Royal Heathens #1

Satan's Spawn

Rate this book
It's scary how much life can change in an instant.
One minute I'm preparing for a new school year in my San Diego town,
and the next I'm being ripped from my childhood home.
Making the cut from my father's death two years ago that much deeper.
Not only am I being forced to leave a place that reminds me so much of him,
but I'm being forced to move hundreds of miles across the country
to a city I've only learned about through Mom and social media.
Different climate. Different lifestyle. Different High School.

Riverside Prep is supposed to be the most prestigious school in New York City,
little did I know it's also the cruelest.
There's one faction of sovereignty reigning over the school of the elite:
and they call themselves The Royals.
These Royals aren't fancy nobles dripped in gold, though, no.
Or typical privileged adolescents.
These four guys are cold, ruthless, and take no prisoners.
Besides me, that is, because for some reason I catch the eye of their leader,
who's known well to be the worst of them.
Crayton Shaw is not a high schooler, or a royal, he's more like Satan playing God.
A psychopath with his sights set on me, and I have no idea why.
He claims to hate the new girl from California...
But his eyes are always on me from the shadows,
his lips tempting me with brutish words,
his seductive nature making me want to venture into the dark side and drown in it.
Crayton's allure is almost as deadly as his wrath,
and I spend most of my days trying to abstain from wanting both.
To remain the good girl my father loved.
But the more I'm around Crayton the more I crave his darkness.
His punishment. His twisted ways.
A quote I read somewhere said Hell was empty,
but that's because the devil's here with me.

Satan's Spawn is the first book in The Royal Heathens series of standalones.
It's a dark, elite High School enemies to lovers romance with bully and stalker undertones.
There are situations in this story which may be disturbing to some readers,
so please be sure to check the author notes in the book before diving in.

Meh… if ow stuff doesn’t bother you, then this will probably be for you…

Spoilers on some of the ⚠️

proceed with caution

here we have:

-a bully manwhore H
-a virgin h
-who loves to use sex toys (which doesn't bother me... but I know it bothers others)
-she's at a party, using the restroom in a bedroom, when the H comes in with OW and starts spanking and f'ing her very aggressively and graphically, butt stuff included
-the h sees this... and you'd think she'd maybe cringe or hide out right? NOPE... she decides to start masturbating while she watches the H with the OW 🙄
-the h runs out after the fact and the H chases after her
-did I mention that at this point both MCs want each other? It didn't stop the H from being with others... but anywayssss
-he then proceeds to finger f the h after catching up to her... right AFTER he's been with the OW... I don't even know if he washed his hands 🥴
-the H doesn’t know how to perform missionary, so he asks his friend to do it with the h so he can take notes 🫣

there's more stuff that happens after, but... my stomach was already hurting after all of this ^^^

DNF @ 30% - hero is an indiscriminate out of control bully who is desperate to let everyone know he’s a Satan worshiper or something eyerolly. He’s even got an enormous tatoo of an “evil goat” that stretches up his neck. 💕🙄🙄🙄💕- the h is a “virgin” whose main personality trait is watching porn and fucking herself with a large stash of sex toys. 🙄 She’s in high school. The hero is horrible to her, even going so far as to hurt her physically and she gets turned on by it. Of course she does. Now she’s obsessed with him. I stopped reading after the scene where she watches him brutally fuck his gf including spanking and bdsm style dirty talk. This is no mechanical “just to get off” screw. He’s proving his dominance over her and is pissed. So, I guess we can expect a wash rinse repeat with the h, since I guess this is what he does in the heat of passion. Fantastic. And what does our blushing virgin do? She f*cking masterbates. Of course she does. Mind you, at this point in the book, they are both “obsessed” with each other. 😐🙄 ANDANDAND… why did I close the book? Literally before he’s had a chance for his dick and whatever else to dry, he’s fingering the h. With the same hands he had on his gf not 5 seconds before. Awesome.

I’m good. 👌🏻

Self note
The h is a closet pervert who masturbates to the H fucking his GF/ow, even though MCs are obsessed with each other.

- H makes his friend fuck the h in front of him, because “manslut” H doesn’t know how to fuck in missionary.🙄
Maybe this is suppose to be a RH?

Not my jam.

Genre: Dark Contemporary Fiction
⭐️ 2.5/5
🌶 3.5/5
🧠 3/10
Cliffhanger: 2/10 (Because I know that's not the end, right?)
Noteworthy: Book 1 of a series of interconnected standalones. Major content warnings. Dual first-person POV. Available on KU.

