Nash had in his vehicle. The invader pulls out a knife on a young teenage girl he has tied up; the knife is the kind the Slasher uses. As he is about to slash her throat, she sees them and yells for help, alerting the killer. Their backup still hasn’t arrived. And as Madison takes the teen out the back door, Nash goes to find the 1-year-old brother. As he begins to climb the stairs, he knows someone else is in the house, a heavy presence, a danger – but where is he? And suddenly he is attacked. Madison calls his name and fires her gun at the second killer. He fires his gun again and again down below where she is standing in the entryway, an open target. And Nash kicks the man’s legs out from under him, making him fall down the stairs. Who are the bad guys? Did they stop The Midnight Slasher or was this someone else?
Both Nash and Madison are injured and bleeding badly. They are given time off to heal and Madison gets to meet Nash’s teenage daughter, Emma. The relationships that develop among them will put a smile on your face. Do these two belong together? Will they get a chance to find out? Or will evil snatch away the ones Nash loves the most?
Another story from the pen of Hannah Shields that is wonderfully put together. Not only the construction of a romantic story but also an intriguing crime story.
In this story, part of The West Oaks Heroes but can be read separately with characters from previous stories, we follow Madison and Nash.
Nash (a single overprotective father of Emma) and Madison, whom he teaches about the principles of the SWAT teams, are attracted to each other but can't show it in the current setting. Nash realizes her kissing on the dance floor isn't enough and so he breaks off their kissing. When Madison walks away angry and frustrated, she finds herself in a situation where she catches burglars. Nash follows her and together they enter the house. In addition to rescuing a girl, they are both shot at. Nash takes out both burglars and the police are convinced that they have eliminated the Midnight Slasher ..... nothing could be further from the truth!
Madison and Nash continue to investigate where the police left off and end up in dangerous situations where they are shot at again. But as exciting as that situation was, it is the catalyst to deepening their relationship.
I found this story very strong in its plot but also in the dialogues between the different characters. Emma is a strong teenager who on the one hand pushes her father away but on the other hand wants to take care of him, a real teenager but so disarming. Madison's family so honest in their love for Madison and as the stage for the 3rd installment of the West Oaks Heroes. This is how the writer keeps you bound to her stories. Perfect!
Highly recommended.

Whenever I read a new book by Hannah Shield, I love it even more. I identify a lot with this writer’s work. I loved the plot, the characters, the suspense, the love story, and the way the story goes. And as far as I’ve read, it has always been like this. A Hannah Shield book is always an excellent way to spend my time.
In this one, we have an age-gap, work-prohibited romance between two cops.
Nash was a Navy SEAL and now is the mean scary S.W.A.T sergeant and instructor.
Madison ‘Shelby’ is a West Oaks Police Officer working to become a S.W.A.T. member. A problem with this? Her teacher went to the police academy with her, and she finds him very attractive.
One night, while out together, they see a robbery in progress. As police officers, they have to investigate what’s going on and end up in a complicated situation. Injured, they decide to live together to help each other. But when two people who are attracted to each other live together they will get even closer…
I love the investigation part of this book as well as the romance part. The crime part gets you hooked - you want to understand what happened, who might be behind it, and what will happen. As for the romance, they are so cute and spicy together. They know they like each other but can’t be together because of S.W.A.T. The problem is: how to safely stay close while investigating, but not as close as they want.
One of my favorite parts of this story is the quick connection between Shelby’s mom and Emma, Nash’s daughter. Everyone gets so friendly, which is adorable, and the cute couple gets bothered and slightly scared by it.
4.75*

This was a book that kept me reading late into the night. It was fast paced, exciting, and steamy. It was romantic and funny while still keeping me on the edge of my seat. There were definitely some huge twists and they were revealed perfectly.
Nash and Madison’s chemistry was off the charts. They’d met four years ago at the academy, but their careers had taken them on different paths until Madison decided to try out for SWAT and Nash was her training officer. They share a forbidden kiss during a night out and the aftermath of Nash pushing her away takes an unexpected turn.
After getting injured trying to stop a home invasion, Madison moves in with Nash and his daughter Emma under the guise of taking care of each other. They’re still fighting their attraction, and decide to take up the investigation into the infamous Midnight Slasher when closing the case doesn’t feel right to them.
