Rate this book
Book 3 in the Award-Winning series is here. And it's worth the wait! Four set out, one is dead, another is barely holding it together. Still, in the face of tragedy, to save the modern world, Alexander Grant is more determined than ever to stop Elam Khai and Peter Kroll and anyone else who stands in his way. Having lived over 1500 years, our teenage hero knows a bit about history. But as much as he’s trained, as much as he’s seen and experienced, nothing has prepared him for what he’s about to face. In this third installment in the Battle for Forever series, LEAGUE OF AULD, the stakes are higher and the action more intense as Alexander, Phoebe, and Renika along with their band of misfits and never-have-beens confront some of the deadliest warriors the world has ever known. This edge of your seat adventure follows Alexander and his companions as they journey through a dangerous landscape where it seems everyone is after them. To stop the sinister plot designed to protect the future for a select few, they form new allies, face old foes, and uncover a shocking truth. Humor, action, and history collide in this pulse-pounding penultimate book in the BFF saga where Alexander will have to lose everything if he is to have any chance at all to win the Battle For Forever.

The third ( I mistakenly thought final) in this series did not disappoint. It's been a couple years since h read the first two so I did a repeat and then dove into this. WOW. I just love this genre. Historical science fiction? YES PLEASE!! I'm disappointed that Wil Wheaton didn't narrate this like he did the first two but it was still amazing. Constant action. It really could have ended but apparently there's a fourth and final book that will be coming out. And of course I'll be reading that too. Definitely recommend these books. They're not juvenile for a YA genre which is great bc I really don't do YA anymore. And it's not historical retelling. Just fiction twisted into the background of stories we all know but told as memories.

I honestly had a hard time getting through this audiobook. I know that not everyone will have this issue, but Wil Wheaton's narration of the first two books brought the story alive for me and apparently kept my interest.

There were sections of the book that really didn't need to be there. We spent a lot of time in the past that we didn't need to spend. There were aspects that could have just been quickly explained (like the blood born) without wasting so much time re-living it.
I was also bothered that Daniel turned out to not be dead. He was a really fun character, but his death was beneficial to the story. His return really took away from the emotional experience of what had been happening up to that point.

I'm not sure I'll be getting the final book of the series. I read the first 2 shortly after their release years ago...reread them prior to reading this one...but it felt like the time break between the first 2 being released and the 3rd being written and released altered the story in a negative way. This is all meant to have happened within like a week or so's time (batshit crazy right?) but the characters just feel like different people between books 2 and 3.

This is such a great series, and I am so excited for the 4th installment. Full of action, diverse and compelling characters, humor, history fun facts - seriously, I always learn a lot from these books (my favorite tidbit from this one was how turkeys got their name) I love when you can tell that an author does their research.
I will say that the romance could be more compelling, Phoebe gives me Mary Sue vibes and is just generally uncompelling as a character. Daniel, on the other hand, is great - a comic relief character who is actually quite intuitive, he's reluctantly brave, an amazing friend to Alexander and Phoebe when she lets him, and he takes his licks with little complaint. I love the relationship between him and Alexander who never treats him like an idiot and instead praises his talents as the strengths that they are.
I think Alexander is going on my list of favorite characters of all time. He's very well written with flaws that are realistic for a teenager (even one who is centuries old). Of course he's also very smart, not just as a benefit of his unnatural age but because he takes the time to learn and is curious, putting himself in positions to learn what he's interested about. Beyond that he's a compassionate character with the best sense of humor.

Hard to pay attention to. New audiobook narrator was not nearly as good as the last 2 books in this series. The 1st book was by far the best. The 2nd and 3rd could have been much shorter with much less details and stories from the past. Hoping that book 4 is better since book 3 just ended and I assume there will be another.

Can't wait for book 4?

This really entertaining and interesting series informs and educates on world history, pop culture and current events. Great characters that ate dynamic and engaging. Really can't wait for book 4.

The first part of the book feels like playing "Monsterhearts" :-)
The story is a nice ride. Unfortunately the lengthy and quite uninteresting historical asides brings the book down to 3 stars for me.

About people who are not immortal but live thousands of years. There is a conflict (battle) between those who want to take over the world and those who want to save it.