Sigh..I don't even know where to begin here. It's so rare for me to not DNF a book that isn't resonating with me but I was intrigued enough by where the story would end up that I had to finish it. I want to start off by saying that I would not personally classify this as a romance even though it's open door. The ending will not leave you feeling satisfied for all that this book makes you trudge through.

I said it in one of my updates but the overall feel of this book is like a more messed up high school Fifty Shades. The MMC is full of trauma and is enabled by everyone in his life allowing his hurt and anger to punish and treat people any way he sees fit. A part of me did feel for him because there isn't enough therapy and medication in the world to heal some people. But damn. Crayton made it incredibly difficult to root for him most of the time. The FMC started the story lost in grief and the responsibilities she felt to placate her mother after the untimely death of her father. An impromptu move across the country has Bex starting a new life in a new school. This book started off in typical bully romance fashion with the MMC making the FMCs life a living hell for reasons she can't help. But it takes a turn to the dark side as Bex slips more and more into Crayton's darkness of her own free will. She goes from a potential future at Stanford to teetering on the edge of criminal intent.

So why only 2.5 stars? A few reasons. Having this set in a high school was really uncomfortable. It just seemed to take a step beyond the typical dark high school romances. Also, the spicy scenes were cringe at times. I understand they represent Bex slipping into her darkness but they were not all well written scenes. And the other woman drama is like a LOT lot. This book is also very long for no good reason. There aren't enough events happening in this story to warrant this many pages. And finally, that ending? Not me flipping back and forth looking for another epilogue. Where is my HEA? Yeah, not a romance and this is one of many reasons why. I'm going to pretend a resolution comes in a later book that I probably won't be reading. If they were 350 pages I might give it a shot but 800 pages? Insanity!

If you like high toxicity, high drama, lots of wtf moments and are okay with a myriad of triggers this may be a series you will love.

DNF 😡

Ugh. Someone told me this was like untouchable by Sam Mariano and I have never been more disappointed and irritated by the time I'll never get back. Let me tell you about this dumpster fire of a book:

Funnily enough the H was more tolerable than the stupid, stupid heroine. I'm supposed to believe this moron is so smart she's going to Stanford? 🤣 Pls. He's absolutely horrible to her, physically hurts her, has his army of followers humiliate and embarrass the shit out of her and what's this stupid heroines response?? Get wet and needy for him with zero apology or effort from him. 😂 Literally she's so stupid I can't help but laugh..

And I love dark romances so what he did could have been forgiveable if this spineless tool of a heroine actually stood up for herself or wasn't just this pathetic weak idiot he can pull closer and push away and she just waits around for crumbs. Gross.

Clayton isn't far behind with his stupidity. He's "Satan's spawn" and all evil but this girl is different. How? I don't know. She's his doormat just like every other girl in the school so literally nothing differentiates her except his word that she's "different"

Oh she's also secretly kinky and goes from virgin to public $ex in a few chapters.

And to make this shit load somehow worse, the Hero doesn't know how to perform missionary/normal $ex so he asked his best friend to teach him by joining them and performing acts on the heroine while he watches. But we're supposed to believe this guy is sooooo possessive and this good girl is sooooo innocent but they do stupid shit like this.

Everything just pissed me off and I had to stop.
Dumb and dumber deserve eachother.

Wow! I read that all day and all night not even showering! That was perfection. This started out so strong and had me hooked immediately! I loved how psychotic and mean Cray was and I love an unapologetic villain whose really funny. I found his friends, especially Saint to be hilarious! Rebecca was such a good FMC & I loved her chemistry & back and forth with Cray. Dark academia is my absolute favorite & this was one of my favorites. It was dark and gritty and twisty and these characters had hilarious banter. The spice was unreal and had my jaw dropped. There was so much creativity in a trope that’s been done before and this was an unforgettable story. I loved that Cray stayed true to himself the whole time while also trying hard to open up to Rebecca. His story was so tragic & sad but their love story was so sweet! I will literally never forget this it’s a 10/10 read I cannot say enough good things.

Lololol uhhhh......I'm really wondering about the five star ratings on this book....I dnfed (did not finish) after about two or three chapters when it kept going on and on about his mother and how she abused him of his "sins". Call me crazy but I don't really want to read about child abuse. I already read Sybil a la of the multiple personalities due to her schizophrenic mother thank you very much. Don't want to read another. I can see on the literary horizon that this dude is going to have mommy issues amirite?

Whoever reccd this in the Facebook book group (I forget which one), I want a time refund on the time I spent on this book. It's awful. Like cat hair vomit left for months bad.