Nash and Madison’s investigation takes them on a twisty path to discovering the real Midnight Slasher. It’s in the middle of their second shooting that they both realize they can’t fight their feelings any longer. I love how their relationship blooms so easily and once they commit, Nash does everything to show Madison that he is all in. I love that Nash takes his daughter into consideration when starting his relationship with Madison, and I love that he quickly realizes he’s been wrong about keeping things from Emma. I loved both his and Madison’s relationship with Emma and they ended up making a perfect family.
This was a great read and I can’t wait to get more from this series. I loved the little Easter Egg thrown in about Jake and am looking forward to reading his book next!
Another wonderful and thrilling ride by Hannah Shield! The second book in the West Oaks series, The Five Minute Mistake grabs you from the beginning with sensual tension between Madison ‘Shelby’ Shelbourne and her SWAT instructor former navy SEAL Sargent Nash Jennings. That tension becomes more intense as the book goes on when they try and ‘do the right thing’. The entire West Oak Police force is looking for the “Midnight Slasher” and when Madison sees a home invasion taking place, she and Nash immediately act and save the day. They become injured during the rescue and end up convalescing together with Nash’s teenage daughter, Emma.
I love the intensity of the action, suspense, and pace of this story. The growing relationship between Nash and Madison is passionate and sweet at the same time. He’s my perfect type of hero, grumpy, protective, and soft when it comes to those he loves. Nash’s daughter Emma is smart, snarky, and caring, and I enjoyed their relationship so much. I found myself laughing out loud at several of their exchanges. Mostly, Nash needs to protect those he loves. He’s always done it by following the rules and not acting on gut instinct. Madison is quite the opposite. She a cop and has always used her gut to give her insight on what to do. Initially, they seem so different, but as they got to know each other, I could see they were more alike. They learned from each other and became a great couple. I loved the scenes with them and Emma together, it was so natural. I received an arc of this book from Booksprout, and this is my honest review.
Okay, So I do love this book but compared to the first one, I think this one lacked a little. Let me explain why... [SPOILERS]
So in the first book, we were introduced very early on to the suspect so when he was finally announced to be the mastermind behind everything, it felt like the story clicked.
With this one, we weren't introduced to the suspect until about 50% in and we had no clue how he was linked to the main characters until the end. This meant that no matter what theories you came up with, you'd never had guessed the ending leading to it feeling a little underwhelming. It was still good, don't get me wrong but the feeling of *aha!* lacked.
Okay, besides that part, I loved the connection between Madison and Nash. I found it a bit odd of Nash saying he liked Madison since the academy as he claimed he was married then but I'm going to ignore it.
I loved how there was spicy scenes but it didn't feel like it took over the book, they went into very little detail until the end - where you felt like it was worth it. The whole "running for your life and then fucking" was a bit odd to me but I'm going to ignore it too 😂. But what I love about them is that their love language is touch and intimacy - not sex btw - but just making out and being lost in their own world. I literally melted during those scenes.
I also loved Emma's character and how she's the complete opposite to her dad and how Emma's mum didn't cause drama. It was an honest friendly co-parenting which isn't spoken about much in books. Anyways, now I'm just rambling. Oh I would've loved more action too but with them constantly being injured, it made sense. KEEP IT UP!
Aaaah this book is my favourite from the series. Ok, there are only two books at the moment. Shelby or Maddison (you choose the name you want) is my favourite since we met her in "The Six Night Truce". She's my absolute favourite. She's badass and she knows what she wants. Her family isn't supportive for he carrer choice but she doesn't care. I like her for that because I wish to be like her for this matter. In the beginning, Shelby is training to join SWAT. There we met Nash who is a sergeant and a single dad. I think the author loves writing about single dads. I don't care because it's one of my favourite trope. Nash is an alpha male and he wants to protect everyone. The others people who trains to join SWAT are "scared" of him. They call him Sergeant Scary.
Nash and Maddison are two strong characters. I love the relationship between Nash and his daughter. And then Maddison and Emma.
What a love in this book is that the female character is in the law enforcement. It's so refreshing and it changes from others romantic suspens. I was so happy to see Sean Holt and Janie Simon from book one. I love the action in this book too.
I loved this book ! There were a lot of suspens and mysteries. It keeps me in edge for the entire book. Unless the first one, I didn't have any theory to find who was behind all this.
I will definitely read the next one. Hannah Shield is a brillant romantic suspens author.
Thank you Hannah Shield for writing this amazing book ! And thank you BookSirens for the arc !
