The author is a good writer for sure I love her work so this middle grade fantasy seemed perfect for my soon to be 10 year old who loves creepy stories. But she and I were reading together and both discovered the story felt like it lacked depth for the protagonist. She is a 12 year old girl with rich parents and presumably has had world history and would have access to the internet based on context clues in the story City of Ghosts. But she’s somehow amazed by things that 8 year olds in this era wouldn’t be shocked by such as an apartment is the same as a flat. Fish and chips means fish and fries or potato wedges. Pants means trousers. We found that stuff unbelievable. My daughter who is almost 10 says she knows all of that lingo and she’s learned a lot from reading and the internet. Another thing we noticed is there isn’t much going on with the concept of the veil. The protagonist plays peekaboo with some ghosts but that’s it. And the constant callbacks to Harry Potter. I don’t think my children are uncultured but they’re generation alpha . Harry Potter fans who are adults won’t like this but Harry Potter doesn’t have that timeless classic effect that they think. None of my gen a children or their friends reference HP the way millennials did. Is the 12 year old incapable of describing the facade of a building without saying “it looks like a building I saw in Harry Potter?” Doubtful.
But it’s not terribly written or too horrible to read. We just dnfd this best seller because it wasn’t for us.

Whew! That was long. I was originally going to read these one at a time and read another book in between each. But, then I got hooked into the storyline. Despite the length (over 900 pages), it does read pretty fast. If you like a good ghost story or like YA books, definitely check it out. I did find it hard to believe that the main character was about 11 or 12 years old and able to wander around all of these places.
I really loved the different ghost stories used in this book. They had scary, yet sad stories and interesting plots. The descriptions of places and buildings were a little lacking and I wish he had described these interesting places more. I know this is a Teen read and the main character is 12 but the descriptions of certain cultural aspects are extremely juvenile.
These books just kept getting better and better. The perfect series for the month of October. Hang tight while I plan a trip to visit all of the real locations in Edinburgh, Paris, and New Orleans. In typical VE Schwab fashion, she takes a paranormal ghost story and turns it into a compelling series of YA novels. Definitely recommend.
I ready all 3 of them in one book. I thought it was sweet and I love the paranormal. But I was expecting more of a resolution for Jacob. Or maybe more of a story on his side. I know he went through a lot and passed away, but couldn’t Cass go look for his family (whether they are deceased or not)? I know it’s middle grade book, but I felt like there could have been more.
oh my god this book was absolutely incredible it was so interesting and Cassidy always had u thinking she was about to die it was so good i only bought the city of ghost but after it I had to buy the whole series i usually dont write reviews but I just had to talk about how good it was I definitely recommend
Creative, surprising and grabbed and kept my interest
Well-developed plot and characters. Scenes were intriguing and surprising. Appropriate for tweens or elderly. Held my interest through 3 books non-stop.
These books are great for middle grade readers who love a good ghost story that's pretty spooky, but not traumatizing. And there's so much humor in between the scary stuff, so it stays pretty light.
This is such a great series! It's hard to explain, but I love how each book has its own atmosphere! Definitely a series that I can recommend to both adults AND children!
This was such an adorable adventure! I loved Cass and Jacob’s relationship and I loved the Haunted Mansion (Disney) vibes I got from the stories! Id I’m so happy the ending was happy! 😊