Satan’s Spawn is an elite high school, bully, stalker, enemies to lovers romance. There’s definitely “touch her and 💀 ” vibes, and a fair amount of grumpy/sunshine.

Crayton is the bad boy we all hate to love (and love to hate?), meanwhile Bex is the sweet, innocent, new girl in town. Can Bex soften Crayton’s heart? Will Crayton darken Bex’s innocence?

Jenna Styx (aka Danda K) always delivers with a compelling story that keeps me turning those pages far too late into the night. And the spicy scenes are always 🔥. But this was a true enemies to lovers and they don’t start hooking up right away. The tension was delicious!

I also loved the side characters/BFFs, and the hints at possible future storylines and couples. I already can’t wait for the next book in the series!

I received Satan’s Spawn as an ARC - this is my honest review.

This book…. Man I wanted to love it but everything fell flat for me.
First off why was is it 700 pages?! Let’s stop with these ridiculously long books that don’t need to be. Why does this take place in highschool?!?! Can we not?!
The spice…man I thought it would be sooooo muchbetter it was pretty vanilla and boring. Also we don’t get a scene until almost 500 pages in THAT IS RIDICULOUS! And on top of it nothing original or interesting and the first time they have sex what in the fuck was that?! Gave me the ick. Like why was saint there?? And then that gun scene later it was like she realized all of this was way too vanilla and just added that randomly there? It was just weird..
Like I thought we’d get the scene Rebecca stumbled in on…nope not once did we get anything like that.
This was not a HEA I feel lied too. That ending was absolute bullshit. HES IN PRISON THAT IS NOT A HEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crays trauma was super sad but like I don’t feel like he talked about it enough or is really healed? Idk it felt undone for how long this book is.
I did enjoy Bex she was a sweet girl I really didn’t understand why she liked cray so much tho like I need more from the romance aspect. They finally get together and there is all these time jumps? Why?
Why was he so attracted to her? Idk if felt like she stole the plot of fifty shades (about Christian being attacked to his mother) but that had better character development then this did. And come on those books are poorly written at best.
Honestly I’m very curious about saint so maybe I’ll read the next one? Idk tho. Guess I’ll wait to see the reviews first.
Honestly I’m just super disappointed in this one. The potential was there but it should have been college. It should have been shorter. The romance should have been better. The spice should have been better. The trauma should have been better written. Just blah
What a waste of a day

So no I do not recommend.
If the saint one is good I’d say jus skip this one lol

AHHH!!
I’m such a sucker for bully / dark romance
And this one - well shiiiit - it hit the nail on the head

Don’t let the books title sway you away - no JUMP into this one and experience everything that is Cray and Bex 😈

Loved this story. Loved the twists. Loved just the … depravity in some spots….it left me wanting more and more !!!
I can’t wait to see what else lies ahead in the future of the royals 🖤

Danda got me out of a reading slump first with Ties that Bind and You broke me first and this one … this one has secured the spot of AUTO BUY ALL HER STUFF FOREVER list and the “these books need to be on my shelves now!”

DNF at 50%. I really tried with this one but the writing is terrible. I understand trying to keep up with high school dialogue, but it was just corny. Overall, both characters seemed immature and the level of cockiness in this man was weird. Acting like he owned everyone in the school, unrealistic scenarios. Just a bunch of things. I liked the idea of the book but I just could not get past the dialogue omg.

And just to top things off, the h and H claim to be obsessed with eachother yet the H keeps going to fuck his side piece even at 50 % IN THE BOOK WHATT. And one of the times the h sat there and watched it and got off on it… in a closet.. with no one knowing she was watching…😂

I initially enjoyed this book, I thought it had a good story line and it had some comedic relief but IMO I felt after the FMC and MMC got together it started to become like a Wattpad story. Completely fell off. The sex scenes were cringe. Wtf was up with the blood tasting in the Pit!? And the weapon usage on the car - no safety!? Come on. The writing became so tacky. Along with Rebecca’s newfound attitude/behavior, I started to loose interest. I’m all for character changes and developments but hers was a little cringy.
The last 20% of the book I found myself skimming to get to the end. Kinda disappointed in it. But looking forward to Saints book, hopefully it doesn’t turn out the same way.

Warning! Has an Unhappy non-ending, should not be considered a standalone. This book would have been 4 stars if it didn't end with the villian winning and the bad guys getting screwed over. 689 pages to finish this off and you end it with the H in prison for a crime he was framed for?! What beta readers failed you? No "standalone" should end that way, with everything completely up in the air. So frustrated I wasted so much time reading this.