Yessssss. I have been waiting for Shelby’s story for some time now. I absolutely loved her character whenever she popped in the previous stories. I’m so glad that she has her own. Honestly though, for a hot minute I had no idea who Madison was until Shelby was used. Haha. In Five Minute Mistake, Shelby comes across Nash, a “scary” and intimidating SWAT instructor that has everyone running the opposite direction. Nash is a single dad just living through life and dealing with a teenage daughter. Things take a turn when Shelby faces off with Nash. He doesn’t expect it and frankly, she doesn’t either. But as they get to know one another more, there’s something about Shelby that brings out the bright side of Nash and even his daughter can see it. He is hard and takes his job very serious, but by allowing Shelby to be part of his life, he is essentially allowing himself to live life. They actually don’t know each other very well other than from work, but as they are thrown together and force to solve a crime, it can’t be helped if they happen to like each other as well. Haha. They make such a wonderful couple. Five Minute Mistake is quite action packed and really showcases both of their abilities and set skills as well as putting theme in situations where they are out of their depths. There’s just so much to like about Shelby and Nash. This one definitely kept me on my toes and the suspense does a great job as a page-turner. If you have not read anything by Hannah Shield, do it now! Satisfaction guaranteed.
Page-turner, thriller, taboo, age-gap, witty and steamy romance with a perfect HEA Oh. My. Word. Only the second Hannah Shield book that I’ve read and now I’m hooked! This book started strong and it never let up. Spine tingling, scary, page turner. Loved it. I was so into my book that I literally jumped when my phone rang! Yeah…that good. As the SWAT team instructor Sgt Nash Jennings has a reputation. He’s grumpy and scary. Having been a Navy SEAL he’s all buff and smooth in operation but not comfortable as an instructor. He’s a man of a few words; just ask his ex-wife and 15yo daughter. Ever since the police academy Nash has noticed Madison Shelborne who was in his same cadet class. Madison is much younger than his 37 years but she was the only person who approached him hoping to make nice during their training. Now they meet again as she trains to make it to the SWAT team under his instruction. He asks for advice from her which leads to a quick kiss. A kiss that changes everything for these two. Love Emma his teenage daughter. Her character is written so well. If you like mysteries with thrilling events, lots of scary and steamy moments, you will want to read this book. I could not put it down. There is quite a bit of “tension” between Madison and Nash before they get down to business. There is so much more about this plot that I would like to share but you need to read it for yourself. So good! I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through BookSirens. Super cover too.
Brilliant romantic thriller! I loved the first book in this series so was looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint. Ms. Shield writes page turners! I couldn’t put this down, once I started, I was hooked! Nash and Madison are on the West Oaks police force, he’s SWAT, has found a home on that team after retiring from the Navy, and is now instructing wannabes; she’s a patrol officer, but they went through the academy together so already knew each other. He’s a loner, doesn’t communicate well, total opposite from Madison. After a training exercise she invites him for drinks with the team, cue the romance and the action! While the slow burn romance is delicious to read as it unfolds and I loved the grumpy / sunshine conflict between Nash and Madison, and the relationship struggles Nash has with his teenage daughter Emma; the real action is the “Midnight Slasher” case they are trying to solve. Nash and Madison stumble into a home invasion and the events of that night set up the intrigue and forced proximity awkwardness that follows. There’s drama, political maneuverings, suspects that aren’t who they seem and plenty of twists and turns to keeping you guessing. All tightly plotted, well written and well-paced, this one will keep you guessing until the end, I didn’t see it coming, but the conclusion is a brilliant plot twist! There is lots to like about this novel, it has great characters, an abundance of action, romance, and plenty of steamy scenes; very entertaining.
Aside from never really explaining just what the titular "five minute mistake" was, this book is absolutely perfect and was an amazing, romantic, suspenseful read. Nash and Madison start off by trying to avoid their attraction to each other because he's currently her instructor as she trains for SWAT, but one night out with the gang ends up with two wounded cops, two dead suspects, one traumatized young girl, and a case that seems closed but not quite as nicely as Madison and Nash would like.
There are still roadblocks on their way to both solving the mystery of the Midnight Slasher and the conundrum of their unavoidable attraction to each other. Despite all the complications - their jobs, his teenage daughter, a decade-plus age gap - they are drawn to each other like magnets and I truly enjoyed the slow build-up to each of them realizing the inevitability of their relationship.
The case itself is very complex, with a rollercoaster ride through all the evidence and surprises around just about every corner. Nothing is what they think it is until they finally figure out the truth, and I was amazed at how well the author put all the disparate puzzle pieces together.
This is the eighth book I've read by this author, and they just keep getting better and better. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves contemporary romantic suspense stories. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