Absolutely Loved!

This book is the literal definition of a dark b u l l y romance book and I am 100% here for it.

This book captivated me from the first page all the way to the last and I didn’t want it to end at all. I became wrapped up in the story of Crayton and Bex and the fine line they treaded throughout the entire book. I really enjoyed the various themes that Jenna used in the book and how every moment further enhanced what was a gripping plot to me.

I absolutely loved reading Bex’s fascination with Crayton and the lengths he went to in trying to get her to leave. And when they finally became a couple, I was shook. I don’t know how many times I said “omg” but I honestly can’t find a single flaw in this book. This book was intense in all the best ways.

I found the h to be a doormat, frustrating and the bit where she was in the closet watching the H and the ow was very embarrassing and I cringed at the bit when she enjoyed what the H was doing to her with his knife when she should have been shouting and running away for help.
The H I didn't like because he told everyone that no one could touch the h except for him and then he was with the ow and the cause for bullying the h was very unneeded and the ending was very unsatisfying especially as the ow got away with what she did.

This audiobook is narrated by Cecily Foster and Michael Norman Johnson. This is Bex and Clayton's story. It's a dark academia story with bullying. The characters attend a high school called Riverside Prep. There is an elite crowd called the Royals, and their leader can't decide if he hates Bex or wants her for himself. I loved the drama and conflicting emotions the main characters faced. It was a great storyline that kept my attention. These narrators did a fantastic job portraying these characters. I definitely recommend listening to this audiobook.

This book was everything I’ve been looking for! I could not put it down🥵🥵 this is a slow burn but it is soooo worth it!! My jaw was on the floor so many times! These people were 😜
Crayton is a fantastic antihero🖤 and Rebecca had such a bleeding heart I just wanted to hug them both! I’m a huge fan of bully romance and this was top tier 👌🏻
the side characters are also great! Normally dont care much for side characters until their book comes around but I’m excited for the next books to come out! Especially Craytons very helpful 😉 😉 best friend, Saint🥵 . This friend group was fun and I really enjoyed their energy.

WOW! This was my first book by this author and she’s 100% left her mark for me. Without doubt one of my top 5 reads this year!!!! I stayed up and did and all nighter because I just couldn’t put it down. I’m a quick reader but I savoured every word and every chapter till the end and now I’m left wanting/needing more.
The plot, the storyline, the characters was perfectly laid out and written so well which made it so much more easily readable.
Both bex and Crayton are very complex characters. Bex(h) has adhd and has recently lost her dad and then had to move and the join an elite school.
Crayton has such bad childhood trauma that even when he’s grumpy or bullying bex or with the biatch alexis you still just want to hug him and love him. I absolutely loved how much Crayton respected and loved his dad and laughed hard when he lost his car!!!
When Crayton and bex finally came together it was perfection
As always in a book you want them side characters and the royals well let’s just say I can’t wait for there books
Honest to god alexis why wasn’t she🔫🔪💀

Lastly I do have questions I felt the ending just was left open????
Please stop reading if you don’t want spoilers

With the ending I felt it wasn’t done I would have loved an epilogue a few years later of Crayton getting out of prison I just felt it wasn’t a proper HEA. I wanted him to get out and them move in together or go off to uni Etc.
Also I’m left here wanting to punch my kindle because what was the promise he ask from saint?
Will alexis get what’s coming to her? That c@n£ need to be unalived I mean felix got what’s coming to him but I felt like Alexis got away with it all and that can’t happen surely?
Anyway I leave this here and hope to god the next book is release asap

I liked this book.. 🥰 it was a bit more lame and calm then I thought it would be. Someone in a Facebook group recommended this as a really really dark romance with strong bully/possessive/very very very mean H… and I guess I’m numb as f#ck from all my reading coz this was a bit soft for me.. 🙃🙃

I can actually see how someone with Cs childhood goes a bit crazy and feels unworthy of love. I would have enjoyed to have a bit more of Cs crazy and follow on his killing sprees.. 🤪

And I was thrilled to read a story where the heroine was actually strong and pulled through. I liked her a lot and she really grows on me trough the book. 🐯

I wish there was a second book tho, it would make sense to have a cliffhanger in the lunchroom when C was arrested. And then the last part didn’t have to feel rushed. I would have loved to follow their journey all the way for C to get out of prison and for B to follow her dreams with him by her side.

However I’m overlooking the need for a second book with this couple and hope I get to see them again in the other books of the series. And giving this a 4 ⭐️ and I’m a three ⭐️ kinda gall so congrats 🥲
